Potatoes are low calorie. How they are prepared and what you top them off with will change that of course. As is the case with just about any vegetable.
I like a baked russet with greek yogurt and a little cheese. Very filling for the relatively low calories.
I don't eat potatoes all that often, but when I do I always wonder why I don't eat them more often.0 -

Wrap a potato in foil and put in the slow cooker on low for 9 hours. That's the creamiest baked potato I've ever had. Then top it with salsa verde. Yum. Potatoes are good.0

A baked potato with crusty skin, and hot warm flesh, nothing better. Add some freshly ground pepper, some season salt, and a dash of cottage cheese.
High carbs, so if you are watching carbs, limit to a small potato. Weigh portion.

I eat sweet potatoes or golden sweet potatoes literally 5 times a week
I eat white potatoes at least once a week

If I eat some broiled fish, a potato and some salad that adds up to 400 calories, that's a better quality meal: Lean protein, good oil, vitamins, minerals, fiber. Sure, the idea that CICO determines weight loss has merit, but are we just talking about losng weight and not about staying healthy while we do it?
I know I want the potato as a spike for insulin(see GI) and then maybe some honey, the sugar listed in the pie would be third. But all 3 provide a needed spike post workout. The fat you'd get from the pie will assist in brain function so not exactly worthless. Context is important when we discuss foods, and some knowledge of a glycemic scale wouldn't hurt. I may just grab what is handy, so if the pie is nearby it goes down the gullet. To broil fish, a potato and a salad I may eat this later. And depending on the workout, several miles of running and swimming, or heavy lifting session the pie may be less then 15% of the calories I need for a day.

You know what? I was really well nourished for the day. Like I'd had a very well balanced nutrient dense day. But I was a bit peckish. You know why? I was low on fat.
I just had a very small serving of gelato. That little bit of fat was delicious and now I feel perfectly sated.
It's all about context.
That pie doesn't have to be in the 400 calorie serving, and there are times all those grams of readily available quick-absorbing carbs are needed for energy.

The other thing is that being only 400 calories is not always a good thing, depending on one's calorie limit. Sure, sometimes an avocado or some cheese is a nice way to increase calories, but sometimes pie isn't a bad choice. Also, since I personally prefer fruit pie, at least some of that sugar comes with vitamins and all that. ;-)
Not actually sure what this has to do with potatoes, however. Could be it that no one is actually willing to argue that potatoes are the devil? That's cool.0 -
Pototos have been unfairly demonised IMHO. They actually have a lot of vitimins and minerals and are one of the most satiating foods0

You can't make tater tots without potatoes. Ergo potatoes are good.0

if they fit into your macros and you like them you should eat them. A potato has more potassium than banana and has fiber, vitamin C and iron so they're not empty calories0

I eat potatoes about 1-3 times a week ... as long as you are in your calorie limit and macros its all good. I prefer real potatoes over boxed flakes, though (nutrition wise)0

I honestly never knew boxed potatoes were a thing people ate until MFP, and now I seem to be warned off them 10 times a day.0

I eat themfrequently but stick to between 150g & 200g, I love the marabel buttery potatoes from Asda and because of the lovely buttery taste you don't need to add anything to them...yummy0

Just had a baked potato for lunch, with loads of cottage cheese mixed with garlic chives and a clove of garlic (cos baked potatoes are nothing without garlic imho), grated edam cheese, and chili sauce. NOM!!! Oh yeah, and some cucumber and tomato on the side.

If you like potatoes, are satisfying to you, and you feel good when you eat one, and it fits into your calorie goals.... Then they are good for you!0

Potatoes are awesome. As others have said, full of great nutrients. I think they are very filling and satisfying for the calories, and actually kind of a treat!0

I eat them. Some weeks more frequently than others. I love potatoes. My favorite way is to make them into little breakfast potatoes0
