Hi there. I am interested in joining in with you all if someone can tell me how I can be added to the group. Anyone here in their 40's?
Be blessed,0 -
Blessed - welcome! We take all who want to be a part of us. We have a lot of new people whose ages I don't know, but wouldn't be surprised if some of them are in their 40's. There are several of us who are 50's and 60's.
Good news gang! I went to WW today since we will be out of town at the lake on Saturday, my usual day. I'm thrilled to report a 1.4# loss in only 4 days!!! Just goes to show what tracking and minding what you eat will do for you. Last night's "one day at a time" revelation has really opened my mind to tracking.
OK, I need to check in on the work computer and get some online training completed. Chat with y'all later!

Hi Ladies-
Yes I'm on the run this week just getting back into the swing of things at the office- super busy but making progress. I think there should be a pass on meeting for the first week to catch up on emails and such- My boss is back from Spain so who knows what comes next- doing another read on R2S- and just caught a consistency issue so good I'm doing it again. We had a real issue with Last First Kiss E-book. Thank you Judy we've had to rebuild the files twice- I guess this book is meant to be a bugger- Once it is reposted on Amazon you'll need to re-download it- it will be a free update for those of you who've purchased it already.
I'll post my fiber tonight but I think I'm on track. I'm really trying to eat clean but yesterday I succumbed to a cookie and a min pack of M n M's- not a good reason I just let some emotional stuff get the best of me-
Welcome to our new friends and our old ones too-
I am 53 from western MA- I have two adult daughters and two adult step sons- married for 3 years, again, and thinking about my long term retirement plan.
I am a self published romance author with 4 books out and the 5th one due out in a few months.
I have lost 40 pounds- regained 5 recently and still need to lose 35 + the 5 I gained. I will do it this year- one way or another.
I need to exercise more and eat better. I'm a stress eater for sure with sweets being my go-to snack of choice.
I gave up all soda- diet and regular 3 years ago- and haven't looked back so I know I can make long term goals and stick to them.
The to new ladies- the core group is amazing bunch of women and the best I have ever met. I wish we all lived close to each other as I often feel that we would talk endlessly if we were together.
I need to run but I will be back.0 -

Hi all - hubby wants to go out for vietnamese tonight. SO hard to be good at a restaurant where everyone shares the entrees! At least I have soccer, so I won't be tempted to have a beer with dinner!
Karla - what are you going to put in your gym besides a treadmill?
Blessed - you "join" just by posting here...make sure you star the thread in the upper right hand corner so you can find us easily! I have 6 more months of 40s left...
Judy - I went to costco today, too! I got keurig cups, floormats for my car and a new snow shovel. It was a super quick trip, but I still spend over $100! sigh!!
Cindy - I went to college at Smith. Western MA is so different from the big cities like Boston and Hartford.0 -
Hey ladies - I am so stoked!! I got my Garmin VivoFit and synced it to the Garmin website and then synced it to My Fitness Pal!! So neat.
Fiber: Monday: 16, Tuesday 21, so far today 16 without dinner posted yet. Yea me!!
Back later,
Welcome Blessed, what is you name, your story, yes, please join us. We are all young and fun at heart no matter our actual digit!

This group is exactly what I have been hoping for! So pleased to have found you all here and will participate with you. Just finished a wonderful long hike through the forest, so ready to read and enjoy your comments. Have been on MFP previously with great results and am committed to continue towards weight and fitness goals personally. So excited to be here and eager to support others along the journey. Will check on the fiber and post later.

Finished logging daily entries, although I've found I sometimes need to add an item or two.

Hi Everyone!
Finally made it to the new board! Back to work this week and it's kicking my butt! Trying to get organized and get back on track! Take me a bit to read up on everyone!
Ruthann0 -
karla - is vivofit kind of like a fitbit?
marylynn - welcome!
ruthann - hi!0 -
Myra is 47! I live in Raleigh, NC with my husband of 12 years and our two daughters, aged 11 and 9. I have two older children from a previous marriage, a daughter, 22 and a son, 20. neither are married and no grandchildren (thank goodness!) my weight is OK, but I really struggle with food sensitivities. I have "treatment resistant depression" and find that eating sugar and flour have a tremendous effect on my depression level. my meds are constipating (TMI), therefore i require much more fiber than the average bear!!
The best anti-depressant for me, by far, is vigorous exercise, which i have unfortunately not been able to participate in for months due to pain in my hip. I am in physical therapy, but my progress has been very frustratingly slow. It has been six months since i have run, and 4 months since i have bicycled. The only thing i haven't given up is "gentle yoga", and my physical therapist knows better than to ask me to give that up too!!
I quit logging after lunch yesterday (which happens frequently), so i guess my goal is: log, no matter what.
my fiber yesterday, was 19 after lunch. the rest of the eating day is a blur, and today i'm suffering the consequences. I'm happy to say that today i'm on track. my total sugar has been 9 grams, and 8 of them were from lentils. yes, i overdid the lentils today, but .... i'm at 55 grams of fiber, LOL.
i hope someone can get a chuckle out of that, for laughter truly is the best medicine0 -
Hi, Blessed and MaryLynn. This is an open and supportive group Karla and Patti created. The more, the merrier.
Paula, hope all went well with your niece and that you are now a greta aunt. My great nephew is the light of my life. Because I was never lucky enough to have kids, my nieces are like my kids to me and it's beautiful to see them both married to quality men who adore them and make them laugh.
I have pretracked dinner (salad with shrimp and Wasa crackers) and will end the day with 32 grams of fiber. Am pleased with that -- I'd like to be above 25 grams a day most of the time. Almost slipped and picked up a snack while out but reminded myself of my mini-goal and didn't do it. Whew. (Why does food have to be so tasty???)
Ground turkey is thawing for chili and I'm hoping to get the cooking jones in the next couple of days. I'm going to try roasting a whole head of cauliflower too -- the NY Times raves about it and it seems easy.
Because I had well under four hours of sleep last night, I'm going to shower and chill tonight. May check in later but if not I'll see you all in the morning.

Lisa- Yes, the Garmin vivofit is like the fitbit but allows swimming and you can even shower and bathe in it. I have a pool in the back yard and will be to swimming come late April. I live down on the Gulf of Mexico outside of Mobile, Alabama. Roll Tide!! In my mini gym I am also going to get a small stationary bike, I have lots of weights and dvds and yoga mats already. I'm more of the dvd type, and will do them in this room after we get it set up.
RuthAnn- So glad to see you back dear. Would you like to set a mini goal for yourself? It can be anything you want.
Myra- Sorry about the hip, but boy can I relate. I aggravated mine on Monday sitting on a low stool at one of my clients. I have some physical challenges, but find I can still do the Leslie Sansone low impact aerobics dvds. I wholeheartedly agree that exercise is good for the mind and soul. We will lose our muscle mass if we don't keep some sort of regular exercise going.
Janet- I went back to sleep and got in 3 more hours!! I was almost late for my doctor appointment. All is good with me, my BP was 129/80, no on any meds for it, cholesterol is 169, but, the weight is up. I told her what I was doing here and she was glad. My niece Lainie, gifted me the Trisha Yearwood's second cookbook for Christmas, there is a low fat version of mac and cheese she raves about that has cauliflower mixed in with the noodles.
I did use the recipe builder on MFP today. It did pretty good. I had made my cabbage jambalaya. I am down 2.1 pounds since Monday. I have to keep this going girls!!

Wow, we are really getting a nice group going here.
Welcome MaryLynn and Blessed. Welcome back Ruthann and Myra. Love to see our family of friends growing with so many different regions of the country represented.
I have made only fair headway today. Woke with a sore throat that I gave no mind to but it developed into an earache, think it is just fluid build up behind the drum but it has thrown my game off a bit. I try not to take antihistamines or decongestants because of my blood pressure. So will just see how it goes. No fever or body aches, other than the ones caused by TRX, lol. So eating has been well below my calorie goal and definitely below my fiber goal, but that is just how it will be for today. I did get everything off the shelves and more than 1/2 of it put away. Nothing back up though. On 4th load of laundry and will change the sheets before I go to bed. Will keep plugging away until then.
Suzi, I am going to try to adopt your "just for today" mantra and stop worrying about tomorrow, next weekend, next month......
Thinking of Bert and praying all is well, I am sure Karla will let us know as soon as she hears anything.

HI Girls-
I did 30 minutes at 18 MPH on my e-bike. Did some reading and had a great dinner- so now I'm done for today
2 days so far this week with No S- Tuesday didn't work out. But I can build on two good days.
It is so good to see new faces with the original group.
RuthAnn- welcome
Myra- we are in the together.
Trying to decide what to have for dinner tomorrow as I need to get back to preplanning the day before. It helps me stay on track.
Has anyone heard from Bert?
I've been doing some reading and it has said that strength training is critical to lose weight- cardio is just one component- any thoughts on this?
Karla- I love Trisha's cooking show. She seems so nice....
I need to do some research but I will see you all tomorrow.0 -
Hello all - too tired for more than a quick check in. Three days in a row of 12 hour work days. I was so hungry when I got home I munched everything I could ind. Luckily most of it was protein based, but I've still blown today. Going to bed at just 8:00 - tomorrow will be another day.

Surgery went well no more pinched nerve!!0
-
Bert, thank you so much for popping in to share the good news. With the pain from the pinched nerve moving into the rear view mirror, you have to be beaming inside. So happy for you - you've had a great attitude despite the pain.
Karla, good news at the doc. You're on your way back down and all the rest looks great.0 -
Bert, so glad to hear it was a successful surgery. Hopefully this will relieve all your pain.
Patti - feel free to adopt my slogan. The more I think about it the more I think it's going to be a real game-changer for me. My biggest objection to tracking has been that I just flat couldn't stand the thought of doing it the rest of my life. One day at a time or "just for today" as they also say in AA and AlAnon, means I don't have to think about doing it for the rest of my life.
MaryLynn where do you hike? That's one of my favorite things to do!
Someone asked about weight training. I truly believe it helps with weight loss and that the older we get the more we need it. It helps prevent fractures, helps improve stability and balance. And, that lean muscle mass keeps the metabolism furnace burning hotter and longer. It's something I intend to add to my exercise routine this year. I had just begun using the weight machines at the Y last year when I hurt my ankle, then broke my foot, then had the kidney stone episode. Now, 5 months later, I'm ready to get back after it.
0 -
Bert, so happy to hear your good news. Now rest so you can come home strong.
Suzi, I am in agreement with you on the weight training. It is probably more beneficial than aerobics in the long run. I am going to be adding that to my routine very soon. The beauty is that you don't have to lift heavy weights to get results. It's all about form and slow steady movement with weights. You also don't have to do a ton of reps to get the fat burning benefits.
Did a bit more on the shelves but am done in. The sheets are going to have to wait until tomorrow. I love my waterbed but it is a bear to change the sheets and Edd is no help. He just doesn't seem to be able to lift and tuck well enough to keep the sheets on. Oh well, he he put a new battery in my car so will give him a pass on this.

Wow... What a warm welcome! Thank you ladies. I look forward to being a part of the group. My name is Vikki. I am soon to be 45 years old. I have been on MFP for a few years on and off. I have come within 1/2 lb of my goal weight twice then got lax and gained some of the weight back, but not all of it thankfully! When I was younger I worked out 6 days a week, 2 hrs a day. I was young and single and had tons of time on my hands. Over the years the Lord has blessed me with my hearts desire and other priorities: being a wife and mother. I developed an autoimmune thyroid disease after the birth of our son and began putting on weight that would not budge even with vigorous workouts. I thought "what's the point in all this hard work if I can't even lose a single pound?" I have always taken pride in working out and taking care of my body, but I began to realize that this disease and associated weight gain was beyond my control. Then I began researching thyroid medications and long story short, I have found one that is working and my sluggish thyroid is beginning to do it's job again and metabolize calories and fat. I am SO thankful that I can lose weight again and have hope again. Over the years I have changed my workouts to accommodate my aging body. I work out much more wisely now and the workout regimen I have been doing over the past couple of years works for me if I am consistent with it.
My goals are to work out 4 days a week (4 days of cardio, 3 days of strength training) and come in under my calorie goal 5 days a week. I would like to meet my goal this time and try doing a MFP maintenance program to keep off the weight. I would like to increase my muscle tone, as I feel I am getting more and more soft and squishy feeling as the years go by
Thank you again for the warm welcome and I hope I can be of some encouragement to you all as well.
Be blessed,
Vikki

And to add to the strength training question...YES, YES, YES! You will burn more calories by adding lean muscle mass. It is actually, IMO, an essential component of successful weight loss, not to mention it increases your bone density, supports your joints etc. Just do it!0
-
Feeling better today. Getting ready to order breakfast. Have a great day

Good Morning Ladies-
Bert glad the surgery went smoothly and hope you're home soon.
Vikki- thank you for the information on strength training- do you do free weights, machines or bands? I have no idea how to get started and going to a gym at this point in my life isn't for me. I have thought about curves too- any ideas anyone?
Did some reading last night about clean eating- the one sentence that stayed with me-
Don't eat it if your great grandmother didn't eat it- has me thinking a lot. Very sensible book and talks a lot about sugar substitutes, modified ingredients to take out fat etc- and of course portion control and movement.
I plan on exercising after work again tonight and I think Sat.Sun and Wed/Thurs will be my exercise days - this way I can switch things up too- Tonight I will be walking with Leslie.
Patti- I love the stories of time spent with your Mom- you sound so happy.
Karla- the weekend is fast approaching- your new in home gym is just around the corner.
Janet- are you refocused and feeling better?
Suzi- what are you doing besides yoga at the gym with Dave?
Myra- keep pushing the water will all that fiber
Diane- you're back and you've got this. You can and will get this moving in the right direction again.
MaryLynn- I may have missed it where did you hike?
RuthAnn- it's great you found us too I look forward to getting to know you
If I have missed anyone I'll catch up with you later....
Have a wonderful day-0 -
Quick check-in as I overslept, can you believe it, this morning. Great to see all the positive group discussions and learning about each other's lives.
I LOVE my Garmin. I recorded my sleep last night. Very interesting. Today I will see what steps I get in. I have two other friends that are linking their Garmin to me, plus it is putting in the activity on MFP for me. Yeaa.
Talk this afternoon,
Karla0 -
Mornin' y'all! It's gray, drizzly and overcast but pretty warm for a January morning here in OK. 43 when we got up. Later today we're going to our lake place in south central OK. Since the weather is warm and supposed to be warm again tomorrow, I hope we can get in some hiking on the trails in the park. I have new hiking boots and need to get them broken in well before we go to Arizona in late February / early March.
Off to make my oatmeal and grab a shower I'll try to check in later if I can. We don't have cell service at the lake so you won't hear from me at all tomorrow.0 -
Good morning! Got 4 1/2 hours last night -- not bad for me.
Bert, glad you are doing well.
I'm glad our little community is growing. Karla invited me to this group back in the day and I've found wonderful friends here and have had the joy of meeting both Karla and Patti in person. Hoping to meet Paula soon and Bert, I'm not that far away. Next time I go to Chicago I'd love to meet for coffee!
Vikki, I have Hashimoto's and had a total thyroidectomy last summer and radioactive iodine in October. We're still in the shakedown cruise on my meds and that is making it extra hard for me in terms of weight. Hoping to get word this spring that all the cancer has been killed by my microscopic radioactive ninja assassins and we can get to a steady maintenance dose. It affects my energy level, appetite, focus, etc. -- which I'm sure you know. But it takes time to get it all regulated so in the grand scheme of things, small potatoes.
Re tracking -- I had always thought tracking was stupid, until I decided too give it a whirl. It's not fun but has been a great help to me.
Heading out for some errands. Will probably pick up lunch to go at Panera -- want to try their black bean soup so will do a You Pick Two with soup & salad. Going for day four in a row.
And I do have some handweights -- will start playing with them. If anyone can suggest a basic guide to handweights (which I will do sitting down, due to my orthopedic insanity, which is pretty tough right now), please share.
Wishing everyone a great day -- tracking it all (just for today).0 -
Sunny and a bit warmer here in the Ohio Valley, have a dental appointment for a cleaning then TRX tonight. Will finish getting my house back in order today. Still have a bit of fluid behind my ear but at least it doesn't' hurt. I am sore today, probably because I didn't workout yesterday. I will be back in full workout mode by next week.
Vikki, thanks for sharing with us. Your perseverance on finding an answer for your thryoid issues seems to have paid off. I think your workout routine sounds sensible and workable. I know I need to add some weights into my routine. What sort of weight regimen are you doing?
Bert, yeah on feeling better.
Cindy, thanks for sharing what you are reading. I love the idea of not eating anything my Grandmother didn't eat. I think the most processed things I eat or turkey sausage and bread. Great job on getting back to exercise
Karla, so glad you like your Garmin. My original Fitbit was water proof. I could take a shower, swim and wash dishes(dang) and it worked fine. The new one is more advanced and is only water resistant. I will be interested in seeing what sort of info yours gives when you are swimming. I think I can tell mine when I am working out, especially for non aerobic workouts. Need to research it, just keep forgetting to do it.
Suzi, enjoy your time at the lake house. Hope you get your hike on.

Good morning ladies!
I'm going to have to make myself a "cheat sheet" to remember all your names it sounds like Bert is on the mend.... very happy to hear you are out of pinched nerve pain... yikes!
I agree that tracking is not fun. i don't like doing it at all, but it works. wowsers was i ever surprised when i started logging almond butter! LOL i used to be addicted to that stuff!
I love my Garmin watch. I was a runner when i bought it though, and all it does is track running. (and steps, if the GPS is off) I wear it now to track walking, but MFP always gives me credit for running, no matter what i am doing. the days i bicycled 30 miles, and then plugged my garmin into my computer for charging, it sync'd with MFP and WOAH, did i look impressive, lol. no, this chick never has, and never will, run 30 miles, especially in a couple hours, haha.
i'm so glad i read what OMG stands for, haha. my OMG is: LOG EVERY BITE. btw, how often do you folks change goals? I'm good with that one for a while (until it becomes habit (obsession) again) the next habit i need to work on is muscle building, whether it's with body weight or dumbbells.
I'll do better at responding to everyone after i make my "cheat sheet"... my self-report: I set daily goals on another supportive thread, and for today, so far, so good. i've tracked everything and i took a long walk with a friend this morning. and i'm SMILING!
have a great day everyone!0 -
Good morning all and thank you for the warm welcome!
My husband (72) and I (56) live on the west coast of Canada on Vancouver Island. We are in a beautiful part of the world for year-round activities outdoors, as the temperatures remain quite mild. Although we do get some precipitation in the form of rain or at times snow and we just layer up to get outside in the fresh air. Just feel so much better to be outside among the huge old growth trees and the house is surrounded by the same. Blessed!
Suzi - Congratulations on your accomplishments with that 1.4# loss! Mindful tracking input and output works well for us all and you are living proof! One day at a time works for me too! Thanks for your input! Look forward to hearing more about your journey.
Cindy - What a busy schedule you adhere to! Great that you find time to also include yourself and attending to your personal fitness goals. Wonderful accomplishments to write and will look for your resulting e-book. Just recognizing an emotional snacking response is a good first step that I hope to be more personally aware of too. Often is seems that it isn't what we consume, but the quantity and timing. Being in a hurry with other issues can readily lead to "grabbing something" and I remember this well. Be sure to get your rest and turn off the creativity early enough that your mind will quiet for sound sleep. For busy ladies we often miss out on a vital sleep component to healthy weight loss and maintenance. Perhaps the strength training will be equally vital for me too!
Karla - Enjoy the new tracking device. Will be interesting to hear the results over the longer term for you. Thanks for your encouraging comments and positive outlook. Awesome results on the 2 lb. loss this week as well!
Patti - Hope that a restful sleep helped to fight off that virus that seems to be stalking you. Today is a new day and when we feel "unwell" it is important to listen and be as kind to ourselves as we are to others we care about.
Eniad - Such a hectic schedule seems to take so much out of a woman. Hope you recovered with a good sleep.
Bert - Pleased for your successful surgery. Understand well how our body sometimes requires medical help to heal. Rest well and we will be here on your journey back to 100%.
Vicki - Great to have you on this journey as well. When the Lord grants our hearts desires, He also seems to provide the people to share life's ups and downs with. You can DO this! I will be here to encourage you too, as I need the focus on strength/weight training as well. It will be awesome to hear your progress as you focus on goals.
JP - With the health challenges you face, paying attention to the little things (like tracking) is sure to bring results that are positive for you personally. Looks like we are all keen to include weight training and eager to be part of it.
When I first joined MFP I faithfully tracked and got in at least an hour of cardio fun almost every day. The resulting loss of 47# in 7 months was encouraging indeed and the support of MFP friends made it feel so easy. When we relocated, I was unable to log in for weeks at a time and the results were that I gained back 1/2 of the losses. Since late November I have been back on track and being mindful too... results are just beginning once again for me.
MINI GOAL - LOGGING EVERYTHING and STRENGTH TRAINING 2X/WEEK
(body-weight movements like squats, planks, etc with focus on form)
