Same here. I don't particularly care if people see what I eat, which also means I don't particularly care if they CAN'T see what I eat, so I don't really bother changing the visibility settings.

Because some people don't like putting their private business on the World Wide Web? It's fine to do it, but hardly confounding why anyone wouldn't.

Just out of curiosity why is "eating" considered such a private act?

We shop for our food in public, we go out and eat in public, we picnic in public, movie snacks in public, at work if there is a lunch room or even if you eat at your desk...and unless you live in a deep dark cave you eat in front of people more often than you don't....so just curious?

It's not like it's a sex diary...now that I could see being private...even that I bet lots would have it public.

I was tired of people making comments like "hey, make sure you dont eat pizza it's unhealthy for you!" or "wow, too much sugar today" and other judgey comments.

Seriously? Did your friends say this or random people?

I've never gotten comments like that and would unfriend anyone who made them.

It's never happened to me, either, but I did see someone on my news feed get a "where are the fruits and veggies?" earlier today. Uh, up your *kitten*? People can be nosy, but like I said, I've never had that come up before, and my diary is far from perfect.

Wow, although that does make me want to be more observant of the comments people get on their diaries.

I don't mind at all (even enjoy) getting positive comments if people want to give them, and I give such comments to people who seem interested in feedback, and I like occasionally exchanging posts about things that look extra tasty (although I usually only look if someone else tips me off or it's someone I know is likely to have such stuff, since I'm too lazy to read lots of diaries), but that would seriously irritate me. Like I'm an adult, how I choose to eat is my business (I actually think I eat fine, but if someone wanted to say I eat too much meat or sugar or whatever I'd just think it was bizarre and busybody-ish). I assume that if people want advice they will ask, and I will do the same.

I had mine open in the distant past (different screen name now). I stated an opinion in a thread about too many processed foods in the diet, and somebody responded by tearing apart my eating habits. So I only open to friends now.

A few years ago I hooked up with a guy on Halloween. Ended up talking about it with my managers at work and received some high fives. It was really cute when one of the younger male coworkers was like "what you guys were like kissing or something?" loooool. Too cute. I'm too open with my sex life, it's so much fun to talk about! Especially when it goes WELL. I thankfully only have one bad experience out of them all... well, one bad, one embarrassing (for the guy).

That's how I was at first--just went with the default--but someone called me on having a closed diary in a discussion about dieting strategies or some such and I thought it was a fair point, so I decided to open mine.

It's not such a private act. I personally don't consider the Internet the same as general public activities. I'm not freaked about it, it's not a huge deal, I just prefer not to put much out there.

Mine is friends only, and if my friends want to troll around in my food diary (which has been woefully blank lately because I've been lazy as hell) then whatever. I have some level of trust in them to not act like total d-bags about my logging, but they are also willing to peek at it when I ask for help and say "you should up your protein at this time of day to help the ravenous hunger you've been having around 5pm." I'm also pretty up front about my bad days even if I don't log them. I do not feel the need to share my dietary habits with anyone with a MFP account though.

I would have an open sex diary....and get boo'd and hissed all the time...my husband has quite the sex drive and I don't say no... :p ever....hehe...yah I am pretty open about that too..

so there it is my food diary is open and my sex diary would be too...maybe I should start logging my sex under exercise...which goes back to the other really funny thread today....haha

I would never put a pic of my food on facebook. I never understand the mundane daily things people post on there, but to each his own.

I also personally know, or have mutual friends with, all of my facebook friends.

I was wondering that as well. But, for me, I don't share much with anyone at anytime. I don't have Facebook, Instagram or any other public forums. If I want to share something or ask an opinion, I will do it in the forums. I personally, do not even view anyone else's food journals. My intentions for this site are 1. To keep track of my food intake (without using pen/paper) and 2. IF I'm feeling particularly adventurous I will contribute to posts. Lots of days that just doesn't happen either. I deal with enough hassles at work and when I let myself get caught up in any particular posts I get the same feeling. Doing this, for me, is supposed to be fun and informative. I share a little and I read a little. Pretty much it. The friends I have are real-life (in-person), not online. This is just my preference and obviously everyone has his/her own preference. It took me months just to put this one photo up for my picture. Still not feeling great about doing that either! LOL!

Not just diary, why do people make their profile private? There is nothing in my profile that will enable someone to show up at my house or work so there is no need for privacy.

When people post on here I will sometimes look at their profile to figure out where they are at in this journey. Weight, age, sex, height, can all be pertinent information to understanding the person's post.

Don't you like climax? How boring? ;)

Why yes I do in fact! But maybe you meant to use the word suspense rather than climax? :)

Ha Ha!!! You are right.... suspense. That's the right word!

I am sure most people here would go into fits of apoplexy if they saw what, and what quantity, I ate pretty much every day.

I know people irl that do that with me in the summer as I can eat at least 400-500 more than I normally do because of increased activity...and don't believe me when I tell them I am not gaining weight....even in the winter when I eat 2k a day lots are like AMG you can't eat that much...

mine is locked to anyone not on my friends list. why? because when i'm giving advice to someone in the forum about proper nutrition, i don't need some jerk-face i don't know coming in and nitpicking my diary because i have splenda in my coffee.

Yep, pretty much how I feel! :p

Me too! I've been having success with my weight loss, doing it my way. If I ever need help, and seek it here, I would be happy to let people have a look, but until then, I want to feel free to comment on threads without fear of the "Coming from someone who...xyz" comments. ;)

I was in a thread where someone ran a report of another person's (not her friend) macro intake for the past few months. I found that pretty shocking. I guess I shouldn't care about what I eat so much. My diary is open to friends if they care curious.

I was just about to reference that same thread...a fairly well-known and helpful forum poster had her food diary copy-and-pasted to a thread with a food-by-food nitpicking and an accusation of "you eat terribly, how dare you give anyone advice!"

Joke was on the rude person, though, because the attacked party actually had been eating very healthfully for her stats and needs. But, even if she hadn't been...WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT

I've had mine referenced in a not so nice way but I don't care if people think it's funny I eat froot loops or that I eat KFC hotwings or that I eat a lot of sugar...I am down 50lbs, healthy and fit so they can take a flying leap and punish themselves and not eat nom nom foods and wonder why they fail esp since most who scrutinize others eating for being "poor" will fail.

Oh hello there! That person would have been moi! It has since been proven that the copy pasta party LIED about getting reports on my micro consumption. I should have seen it at the time, too. Saying I was low on calcium? Hello? I eat cottage cheese and yogurt every flipping day!

Anyway, whether someone's diary is open or closed is their business. I keep mine public, and a few fellow veggies on my friends list and I creep each others diaries for meal ideas and inspiration. I don't find that creepy in that sort of context. One of my friends got an idea to change her macro balance from looking at my diary.

It doesn't bother me if other people chose to keep their diaries private, except when they come onto threads and need help and won't open them.

It also didn't bother me that someone tried to publicly criticize my intake. I'm old and well past caring what other people think, even if her criticisms had had any merit.

Mine is open to friends but I am not surprised if someone else doesn't want theirs open to anyone. Like I am zero intrest in linking sites like these with my FB and having it annouce that I have lost weight. Pretty sure the random 20 something who worked for me a few years ago doesn't need to know his old boss is trying to drop weight.

Heh, could not agree with this more. The obsession with linking things to FB in general is weird, but then I have such a conflicted relationship with being on FB anyway (which is my issue, obviously).
People on here I don't mind but that doesn't mean I want non friends looking at my dairy. So cool if you want it open but don't judge or be surprised when others don't.

In that you quoted me I am assuming this is directed to me and am puzzled, since I said nothing to suggest that I want anyone else's profile [edit: meant diary, but profile works too] open or judge or whatever.

If you were directing that to the OP never mind, but you can see why I'd be confused. All I said (kind of jokingly) is that lots of things are more personal than what I eat.

Becuase they don't feel having total strangers have access to all their personal information. What could be more personal than what you ate during the day. Are you really surprised by that?

I don't disagree with your point, but quite a few things, in fact.

But I mostly eat where others can see me, so don't really think of it as super private.
