So glad to have found a thread! I just started riding again for the first time in years! I have probably ridden 50 miles in the last 2 weeks. I very foolishly signed up for my first race two weeks out with ZERO training. It's this weekend (kayakalon, 1k paddle, 25k bike, 5k run). I struggled through five torturous miles this morning at the gym, whereas Wednesday's 15.6 miles (25K, race length) was a breeze and done in 55 minutes including cool down. I do exercise regularly, though I focus more on weight training and body weight exercises, and I do work hard for 40-60 minutes per session. Still nervous tho! Any advice for a strong, untrained tider? What should I work on for the next 36 hours?

Not much you can do at this point to build a base for the race. It really requires more like 6 - 12 weeks minimum. That being said, don't burn yourself out trying to do too much too late this close to the race. Get at least one endurance ride in this weekend. Next week, it wouldn't hurt to get some intervals in along the lines of race pace intervals (Zone 4). Something like 3 x 8 minutes with three minutes rest between reps on one day, and then maybe 30 minutes on Zone 3 two days later. Get another endurance ride in next weekend. Repeat your intervals on T/Th of the race week and hope that you can build some stamina.

    4/14 - 25.2

    * Corrected according to Strava. Anyone else getting discrepancies? Wonder if it's just part of free version or just matter of the limited time stamp for sampling (5s Strava verses 1s data sample from my computer)? Ride w/GPS puts elevation at just under 7200' & my computer 6725'. Getting different readings on distance also but only by 2/10 miles over 100.

Do you use your iPhone or android to record your ride, or your Garmin? If you look at the climbing challenges and you see all the people on the top of the leader boards who have oh for example 50 miles with like 7000-10,000 feet of elevation gain or even more, they all use iPhones or androids rather then a Garmin.
Here in southern ca, we have a climb that consistently doubles the actual elevation gain that it truly is, if you use your iPhone or android. And Strava automatically does the elevation correction.
Its a common complaint of people that the elevation correction should not be done the way they do it.
I find that when I map a ride on ride with GPS it is very accurate - my old Garmin 710 was consistently lower elevation then my new Garmin 510, which seems to be very comparable to ride with GPS

    4/01 - 1hr spin - 16 miles
    4/02 - 1.25hr spin - 20 miles
    4/03 - 16 miles @16.3mph 700' climbing --- First outside ride of the year!
4/05 - 32 miles @15.7mph 1,500' climbing --- Took way more effort then it should have. Have a lot further to get back in shape then i thought.
4/06 - 16 miles @17mph 700' climbing --- felt a bit better, upgraded to between ok/tired at start of ride instead of tired/week.
    4/07 - 30min spin - 8miles
    4/08 - 1hr spin - 16miles
    4/09 - 45min spin - 12 miles
    4/13 - 16 miles @17.5mph with 700' climbing. Felt okay/normal at start of ride.
4/14 - 16 miles @17mph with 700' climbing. Had some carbs (powerbar gel) for first time in a month - felt 'normal' at start of ride and after a 2nd gel energetic (first time in a month) by the end!
4/16 - 16 miles @17.2mph with 700' climbing - 80% effort and no carbs. Finally felt 'normal' so Keto might work for me after all. Going to do a longer (2hr) ride this weekend to test my 'anti-bonk' diet.
4/18 - 22 miles @19.7mph with 700' - Kept up with the 'A' riders for the first 27 min. 45min break between rides for a snack then went on 2nd ride of the morning.
4/18 - 44.5 miles @16.9mph with 2,200' - Left with middle group (16-16.5 av) but dropped them. Regrouped at top of first big hill and was caught by slow group. Still not sure what happened to the rest of the middle group (did they get passed by the slow group???). Did both rides with no carbs and 2nd ride with only 150 calories worth of nuts. (testing 'anti-bonk' keto diet). Was low energy for last hour but did better then I expected.
4/19 - 44 miles @16mph w/ 2,550' climbing. Tired from Saturday's rides but first weekend with good weather so made the most of it!
    4/21 - 20 miles @15.5 w/ 800'- back to no energy again :(
4/25 - 94 miles @16.5mph w/ 4,600' climbing. After 6 weeks I gave up on a Keto diet and back on carbs again!
    4/28 - 31 miles @18.9mph w/ 1,400' climbing. Speed training - 100% effort - with great success!
4/30 - 21.5 miles @15.3mph w/1,500' climbing. Went looking for some hills today.

    April biking miles: 389
    April goal: 300 miles

    April spinning miles: 72
    April climbing: 15,750'

I use an android phone, Sony Experia Active, and the IpBike app. The phone has a pressure sensor so elevation is based on the sensor corrected to nearest publish GPS benchmark for temperature variations. The elevation recorded is always slightly lower than Ride with GPS but the difference is not as significant as Strava. Thanks for info on Strava. I mainly use it for the tracking summary (plots).

    Friday 03 April ---- 40.52 km
    Saturday 04 April -- 35.23 km
    Sunday 05 April --- 40.11 km

    Saturday 11 April -- 82.67 km

    Sub-Total: 198.53 km (123.36 miles)

** That's my longest ride since last November. :)

    Saturday 18 April -- 92.32 km
    Sunday 19 April -- 19.05 km

    Sub-Total: 309.9 km (192.56 miles)

And again, Saturday's ride was my longest ride since last November. :)

It was a tough one that included hills, wind, more wind, continued wind, a sudden weather change from reasonably warm to freezing cold and rainy ... the wind swung around to be a full-on headwind just then ... and because I had twisted my ankle shortly before the ride, it was giving me some trouble the hill/wind combos where I was really pushing.

    Sunday's ride was a walk-in-the-park by comparison.

    Great scenery both days. :)

    Saturday 25 April -- 48.65 km ... hilly ride.

    Sub-Total: 358.55 km (222.79 miles)

Sunday 26 April -- 25.6 km flat ride

    Sub-Total: 384.15 km (238.7 miles)

And that was it for April ... only 8 rides. Guess that's what happens when darkness falls at 5:30 pm now. :)
