WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR MARCH 2016

Today is my cheat day. I allow myself 1 day every two weeks where I can eat what I deem "totally inappropriate, marginally nutritional" food. I allow myself to go over my allotted calories by 200 calories. So for lunch today, I had a Whataburger hamburger, fries, and a Dr. Pepper. After 2 sips of the soda, I decided it was too sweet and switched to water (saving me a ton of calories). As a lifetime member of the "clean plate club", I am trying to reprogram myself to stop eating when I'm full and not when the food is gone. So, as I am eating, I notice that I am getting full. I stopped eating before I ate all of my fries (I ate about 1/2 the box). This is HUGE for me. I never leave fries. So not only did my body not like the soda, but I listened when it said that's enough food and I am satisfied. This is a cheat day first and I am so proud of myself! Hope everyone else can remember to celebrate the small steps that lead to a new life.

Here we are, another day, another month.Barbie you do a good job moving us in the right direction.
Yesterday our weatherman said " in just a couple weeks, winter will be over for us".Sounds great, even tho I prefer cooler temps.
Welcome new members, tell us something about yourself & the name you like to use.
Last mo,I went to the Dr with DH & asked him about exercise to ease my sore shoulder/collarbone.His advice was to go very easy & after 2-3 mos,see if it helps. Said exercise is good, but it can be a two edged sword for older....people....... that's me.
Standing push offs, arm exercises using light weights & stretching. So far,so good. DH said No to my idea of kettle balls.....saying I'd prob let fly & cost us a new window.....or hospital bill
Allie, you have had a lot of advice, just hope you can work it out.One saying that works for me in many instances is "if not now...when?"
Miriam,love your yard & flowers.Your work shows!
Carol in NC,so glad to hear things are looking up. We always miss you.
Supper today is chili with cheese & crackers. Then will divide into zip locks for freezing.
Our only Grandaughter is miserable with an infected molar tooth. She is on antibiotics, then will have surgery. She had a mild tooth ache on last day of their cruise, woke the next morn with swollen face & a ton of pain.
Our Great Grson is 2 this month. Will add a pic. He's the only Grchild on both sides, only nephew, only Gr grandchild. Will surely be a wonder if he isn't spoiled. Pics not working Patinoh

I am looking for ideas for packing my meals during the days I work. I am a nurse working 3-4 12 hour shifts, 7am to 7pm. I struggle with eating the same foods every day. The choices in our cafeteria are not on the healthy side... salads are getting boring! any ideas my new friends.
I lived in Japan for years and many people there eat bento boxes for lunch every day. A bento box is a meal that is made up of just a couple of bites of several different foods. For example, 3 bites of salad, one chicken nugget, 2 pieces of brown rice sushi, a couple of bites of a vegetable, and a couple of bits of a noodle dish. If you do a "cook for a week" plan on your day off or save even small bits of leftovers, you can easily put one together. To keep the food separated, use cupcake liners and put several liners in a sealable lunch box. Another easy way to do this (if you don't enjoy cooking), is hit the salad bar and pre-cooked food area of your local food market. Buy your favorites is the smallest amounts possible and divide. By doing this by the time you are "bored" with the taste of the same old lunch you have finished that portion and can move on to the next taste. Good luck!0 -

Sewicanquilt: Thank you so much for the idea. If I pick up 1/2 cup serving containers with lids that might be the perfect size. Then I can mix and match items as to not get bored.0 -
Exermom – In GA you are supposed to pull over and stop when meeting a funeral unless it is an Interstate (and double roads separated by a grass median). You are not supposed to pass one [not supposed to pass family car and/or hearse] if you come up beside them on a double road or cut into the middle of it. Usually all funeral processions have a police car or motorcycle at the beginning and one at the end of a procession. There should be 2 or 3 motorcycle police or cars to stop traffic going through red lights; but, that is left to the family for more than 2. Supposed to have your lights on and a sign in the front window or flag or sign on car. But, if there is not policeman at an intersection you are supposed to wait at a red light until traffic is clear then you may cross even on a red light. You are suppose to stay close together so that people know you are in a funeral procession. Once the hearse and family cars go by you can get back on the road and drive. A lot of people stay stopped until the last person goes by. That is a matter for one's beliefs and manners. Most funeral processions will take the least traveled road. Several years ago a high respected detective was killing the line of duty and there were so many police you would have been crazy to break any of the laws. Long procession and 5 or 6 cars pulled over for not showing respect. It’s law; but, it is also respect.
Janetr – Have you ever been checked for blood clots?
Suzy – I bought the Marie Kondo “Spark Joy” which gives you picture instructions on how to ‘fold’ the clothes that go in your draw. That’s what I was most interested in. I’m not so good at trying to read directions; I’m a visual person … show me what it is supposed to look like in the end; I can put it together. If I had attempted to put an easel together that I bought; I’d still be working on it. The written directions were wrong.
DH is home from having his cystoscopy (where the MD sticks [as he said] a hose up your penis into the bladder with a small camera on it. They found some scar tissue so he removed that; and he's got a catheter and Foley bag; not a happy camper. Said it hurt like a sum 'o beach. Given Cipro (antibiotic) and a 'few' Percocet (for pain). He was starving; but we had 2 stops to make so he sat in the car and waited for me. He had first said to stop and get a pizza; then the nausea started. I got him a sandwich at the Publix Deli - I got a Reuben and only ate 1/2 of it; will eat the other half tomorrow.

Feb goals:
• Wear one nice outfit from my closet per week, don't dress down every day--Accomplished
• log every bite and step—Accomplished
• breathe in and breathe out when the going gets tough—yes, I did not stop breathing
• get to the library to catch up on some reading---not even one trip!
• be kind to myself and others everyday—pretty good
March goals:
• focus on having less food wasted in my kitchen
• Eat out less
• Monitor grocery bill more carefully
• Log every bite and step
• Be kind to myself and others everyday
So I am looking to stash away more cash and the best way for me to do that right now, is to focus on my food shopping and eating out. I am being more watchful since we are looking at big big bills coming our way including college tuition. We’ve got to tighten our belts somewhere. Belt tightening is a good thing, it must mean I will drop a few pounds maybe?
DD is still not eating due to stomach bug and fear of vomiting, I have to relax and get some basic food into her, (she is drinking electrolites) without stressing out, but my goodness she is weak as a kitten, I will take her in to doc tomorrow if no improvement.

Grits and Sluts - Yes I have a vein specialist doc. She did ultra sounds on both legs and checked the veins, they were all clear. I was still heavy at that point. I'm thinking of going back now and having the veins collapsed, or whatever they do to them now, to get rid of them. They stick out and are very ugly since I lost 125 pounds.
Thanks, Janetr OKC0 -
Thanks Fanncy - It must be - he had pain meds given to him after the procedure and took a pain pill when we got home about 30 - 45 minutes later. I think he is most unhappy about having to wear a bag. They will remove it in week. He'll have to have sponge baths until then. He definitely won't feel like toting around or carrying any ladders for sure. I've got to have the same procedure done in mid-March - but they won't be putting me to sleep like they did him; but, my bladder is a lot closer to the outside than a man's. Makes me nauseous thinking about it to tell you the truth.

Today is my baby girl's 25th birthday. We are going to dinner at Olive Garden. Not my choice, but that's where she wants to go and it is her birthday. I see lots of calories in my future........0

you are funny, that is "sweet" of you to say that!
katla - yeah, I did get a good one, I think i'll keep him0 -
Good afternoon!
DLS1029 - Olive Garden has several lower calorie choices on their menu and the ones I've had are quite good. Just stay away from the bread sticks--they're demons!!
Pat - I've had an infection in an impacted wisdom tooth so I REALLY empathize with your granddaughter. I hope she gets if fixed soon!
My spell of eating everything in sight has cost me 2 lbs. I was quite anxious when I got on the scales this morning, but ended up being relieved.
After almost nine months of not walking with any regularity, I hit over 12,000 steps yesterday. Granted, I would have stopped at 11,000 but I had calories to burn off. And, best of all, when I did my "real" walk, I averaged a 16 minute mile. That gives me hope that I can get back to 4 mph without too much trouble. I may end up staying after work and walking inside today. I left a little early yesterday so that I could get home and walk outside before dark, but I need to stay all the way til 6 p.m. today. Only 12 more days until it will be daylight when I get home!!
Jane - I'm sorry you woke up to snow. It is 71 and sunny here. Tomorrow won't be so great, but at least they're no longer calling for snow and yuck this weekend.
Michele - My left ankle will sometimes swell though my right ankle stays normal. It is usually after a long car ride that it gets the worst. If it doesn't go down soon, you might want to have it checked. On your way back from FL, you might want to stop and walk more frequently.
I'm looking forward to my lasagna tonight. I don't have salad greens so I'm going to have a big helping of mixed raw vegetables. I want to cut up enough that I can have some packed in bags and ready to grab out of the fridge to put in my lunchbox.
Alison - I get the compromise thing because you're married, but I will tell you that my husband's flat refusal to "allow" me to do things that I wanted to do (even for our children), built up a ton of resentment. Tom seems to do pretty much what he wants to do and I think a trip to TN is fair trade for his trip alone to FL. But, I don't have to live in your shoes.
Okay, I'm going to go take a walk to the restroom that's as far away from my office and still stay on the same floor. Hope everyone has a wonderful evening/night/etc.

Today's workout: 3 sets of 15 of each. Supermans, Lat pull down (40 lbs I think, can't remember), seated row (50 lbs), bent over row (just the bar, 35 lbs, I think), bicep curls and hammer curls (1 set of each with 10 lb Dumbbells then dropped down to 8 lbs), 15 minutes on the elliptical before workout and 30 minutes on treadmill after. I still need to do some ab exercises. I plan to do planks in a bit.
No gym tomorrow. I need to go shopping with my mother, and she is too impatient to get going in the morning. I'm going to try to get in a walk before she gets here and maybe some squats or something that I can do at home.
I'm back to my low weight of September, but I definitely have less inches. Onederland is once again in sight, maybe by Mother's Day, probably not by Easter. People at the gym are commenting that they are seeing less of me.
Welcome to all the newbies!0 -
Hi gals,
Barbie – Thank you for starting us on another month!
Shalck – sugars are tucked in a lot of foods you would not expect it to be…. You can set MFP to track sugar and carbs, that helped me find some sugar in unexpected places
Michele – my only advice on the swollen foot is the Doc….
Anne – thinking of you! (((((hugs)))))))))))))))))
Sewicanquilt – Goals are great if they help motivate, guide or encourage YOU - 25 more steps a day- you go girl. **** Later*********** awesome on the cheat day success ****
Miriam – sending good thoughts to you and kitty!
Gia- no tail tucking here – jump right in and join the fun
Drcrisos – love the puppy in your profile pic
Suzy – welcome – 9 lbs in a month can be a very tough goal….
DeborahD…- Welcome
Donna – I keep forgetting to mention… ask are you a John Denver fan?
Betty – You can do this, happy can be faked – which sounds dorky, but if you fake it somehow it seems to take hold and become real.
Pip – A good solid roof is the best and most un-rewarding place to spend money – it protects everything but is boring!
DLS – check olive garden’s web page – there are some good choices!
Goals - Well I did not make any feb goals… so I did not fail at any! LOL
March:
Log everything everyday
Walk 100 miles (according to my fitbit)
Do something fun each week
Do one thing that is outside my comfort zone this month

Happy March 1st!-
I am so glad that I was able to find this group of lovely ladies again! Only had time to skim the posts but I recognize a lot of old faces and and welcome to all the new ones! Unfortunately, during my time away from MyFitnessPal, I put the weight back on. But the good news is that I am not defeated; I'm ready to start the challenge of getting fit once again. And the super good news is that I became a grandma, 5 weeks ago! My grandson was born 8 weeks early since delaying the birth was not an option due to serious, life-threatening complications with my daughter-in-law's health. He was in the NICU for 24 days and had to make a short trip back to the hospital due to infection last week but is home again and thriving. Also, for those of you who know about my college experience the last few years, I only have few more months to go and will be graduating this summer!!!
I started logging again today and will hopefully be joining the Y by week's end.
March goals:
Log my food daily-no excuses!
Check in here at least three times a week; I know that I can't do this alone.
Up my water intake.
Find a pool, whether is the Y or elsewhere and get back to my beloved water exercise -2X a week at least (The pool closed in November where I had been going for Water Zumba for over 5 yrs. )0 -
Well, the SWISH session went well. I found a huge black caftan in the back of my wardrobe that I bought in Egypt when I was big (but not as big as I got later) , so I took that along. On the racks I saw a cute little wool swing jacket in grey, with pink and blue checks. Not the sort of thing I normally wear, but I thought, as it was free, I'd try it on. Size 6 USA. It was a bit too tight across the bust done up, but fine undone, so I took it. It'll be a fun thing to wear out to lunches with my friend as she wears that kind of thing. It's quite short and modern, but definitely my colours.
I would like to wear it tomorrow, but it's going to be wintry with sleet, so I'll need a proper warm coat. My navy leggings didn't arrive, so unless they come tomorrow morning I'll have to wear something other than my new dress.
Cheri - Best wishes for the job! I can imagine you really want things settled. :flowerforyou:
Katla - Have a great visit! Sorry they are moving so far away.
Margaret - You are doing a great job! :flowerforyou:
Grits - Ouch! ! ! Make a fuss of him.
Pip - We have just had our guttering done. Big $$$$$$
Got to pay for our cruise this week. We are each paying our own half. Probably Thursday. I have already taken my money out of savings. But I promised myself this as a reward for selling the rental, so I mustn't begrudge the money and just be grateful I have it. You can't take it with you. :noway:
Love to all from Heather, with a new jacket, in Hampshire UK0 -
Well hope I am on the right track now.
Kimses--Congrates on the new job. Sounds like you are excited about starting this new chapter.
I had an NSV while on our trip. We got a room with a hot tub. Never done that before and so DH and were able to enjoy the jets and relax. We both fit and that would of never happen before if I would of even tried getting in.
Joyce--How sweet of you to think of Allison and doing something speical for her. Proud to have you as my friend.
I'm joining the push up group. Have one set done so far today. Plan to do a set each time I go to the restroom. Mine are wall push ups for now. Will work my way down.
Lenora--Sending hugs and prayers.
Carol--Sending hugs and prayers for you also.
Sylvia--Men are like that. DH will get so upset about something the dogs will do and when I asked if he wants to find them new homes he says, (No of course not!!).
KJ--Sorry to hear about your sister, sending hugs and prayers.
pip--Love the fence. Looks so nice
I am up to page 68 of last month so will start again tomorrow. Have a good night ladies and take care.
Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND, NE0 -
Heather: I'm sorry DS & DDIL are moving so far away, too. On the other hand, this is a good assignment for them and ever so much better than what might have been. We will work on enjoying our lives and visit when we can. :ohwell' :flowerforyou:

Yeah my DH is getting a lot of babying coming his way. I went to vote; he did not feel like it, getting in and out of a seating position is not very comfortable. The bag is 'hot'; it rubs him, he can't tell when he needs to empty it. The more he drinks, they more he'll go. I've had catheter when I had a very bad wreck and was bedridden. It's a funny sensation to want to stop it when you just need to let it go -it makes you think if you do, you'll wet yourself.0

Thank you for all the support today. It has been a rough one. Feel like I can't let go and move forward. Every time I feel like I make progress it all starts to come crashing down again.

Did SWSY workout:
Chair Stand: 8 reps/2 sets
Standing Leg Curl: 8 reps/2 sets 3 lbs
Knee Extension: 8 reps/2 sets 3 lbs
Side Hip Raise: 8 reps/2 sets 3 lbs
Biceps Curl: 8 reps/2 sets 3 lbs
Overhead Press: 8 reps/2 sets 3 lbs
Upward Row: 8 reps/ 2 sets 3 lbs
Toe Stand: 8 reps/ 2 sets Level 1
These are very low weights compared to where I originally was but being extremely cautious as to not set off my compressed nerve in my back and other issues. Tomorrow I will do my PT routine sent home with me from my therapist.
Today was a special day for our extended family on my side. My niece delivered a very healthy baby boy. She is a 30+ year old woman who decided to have a child on her own. She is an accomplished nurse in NICU. He was just over 9 lbs! Ended up with a cesarean section as he was facing up and wouldn't turn for delivery. She has an awesome support system in my brother's family. I now have 7 greats from his 3 daughters and one more on the way! Cannot wait to go to Virginia and see them all when we go to help our daughter look for an apartment there in a month or 2.
Welcome everyone who is new. This is an awesome group of women! Prayers and blessings to all in need.

I lived in Japan during the 80's 7 years, (two Navy tours). As a dependent, I immersed myself into society, loved it! I miss the life you know... From the "dirty dishes" store, to the neighborhood ramen places. My son called the owner " Ojiisan" (grandfather) and the owner gave us cut fresh fruit (not on the menu). Was part of the housewives group that bought things from the vegetable truck that came by the huge apartment that was across from mine off-base. We would buy organic items then split it up between us. Felt really apart of the society. My son played with their children.

Hello! Just started the 'Matmadness' challenge at my fitness room: meaning being on the mat - working out - every day in March. Hope I will keep up with that. For sure will need support. My goal is to lose weight and get back to healthier lifestyle choices in general. I was happy to see all the different posts - being ina community is a first for me - looking forward to it though!0

Anne - I'm here for you. It's ok to take really tiny, tiny steps and even no steps forward some days. Let yourself feel bad and don't put a time limit on that. If we try to "push" past pain it often just makes it last longer. You have the right to feel bad. Be gentle with yourself and reward yourself for whatever you feel is a positive. Some days, that may just be getting out of bed!
