Well, I wouldn't know where to start with Ice Princess...practically everything was wrong. Let's start with some basics. It is not physically possible to go from beginner to triples in a few months. It is also not physically possible to use some computer physics equation and magically fix problems on the first go, and use it to acquire skills you don't have. Like ever. The elite skaters work with a computer program called Dartfish, but it still takes them time.
Also, my level of THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS is off the charts. They do a silly little showcase number, and suddenly she's at the Junior level? UM NO. That's not how testing works, that's not how the levels work, that is just not how skating works. There are no spotlights in competition and at the time the movie was made lyrics were not allowed in competition. And the thing with the boots was ridiculous. Blind Freddie would have put those boots on and gone "Jeez, this feels like wearing concrete blocks on my feet, I think competing might be tricky in these!".
I could probably do a breakdown of basically everything wrong with that movie minute-by-minute, oy vey.0 -

We watched the movie Foxcatcher last week (slow, moody, good - Steve Carrel and Channing Tatum both excellent) and it made me wonder how true it is to the sport of wrestling. It's based on a true story. At one point he loses a bout/round/match (?) and has a giant binge in his hotel room. He's like 10 pounds above his weight class! (Oh no!) He manages to vomit about 2lbs then goes on the exercise bike for 90 mins and sweats off he rest to make the weigh in. I looked it up and apparently that part is true!
(This isn't a spoiler, by the way!)0 -

It depends on the movie. I loved "Rush", and I'm a huge motorsport nut - but Ron Howard really made the effort to make sure the movie was reasonably accurate, and the things that were not accurate were so minor and so few in number that I could easily accept a little artistic licence. Whereas "Ice Princess" doesn't even try for accuracy but presents itself as this serious skating movie and it drives me bananas.0 -

Also, I grew up in South Carolina and I have never had a banana and mayo sandwich. Not only that, but it sounds disgusting to me! I already don't like mayonnaise that much, but maybe I'd like the sandwich. Who knows? I think it was Italian_Buju who mentioned eating tomato and peanut butter sandwiches. All kinds of combinations you'd never think to try out there.
Oh banana sandwiches are heavenly! I need one in my life here soon I do believe! Try it, it's better when there's not a lot of mayo, and it must be dukes mayo!
I agree. They are good. Better than PB & banana. It has to be the grand a perfectly ripened banana, good mayo spread at the perfect thickness and soft, moist bread.
Ugh another who just can't wrap their head around mayo and bananas! I like bananas, they're not my favorite thing in the world but I LOVE mayonnaise- on LOTS.
I am sorry, but bananas and mayonnaise sound disgusting together. I'm not a huge fan of bananas anyway, but don't you DARE sully my precious mayonnaise with one. I almost always ask for extra mayo on sandwiches and burgers.
I think mayo is gross! Sorry...
AND you don't like carrot cake. What kind of monster are you?!
Now now no judgment. I love the cream cheese frosting on carrot cake so I am not totally worthless.0 -

I really appreciate you guys listening to me vent and talk, I don't get that opportunity much. I haven't even mentioned anything that I've found out to the family yet, because I know what comes next, and I don't think I can handle their condescending remarks and snide comments right now.
That stinks that your family isn't more supportive, you could really use that. You can always talk here!!
It's okay. I'm kinda used to it, we're sort of the outcasts of the family, so it's not like we're going to get much love anyway. It's usually that we're overreacting, she's just a bad kid, or it's our fault because we don't "expose" her enough, and (my favorite) we don't discipline (aka spank) her enough and that's why she's the way she is. Everyone wants to ignore the multiple doctors that have said explicitly that something is wrong, and blame us for her problems. I've dealt with a lot of bs from his family over the years, and nothing short of us ending our marriage (which is NOT happening!) is going to ever make it better. So, I just try to ignore it and move on.
True story: I no longer see or speak to my in-laws. Worthless pieces of failure to understand....yes, I thought better of typing something else.
My MIL, when discussing why my husband's ex was actively doing several things to turn her kids against their father, said, "I'm sure she has a reason". I've wanted nothing to do with the woman ever since then.
Yes, she has a reason. She is a hose beast.
Reminded me of this:

One of them I like ok (and I think for sure is going to win), the other two I never really liked... and the person I wanted to win got voted out in fourth place. ARGH. Hate it when that happens.
On another note, I keep hearing some weird sound coming from my kitchen and I'm not sure what it could be. I told my boyfriend our apartment must be haunted or something. It almost sounds like some water is splashing on the floor violently, but I can't find anything wrong. We recently had an ant infestation so maybe a big ant is making noise in our wall as revenge for our ant murder.
Creepy. I hope you can figure out what it is. If you do, let us know.
Back in about 2009 or 2010, we had a few months were my whole family was experiencing weird things (in different locations) that I've never been able to explain to this day. It was really weird... I felt like we were all haunted for a while too.
Had a whole post on this but it got eaten, so here's myCliffNotes:
*cue creepy music and/or men in white coats to take me away, whichever you prefer*
I like science so I rationalize/explain away a lot of things but in every home I've been in, since I was 10-12 (age when Puberty hit me hard), weird things happen. They happen so regularly that I now just shrug and deal with it.
Briefly:
-Grandpa died in a nursing home for Alzheimer's patients. He was healthy as a horse just not in his right mind, Had a dream the night before he died that he was in a storm and scared but then white light took him up away from the storm. Next morning my mom called me and told me he got locked out of the home and was stuck in the yard all night and was coughing/sick (it rained). He died a week later.
-Saw things in just about every home I've been in.
-I had a miscarriage (I've had a few, actually, but I just never talk about them) and it was a pretty bad one, pain-wise. Was in bed watching TV and heard a giant bang (like shake the walls kind of bang) in the kitchen, went in the kitchen, nothing amiss except my keys were lying in the middle of the floor. Weird, they were in my purse, but k, gravity makes things fall. Put them back in, nothing happened. Took a really hot shower later in the day to help with the pain, nothing weird when I got in, when I came out in the mirror there was "Bb" in the steam (like that, capital B, lowercase b). Pretty faint though.
-We get footsteps running up and down our stairs. At night I'll be sitting in the living room armchair and hear little quick steps like my 3.5 yr old running going up/down the stairs right in front of me, so I'd see if it was DS. I still always check on him anyway. He's always asleep. I'm always the last one up, bc I don't sleep much.
-I get tappings on windows that follow me as I move around the house (I go in the living room, hear it in the kitchen. Go in the kitchen to check, hear it in the living room window right by the chair I always sit in). We have a floodlight right outside in both places and I never see anything. We had that in our old apartment, our previous house, and then the house we just moved to in April. k, fine, our house is from 1972 so older, but our last house was from 2012.
That's just some of it; it doesn't bother me anymore but it'll spook DH. Usually happens to me but he occasionally gets it too so he's stopped making fun of me about it.
I swear I'm not nuts, either (although crazy people never think they're crazy, so...) I always shrug it off, but after a while, you start to think there's something there.
and I have had it happen where I thought I saw something shadowy outside, turned out to be a squirrel running, etc. so I know the difference.
This gave me the heebie jeebies. I have goosebumps on my face. That's some freaking stuff, right there.
I read the whole cliff's notes wondering when the crazy part was coming. These things have happened to me my whole life. They don't happen in this house, but they happen other places. Either we're both crazy or neither of us is.
I'm a scientist with many years of schooling and training and I can't explain a number of things that have happened to me. I would love to explain them but so far I can't. So I offer no explanation for this. Here's one of many examples. When I was in my early 20's I had broken up with a cheating & lying boyfriend. It had been awhile since the breakup. He wanted to talk. Fine. To talk we went for a drive in my little gray pickup truck. I was driving and I turned off of PCH near Malibu onto Mulholand Drive. It was just about dusk. I had not driven that part of Mulholand Drive before but I knew it went all the way through to more populated areas. I had not driven far when we approached a huge tree overhanging the road. The tree (and I don't know why I knew it was the tree, but I knew- the voice was inside my head and out loud at the same time, and our windows were up but it was not muffled) said to me "Stop, turn around." I heard it. Ex bf heard it and we looked at each other and at the tree (although within five minutes he denied it without prompting.) I drove just a little further and again "Stop. Turn around." Who am I to argue with a tree? I made a U-turn and went back to PCH and we finished our drive. A few days later I read in the newspaper about a body being found just beyond where I had driven. The description of the woman, age, height, hair color, etc, and the description of the vehicle fit me and my vehicle.
Sorry this will end up at the top of the thread again but this gave me shivers.0 -

If you look between the whipped cream and the filling, you'll see a nice layer of chocolate ganache.
Things I learned in my taste trial:
- Too much whipped cream. I thought this might be the case, since the layer of whipped cream is as thick as the pie filling. I'll be decreasing it by approximately 1/3rd next time.
- The whipped cream wasn't sweet enough and had way too much vanilla. I knew about the vanilla, because I lost my grip on the bottle and it flooded the whipped cream, but I'll need to increase the powdered sugar a little bit.
- Otherwise? Mmmmm. My husband didn't like it very much, because he said peanut butter in pie is weird and he isn't used to the idea or the taste. I hope his family likes it, though!
I want this sooo badly. I am up in the middle of the night again because I woke up starving. I ate a peanut butter clif bar (my new favorite) and logged those 250 calories to yesterday since I had room....but I would rather have eaten this!0 -

Sunday was a lazy day, netflix and gaming for me.
This Thursday we are heading camping up north (zero signal!) for 5 days, I don't want to work because I'm excited haha. I already have my list sorted out (we're shopping today), I've got healthy foods listed as well as some junk. Sounds like you had a fun weekend.
Of course when you go camping you at least have to make some S'mores.
Oh my YES! S,mores!!!
I am still kicking myself for not buying some Peeps when they went on half off. A poster in the Gelato group said they make an excellent S'More since the sugar caramelizes.
When I was younger we would make Mountain Pies & put pizza sauce, cheese, & other pizza toppings on them. *drools*. I've heard people even make desserts with the campfire makers.
For those of you who have been around a while remember all the peeps stories from @tincanonastring ? I am pretty sure peeps s'mores was one of his too.0 -
I was feeling inspired by @pofoster21 so I went looking for a run to do. I'm nowhere near ready to do a half-anything but I found a 5K in the fall that allows dogs. Yay! There are even walks and runs for people with dogs. And ones where you can dress up as fun things. They aren't all 'serious' runs! Go for it!0 -

Why are the thin and well built members of MFP so mean? I guess they've never been where we are.
Welcome to the thread! We've been trying to keep this a judgement-free zone
There are a lot of very fit people with a ton of knowledge and experience on this site, and a lot of them have lost a ton of weight themselves (and/or built some serious muscle.) Keep in mind that a lot of them have been here a long time and tend to be a little more...direct...with the kind of questions they see all the time. They are also generally big fans of "tough love", meaning they're definitely not going to accept excuses and they won't sugarcoat stuff to be nice. I'm not saying it's always the best way, but please don't give up or have your feelings hurt because they really are trying to help, and sometimes it's hard to accurately read tone on the Internet anyway. Know what I mean? And remember that a lot of them HAVE been where you are and so taking their advice, no matter how it's phrased, might be a good idea.
I will also say that I don't think that all or even most thin members of MFP are this way. There are a few on this thread who are incredibly supportive, like @pofoster21 and @MoHousdon for example. Stick around! This thread is a great place to ask questions because, as I said earlier, we try to keep it judgement-free and friendly around here.
Aww that was nice. But I agree stick around this is hands down the best place to be.0 -

I can honestly say I have never peed in a shower/pool/ocean. I will admit that I've tried, but my body just won't let it happen lol.
Me neither. I remember having major surgery when I was 19 and the first night I was given a bedpan to pee in... even though my bladder was close to bursting, it took a LOT of effort to pee while sitting in bed.
Aaaaand... four days later, I'm finally caught up!
Yay for being caught up! In triathlon people go to the bathroom in their wetsuit and on the bike. While under extreme duress I can go in my wetsuit now (but not while swimming) I refuse to go on the bike (I think that is beyond disgusting and since I am not fast I see no reason not to stop at a portapotty on course). They even go while running...no way could I do that.
Oh wait... I think there were posts way, way back on this but: my bladder will not allow me to pee in water, but it will occasionally decide to 'let go' a bit while running
I don't think I could pee while on a bike. Would people around you get hit with it?
Yes if you are close to them you will. Gross huh?0 -
I'm so desperate to stop feeling so awful about myself, my health and my weight that I've started seeing a naturopath. As someone who prides herself on evidence based practice, this feels like a betrayal to my beliefs, but I also feel like it's going to be worth the money just to feel like I'm DOING something, even if it's something I don't necessarily believe in. Years and years of doctors telling me nothing's wrong (even when I started gaining weight whilst eating 1300 calories + 1/2 of my exercise calories) have made me feel so helpless I've turned to someone who is willing to tell me "we might be able to fix this".0

I have been having a similar issue this past week...without a test. I am sure this is partly why my weight is up and why my tummy has been off. And I am not pregnant! I might have to try those Haribo candies or whatever everyone talks about!
Good plan but I'm not sure those Haribos are pregnancy-sanctioned. I think I'll just accept my fate for a while. At least I can pretend my bloat is actually baby (it really isn't, after this weekend it's mostly barbecue meat and ice-cream!).
Sorry if I missed it, but how did the reveal go?
It's my mother's birthday in August but she will be away the entire month visiting her sisters in France. So I said, here's an early birthday present for you, open it now. It was a teeny tiny pair of baby socks with frogs on them (my mum collects frogs - it's a longstanding joke about her being French). She looked confused, then the penny eventually dropped. I said, they're a bit small for you, but they'll fit someone you know soon. She was thrilled.
My dad's first reaction was 'OH NO!' but not because he was in any way upset over becoming a grandad (he's also thrilled). It was because he realised now he has to put up with my mum's baby-obsessed craziness for the next few months and I bet it'll get WORSE once the kid is born. Poor Papa, I do feel sorry for him!
Then we went out and I had a cheeseburger, fries and ice-cream, because you only reveal to your parents they're becoming grandparents for the first time ONCE.
Good weekend!
This was a great story!
