Last time I tried one of his recommended herbal supplements I was crapping ginormus rock hard logs that would rip me open in agony. Yeah, more like "Wizard of Oz", he's a fake.

    dr oz is a quack

That's what I was thinking! How he has managed to stay on TV every day for so long is beyond me. Actually, makes me sad for society that so many people believe and support him.

Oprah endorses him. "You get a quack, you get a quack, YOU ALL GET A QUACK!!!"

Its a t.v. show and if people try what he discusses on his shows without talking to their medical professional than whose fault is that? He is a doctor but he is not everyones personal physician. I have only watched a few of his shows and I have never seen him endorse a weight loss pill. I have seen him bring people on who have successfully lost weight to talk about how they have done it. Again I have only watched a few shows. You can troll the internet and see just about anybody's face on a weight loss product whether they give their permission or not. Again these shows are not a diagnosis and people are idiots if they try anything without their doctors ok. I do not add a supplement without talking to my doctor.

When everyone gets all fired up about Dr. Oz I just have to laugh its a show if its not your thing than don't watch. If people choose to believe it than that's their choice because if it wasn't him it would be someone else.

Yeah, and the only reason I'd put a footnote on the "Quack" comments is that he was apparently an exceptionally good cardiac surgeon and clinician.

Notice that that means he was good at advising, treating, and operating on heart patients. None of which are part of what he is doing now. What he is doing now is shilling snake oil and cashing checks.

He's also apparently exceptionally good at that.

But, in terms of nutritional and weight loss advice? Oh, yeah. Money grubbing liar liar pants on fire.

If I spent time trying every recommended (or under consideration) pill/potion/addition, I would get nothing done each day. I don't watch him at all anymore (would occasionally do that when I'd have an afternoon off).

a cardiothoracic surgeon actually, not a cardiologist. He's the guy with the knife in the operating room, not the guy reading your EKG and blood work and proscribing you pills.

I think he and Dr Phil were separated at birth. Both are sell outs. Would not be surprised if both don't run for a political office.

He did do some patient consults, though. My n=1 anecdata is from a friend's mum who was one of his patients. She saw him as a consult for potential surgery and he ended up helping her find some non-surgical options. She said he was the first specialist she'd seen who'd actually taken the time to listen and discuss with her all of her options in a comprehensive and thorough manner. Even decades later, she'll note that he was one of the best doctors she's ever seen as a patient.

Of course, these days, she also shakes her head sadly when he comes on the TV and mutters "what a waste."

Of course, my friend's mum's experience doesn't contradict claims of his televised tomfoolery -- it supports it. He was a decent clinician with a charming personality and excellent bedside manner...which makes his current shenanigans all the more reprehensible, IMHO. People who are prone to believing a telegenic person end up liking and trusting him, and he's selling nothing but snake oil.

I don't but it doesn't mean I don't have to see his crap every where...cripes I can't even go to my sisters without hearing "Dr Oz said..." and watch her down green coffee bean extract....

He was called out by the senate on his "tactics" and what he endorses etc...he needs to go back to the operating room and spend less time in the make-up chair.

I have strong opinions on Oz.
I feel he is much worse than a quack. He is a liar, a fraud, a charlatan, and spouts anti-science bullphoey. He's part of what is making our society terrified of 'chemicals' and GMOs.
    I kind of loathe him.

I wouldn't call a highly educated and well respected doctor a quack and I'm not even certain of the definition. I think it is rude and disrespectful to do so.

My opinion of his show has deteriorated since the early years. In the beginning it was great that he gave air time to some of the less than mainstream doctors and their opinions about health. Dr. Oz didn't necessarily endorse them but he did give them face time in front of the camera. The public could decide for themselves.

He also discussed nutrition in practical and realistic ways. A licensed medical doctor only has two options in treatment, prescribe pharmaceuticals or do surgery. Dr. Oz showed many people that there is another tack. We are what we eat, and by modifying what we eat, we can modify our health.

Now it seems like he has slid to where all he does is offer the quick fixes that the American public wants. The public doesn't want to hear that it will take them a year or more to lose weight and regain their health, they want someone to tell them they can do it in two weeks.

You're right. Let's refer to him as a prostitute instead.

Oh and by giving these goofy things time in front of the camera he is endorsing them.

Hmmm... that's an endorsement, though, amirite?

I don't know who this guy is, actually, but I've heard some really stupid ish come out of people's mouths following the words "Well, Dr. Oz says..." so I have to assume he's a real quack.

No, I don't accept that rationale. By giving airtime to snake oil salesmen on his show, Dr. Oz legitimizes their quackery. The right thing to do with charlatans is to expose and then marginalize them, not treat them as honored guests and give them a free advertising time to make their pitch to the masses.

I suspect you are right about his show declining in quality over time. Such is the fate of any show that has to provide an hour's worth of material 5 days a week. There just isn't enough time to put together an informative and well thought out program on a particular subject every single day so Dr. Oz relies on external "content providers" to come on the show to fill time. Of course, most of these people are trying to sell something but with only one day between shows, Dr. Oz and his staff don't have time to check out their claims and to provide well thought out rebuttal and criticism. Therefore, the show is very one sided in favor of the hucksters. His audience aren't given the information they need to "decide for themselves" in an intelligent manner because they mostly only hear one side. So in my mind, his show is more of a disservice to his audience than anything else.
