What nobody tells you about losing weight

If I go a few days without enough sleep, it suddenly gets so hard to control cravings, I start feeling like a failure, I want to give up on the whole thing and I feel like I haven't made any progress. Then I finally get a good night's rest and it isn't so hard anymore to stick to my plan. Seems like I should have put it together a long time ago. Get enough sleep!!! Staying up late for that extra 'me' time is just. Not. Worth. It.
So true.

.....Appetite Regulation
In other research, sleep quantity and quality have been shown to play a role in regulating the hormone ghrelin, known as the hunger hormone that controls appetite. Discovered in 1999, this amino acid peptide is the only known peripherally produced and centrally acting hormone that influences the desire for food.....

These results suggest that sleep quality and quantity may contribute to weight loss in intervention-based studies designed to promote weight control in overweight/obese adult women.
https://ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3632337/
Sleep curtailment has become a common behavior and an increasing number of adults report sleep complaints in modern society. Laboratory studies and multiple epidemiological studies have linked short-sleep duration and poor-sleep quality to obesity risk.

The results from this study suggest that sleep deprivation could
play a significant role in the etiology of obesity in some individuals.
Wow that's fascinating. I had no idea there was so much research on it. Thanks for the links! Going to bed now!1 -
That I would ever feel like this:
I hated going to the gym. I honestly had thoughts that I could still leave whilst I already had entered through the front doors to --> It's not that I want to to I NEED to to go.

People who you hardly talked to at all will feel like commenting on your weight loss and asking what your 'secret' is.
Enjoying walking alot and having more energy.
Flirting more, what is this flirting? lol
Having to constantly buy new clothes ADDS UP. The jeans i bought only three weeks ago are now loose and keep falling down. Shirts that use to look great on me are now way too big. Ugh.
People at work staring at what you eat with great interest...even though i have told them more than once i am counting calories to eat in a calorie deficit and being active everyday.
Why do people keep thinking there is a 'secret' to weight loss? There is none!!!

No one told me I'd enjoy working out as much as I do! But I do, I love running and rediscovering my love for biking. Come summer, chances are I'll be biking to the lake on a regular basis as well to go for a swim.11

I have not figured out a way to fit a regular sleep schedule into my daily routine.
That sounds like an impossible schedule. I'm impressed you're making it to the gym at all with so little sleep! God speed man.
Thank you I do my best. I make it work and some days I'm completely fine but others really tired. I think that sleeping from like 2-7 would work for me if I can make sure I'm actually getting good sleep. The mornings when I'm exhausted are because I didn't get "good" sleep

I feel your pain. I work out at home but trying to find the time is so hard. I'm up every day at 5:30 for work (2 littles to get ready plus that's when I shower), out the door at ~7. Home around 5, eat, take kids outside to run around so they will actually sleep, kids bath, kids bed and then I'm done. Might start working out while they're running around and having their baths. Waiting until they sleep just pushes it back too late.6 -
When I weigh food like grapes, then go sit to eat them, then I notice there are a few yucky ones. I set them aside to weigh them & subtract them from the previous number then re-enter it on MFP. It's so automatic now.24

For many of you that have little ones in the house, you know that kids have no filter and say whatever is on their minds....so when your little one comments that your "tummy is going away", especially makes me feel really good because I want to be alive when they have kids....37

That I'd end up with too many clothes because I kept buying that cute t-shirt or pair of pants because I liked how I looked in them. But the reality is that I like how I LOOK better. But it's so hard to say no to a piece of clothing that's cute AND I look extra good in!!!15

ladyreva78 wrote: »The disgusting skin sag...
I think that if more people knew about this, and that it can be permanent damage, there would be a lot more people stopping themselves from getting as large as they do in the first place. They might just get to be a little overweight or even borderline obese and then stop themselves before they reach the skin-stretching-sagging level of obesity. Some people bounce back better than others. The problem is, that point is different for everyone so you might not know your limit until you've already done the damage.
Seems like most people don't think about or even know about the excess sagging skin aspect. They start putting on some weight and think they have plenty of time to turn it around - they just think they can put it off and lose it later and everything will just bounce right back like they'd always been fit. It doesn't work that way for most people, though.
I've been cursing myself about exactly this!
I'm slowly starting to reach the point where I see what permanent damage my obesity has done to my body. I suspect I'm far from done discovering the damage. If I could, I'd go back in time and have a serious chat with the younger me. But what's done is done. All I can do is move forward and prevent more damage.
Sadly, I don't think it works this way. When I was young I swore I'd never get fat. I was healthy and loved exercising, but then long work hours and no ready access to exercise over many years put the weight on, till I was knocking on 300 lbs. When you are on the 'getting fat' journey you aren't being too thoughtful and smart. Maybe my younger self could have fat shamed me into changing my older self lifestyle?13 -
I didn't realize how easy it would be to slip back into the same old habits that got me to 245 lbs in the first place. I really was doing great here, losing at least a pound per week. Then the weight loss stalled and things got stressful at work so I decided to eat at maintenance for a couple of months. That couple of months, and a vacation at the end of April, and I'm at the same weight I was at in the first week of February. And after eating a ton of sweets and snacks, it is sooooo hard to get back to eating at a deficit.18

Your residual self-image. I still picture myself slightly heavier than I am.
Also, I'm a bit concerned about how easy it might be to gain it back, like Lynn mentioned above. My sister inspired me to take more care of myself (she lost a lot of weight), but at that time I also moved and basically that ended up changing a lot of my lifestyle habits...without much thought. When I go back to the U.S. or the Americas, the lifestyle I was used to was way more sedentary.6 -

100% agree. I was at a plateau for about 7 months hovering around 80kg. I thought it was the worst! Then we went on a vacation, and afterwards stuff was happening at work that got me stressed/sad...decided I needed "one less stressor" so I gave up on self control all together. 6 weeks later I'm 3kg heavier and wishing I could go back to the "good old" 80kg! Lol
I'm back on track as of this week though, but trying to not stress out about it. More veggies, more fruit and less everything else. Hopefully I can turn this around!13 -
I feel your pain Lynn. Same problem here. Just trying to figure out how to get that switch in my head back to where I was successful. Amazing how fast weight comes back with lack of control!10

I have def enjoyed motivating other people.
Shopping is fun but yeah limit what you by while still losing. Just put away new clothes I can't fit anymore. I get two pairs of pants at a time now.
It is hard to walk past your reflection and not look.
People treat you different.
Floor work does hurt your back. I find myself looking for some sort of padding lol. A yoga mat doesn't help much.
How much easier it is to move.

I spent hundreds when i hit 180 because that was my lowest weight i could remember i figured i wanted to look great and id likely not get much smaller. Dont necessarily regret it, But was definatly a waste lol. Half the stuff i never even got a chance to wear before i was to small for them to fit as nice as id like. Now iv lost another 45 pounds and some of it looks rediculous. I now have cute sleep clothes anyway.

Earlier today I took my children to the park and the only place to sit down was on a swing. Wasn't sure if I'd fit on it, as it's been a long time . . .
So I sat on the swing. And I fit, with room to spare. Then I started to swing, because, naturally, that is what you do on a swing. Then I was swinging higher than my children were. It was terrific fun. My children either thought that I was completely mad, or that I was a really cool mum. Or possibly both. And the swing survived
Ha ha - this is a good one... aren't you mad? @MADwife2009

Uh, I forgot to remeasure before I ordered a dress online that I had been eyeing for a couple weeks. It was too big the first time I tried it on. Didn't even have to unzip it.7
