Saturday 18 -- 42.22 km with 773 metres of climbing, including one climb rated as a Category 4.

Cold!! By the time we got up into the hills, it was only about 7 or 8 degrees. Thank goodness I brought an extra fleece vest for the descent.

But it was good ride. I felt pretty good almost all the way up, but then started to run out of energy. We stopped at a little bakery, but my chocolate macaroon finger just didn't do it for me. It didn't give me the energy I hoped for. So the descending was all right, but the climbing right at the end was a bit of a struggle. I'm also experiencing a mystery back pain for some unknown reason.

Nevertheless, apparently we were faster this time than last, and we took a break this time!

The scenery on this route is beautiful ... forests, hills, and Mt Wellington topped with snow.

    Sunday 19 - 27.6 km ... flat ride today. :)

What kind of bikes do you ride?

My husband and I have a lot of bicycles!! :)

    Touring bicycles
    Folding bicycles
    Sport touring bicycles
Climbing bicycles (they're lighter than the rest)
    Racing bicycles
    Mountain bicycles
    A Tandem

And several others which are projects ... not sure how they'll end up being used yet. :)

That's pretty cool. My husband has a bike, but does not choose to ride at the moment. I have been riding on a schwinn, but recently went to a bike shop and got a road bike.

7/14, first FTP test with a real power meter. My 30min TT average power (=FTP) is 249w, 13w short of my VP estimate. Not bad for VP. But, ugh, 51w more to go before hitting age and weight mean. Hope to see 280 by end of the season but most likely mid season the next.

I got a new road bike, I had been riding on a hybrid that rides more like a mtn bike.

7/16 - First ride on new bike - 8.72 mi.
    7/21 - 25 miles

Out of town, so I won't be riding again until next week. :/

Ok so the speeds and lengths of rides here are very intimitading.....I am a former runner and blew out my knee. I had knee surgery about 2 months ago and both my dr and pt have suggested riding. So here I am. I choose to be inspired by you guys and will check back often for more inspiration and to push myself. I was told to focus more on the length of time I ride rather then miles to start. So with that being said:
July 18 - rode for 45 min -- felt good but was very sore for 2 days!!!

Same here! I was a runner and actually ran a full on a really bum knee. I had surgery and was told that I should never run again due to needing a replacement at some point. My doc suggested cycling or swimming, and since I don't have a pool, and have issues with public pools, I am now a bike rider! I am really getting into it. I ride with a group and they are great. Good luck and keep going.

Still actively running & biking (and swimming for that matter). For the most part, biking can be much easier on the knees - just try to maintain a higher cadence so you aren't putting as much pressure on them, aim for something above 80rpm (even if you are going slow).

Also, speed is mostly irrelevant, as I split time between Pittsburgh, where I'll be drenched in sweat after a 6 mile 11mph avg commute home from downtown (up 500 feet of vertical in my last 1.5 miles), but can easily coast along at 16mph on a 50 mile ride over the Florida flats.

I am thinking I might not hit my goal this month as I am only riding until Tuesday before taking a few days off to rest before my century ride on 8/1.

This is an interesting thread! For those that want to really track their data I suggest a Garmin bike computer then join Garmin connect. Congratulations for everyone on the site that loves to cycle. I started cycling to work decades ago and now it has blossomed as a passion to be an ultra endurance cyclist. Below is an example of my July mileage. The graph shows my building base miles for a 24 hour time trial race in November. I just did the Race Across the West (860 Miles) which is the mountainous part of Race Across America (3000 Miles), I did it with a two rider relay. The the mileage may seem to pile up too quickly but I have already a base from the past two years.

Feel free to ask me questions on equipment, fitness, or if you have are doing more riding I would like to pick your brain.

Nice to have you on here @distanthorizons -- I use a Garmin and have to say that it helped change the way I ride being able to have stats like cadence & hr in conjunction with speed/distance accessible all on the same screen. I would like to invest in a power sensor but haven't taken the bite on that one yet.
    What Garmin do you use?
How do you even begin to train for a 24 hour TT? What do you anticipate your distance will be in the TT?

    Cheers

I'm making progress, in the last two days I have done four rides to and from work at 10miles each way with an average speed of 14.4 mph. In Apr I was feeling good about 11 mph. Next goal is 14.75 on same ride. I'm old but refuse to die sitting still

I use a Garmin 500 it does not have real time tracking via blue tooth to a phone but some of the places I ride does not get a good signal although I think that would be a good safety feature on long night rides. At least your folks would know your approximates.

My goal is 450 miles on the 24 hour trial. A lot of miles is important to do I ride a century or over at least once a week and swim for upper body strength and balance. I also go to the experts for guidance: https://www.ultracycling.com/sections/articles/ The trick is no matter how fast you can go when at your developed anaerobic threshold (AT) you have to stay with in the previous heart zones your legs can handle as to not deplete your glycogen reserves. This is a personal area dependent on your fitness learned in training. For instance my goal is to stay at 70-75% of my max heartrate in conjunction with my resting heart rate. We can go offline to discuss these issues as this information may not be fitting to this thread.

I also thought about power meters but when it comes down to it the metric that matters on pacing is what your body can output and that is your HR. You will get in to trouble shooting to maintain watts vs real truth on physical parameters. Although power meters are a great gauge of progress but so is average speed... which in a race is all that counts...
