Happy Halloween, all!
My favorite form of exercise is rowing - on the water, in those long skinny boats like the ones in the Olympics (mine goes slower ). I also enjoy spin classes twice a week, occasional biking on my big ol' hybrid bike, and the rare walk.
We're winding down rowing season (it gets cold here - the river freezes), so I'll have to face facts and start mixing in some other things. Rowing machine is one, for sure; probably resume weight training like I did last winter; and I really should get in the pool . . . 60 pounds lighter, I'm not even certain I still can float (and I just hate to swim, but I need to do it to keep my meager skills up).
Most of us in this thread are old enough to remember, if from the US, and I hope be amused by this t-shirt, which was part of my "Ghost of Bad Elections Past" Halloween costume this year. (No particular political position is intended to be advocated or denigrated by this costume - it's just for silliness, since most of us are pretty tired of this election season no matter which side we're on.)

Yeah, Anne, that's so funny how things seen before are seen so differently now. Irony.
I'm doing more walking these days, now that I'm at maintenance and feeling a lot better for it.0 -
Ugh...why did the switch in my head flip and it has gotten so hard not to overeat. Still struggling daily, but haven't given up even with more bad days than good days of eating.0

My exercise of choice is running. We are getting to the time of year when running becomes a bit of a challenge. like Ann's frozen river, snow and slop are a little tough to run in/on/through. I do exercise with jessicasmithtv on youtube. I'm thinking of trying step aerobics. I also have a rowing machine and elliptical. Variety is the spice of life and all that jazz.

2012retiree: I am feeling the same way! Could be the cooler weather and shorter days! But I renew my vow each morning to have a stellar day! I'm thinking of pulling the trigger and joining a gym. I love swimming so that is a bonus. I should get the OK from my PT soon to start strength training. I have weights at home but find I am more accountable and motivated in a group setting.
Also, I did well when I was reading a book about some kind of physical adventure. Walking the Camino is on my bucket list. Good luck to all today. Have a successful calorie deficit.1 -
Ann: Rowing! I'd love to try rowing! I belong to a dragon boat group and we paddle twice a week from May to early October. I absolutely love it. There is no better place to be on a summer evening than on the lake paddling. And such an awesome workout. And even if the weather is bad, it's still better than being inside at the gym lol But yeh, we just pulled the dock in for the winter and pretty soon there will be ice on the lake
Our municipal rec centre has a sale every fall and you can buy a six month pass for the price of five months. I do that every winter and use it for the gym and for deep water running classes. I think i'd like to try swimming lengths this winter too. I used to do that in my early 20's but havent since. I think at our age we need to do some exercise for our bone mass though. I also snow shoe and cross country ski in the winter which I hope helps in that area. And I have a golden retriever that loves her walks.
Mk2fit: This summer I started running for the first time in 25 years!!! I ran my first 5 km race on October 2. Maybe try for a 10k next year???
Elated: one of my dragon boat team mates did a section of the Camino this summer. She said it was an awesome experience and wants to go back and do another section.
I guess where i'm going with this comment is that we need to mix up our fitness routine and do different things. Not always the same thing all the time. Firstly, its good to challenge our muscles in new ways. And secondly, it prevents injuries from using the same muscles and joints all the time. Just something to keep in mind

What is everyones current favorite form of exercise? I am still walking and slowly adding strength training.
I do lots of walking, my Fitbit is one of the best weight loss/health building tools I own. I also do a circuit weight lifting program for strength training one a week. I do dumbbell work while watching movies, and I hike in the Rockies every chance I get. Oh and I am adding in this from the MFP blog:

I'm also a big fan of Jessica Smith TV and have added her MFP Fall Back Fitness Programme to my playlist. I'll probably do it next week. I also love Fitness Blender and will be starting an 8 week programme in December with them.

Ridiculous59:: What is a dragon boat team? I kayak on our lake here in Michigan , but to second your comment, sadly the dock and boats are out of the water. Although, we had a 75 degree day today. On Nov 1st!! Woohoo
Also, I noted that you spelled Elated correctly. My screen name is actually an amalgam of the grandchildrens names. I thought it was fitting as losing weight elicits much Elation!!!!1 -

Eleted: a dragon boat has 22 paddlers, a drummer at the front, and a steers person at the back. The stroke is quite powerful and is a full body workout. The group I paddle with is mostly women our age. We paddle twice a week and usually go to a couple of regattas each summer. Last summer we also competed at the provincial seniors games (over 55). We didn't win a single race but had a lot of fun When I saw how in shape the other teams were it inspired me to come home and work harder. Just because i'm getting older doesn't mean I can't be strong! Google dragon boats on line and you'll get an idea of what it's like. Maybe there's even a group in your area and you could try it?? We let people paddle the first time for free here2

Griffinca2:: You are in Georgia, if I recall? Yes, by this time of year, those temps are not appreciated. You do most of your working out in a gym? Is your weather mild enough to be outside most of the year. ( comfortably) I am getting out of MI to spend winter in CA for the first time ever! It is northern CA , but should be mild enough and sunnier to keep walking and hiking outside. CA has such good trails and scenery. I hope to come back in good shape by spring. Plus I hear their farmers mkt goes year round so healthy vegetables will be a bonus.1

I'm 65 and have lost 72 pounds since April, 2013. I did it mostly through diet alone, since I had a broken leg and a complication that I am still struggling with--a broken titanium rod--so believe me it can be done!! I stay around 1400 calories a day but go higher if I'm traveling. Even then I always aim to stay at maintenance or below. Key for me is consistent logging, substituting good food for bad, and learning portion control. I eat enough calories so my body won't revolt, and don't restrict any foods except fast food and soda.
Not high tech but it really works!
High tech doesn't work for all of us....good for those that it does....Perseverance is the key- I tell myself_so I agree with you. It's working for you . Keep it up1

Eleted, Do as much outside as I can; it's been 90 + here since March (and over 11" behind in rain), so too hot to exercise outside. Since it has started to cool down go for walks in the morning before it gets too warm. I live about 90 miles south of Atlanta (and a lower elevation) so it is warmer here on average. I do belong to a locally-owned gym ($20 a month for over 60). They have machines (weights & cardio), free weights and exercise, classes so do my weights and a short (15 - 20 min) cardio session 3 X a week.1

Checking in..... I am in maintenance now. 5'6" 155--160. Age 62. I lost 41 pounds or so in about 8 months time. I was still trying to lose weight when I was at the high end of my weight range. So really I have been maintaining 4 months.
I know I would of been very frustrated if I wanted to lose below 155 pounds. My weight range is 155--160, I am able to eat out at least 1x week, have my snacks and enjoy my new life style change without being miserable.
The only exercise I do is walking. I have been slacking on the walking lately.....so, this is my voice saying "Get walking tomorrow!"1 -
Try adding some weight training (if you are able) to what you are already doing; it will help re-build some (but not all) of the muscle you have lost. We lose muscle as we age, so keeping (and adding) as much muscle as you can will help you lose and once you're at goal, maintain your weight.3

Hello Everyone! It is that wonderful time of year that is so often affiliated with food...sweet, savory...you name it...food. I am within about ten pounds of my original goal weight. I don't want to feel like I spent the entire holiday season feeling deprived of the things that bring out all those childhood memories. My one simple goal for the next couple months is to simply keep to the status quo on my weight without adding pounds back. Yes, I will still be trying to eat within my calorie goal everyday, because I refuse to throw the whole plan out. So far throughout my weight loss journey I have tried to find a happy balance on calories throughout each day. My recent diet has been awful because we've been working on a major house remodel
for our son and his family. We have eaten wayyyy too many sandwiches, pizzas and pasta that was easy to fix or take out and not nearly enough veggies! I MISS veggies!
What's your plan for taking on the holiday food season? How are you going to stick with it? Keep up the good work ladies! Remember! YOU ARE WORTH THE EFFORT!!!

Mine is to not really deny myself; just to eat larger portions of protein (i.e. turkey, ham, etc.) and smaller portions of the other stuff. That way won't feel deprived and end up pigging out on it. It's that time of year and it will be harder to say no to fattening food and treats. Feel it's better to eat a little and be satisfied rather then feel deprived because "it's not on my diet."5

My aim is to not put on weight (try) I agree with Griffina - I would land up eating as much as I can as fast as I can. Oh my word - what we do to ourselves2

My goal is to live life and not stress over what I can't eat. On the other hand, i've worked too darn hard to just have a food-free-for-all for an entire month. My holiday plan is that if something is amazing, I'll eat it. If it does not have "WOW" factor, it's not going in my mouth. In other words, I won't mindlessly stick my hand in the chip bowl. I will, however, fully enjoy cheese Raclette on Christmas Eve. I will savour the hot chocolate and bailey's as we cut down the Christmas tree, but I won't eat the baking as we decorate it.
Thats the plan anyways lol4 -
I have scheduled an 8 week fitness program (Fitness Blender) to start at the beginning of December. And as we are spending Christmas at home I should be in a better position to control things. That's the plan, anyway - added to sensible eating choices!

Love to read about the success of the older members I'm 69 and yes it's a lot harder when you are older, you have to just keep at it and not let it slip back. Good luck to you all. If you give mutual support feel free to add me.1

This will be my 3rd holiday season here on MFP. As in the other years, I will eat what I love, just smaller portions. There are so many ways to "skinnify" our favorite foods so we can enjoy a little bit more of them. Add in an extra walk if you need to. Channel Nancy Reagan and "just say no" lol. Easier said than done, but you can do it! Try a small bite of that candy, cookie, pie instead of the full thing.
If anyone would like help to skinnify a recipe, just let me know.
Oh, yeah, I have lost over 70# and am keeping it off.5 -
I started in 2015, so this is my second year. I started because wanted to drop abt sever or eight lbs; ended up losing abt 11 or so (and I'm 66). I have also been able to gain back some (not all) lost muscle; even after breaking my wrist last Dec (was out of commission for four months). Agree w/mk2fit, eat what you love only smaller portions and eat larger portions of protein--it will help you feel fuller.1

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving here in the US of A and as I logged my breakfast this morning, I was thinking of the things I was thankful for in my life. I just wanted to let this group know that I am grateful I found MFP and this wonderful group of women who show so much support for anyone seeking help on their weight-loss journey. The support here has been phenomenal and it is appreciated! Since January, when I started logging daily, I have lost nearly 75 pounds and am within five pounds of my original goal. Thank you ladies, for your support and comradery! Thank you for helping me see that I could lose weight and maintain it and that I was worth the effort every day! Kind words are never wasted! Thank you!10

I am 60, and have had a few changes in my life recently (job change, income change, etc.) I have lost 61 pounds (17 before joining MFP). I'm a hearty eater with a fairly active lifestyle, and have successfully lost weight before but never kept it off. I have to realize that this an entire lifestyle change, not something with an end goal that I can reach, relax, and then revert to old habits. Diabetes runs in my family and I want to keep it at bay. I am losing VERY slowly, but surely! I am now in Onderland for the first time in over 22 years, and over the holidays I was able to buy clothes in a normal women's section. Overwhelming! I slip here and there, but it is not devastating as I just get back on track the next day. I feel wonderful, energetic, and better than I have in years. I vigorously exercise at least 5 times a week, and have embraced the over-used phrase of "use it or lose it". Only slacker part of my day is sitting in front of this computer reading the forums!

Hi I'm Linda, I'm 69 years young, I was on another diet program. I had gone from 230 - 188 lbs. Then I got up to
198/6. So I came back to MFP! I had been on this program about 3 or 4 years ago! I lost 3.2 lbs. as of today from

I am 59 years old, and I totally agree with most of the above posts...I lost forty pounds a couple of years ago and gained it all back!!!(ugh!) Since, about, the beginning of the year, I have lost ten pounds...Even since when I first started on MFP, it seems to be getting even HARDER to lose the weight...I am, also, on several different medications, which, I know, one for sure one side effect is weight gain...There are a lot of different challenges going on...Also, I am post-menopausal, and I put on a TON of weight going through menopause...But, I REFUSE to give up!!! A couple of years ago my doctor told me that I was at risk for a heart attack if I didn't drop some weight...So--That was what, originally, got my butt into gear...It DEFINATLY is MUCH harder to lose weight the older you get, but, basically, your health as you get older, depends on being a reasonable weight...Good luck to everyone and DON'T GIVE UP!!!
