I'm married with two grown kids. I never had a weight problem until I had kids. I'm from NC. Back in 2008 I was a featured success story for a popular diet plan. In 2009 they flew me to LA for my 5 seconds of fame in several TV Infomercials. Between 2009 and to the present, I've had several surgeries. I'm very accident prone. A year ago, I had a cancer scare and had a full hysterectomy. 8 weeks ago I had some knee surgery. Not that these are excuses, but it has taken me back to "square one" several times. I'm a very determined person with a lot of drive, but it can be frustrating! So, I'm back to "square one" again and need to get back to my happy place. I will. For sure. But would love to have some company and encouragement along the way. So that's the rest of the story. ;)

Not quite sure how all this works but...I'm NEW! Does that work set off the bells and whistles?

I'm 50+. I currently have a goal of losing 52lbs. One pound for each week this year. So far I'm up to 6lbs. I have a Valentine's challenge currently going under groups. Need a few more peeps in it. I'm very motivating to others but need motivation as well.

    Just call me southernsass

Greetings Southernsass!! Yep that I did :-) Our little group has no restrictions just vent, yell, we all just keep each other motivated. And if you don't come on every now and then, well then we wonder whats up. Congrats in choosing MFP, and I support your effort in losing that 52 lbs. Personally I have a ways to go still, but we all are on different paths of our journeys, some on maintaining their losses and others just beginning. You can call me Becca :-)

Evening ladies. Lillian, was a bit concerned about all you mentioned about the nice veggies you are taking to your get together, then you mentioned the nice meat tray and then you had to go check the compost? I;m not sure if compost is the same in Canada as in the US but I don't want compost along with veggies and meat tray!!!! LOL

Penny, I had to check on my calender and you are so smart. this is a leap year. I wonder if my daughter will ask her boyfriend to marry her. They have been dating aver a year now.

Christina messaged me and asked if we are still planning on meeting in Cincinatti. Huh??????? Apparently Charlie suggested it since my brother was sick and couldn't come for Christmas. This is from the same guy who tried to drive the 2.2 miles to the local walking mall but had to get home real quick because he was going to soil himself. So he wants to drive to Cincinatti now!

You remember I gave Michelle a fit bit for Christmas. She was in a work week challenge and she won. She did 200,000 steps at work. She is a shift supervisor and also has to take other peoples jobs if they are sick, etc. She does a lot of walking. I told her to never involve me in any challenge.

Got to go get things ready for church tomorrow and hang up early tonight.

Clelia, Proud of you starting! That is the hardest part, but once you get the hang of logging in every day, its empowering! Any mental baggage you have just throw in the white parts of the screen here :-) I know with me I started a journal and wrote a lot of the whys and how comes into the reasoning of my weight issue. A lot of that is messy emotional work. I wrote a letter to my mother (she has passed) telling her I forgive her for all she put me thru during high school...(long story) and then I had my therapist shred it. It has now power over me now. It was quite liberating. Just getting mental stuff down on paper is quite a release. Also you can vent on here, no worries.

sweetsouthernsass, I had Jenny Craig help me lose weight, but I lost the weight, and didn't learn anything. I went from 265 to 179 and still felt like I needed to lose more. Sure if you buy the food you lose the weight, but I didn't lose it in my head. Here is a saying that sums it all up for me:

When you relinquish your evaluation process to another person or system you begin to lose yourself. When you lose yourself, you are not able to be fully present in your life, and the world around you is robbed of your unique gift.

So no more programs for me. I don't judge others in doing those programs, its just not for me. I am still getting over the guilt of spending all that money out for a program that ultimately failed.

So now I say if its important to me, I'll find a way. If it's not, I'll find an excuse. (Actually I have a pile of index cards of great sayings that speak to me and help motivate me, and I thumb thru them daily). Reprogramming this ol brain of mine!

Made me laugh. I have finally gotten in to water aerobics four years after my doctor recommendsd it, but haven't done it for five weeks because of getting shingles and then this nasty cold. But you were doing better than me before cuz you say you "totally quit" exercising. I had never really ever started before, too over weight and out of shape. We Janets should be proud of ourselves. You go, girl friend. :) Oh, and ditto on your European chicken comment.

Welcome Grattracey91 :-) This is a great group of ladies! No fear, just take your mental baggage and throw into the white parts of the screen. lol. This is a place of venting, and just being accountable. I love it here. They all tolerate me, but when I have a bad day they are here to lift me up. When I whine they call me out on it. So you bite it, you write it on MFP. You jog it you log it on MFP. Some mantras for you. Put them on your frig.

The most important ingredient in food preparation is my MOOD!

Maybe the journey isn't so much about becoming anything. Maybe it's unbecoming everything that isn't you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.

That is quite a zen one, but I like it. Have a great rest of the weekend. Tomorrow I shall be Bean Soup Queen!

Hi all and welcome to the new people! :flowerforyou:

The base of my thumbs has been quite painful recently and kept me awake quite a bit last night. I think I have a bit of rheumatism as my knees were a bit stiff, but when I looked it up it seems to be very common and a combination of osteoarthritis and other problems. Don't like taking pills all the time, but will take a pain pill when I need to. When I'm on the rower I have to hold it without my thumbs round the handle. It's a small thing compared with what a lot of you have to put up with, but annoying. :grumble: I've had the pain on and off for years, but it's got a lot worse recently. I was putting it down to our damp weather. :ohwell:

DH 's cricket friend and his wife are coming over for Burn's Night on the 25th, so we will be doing the whole haggis ritual again. :D Horribly fattening, but it is one of my favourite things so I will have a moderate portion. It does make for a nice, easy "dinner party". Will be nice to see them as I haven't seen them since DH's big party last October. I have texted my brother as they came before, so we will see. <3 For those of you who haven't got a clue what I'm talking about, just Google Burn's Night.

Will read through the completed portion of my memoir again this afternoon. I forget what I've already written as it's taking me so long to type it out. :ohwell: I read it through on Thursday and I've already forgotten. For the benefit of the new people, I'm writing about the first nine years of my life. It's been scribbled out in pencil, but I'm now getting it into a form to publish via Amazon. It wasn't easy to write and it's proving even harder to type up and edit. I am not someone who has a lot of patience and I have never been good at attending to detail. But I am doing it. :)

Might get a chance to watch my French film today if DH is upstairs watching football or rugby.

    Much love, Heather UK

Why not? I talk to trees a lot! :flowerforyou: They're great listeners, and since their responses come from your own imagination they always very wise and say exactly what you want them to say.

Of course the trees I talk to are the ones in northern Norway, so they're very small. (Here in Svalbard we only have a couple species of willow and they grow to an inch tall at most.) In Oregon you might be talking to giants. I can see that being a bit more intimidating. >:)

Just back from the gym and (hooray!) my husband went along this time. He did a good stint on the treadmill while I threw my weight(s) around. Small step forward! Now time for lunch.

morning, ladies~ and all our new friends!!!
I am just not getting on the darn band wagon, I start well and end horribly.... will try this again.. new day.. pouring rain today all day.. so no outside activities
with all this decluttering I came home from work yesterday and did my bedroom closet, got a box and started cleaning house so to speak...
I did talk with Tom last night a bit.. and he honestly doesn't understand why he feels the way he feels.. I told him about the behavioral health benefit through his work, and gave him the number.. told him there are people who understand and can help you figure out what is going on... and he agreed to it.. I wont push hard, but gently.

Morning, afternoon and evening to some of my favorite people...

    Gayle in Minn.,
if you could freeze fat off, I wouldn't have come out of eight years in Montana at over 250 and expanding rapidly. :* Would be funny, though. Makes you wonder if shivering counts as cardio? (jk... >:) )

Grattracey91 - we have a number of folks on here who suffer with depression, both situational and clinical. Losing from 303 pounds to 137 (gastric bypass) was actually what ended my first marriage of 27 years, but I ended up finding the love of my life at 49 years old... wouldn't marry him until he turned 40, so we married a week after his 40th birthday, and ten months before my 50th. Vanity, thy name is woman. Been married 7 years in June. Helped me to understand that life isn't over until they start piling dirt on you. Hang in there with us. There is much of value here for those who struggle with that huge weight pulling at them.

As for me, it's actually easier for me to lose weight in the summer. When it's seriously sweaty in the desert, it's just hard to think about turning the stove on at all, and the thought of eating anything heavy makes you gag. And, because I'm weird, since I'm sweaty anyway, might as well exercise!

Wintertime is eating time in the South (OK, probably everywhere), and it's been hard to resist all the comfort foods. I did, however, eat 500 calories less yesterday than the day before, and I'm taking it as a small triumph. I also counted every bite and swallow, and that's a step forward. It's almost as if MFP becomes the mechanism by which I can lie to myself. If I don't note it on MFP, I didn't eat it, right? Dang it! I know I'm worth the honesty of logging my food, but it gets lost in life's shuffle sometimes. My crazy sister-in-law used to sit at the table in the kitchen eating in the dark, as if those calories didn't count--and didn't believe that anything that was liquid had calories.

Struggling, too, with searching for a job. At one level, I don't even really WANT one. I love being unscheduled, able to come and go as I please. Unfortunately, it also means scraping and pinching every penny until Lincoln screams. We're putting 20 percent of his pay in my husband's 401K for a reason, and don't want to give that up. But the tradeoff is little wiggle-room cashwise. So, because I'm seldom without a notion, I'm exploring a number of freelance writing sites. It is possible to make money freelancing, and I'm sticking with the ones that get good reviews and positive writeups from other writers. I'll let you know how it goes.

Finally, to end on a high note, I had an NSV (a non-scale victory). My best friend and I talk a couple times a week, and I mentioned that I was bored on Thursday and didn't want to accomplish anything productive, so I went to the gym and worked out. She was flabbergasted. I kinda was too. Since I can control my environment better at the warehouse, I just don't keep the comfort foods around that make it easy to eat through your boredom.

Off to go write some blog articles for one of the freelance sites. A peaceful Sunday ahead...

    Love y'all,
Lisa in blustery, windy, chilly West Texas

SouthernSass, what part of NC are you from? We have several on this thread from NC. My hubby is from Winston-Salem and still has family there. I love North Carolina. I'm a potter living in Kansas where there are very few potters, so it seems like NC is the Mecca for potters. They are all over the place! We try to go back once or twice a year to visit his sisters and go to the ocean for a few days.

Grattracey91, I'm sorry to hear that you are living alone. Stick with us and you won't feel quite so alone. We are great company and you can turn us off if we get too bossy. I'm really sorry about your divorce after 20 years. My first husband divorced me after only 8 years, and I was a basket case, and my weight skyrocketed, so I can only imagine how devestating it must have been after 20 years. Do you have any family nearby? Can you get a dog? They are not only great company, but they are an excuse to get outside and start walking off the weight. Do you work? Do you belong to a gym? Do you have girlfriends? Do you have hobbies? Do you have health issues? These are things we are going to want to know. We are nosy that way. It seems overwhelming now, but 35 pounds is doable. Don't worry. We will help you through it. Several of us have lost that much and more. Just don't think about losing it all at once, or its overwhelming. Just focus on portion control, logging your food, moving more and losing just one pound. Then, one more. Make a little game out of it. Find a way to reward yourself for losing, but don't make it a food reward. Think about how good it will feel. Make yourself a list of all the things you hate about being heavier, then cross them off as the weight comes off. For example, my (very long) list had things like...

    Can't roll over in bed
    Can't tie my own shoes
    Can't trim my toenails
Can't climb a flight of stairs
Can't see my feet when standing
Have to wear size 30 pants
Have to shop in the large section
And many, many more like this...

You get the picture. Your list probably won't be quite so extreme. Crossing those off was a huge celebration for me.

Personally, I lost 132 pounds over about 2 years, but then had some health problems and recently put back on about 15, so I'm working on getting rid of that and then will work on the rest I need to lose. One pound at a time. Total left to lose is about 40 pounds, so we could have a race.

All you new ladies...This is a very large group, and eventually you will find some members that you sort of click with, so you will find yourself looking for posts from them. Some days you might not have time to do more than skim through, but try to take time to post a little to tell us how you are doing, and what things you are dealing with in your life. My opinion is that every thing that touches our lives, good or bad, contributes in some way to our progress in getting healthier, so it's all fair game for this thread. We try to avoid talk about politics and/or religion, so as not to offend anyone, though. We try not to criticize each other, except in the nicest, most constructive way possible. Also, don't forget that you have valuable stuff to contribute too. Chime in often when something stirs you!

I post so much boring "poor me" stuff that I hope most people will just skip over it, but I still do it because it feels therapeutic to just put it down on "paper" somewhere, even if nobody reads it.

Well, the sun is coming up at last. Have a great Sunday everyone!

I agree it is rather daunting to try and join in our group. When I check in there are often 40-60 new messages. I try to respond to at least three to four. I figure over time I hopefully have responded to everyone. I appreciate those of you who respond to more because it helps me catch something I might have missed.
