Lifting and weight loss
Hi everyone I know that people talk about not worrying about the numbers on the scale, etc - it's all about how your body composition changes once you start lifting heavy. However, it seems that a lot of the people who have had great results from lifting, without it showing on the scale, had already reached their goal, or…

Can you explain the breakfast thing?
So my husband is quite interested in my journey and the discoveries that I make in the process. I've read often on the boards that it doesn't matter what time of day you eat, whether you eat breakfast or not, and that the "6 small meals a day to keep your metabolism going" thing is hokum. I totally agree with all of that,…

Gah - on the hunt for some sort of boost...
I'm struggling at the moment to return to pre-wedding and pre-honeymoon eating and exercise habits. My husband and I spent a month in France having a blast on our honeymoon, and I fully intended to get back into things when I got home. But all I seem to be able to find are excuses. It's the middle of winter here, the…

Wedding photos!
I'm back on MFP after the whirlwind of the wedding and the honeymoon (a month in France!). Took a substantial break from the site over the busy time, but now am raring to get back into the swing of things. If anyone wants to see pics, I put them in a blog post:…

I've lost a cat....
...figuratively, that is! I jumped on the scale this morning and on a whim as my cat was walking past, I picked him up. That took the scales back to my starting weight. Ha! I know it's not much of a loss yet, but it's been 5 kgs (11 pounds) in 5 weeks, thanks to MFP! I'm happy to have lost a cat.

Awkward wedding issue
Dear Internet, please help! I'm getting married in 2 months and we're paying for it ourselves. We made the call to only invite partners in two cases: 1. Where we hang out with the partner, too, and both partners are part of the general social group together, and 2. Where the main 'invitee' wouldn't really have anyone else…

Is MFP like the gym?
On New Years Day there's a massive influx of people and then it peters away again within a few weeks? I started here in November last year, but I didn't spend enough time on the boards back then to really notice!

Calorie burning for lifters?
This may be a dumb and obvious question, but I'm going to ask it anyway... Has anyone else who lifts heavy found that they started burning more calories just generally? I use a Bodybugg and I've been lifting heavy for a month - my daily burns seem to have increased from what they were for the same amount of exercise a…

sore shoulders with squats - any ideas?
Hey guys I started Stronglifts last week and it's going really well - with one minor issue. You do squats every session and I've been lifting 30kgs of plates for that (plus the bar is about 20kgs I think). The problem is not my legs, which are sore, but handling it. The back of my neck/upper shoulders was REALLY painful…

That word doesn't mean what you think it means.
Okay, my tumblr is down and my FB friends are tired of my rants, I think. So sorry, MFP folks - it's all yours! I've put together a delightful mash-up of all the errors I found - just today... in ONE book... for your reading displeasure. (I'm an editor and I'm working on a book for a self-publishing company.) It's pretty…

Dear My Fitness Pals, you are awesome...
I've worked for 12 hours so far today and my eyes feel like pissholes in the snow. I'm feeling a tad fragile and possibly hyper-emotional, but I just want to say to my MFP friends, new and old... you're the best. When I think about how you help me keep on track with my goals and stay (moderately) sane in the midst of a…

Holy wow...
I don't usually share videos on here (and I'm probably way behind and everyone's already seen it), but this is AMAZING! It saddens me that no matter how hard I work out, I'll never have these kind of superhuman skills... :frown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP3-mHAARWA

Heavy lifting for women
Hi all Just looking for a wee shortcut. I totally believe in lifting heavy for women - after a few months of doing Body Pump classes and getting reasonably good results, I'm ready to add in some serious lifting. I've read loads of info about it and seen heaps of success stories, and I'm definitely a believer. So I've…

Mini win!
Okay, so I've been getting really frustrated with a lengthy plateau - I started on MFP in November 2011 and I've lost 11.2kgs (nearly 25lbs), but the vast majority of that came off in the first four months. Over the past few weeks, I have tried to really step it up, in order to keep myself motivated and feeling like it's…

Macro fiddling or sustainable lifestyle?
Hi all So there seem to be two loose camps here on MFP - First there's the camp who have lost weight via the "eating less and moving more", keeping it simple and just slowly and steadily letting the lifestyle change take effect. Then there are the people who put a lot of stock in different macros, what you eat…

Working out Net Calories
Hiya! I know this may sound a little daft, but I can't work out which of the numbers to subtract from the other numbers to get my NET calorie intake for the day. I think I've been doing it wrong - the three numbers are Totals, Daily Calorie Goal, Remaining and exercise cals below. Which ones do I use?!

Anyone else have this crushing realisation?
So you've lost some weight, you get dressed up to go out for a dress-up party. You think you look pretty okay! Certainly better than you would have before you started on here. You have a grand old time, feeling the confidence that is back again for the first time in a long time. Then... Someone starts posting their photos…

SICK!
Has anyone got any sage advice about how to get rid of a cold super-fast? I REALLY want to go for a run but my respiratory system isn't playing ball. Started with a chesty cough and now I have a blocked nose as well. I've been doing so well with exercise and I'm loath to fall behind now and lose the progress I have made in…

Bodybugg help?
Hi - this is for Bodybugg or Fitbit users! I just activated a Bodybugg and I was wondering how you combine those programs with MFP? Do you calculate your BMR? The way I was thinking of doing it was calculating BMR, and then putting the difference between that and whatever the Bodybugg says you've burned as your calorie…

Galvanised... like a NAIL! (Or like a BOSS)
Been away from the site for a while - a couple of weeks of madness followed by two weeks of holiday in Hawaii without internet access or phone. But now I'm back! I've only gained 1.5kgs in that time (a lot less than I feared) and I have a new goal... MY OWN WEDDING! My boyfriend proposed while we were away (and of course I…

Do plateaus end by themselves?
Hi everyone I know there is a lot of different advice out there about changing up routines, spike days, eating at different times, exercise cals, etc etc. What I'd like to know is whether I can wait out a plateau? If I'm eating at the right level (ie at a reasonable deficit but not too huge a deficit from my daily intake…

Avoided the scale for 3 weeks
..because I was getting fixated and obsessed about it, so needed to break the habit. The pay-off came today when I weighed in and I'd lost 3kgs! (6.6lbs). YUSSS!!!! :drinker:

Weekly cals vs daily
Hi everyone! Just wanting some input from people on the matter of adhering to weekly totals, as opposed to daily. As I've settled into the MFP routine, I've found that I invariably have a couple of normal days a week, in terms of hunger. But I also have a couple of madly hungry days and a couple of days where I'm…

I need you...
My Fitness Pals! I need help and possibly a kick up the bum. I haven't totally back-slid yet but I can feel it happening. I haven't dropped much weight recently, got increasing stress levels (death in the family and rental house being sold from underneath us so we have to find somewhere to move to), plus mega busy with…

Socialising tips please!
Hi all I have been super-good at portion control and improving my general food and exercise habits for the past three months. But I have a weakness... Pre-dinner nibbles - chips and dip, cheese and crackers, olives, antipasto platters, anything that is sort of "choose your own adventure" instead of "put an amount on your…

SV - first goal IN THE BAG!
My first Scale Victory (as opposed to the NSV!) has been checked off! I started in MFP in early Nov 2011 and I aimed to lose 8kg (about 17.5 lb) by my birthday. Well, Saturday weigh-in was today and my birthday is tomorrow. I win! I'm so confident that this is going to all just fall into place, thanks to this amazing tool,…

Burned calories and fitness levels
So this makes sense to me but I want to see if it's right. I use an HRM and as my fitness levels are increasing, I'm burning fewer calories now than when I was less fit. With most of my exercise, I ramp it up each time, but my walk to and from work is unchanged. My HRM shows a lower number each week for that exercise. Does…
