Name one misconception you had which posting on MFP has cleared up.

That we're all one big happy family.
No, that doesn't happen in real life either.0 -
"Just eat healthy foods and you'll lose weight. No weighing or measuring needed!"0
-
That I don't have to workout in my target heart rate zone to burn fat. It's all about calories in vs. calories out. The more calories out, the more fat/weight I lose.

Before that I 'believed' that 1200 cal was all I could ever eat, strength training was not that important (boy was I wrong there), weight loss is linear and evenly predictable over the weeks ie. MFP's weight prediction should be true damn it.
What can I say I was a dumb bum.....now not so much.
We care more about helping you than your feelings. Sorry....not Sorry......
This poster was actually agreeing with this, not complaining.
Yes, correct.
Adding why we do what we do.
And for that I thank everyone who has taken the time to impart their wisdom.
.....Adding that "mean" members aren't actually that way at all - They are just crusty and tired from repeating themselves over and over, trying to help others step away from the misconceptions like mine and others mentioned in this thread.
Another misconception - If said *insert diet/shake/detox/program/losing huuuge amounts of weight in small time frame* sounds too good to be true it is....

I learned (or rather choose to believe) that it does not matter what time of day you take in your calories (in reference to weight loss).
I also learned that forum veterans do not necessarily know how to recognize troll/reaction posts.0 -

That I needed to eat only crap like kale to lose weight. I'm a much nicer and happier person since I've learned to moderate my intake of amazing things, like gelato, that I love.0

Hellllz to the yeah! A "diet" where I can have bacon and Tillamook ice cream in the same day, and not be cheating, is the best thing since sliced bread. (come to think of it...I could have bacon ON Tillamook ice cream)0 -

I don't even understand Kale. I mean, Romaine Lettuce offers more, nutritionally than Kale.0 -

The fact that I'm not forcing myself to be miserable because of what I'm eating was a game changer in this being a task to this being something I'm doing willingly. The other was realizing that one bad day, or even two or three bad days in a row, was not going to land me back at 204 pounds. That psychological freedom changed my views 180 degrees.0 -
That yo-yo dieting shot my metabolism to heck and menopause means that I cannot lose weight.0
-
that I didnt have a "set weight". Oh and the food scale. OMG the food scale is so awesome.0
-
I learned what lifting heavy was and discovered SL 5x5 and other similar programs.0
-
I was reminded of the existence of Talenti gelato and learned that I should try Jeni's.0
-
I also believed in naturally thin people, and naturally fat people. Regardless of caloric intake, a naturally thin person will always be thin. LOL LOL LOL0
-
I learned (and researched a bit more to confirm) that it's generally fine to cook with olive oil.0
-
That a crappy thyroid wasn't dooming me to failure.0

This too.
Also, that grams really are a fabulous unit of measurement.0 -

I knew a world where a black unicorn and a white unicorn could agree was possible!

Like a lot of the other posters so far my biggest misconception centered around food, and that I thought I would have to eat very little. As it turns out after my daily activity is factored in most days I struggle to hit a net 1200 calories for the day...but I'll take that problem any day!0

I'm sliding into this realization myself. Not in the "set point" way, but I've always thought I was doomed to being a certain size because I couldn't seem to diet below a certain point.
I've learned about metabolic adaptation.
I've learned to like exercise.
I've learned to more accurately assess my intake.
Just a short time ago, I said on the forums that I wasn't sure that I could make my ultimate goal weight. That's not true any more. Not only am I sure of that, I'm thinking of setting it lower.

I learnt that 1200 calories was a MINIMUM amount to eat and NOT something to be proud to be under. (surprise, surprise... feel like an idiot!) & that I could eat healthily, be full as anything and still need to eat more haha. Oh... and I learnt that the voice inside my head telling me to eat whatever crap I wanted was NOT ME and that I could say no to it and be happy.0

LOL don't feel like an idiot. When I first started I thought I could only eat 1200 to lose weight. I'm now eating 1650 and still steadily losing.0 -

Haha thankyou It was such a shock when I realised I had been somehow skimming over the whole "goal" thing haha. I've upped my activity level to lightly active (it's probably more correct considering my job involves a lot of field work and I suppose if I have to wear cargo pants and boots I must do some sort of activity at work haha) and now plan to eat back 1/2 of my exercise cals and hoping to see slower but better results.
(oh and thank you for being one of the people to comment on my post when I realised all of this haha)0 -

You're very welcome. Glad I could help.0 -
I know we're not supposed to do a TLDR, but I've learned a lot here.
First misconception was that you had to eat breakfast food for breakfast. Life got better when I ditched the carb heavy cereals and ate salads for breakfast. (I'm reactive hypoglycemic, so carb heavy breakfast doesn't go well for me.)
Then I thought low carb was the solution! Yeah no, not for me (lead to full on hypoglycemia, and I was the hangriest person ever). I learned I can eat all the foods I like in moderation, and I just need to find how to work it into my day. (Carbs go over better at nigh, meh; works for me.)
Then I learned meal timing didn't matter at all, so now I skip breakfast all together.
I thought the "meatheads" were all ***** and were so annoying making all the noise in the free weight section. Now I deadlift with them, and I love what heavy lifting is doing for my body.
And like everyone else, I learned that personally, I suck at eyeballing and portion control. Food scale was an awesome purchase!0 -
That you had to eat 1,200 calories to lose weight0
