What nobody tells you about losing weight

LOLL this is so me!! I charged it for 15 minutes yesterday so it would be charged for my 8 hour serving shift yesterday. Worth it as it ended up being a 3400 calorie burn day!!
If it's not recorded on your Fitbit, does it actually count as activity?17 -

I set out to lose enough to get back into my size 10 jeans comfortably, I’d still be technically overweight, but I’d always been overweight-just varying degrees, and this time I had crossed into the obese category.
Instead, I “discover” calorie counting and find myself easily losing to the tune of 40 + pounds and counting. I know I’ve lost clothing sizes and am at a normal weight now, but in my mind’s eye I don’t think I look much different.

My period has become more regular. Before, it usually started every 35-40 days. A little harder to predict, but longer gaps between. The last three months? 28-28-28. Like clockwork. Symptoms and pain still the same, hopefully those will go away the more I lose.14

That you will find yourself looking at the mirror more. I used to hate the full body length mirrors in my room. Now, it's not so bad.16

That your pictures would change. I no longer hide in the back of group photos.8

I look at my reflection in store windows, doors, etc a lot It makes me feel vain, but truly I'm just trying to get perspective on what size I really am now. It's a bit of a mind *kitten*.17 -
@pinuplove I completely understand. I have never been able to fully grasp that I am not as big as I once was...and I still have a lot to lose! But the changes are amazing. I actually made a chart that described my weight loss from one month to the next so I could visually see it in black and white.4

I stare at my reflection because I like looking at myself NOW. I guess I am vain, buts it's about time for me to be happy with my appearance. Bring on the vanity and the mirrors, all those years of me looking away and embarrassment are gone.
It's nice to be mostly at peace and happy with my body for once.16 -

I used to have horrifically painful periods. The one thing that helped was actually having children. After my first was born, I had no pain at all. Before children, I could always tell when my period was about to start as the tops of my legs would hurt. That all stopped after my first baby was born, to a point where I had no idea when my period would start as my cycles were all over the place.
Losing weight certainly regulated my cycles, they went from 30-35 days to 28 days. Every. Single. Month.
Still get grumpy beforehand though - snappy little crocodile doesn't come close to how grumpy I get!
I tend to cycle more during that week. It puts me in a good mood and protects others from "snappy crocodile" syndrome10 -
OK, so I like to feel my muscles in my legs...19

I have been taking more photographs of my shoulders than is perhaps strictly necessary.
...I mean, as guns go they're barely pearl-handled cleavage derringers, but I MADE THEM MY AINSEL AND I'M SO PROUD.29 -
I take my hat off to you! My attitude towards people has, unfortunately, gotten worse. I see so man fat people everywhere, whom I've never really noticed before. And my inner attitude towards them, especially towards fat parents with fat kids, is not nice. I want to shake them awake and scream at them to get a grip! Yeah, totally helpful, I know. It's just that ... ever since discovering how simple (yet not easy at all) it is to lose weight, I've seem to have lost the will to understand why not everybody is doing it. I'm not proud of this, and I'm working on my attitude, but yeah, for the moment, that's how I feel.
That's not necessarily bad, @jdubois5351 I think you feel that way because you are a good person and you care about others, and want other people to have a healthier life too. I too get upset when I see kids bringing energy drinks and fatten foods with no nutrients whatsoever to school, seeing them struggling to exercise, to breath, their teeth completely destroyed already because of the sugary drinks,... It's not the kids's fault and always try my best to encourage them to do sports and eat healthier. If you have the time, maybe try to set up a blog or Facebook page about your weight lost journey, or you could organise something in your community, a walking group or similar, to encourage others to have a healthier lifestyle.

Some people are really supportive of your healthier lifestyle, but don’t be shock when it doesn’t come from the people closest to you, suddenly you don’t know how to live, you have an eating disorder, or even “girls shouldn’t have muscles “ “your getting to thin “🙄 and these comments don’t come from a place of worry they come from a snide jealous side of someone, it can be damn right hurtful.
The other day Someone said to me “your middle aged with kids why are you bothering “ l had to laugh at that, I’m 39 I’m not over the hill yet!
And yes I’ve also lost my boobs ...oh well, the price I paid for abs 😉
But in the plus side, I feel great, sexy and healthy, I can now run 5km without having a heart attack, I’m getting stronger by the day, and my confidence is improving, so I’m sticking with it, if people in my life don’t like it, they can “jog on” 😝
Wow...how sad that someone doesn't think getting in shape in your middle years is worth it! Definitely says a lot about the person who said that to you doesn't it? To me, being in shape means I'm a better wife, mother, employee and so on...and isn't that all about being a real grown-up? Yeah, I'm not 21 and won't pass for that, but it's not about superficial looks (ok maybe a little!), it's about taking care of my health so I can be there for myself and those who depend on me too.20 -
OK, so I like to feel my muscles in my legs...
This is totally my guilty pleasure -- I lay there in bed at night, feeling the junction between my hip and my thighs because there's no fat there and it's all muscle and tendons and stuff I could never feel before so it's simultaneously weird and kinda cool, and it's like when you go to the dentist and can't stop tonguing the back of your teeth! LOL! I'm all about the top of my legs!17 -
That my bed would become uncomfortable because I can now feel my hip bones more.11
-
I actually managed to bruise my arm on my hip bones while doing jumping jacks.
Turns out that losing weight and working out does nothing about my innate clumsiness!17 -

Because you want to be able to bike and play with them? Because you want to be around for your grandkids and your great-grandkids?
Honestly, I'm 57, and I'm so damn glad I'm doing this -- I only hope I can keep it up! I think that being a healthy weight and reasonably active helps older people more than younger ones: it may not be about looking sexy, but having strength and stamina and flexibility makes a huge difference to the quality of life you have.

Totally agree. I am 62 and know that being active is even more important but a bit more difficult when you're retired. And I know that it gets really hard to do when you are lugging 50 extra pounds about. There is always a good time to get fit and healthy - and it is a very unfair assumption that being older should mean you are less interested in looking as good as possible.14 -
Bladder control. When you first start ridding your body of fat, water suddenly becomes a serious craving and you'll RUN to the bathroom every 5 minutes. It's really annoying and almost unnatural, ho much more water you'll desire to drink and how often you'll need to "GO". Then, after about a month or so, things work themselves out in this eye-rolling situation and you'll find yourself getting better and better bladder control, no matter how much water you drink. It's like your body gets used to the hoards of water you drink and again, your bladder gets stronger and stronger and you won't NEED to "GO" as often.
Muffin Top. When you're first starting, you may be able to get into smaller size jeans/pants, but there's this ugly "muffin top" that hangs over your pants and it's pretty yuck. Then as time goes by, your muffin top shrinks and shrinks and then VIOLA, the muffin top is GONE (or at least almost gone) and that's the BEST feeling and look ever!
Clothes falling off As you're getting down to size, your pants and even tops will start literally falling off of you. I NEVER wore belts when I was obese because I couldn't find belts to fit me that I liked AND was so accustomed to ill fitting clothes, I just NEVER wore belts. Once you start ridding your body of fat, belts are not only necessary but cute too!15 -
mountainmare wrote: »That seat belts will hurt on long tips. I'm sort of short and we are road warriors (have a red Mustang convertible). I tend to enjoy doing most of the driving and our typical days will be 8+hours. Last trip I noticed my shoulder and arm hurting, then I kept having to shift the seat belt because it was hitting me right on my collar bone. Never bothered me before when I had padding there. I'm going to have to get one of those "old lady" clips to make it go across my chest lower. (never considered it before because the girls were so massive)
The shoulder strap should go squarely over your collarbone, through the middle of your shoulder. Don't get a belt positioner that moves it lower, that is unsafe. Those are for if it is hitting your neck, not sitting properly on your shoulder.
What you need are one of those "sheepskin" pads.
I have a problem that mine goes up to my neck, no matter how I adjust it. When I'm wearing a regular bra my boobs used to be big enough to hold it in place properly, but now it won't stay, especially in a sports bra.3 -

This happened to me too. Periods were lie in bed miserable for the first day painful, pumped with ibuprofen and a heating pad cranked to high.
After the first kid? Nothing. Barely any cramps. My mom had a similar experience.4 -
Nobody told me that when you lose weight in your arms then long sleeve shirts will become too long in the sleeves!18

Don't worry, as you drop sizes, clothing designers also think you get shorter...aka, sleeves become too short (as well as pants)8 -

OMG yes!!!! I have to sleep with 4 pillows strategically placed now, knees and ankles become and issue sleeping on your side.5 -
That maintaining or continuing to lose once you've hit a certain point can be a huge challenge. I've lost 80 lbs and currently back up 5-10 and just feeling so frustrated, but trying not to be too hard on myself. Anything from change in schedule to injury to mindset can really cause a hangup for me so I'm trying to get past it! Keep up the good work everyone!32

The change of schedule surprised me the most. I do fine with an occasional splurge night or event. But a whole week up in the air not being able to plan ahead because family is visiting, having to accommodate their preferences and meal times + a very stressful work time I ended up rolling bit down a slippery slope of bad food habits afterwards.
It's quite easy to start down the late night poorly logged snacking and nearly painfully slow at fixing them but it's possible.10 -
Ring guards About two or three months ago, I purchased some ring guards (just knowing that as I progress towards my goal, I'll need them). Well sure enough, last weekend, my rings are starting to spin and move around my fingers (fat loss in my hands). I was totally READY for this and so glad I got some ring guards BEFORE I actually needed them.
Watersoda or Waterpop: That what I call it and use this TERRIFIC way to guzzle down a lot of water each day. When I get one of those horse size buckets of sodapop or sweet tea or even from my extra large sized smoothies, I make sure it's LOADED to the max with ice (less drink in the cup). I drink half of it and water the other half of it down. I then continuously fill it with water and drink from it all day, until the ice is gone. Then I fill it with more ice and drink is all day and night. Such a terrific way to get your water in AND the sugary taste is still there for quite a while. For those of you, who like me used to HATE drinking water, this is a terrific way to get it in!12 -
OMG @NewLIFEstyle4ME I forgot all about the rings! I was in a store one day and, boom, my wedding ring fell off and clanked on the floor! Thank God I heard it. When it is hot and humid the rings are not a problem, but come winter, look out everyone.4

That you don't mind standing. Especially when available seating has no cushioning because of an unpadded tailbone - hard surfaces are so uncomfortable.14
