The 5K on Saturday was bizarre. It was SO dark! I came in 2nd in my age group but my time was the worst I've ever run -31 -- mainly because it was so dark. Also, my app said it was 3.3 so not sure if my app is off or they were. My daughter is home from college and she ran it and got 3rd in her age group - she doesn't run a lot but after running the turkey trot with me and now this one, she now is looking for others for us to run. About 5 minutes before the race started they said "this is not the race to run your personal best .. it is very dark ... there are many wild animals and if you see one you need to stop!" We were panicking that the road was going to be uneven we would fall, etc. There were luminaries (bags with glow sticks in them) along the route but that did nothing to really see the road. It was fun once it was over and we were safe, but not sure I'd do it again. https://www.facebook.com/SommerSports/timeline is the company that did it and there is a little video on that page that shows how dark it was. Crazy!

Great job on placing both of you!

My daughter and I ran one of this night time races a few weeks most of the path was gravel and it was dark. Not sure I'd want to run it again, I was never sure what my foot was going to land on. I had a small flashlight and it was a run through a Christmas light display but it was still dark.

Been resting for a couple of weeks nursing a pulled muscle from a race earlier in the month.

    12/22 - 2.87

Total: 9.07 miles out of 50

Will never make my 50 miles but I need to take care of my leg.
Glad you are resting and taking care of yourself - that is the best thing to do and not risk making it worse!

A few things. If it is a certified course, chances are they are right and you are not for a couple of reasons.

#1, phone apps depends on the phone's gps which is not the most accurate measurement.
#2, you may have ran a little extra without realizing it. (especially if there are a lot of turns and curves).

Certified courses are measured by straight lines of the shortest path legally possible. Unless you are "running the tangents", you are most likely running a little extra.

This link gives you a more detailed explanation of what running the tangents mean:

Thanks - that makes sense! I usually do try to always get on the inside curve on a turn at a 5K but I never thought about it in such detail as that tangent site explained. On that particular run in the dark, there was no way to get yourself at the best position because you had to worry about running into people or animals.

    ^^^^ This is so awesome!
I was hoping to hit 1000 for the year but I will miss it by less than 50 I think by the end of the month. What an accomplishment for you to hit 1700+! WOW!

    12/9/14 4.3 miles

    12/16/2014 5.0 miles
    12/21/2014 9.0 miles

Might just reach my goal after all - two weeks into December I had some doubts about that, but the extra "vacation day long run" today helped.
