I can't claim to be an expert, but I did start running at age 55, and I'm faster at 60 than I was at 55, 56, or 57. Things I think I know that help speed, in no particular order:

    - Intervals.
    - Recovery.
    - Run slower to run faster.
    - Older guys only need one day of speed work per week.
    - Good form and running efficiency.
    - Train for that distance.
    - Realistic expectations.

SO MUCH love for this whole post. I am another 50+ runner, and I keep having to reorient my perspective to run slower, so I can run more.

A big welcome to the month for all the new folks - we're really glad to have you here with us! Us crazies need new blood so we can spread the addiction!

Welcome back for all us old crazies!

I'm in. I'll go super conservative and pledge to run/walk .5 a day = 15 miles rounding up.
I know its a weekend run to some here. But setting the bar low. Hopefully I can shatter it and get a better idea of what I can really do for march.

15 miles is SO MUCH better than 0 miles! Every single step you take for fitness (and for fun!) is a good one. Welcome aboard.

@7lenny7 - So, your training plan is like the speed limit? Just a suggestion!

@karllundy, upon consultation with my lawyers, I decline to comment.

Old? Who you calling old? I'm still in my 40's for now, and only half of my beard is grey.

No goal until I see the physical therapist this afternoon and he gives me his professional opinion concerning the return timeline. The hip area is definitely better, but he's the one with all the letters after his name so I'm going to defer to his knowledge ;)

02/20 Snowman Stampede 10 mile race
04/24 Graffiti Run with grandkids - "Memaw's Mini Posse" is our team name!
    04/30 Greenland Trail Race...8 mile
    05/15 Colfax Marathon (Half)
08/07 Tri for the Cure Sprint Triathlon
09/05 Labor Day Mini Marathon (Half)
    10/16 Rock-n-Roll Denver Half

I am back after my rest.....err year.

I did 45k in 9 runs in January, just to make sure I knew what jogging was still.

in Feb am looking to do 65k in 13 runs. With no walk interval by the end of the month.

I'm in! New to MFP and Garmin Connect. My goal will be 25 miles because I had stopped running for a while and am currently recovering from a sprained ankle.

Welcome to the group! I'm on Garmin connect (and Strava) too. Same screen name if you (anyone) wants to add me. I like the leaderboard, but @Stoshew71 is always #1. :grimace: ha-ha!

Welcome to the newbies and congrats to everyone who has started this month off with a bang (or a rest--yes, I congratulate you, too. Resting is hard work!)

I did my first run for the month today on the treadmill, where I so often find myself these days. It's Fast and Furious Week at the gym. The pull of the street on a gray cloudy day has nothing on Vin Diesel. Sorry, outdoors.

    1/31 Rest
    2/1 6.25 @ 12.00 on the treadmill
    2/2
    2/3
    2/4
    2/5
    2/6
    (6.25/25 for the week)

    Upcoming Races:
Feb. 14 Run Your Heart Out 5K, Reston, VA
Feb. 22 Disney Princess Half Marathon, Orlando, FL

@5BeautifulDays I'm not feeling the "sorry, outdoors"...nope, not feeling it. From your post, I'm sorta feeling more like "in your face stupid cloudy cold outdoors...I'm gettin' it done without you!!" is more like what I am hearing you say!

    Fist pump!

Seriously though...here in Northern VA there are definitely brave souls out there kicking it on the slushy and sometimes mountainous sidewalks, but I am old and hate the cold and *really* hate falling on my butt, which is already broken and doesn't need further injury. So treadmill it is, at least for a few more days of melt. And if I can have my run and Vin Diesel, too? All the better. :)
