Pet Peeves @ Gym l v

Many treadmills have the HRM sensors on the rails.
Some of us have squiffy tummies and get motion sick on the treadmill. Carousels also make me ill. I am a colossal wimp. DO NOT JUDGE MY DAINTINESS.
On the handle bars in front yes, is that what people are talking about when they say rails? I always think of the side rails lol

If it's distracting the instructor and impeding the progress of the group then I do care. It's not fair when I pay for it.
if it is that distracting then the instructor would kick them out…

Umm, do you go to my gym? It does distract, others have commented on it also, they aren't going to kick out paying customers.
Pot calling the kettle black.
Wait, what exactly do you mean by messing around? What are they doing that is so distracting?
In a spin class for example, laughing, chatting, talking over the instructor, complaining etc. It's not asking a lot for everyone to focus for 45mins, plenty of time for socialising outside of a class.
If there are people who get annoyed watching others hold onto the running machine whilst exercising then actual phonological irritations are completely founded.
Yes, I understand this. I sometimes wonder how good of a workout someone is getting if they can have an easy conversation with their neighbor. I even had one spin instructor say something like, you're not working hard enough if you a can still hold a conversation with your neighbor. Too bad these ladies were so caught up in their conversation that they didn't even hear it.
I blame the instructor when I can hear other people sometimes because it means their music isn't loud enough

I've got a couple pet peeves.
The jerks that stand in front of the loud speaker and complain that the music is too loud
Or the ones that stand right in front of the fan and say it's too cold
What, pray tell, could be possible solutions to each of these problems??0 -

How about a person who goes into the spin room an hr before class and puts towels on like 10 bikes to reserve them? Yes this did happen at one of my old gyms, the room has glass walls into the actual gym. I went once but felt like I was steeling someones bike.

My home treadmill has the HRM sensors on both the side rails and the front rails.
Apparently, if you hold on to either, you are a huge workout poseur.
Which, if we are going to be honest about me and cardio? Fair cop.0 -

Doing that is actually bad for your health as it causes you to lean forward unnaturally. What are you holding onto while you are walking somewhere other than on a treadmill?
I'm not using a treadmill now just because for whatever reason, it hurts me more. I sold the really nice one I owned a few months ago. I held on at times, but didn't lean forward. That will be different for each person that does have to hold on.
As far as my regular walking/hiking outside, I use a large stick and am looking to get some hiking poles. I figure it looks better than the cane and walker my doctors want me to use. I was first prescribed an old lady walker in my 30s and refused and I still don't want to use one in my 40s.
I have nerve damage at L4, L5 that makes one or both legs sometimes just suddenly no longer work. There is no warning. It sucks to fall. Sucks bad. So, I hold on.
eta: I use the stick for long walks and not walking around doing normal things - yes I still fall occasionally.
So therefore, you don't use a treadmill. I wasn't talking about people who have health issues who can't use a treadmill. I was talking about people who can walk perfectly fine by themselves who still, on a treadmill, hold onto it instead of walking as they normally do.
You don't know if the motion of it causes them balance issues either. It's really not your business.
You are absolutely right. It's not my business. It annoys me, but I don't go up to people who do so, shake my finger in their face, and tell them that if they have to hold onto the treadmill, that they need to get off of it. Sheesh!
Let me just say that walking on the treadmill after doing physical therapy for months was a joyful accomplishment for me.
I had to walk at a very very slow pace and use the rails for balance because my left leg was still not quite caught up to my right leg.
Anyway, I knew I probably looked like I wasn't doing anything much to anyone, but it was amazing to me, and a step forward.
Unfortunately this has happened several times with varying degrees of recovery time.

OP, this right here is why you shouldn't judge. And why you sound take a step back and figure out what is going on in your life that something like this bothers you.
Sometimes I am squat more than my body weight. I can dead lift over 200 pounds. Sometimes my sciatica is so bad I can go 4-6 miles an hour on a stationary bike holding the handles to keep my posture correct and pressure off my lower back.
You don't know anyone's story. This thread is just sad.

Other than that, I don't really give a damn what other people do in the gym or what they wear....I'm more worried about myself. And no I'm not really antisocial, an introvert or shy; I'm actually an ambivert, I'm just really concentrated in my workout and don't have time to worry about petty things.
You shouldn't be saving the spot to begin with. If you aren't using it, it is not yours.
LOL people do it all the time and I don't complain...so you're telling me if I gotta use the bathroom and I'll be back in two minutes and I'm still not done with my exercise, I should relinquish my spot over to someone?.....LOL gtfo. That would be fine if I was just texting and someone wanted to get in on a workout with me but if I gotta use the bathroom and I'm not done with my exercise....nope.
Yes, I am telling you that. Other people need to finish their workouts too. Some of us are in a hurry. Your time is not any more valuable than someone else's.
Well, if you have to go to the restroom in the middle of a workout, I think it's reasonable to leave your stuff, go, and come right back. If you're done and you've wiped down your machine, then it's time to get off.
Your hurry is certainly no more important than my need to tinkle.
Oh, if I come upon a machine with a towel on it, I will ask the person next to me if someone had stapped away. Sometimes people forget there stuff. If they say no, I will put the person's stuff down next to the machine and use it. I've never had someone come back and say they were saving the machine, and I always take the stuff up to the front desk for lost and found.

It's so crazy the rules people in this thread feel others should be following. Maybe it's a regional thing or an age difference thing that makes people think these things, I don't know. But to be worried or concerned or bothered or annoyed, whatever you want to call it, and say it's people just wasting time, seems like you guys are using too much of your time getting annoyed with how random people spend their time.
If people want to warm up for an hour then do 1 set on each machine then go home
If someone wants to hold onto the treadmill
if someone doesn't put a lock on their locker
If the grunt loud
If they take 5 minute rest periods
If they stand in the corner staring at the wall for an hour
Who cares, it's their time, mind your business.

At the gym I am way too focused on myself and my goals to even notice what other people are doing. The only time I ever watch other people is when I want to use something that they're using, like the squat rack, and I'm just keeping an eye out as to when they're done.
Okay, there was that one time when a guy failed with a heavily loaded bar while doing bench presses, but that's because he made this terrible man-scream and like four other guys came running yelling YOU OKAY BRO I GOT YOU BRO and helped him out. It was kind of hard not to notice.
I feel like a bad person because that made me snort with laughter.
Really, when people on here tell you that some of the nicest and most helpful folks in the gym are the big dudes in the free weights area, they're not kidding. I've had a couple of them help me get a bar down from the squat rack when the last person left it way over my head (I'm only 5'2") or raising or lowering a bench with a stuck pin. Even if they do call me "ma'am" when they do it, I still appreciate it.
Agreed. The kettlebells and the floor mats etc. are in the same area of my gym as the squat rack and free weights, and more than once I've managed to entirely tip myself backwards squatting too low with a kettlebell which was too heavy for me, like a tipped-up tortoise. Every time at least one man will come over and ask if I'm alright, and crack a joke so I stop feeling so silly. I think because the potential to hurt yourself doing certain lifts with heavy weights makes people a bit more aware of one another and supportive if it goes a bit skew-iff. Very easy to keep yourself to yourself entirely during cardio, but nobody wants to see anyone get hurt or to feel it's likely to be ignored if they need help.
Ummm, I gotta know how heavy that kettlebell was and how you were squatting it to tip over.
To be honest, not that heavy. I'm a klutz and a weakling
LOL, it's ok. Everyone has to start somewhere. I'm just having a hard time picturing it. Plze to post video next time0 -

So you can't tell if you have a need to use the bathroom before you start what is most likely no more that a 10 minute session on a bench, machine, etc or wait 10 minutes till you finish with it?
There were some recreational level bros at my old gym that wore adult diapers just in case there was an issue caused by their legally questionable supplementation.

My pet peeve is when people leave weights out everywhere...I walk in and there are Dumbbells in all these random spots (on a treadmill -seriously?). Sometimes I leave them but sometimes they interfere with my own workout so I have to move them and put them back. The one that ticks me off the worst is guys leaving heavy plates on the bench press/squat/multi-gym machine. They're heavy and I have to take time to put them away so I can put my weights on the bar. I guess their moms and dads never taught them to put things away when they're done lol. Very inconsiderate and annoying.0

In light of the fact that a poster thinks 60 seconds is a reasonable amount of time to go to the bathroom and get back to your bike: My #1 pet peeve, in all life situations, is people who use the restroom and do not wash their hands. Please, take 10 minutes if you need to do so.

Unless the person is on the bike for a couple hours or has a bladder problem what is wrong with using the bathroom before or after using the bike instead of taking a random break and expecting the bike to be "held" for them?

Because you don't get to control when I need to use the bathroom. And as a matter of fact, most bathroom breaks are random. Do you pre-plan every time you will go urinate in the day?
The fact that people feel they have the right to impose rules on others like that shows a real disconnect with how people think and the amount of influence people feel they should have on how others live.
If I know I'm going to be doing something and I don't want to take a break, yeah I plan. For example, I pee before going to the weight room to workout. I don't have to go back and pee again.
I'm not imposing rules on anyone, but if you take off to go tee-tee I'm using the piece of equipment if I was planning to. You don't have a right to impose your rules on saving equipment on me.

So basically you're telling me I have to go urinate in a routine you deem acceptable. Yeah okay.
I'm curious to know how many of you people saying you'd throw away people's belonging or remove their stuff of a machine if they took to long in the bathroom actually would in real life. How many would be brave enough to touch someone's things not knowing what frame of mind that person is in and if they would confront you for it. I'm sensing a lot of this is just e-talk.
I use the treadmill for an hour or so at a time. And yes, I have to pee before the workout is finished. I pause the workout and go to the bathroom, leaving all my stuff there. I've NEVER had a problem with someone taking over my treadmill. I also have a friend with a bladder disorder who had to pee about every twenty minutes. She's never had a problem with people taking over the machine she is working on. What kind of gym are you going to?

I said it annoyed me - NOT DISTURBED me - to watch people on the treadmill and holding onto the front bars. What is wrong with you for taking that so out of context? Annoyed and completely bothered are two entirely different things. I don't CARE if they hold onto the bars, I just don't understand why not, which annoys me. However, it does NOT make me homicidal. You people really need to lighten up. Maybe reducing your calories has put you in a really bad state of mind.0

If you're like me and drink an insane amount of water before, during and after workouts (are you guys drinking enough water?) then you might have to pause and go potty during a workout. Not a crime. And despite "planning," if you gotta go you gotta go. I've never run into a problem at my apartment gym with getting my treadmill jacked while I went tinkle0
