My targets for August:
Swim - 5km

Run - 40km
1 event scheduled: London Triathlon, 8th August.
1st week of August will be tapering0 -

Goals for August - as usual, completing whatever my coach tells me to do to the best of my ability.
Races:
8/2 - Iron Girl Sprint Tri (goal: sub 1:45, aggressive goal: sub-1:40, pie-in-the-sky goal: sub-1:35) - 2014 PR 1:54:40 (13 min PR over 2013)
8/16 - Old Forge Intermediate Tri (no goal yet....there is a 50/50 shot that road construction will be done in time and the course will go back to normal this year - 1000M swim/22.5 mi bike/4 mi run, so I won't be able to set a goal until I know which course we're doing, since the alternate course we did last year had a shorter swim and bike - 800M swim/18.5mi bike/4 mi run).
8/23 - Cazenovia Olympic Tri (relay - run segment) - goal sub-1 hour 10k run.

Got through my targets for July, so keeping them the same (Run 140 miles, Bike 500 miles, Swim 10 miles, Lift 9 times).
Doing the Pittsburgh sprint tri on the 8th and hoping to crack the 1:16 mark (and beat my Flat Tire time from last year's race by 10 minutes) - although I'm racing it on a walmart bike, so I'm not sure how well that will go.0 -
8/1 - pre-race brick: 5.77 mi bike in 23:08 and 1.06 mi run in 10:19 - total 33:27
Totals through 8/1:

Starting to get a bit more comfortable with both maintaining form when swimming longer distances and feeling like my stroke isn't totally falling apart when adding more speed. Not sure how far I'll get, but definitely feeling like the core muscles are finally developed.

8/2 - 6 mile run, 1 mile swim
Total: 9 mile run, 50 mile bike, 1 mile swim

Iron Girl went VERY well, especially considering almost all of my training in the last 11 months has been for endurance vs speed (we'll be working on that for next year! LOL). Race report is here, if anyone is interested: https://www.facebook.com/TBBCoachChristina/posts/10081097158674160 -
Excellent read, and bloody well done!0

A quick Q for those that might know! I went for a lake swim on sunday. Its a fairly standard triangular course, start at buoy 1, buoy 2 is about 350m away, turn to bouy3 about 125m, and then back to buoy 1 about 300m. Counter-clockwise direction.
Towards the end of my first lap, i had a bit of a panic attack when weeds had wrapped around my ankles and throat, but i managed that.
On my 2nd lap, when i reached bouy3 (bearing in mind im a breaststroker), i decided i should give freestyle another crack, and had a go at it. Thought i'd made relative progress, but when i looked up, i'd actually gone a full 90degree's to my left and about 30meters BACK towards buoy2!!
A few degree's, i could understand, but i was a full 90degree's to the left. How can that possibly happen?0 -

If I had to hazard a guess there's probably a combination of factors.
How far did you go before you sighted? I usually sight every 6-8 strokes - especially if I'm not swimming with a lot of other people. More frequently if I'm trying to sight on those itty bitty pin buoys, or if the buoys are really far apart, or if I have the glare of the sun in my face. Less frequently if I have the big inflatable buoys at a race (or if I'm lucky and there is actually a guide line that the buoys are attached to the entire stretch). The more strokes you go between sightings, the more off course you can get.
Another factor could be that you have an imbalance in your stroke. I am a left side breather...so I tend to veer to my left. I try to compensate for that by giving my non-breath strokes on my left side a bit more "oomph". This seems to be working, as I've been a pretty "straight" open water swimmer since I started doing that.
A third factor could be current/waves.
Throw two or more of those together, and I could see that being a recipe for going 90 degrees off course...0 -

Back up north, so went for a long 12 mile run today in the lovely 40% humidity despite the 80 degree heat. Also, I finally got to finish transforming my 30lb walmart beast into a rideable 24lb road bike in time for Saturday's triathlon as today I got to stick a carbon fiber fork in it (so it's done).
Planning for some running & biking again tomorrow as I'd like to do a bit more tuning on it as the new pedals are occasionally making a cracking noise (suspect I need to either tighten or lube them or the lube/tighten the new BB/crankset).

Plans to swim & lift were thwarted by a dog bite from a nasty poodle at the end of my run today. Had to get a script for an oral antibiotic, but at least got in a ride tonight. Hoping to get in a light swim & lift tomorrow in advance of Saturday morning's sprint tri.

So, my first tri is tomorrow. Its a late wave at 2:30pm, so figure i need to eat a decent but early breakfast, then a light but early lunch. Rumour in the company, is that as far as corporate team is concerned, its going to be between myself, Ben and Phil.
Ben has pulled out. Phil seems a bit nervous, just PM'd about the swim, asking how quick i swim, would it be around 19mins...
mind games - i told him 'my coach expects me to be out of the water in under 14m30'. Not a chance in hell!! More like 25mins. But i need him to over exert and burn out if i'm to reel in the gap caused by the swim.
