Since I had a MIrena IUD placed, yes. Every 28 days between 9:00 am and 10:00 am. It's such a relief to have that regularity after years of never knowing.2 -

If I'm in maintenance or a surplus, yeah. 28 days. I can feel ovulation around the standard 14 day mark. If I'm in a deficit and I'm relatively lean...who knows. I completely skipped last month. The month before I bled for 10 days.1 -
This post is amazing. I had a hysterectomy a few years ago, so I don't get the menstruation anymore. I still have my ovaries though, so I still get the rest of it. However I've lost track of my cycle, so I was frustrated when I only lost a pound this week. Then I saw your post, and I checked for the one sign it was my TOM- a hivey rash on my breasts and sure enough it was there. I'm submitting this for sticky nomination!1

Bump again ...1

I didn't realize that you can retain water around ovulation, but now that I'm paying attention, that totally happens to me. Nice to have some explanation for some of my fluctuations.5

Good post OP and should clear up most womens concerns about TOM0

I don't mean to post TMI but I wanted to give a little example of just how much craziness your cycle can cause on the scale. During my last ovulation I am 99% sure I had a large cyst that burst and it was late. I was just trying to get into a deficit. I was bloated, in pain, and not losing. Now, just because I ovulated late doesn't mean I got my period late, so only a few days later I got my period. For some reason I bled for 10 days. Now here I am thinking this is a good week to get an accurate weigh in, period is over, right? But the scale was up 4 lbs this morning. Then I remembered that I bled for 10 days, so here we are back at ovulation and retaining water again. Can you imagine how frustrating this would be for someone who is new to calorie counting?! It's still frustrating for me!
And also how frustrating it is for those women who have 10 day periods all the time
Are you ok? A cyst sounds terrible!
Aw I'm all good. Cysts are fairly common. Thanks for asking!
Great article! Totally explains why my appetite was so much higher the week before TOM. And @arditarose, I get cycts frequently too. That could also explain your 10day bleed. Started early with cyst bleed, then period bleed. I'm done having kids, so I have seriously thought about just getting rid of the whole thing. Keeping my ovaries, but getting rid of the rest. I don't need it and it's such a PIA.0 -

Yeah I think most people experience that hunger/symptoms the week before. That's why it's called PRE-menstrual syndrome lol. But yeah, I know. Dealing with a funky cycle and hormones is just getting to be too much.1 -

Always nice to know that I'm not alone!
I want to get rid of the ovaries, personally, they're the cause of my issue, lol!

I wish I could too ... and I came really close about a year ago. But they wouldn't do the hysterectomy.
For a year (2014), I was bleeding 2-3 weeks each month. On for 10 days or 2 weeks, off for a few days, back on for a few days, off for a few days, and repeat. My husband was really into swimming that year, but there was no way I could join him ... I had no idea when I was going to start, or how heavily. It could be a waterfall at times, and I was going through boxes of supplies.
I figured it was perimenopause and that I would just have to ride it out.
But after a year I grew frustrated and went to the Dr ... who rushed me into an ultrasound ... the results of which rushed me into a special obgyn specialist appointment (they squeezed me in on a day when they weren't really taking appointments ... December 23, 2014) ... where I found out that I had a large polyp they were very concerned about ... and in early January I was into surgery. I was hoping they would do the hysterectomy then, and they talked about it, but they didn't.
Turns out the polyp was benign but I have the pre-conditions for cancer and I'm being regularly monitored.
After I recovered from the surgery, my periods settled down to about 10 days. They start gradually in fits and starts, then flood for a few days, then taper off for goodness only knows how long. But that's better than it was.
And I've got a large cyst too ... I've had them since I was 17. I've got one on my left kidney too, so maybe I just grow cysts.

A couple interesting things ...
The more weight I lose, the less I go through the pre-menstrual food cravings etc.
And the last 3 months or so, I've lost weight right around my periods instead of gaining. Might be related to the point above ... or something else? I am hoping I'm nearing the end of it all soon.

I don't even know what regular periods versus irregular means. Like I have been dealing with so many medical issues and yet I keep being told I am mostly normal. But neither here nor there, my cycle in the last two years has ranged from as little 25 days to as many as 44 days in between, which never help me figure out what phase I am in, and I have never been lean. It would make it better to figure out what has to do with my cycle and what doesn't if it where clockwork like that.
Still an awesome thread!2 -

Yep. I can't count it to the hour, but I know it will likely pop up. Mine come about every 32 days.1 -
I've been losing 1 pound per week up until recently, but I'm on a maintenance break for now...my last period was in March. I have a doctors apt scheduled, but I'm slightly freaked out. I've never gone so long without....aside from pregnancies, breastfeeding, etc.1

I've noticed many women have them between 28 and 30 days. Am I the outlier with a 25 day cycle?0 -

mine is always somewhere between 25 and 31 days. never 24 or less, or 32 or more.1 -

That's really amazing! Mine has gotten fairly predictable within a day or two, but until I had kids my periods was all over the place. I would range between 30 and 45 days.

It used to be every 28 days for me. Then there was that year where it was all the time. And now it's anywhere from 21 to about 27 days.

Yeah it would be hard to tell if yours are that irregular. Do you have PCOS or anything? The next time your period starts mark that as day 1 of your cycle. Start paying attention around day 13/14/15/16 to see if you can feel ovulation. I get a pain but obviously not everyone does. You can also look for a discharge and gauge your temper/mood (some people can get hormonal/cranky--I get batchit crazy). If you have a longer cycle you might not ovulate until much later.

For over 30 years, I was wildly irregular, but oddly, the closer I get to menopause (I'll be 50 this year), the more regular they get.1 -

I downloaded a period tracker app, which also tells you when you should be ovulating. Maybe pointless if she's irregular?

I'll take this opportunity to generically recommend the 2010 "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom" by Dr. Christiane Northrup, which is available in my library system so perhaps yours as well. I've found it very helpful with dealing with various female challenges over the years.
Also, the fertility section taught me how to successfully use fertility awareness for birth control.3 -

I have a tracker too. I mean they are close if you're regular but even so, not all women ovulate within that 14-16 day range. I'm regular and sometimes I'll feel myself ovulate late (mostly due to stress). If you're not regular yeah, the tracker won't help you much.1 -

You can also get a basal body thermometer and track your cycles that way. I believe it is the most accurate at-home way of pinpointing ovulation and cycle tracking.1 -
Ever since I got my husband fixed (bwahahaha!) I kind of stopped paying a lot of attention to my menstrual patterns as much. But, this is crazy, after my doctor started having my track my blood pressure, I can tell when I'm ovulating because my blood pressure will be crazy high for about 20 hours. It drove me crazy the first time I noticed it, because I'd been having normal readings for about a month, then suddenly 127/90, 132/78, etc, throughout the day. I was like, what the heck? I haven't had any salt, I haven't done anything different! Am I having some kind of stroke or something? The next day, normal bp.
Anyway, if you have blood pressure monitor at home, and have nothing better to do than track your BP three times a day, it might be a convenient way to track ovulation if you aren't regular enough for the tracker app.1 -

Thanks for that! I'm not looking for a "fertile window" ... I'm hoping my "fertile window" will close entirely very soon ... but because everything has gone so wonky, and my Dr and obgyn always ask me to describe my last 6 months, I thought it might be helpful to track things.3
