when i see this, i skip. i dont need to know if the ingredients are safe or not. there are enough things in there that i dont recognize that id rather stay away

Fear of the unknown, got it.

You are being flip, but yeah. Lots of people fear the unknown, and not just in food.

No. And I've been pretty open in this thread about my previous experiences and why I don't label foods as good/bad.

Do you have the same reaction to this as you do to the above?

Goal posts officially moved. The second example has zero added chemicals, right?

That's not moving the goal posts, the concern was about not understanding every ingredient in a food and thus choosing to avoid it, this just illustrates the hypocrisy in this instance.

Goal post not moved. They said if they don't know what an ingredient is, they move on. Do they know what all those ingredients/chemicals in a banana are? That's a valid question.

    ET fix. Not OP

Ever seen a banana with that on the ingredient label? Bananas are an ingredient. The above is (presumably) the chemical make-up of a banana.

Added by nature and purposeful breeding. Not down to saying "We need to breed them to have 2.6% more glucose!", just by taste. If you formulate it a bit different it starts sounding scary.
"These foods were made without regards to their ingredients, only the purpose of making them bigger, cheaper to produce and more palatable! No concerns regarding harmful ingredients were made!"

I remember someone posting a link where a new breed of potato had to be recalled because some chemical in it ended up blowing through safe amounts.

Do you know what's in an apple? What causes some people to be allergic to peanuts? I bet you a lot of money, if peanuts weren't a "natural" food, people would petition for them to be banned.

They are banned in many schools and day cares. If you mean the chemical makeup of an apple, no I do not know it. If you mean what ingredients are in it, yes - apple.

How? Everyone who has eaten bananas have died or will die. Some from cancer. Some from other stuff.

Goal posts officially moved. The second example has zero added chemicals, right?

That's not moving the goal posts, the concern was about not understanding every ingredient in a food and thus choosing to avoid it, this just illustrates the hypocrisy in this instance.

Ever seen a banana with that on the ingredient label? Bananas are an ingredient. The above is (presumably) the chemical make-up of a banana.

That's solely due to the rules of the FDA. If something is added it must be used as an ingredient. It's part of the bias that "natural is always better than synthetic". That is a fallacy that's built into nutrition. Is iron better than steel? Iron is found naturally, steel is man made/synthetic. Should we limit steel usage because of that? It's not based on any science...

They also indicated very early on in this thread that there are bad foods for everyone and that long-ingredient-list-mystery-food is an example of one. when i see this, i skip. i dont need to know if the ingredients are safe or not. there are enough things in there that i dont recognize that id rather stay away

Our own personal ignorance of what ingredients are isn't a great basis for determining if a food is safe or not. Are you saying it would be a good idea for a food scientist to eat this (because she knows the ingredients), but a bad idea for you to eat it?

So we're again in the land of subjectivity?

The whole natural == good, artificial == bad is old on these boards. It's been easily debunked time and time again.

Here we have one person saying because people haven't had a mass extinction due to bananas they're fine, while another person who agrees with his point was saying he's not gonna take the chance with additives that have been found safe for consumption because they might have some effects we just haven't noticed in all that time.

I rarely eat foods with labels like that, so it doesn't come up.

I read labels and if I don't know what something is/am concerned about it might look into it further.

Just having chemical names on a label doesn't bother me, though.

How? Everyone who has eaten bananas have died or will die. Some from cancer. Some from other stuff.

despite popular belief, common sense does exist, as does anecdotal evidence, which, frankly, i trust more than empirical data. bananas don't cause cancer. i can say that with certainty with no science to back it up

You trust anecdotal evidence more than empirical data?

So when I tell you that my grandfather smoked two packs a day and he lived to be 95, you conclude that smoking is safe?

If common sense was worth a cow's fart, we wouldn't have scientists today.
But as is obvious from your posts, you don't care much for science apparently.

If someone can look at the ingredient list from that food item above and then look at the individual components that make of a banana and not think any differently about them, wow. This is stuff I think understood when I was a kid. But apparently, it's such a difficult concept for some to grasp.
