Supreme Court strikes down Defense of Marriage Act
By Pete Williams and Erin McClam, NBC News
In a landmark ruling for gay rights, the Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, the 1996 law blocking federal recognition of same-sex marriages.
The decision was 5-4, written by Justice Anthony Kennedy. It said that the law amounted to the “deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment.”
In a separate case, the court ruled that it could not take up a challenge to Proposition 8, the California law that banned gay marriage in that state. That decision means that gay marriage will once again be legal in California.
The ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act means that the federal government must recognize the gay marriages deemed legal by the states — 12 plus the District of Columbia, before the California case was decided. The law helps determine who is covered by more than 1,100 federal laws, programs and benefits, including Social Security survivor benefits, immigration rights and family leave.

my guess is you don't stand for anything and will fall for everything.

If you are pinning your hopes to the idea that we are uneducated simply because we disagree with you then you are welcome to test that assumption at your leisure.

I woke up, checked the news on my mobile and just started crying.  And now that Prop 8 is also dead the good people of California will again have their legal right to equal marriage restored. Today is a brilliant day in the history of the LGB community. I hope equality begins to spread quickly across the United States and the rest of the world.

aw, aren't you cute? Too bad you don't know me at all. I only stand for that which I believe in, and I believe in equality for all.

Just ignore the troll and let's keep this positive.

    I. Am. So. Happy. Between the excitement of Texas and now living in a state that no longer has Prop8 I am a happy mess.

    Yay!

For the record, don't judge all those that aren't happy as being TOTAL ignorant @$$es. I used to be one of them. Why? Because I didn't know any gay people and didn't know how it affected them. It took becoming best friends with someone that couldn't marry the person they loved. Some people that are upset by this may just need to have their eyes opened by someone that's affected, and it hasn't happened yet.

A "Supreme" waste of taxpayer money in my opinion.....anyone should be able to get married if they want to make the committment. I'm happy it went the way it did, but doesn't the government have bigger things to concern itself with?

I love this! I have never been against gay marriage and equality for all, but I appreciate those who have become willing to change their minds and see through their shoes. My boyfriend was once the same way. He is now a strong believer in gay marriage, and rights for everyone, no matter what!

Yayyyy! I am proud to be an American TODAY!

    why not proud?

5-4 vote, about the same ratio for the sentiment of the american population. that we even needed to vote on it. i could go on. Go ahead and celebrate, its good, but proud? nah. I will pass.
