Not a huge cyclist, more of a runner, but I want to do both! My goal is to run 20 miles for the rest of the month and bike 25 miles for the rest of the month!

I started walking and riding this summer to improve my fitness and lose weight, since Apr 5 I have logged 1026 miles and lost 20 pounds. I am somewhat intimidated by the speeds I see posted here but I must consider I ride primarily surface streets in the city and I'm quickly approaching 64 years old. ☺ I try to average 12-12.5 mph with my best being a 13 mile ride at 13.2mph. My longest ride to date has been 46 miles. I look forward to the rain stopping so I can get back to riding. Enjoy ur weekend rides, Stay safe

I'm showing improvement, I just completed my highest average speed of 13.99 mph. It was only 7 miles but I feel good about it plus I did a 14 mile ride this morning at 12.8 mph. I'm living proof you're never to old to embark on a fitness program. BTW, yes I had a physical before I started on this road. As in all endeavors, safety first. .

    7/04 - 50 miles @17.8mph
    7/06 - 16 miles @17.8mph
7/07 - 31 miles @16.5mph -- About half way into ride I rain into a WALL of rain. Could only see where I was going by following the white line on the side of the road (and thus almost rode into a downed tree!). Luckly rain slowed down after 10 min.
7/10 - 94 miles @15.8mph w/4,900' climbing. Felt great the first 40 miles (the climbing part) but I was going too fast so felt totally dead the last 30 miles (the downhill/flat part). Not too bad for getting up at 3:30am for work and putting in a full 8hr day by noon. ;)
7/12 - 62 miles @14.8mph w/3,300' climbing. Road my old bike to give it a test spin before putting it to use at RAGBRAI next week, and man is it ever SLOW!!! Averaged about 2mph slower then same effort would have been on my new(er) bike.

    Total July miles:253
    July goal miles: 800

July goal #2: Put in a good showing for the MFP TdF bike challenge.
July goal #3: Have fun at RAGBRAI!

What I found very helpful is find a local group that has a beginner section. we call it group 3.. They will in most cases be very helpful and it will be a "no-drop" ride. They will push you, but it won't be over the top..

if you are riding to exercise as opposed to leisure, get a heart rate strap and a GPS bike computer to track your body and effort. Then... start building.. start slow...get heart rate up and keep it there for a reasonable time, then cool down.

Everyone could suggest a length or time goal, but it really is up to your body. If you are comfortable push harder, if you are spent, cool down and call it a day. I found that if I ride alone, its a different type of ride. If I ride with friends and i'm the caboose, well then I push to catch up and keep up and before long you are keeping up and having a great chat with the person next to you...

Heart rate and fitness level determine how hard you push.. Learn your max heart rate and work towards reaching that level of effort for a short interval. Slow and Steady is the build up.....

    Truly hope this helps..
