@Elise4270 How did you like the GU? I'm starting to look at foods while running with my plans to start taking my runs out to 1:30:000

I like the GU. I had it without water and it was fine. Just little bit at a time. I'd really planned on 7-8 miles, but my runs are so unpredictable. Think I'll just start carrying it in case I hit that 4-5 mile mark and feel up for more. I can eat Buffalo chicken wings and a red bull and run.
I went with GU because it's often the fuel provided at races and it's easy to find. I do like sport beans too!0 -

Thanks for the info. There's no place near here that sells running food, so it's all Online ordering, and there's no good way to get stuff in small amounts. I might just have to get a GU sample box from Amazon and try it out.0 -

I ordered mine online. I've only tried it at races. I wish they had an assorted pack too.0 -
@Elise4270 I found this on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/GU-Tour-Sample-Multi-Size/dp/B00ZPNVSDU0

@MNLittleFinn I recently ordered the sample GU multipack from amazon. It's not bad. My box had 6 different flavors in it. I've just started adding them to my 5+ mile runs, and it's made a HUGE difference. I don't feel wobbly and drunk at the end of my long runs. Now, I just feel tired.
I did get off my butt and knock out 2.5 miles to make up for yesterday's skipped run.0 -

Wow, thanks! I was looking on GU site.0 -
Re: fuel -- Personally, I can't stand the texture of GU. It's too thick for me. I prefer Honey Stinger gels and Power Bar gels. Both brands have decent sample packs on Amazon! As a Honey Stinger ambassador, I like to remind people that GU isn't the only option out there if you aren't crazy about the texture, flavors, etc.!1

I'm all about trying new stuff. I'll have to check the ingredients. Thanks!1 -
@kristinegift I'd only ever heard of GU, but I've now heard a couple people mention Honey Stinger Waffles. This may be my novice showing, but I always thought they were talking about a breakfast food. Can you explain more?
0 -
@MLS1582 The waffles are more like a biscuit or soft cookie, but it looks like a waffle! They're honey-based with various flavors (I'm quite partial to the chocolate, but I haven't come across a flavor I've disliked yet!). All their products are honey based (gels, chews, waffles; probably not the protein bars though) and organic, so they digest very well on the go.1
-
@kristinegift Thanks, I learn something new everyday! I'll have to check it out (I've switched most of my refined sugar out for nectar and honey, so I can see the appeal).0

I just saw we have a "like" and an "awesome" button! How cool - will be going back through posts to like and awesome shortly
Did my midweek longish run today. 15.3 kms @ 7:19 min/km; av HR 137, max HR 152. It was a bit hotter this morning because I went out a bit later, but humidity was down to 78%. I ran down to the beach and along the beach road for a few kms, like I usually do for my runs longer than 10 km. Didn't realise till I turned around that I had been running with a tail wind, and now of course, I had a head wind on the way back along the beach road, and then my regular 4 km incline on the way home. So, I slowed down a bit the last half, but not too bad. I was happy with my overall pace. Training is going well.

4/1 – scheduled rest day
4/2 – 13.31 easy
4/3 – 7.83 easy
4/4 – 4.59 easy 30 minutes + 4 strides
4/5 – 14.14 warm up + speed work
4/6 – 5.18 easy
4/7 – 11.45 – short warmup, long speed work
4/8 – scheduled rest day
4/9 – 7.30 speed work
4/10 – 11.67 easy
4/11 – 3.87 easy
4/12 – 7.78 warm up, speed work, cool down, commute
April total to date – 87.12
Nominal Challenge Goal – 200 miles
Real Goals: Taper well. Arrive at Hopkinton healthy. Run Boston well. Recover well.
Today's notes – Today was the last real speed work before Boston: 2 miles easy, 4 x 1000 m at T with 200 m recovery, 2 miles easy. Since the club meets at 6, and the local Fleet Feet was having a Boston Send Off event after their hill run at 6, I took the day off work and got started at 5. Got the workout done, heard the talk from the coach, got last minute training reminders, and ran about three quarters of a mile back to Fleet Feet for the party.
There were about 30 local runners in attendance who will be running Boston. Dave Coyne, a 45-time Boston runner, told us some stories about the early years. (1969 he sent a SASE to BAA, got back an entry form, filled it out, and sent it back with a check for $4.00. Then he was in. That was the last year runners didn't have to qualify.)
My two running buddies were in attendance, and Fast Jeff's wife wanted to get our pictures. I got her to put a picture of us on my phone as well:
From left to right, that's Fast Jeff, Young Jeff, and me. Fast Jeff has Chicago and New York on his bucket list, which is what got me interested in how you get into Chicago without having to go through the lottery. (Answer: You qualify with a marathon that beats 3:15 for men, 3:45 for women, with no differentiation by age.) I have a chance, but not a certainty, of qualifying for Chicago when I run Boston. I don't know if I even want to run Chicago, but the bragging rights for time qualifying are attractive.
It's a lot of miles to get to Boston. I've already run most of them. Now more of my focus will be on dealing with the logistics.

I am super excited about the awesome and like buttons! I am also envious of @_nikkiwolf_ 's new shoes.
I had a rough day. My son--who I thought was better--got sent home sick from school. Then, one of my best friends told me she was just diagnosed with cancer. I've been eating nothing but awful in between crying. It was nice to come on here and see some happy things. I love this thread for cheering me up. Running is also good for cheering up, but I didn't get to do too much of it today (see: had to go get sick kid at school).
4/1...5.0 @ 12:00 on the TM (4.0 @ 11:15 and 1.0 walking)
4/2....3.1 @ 11:45 through the neighborhood. My ankle hurt the first mile or so, especially on the uphill bits--downhill isn't too bad
4/3...Rest day
4/4...4.6 @ 11:32 on the rail trail and neighborhood streets
4/5...2.8 @ 11:50 on the TM--that's 2.3 (just to make it even!) @ 11:15 and .5 at a walk, plus strength training
4/6...Rest day, but I got to go help out at my son's RunFit club. Next time I'm wearing my own running shoes so I can chase him with a sharp stick so he doesn't walk so much! (That was a joke...don't call CPS or Jeff Galloway...)
4/7...7.0 @ 11:25 on the TM (This was really 6.25 at 11:05 and .75 walking to cool down)
4/8...2.0 @ 12:06 (just had a short time to run while the kids were at gym)
4/9...Unintended rest day. I got dressed to run...that counts for something, right? LOL
4/10...4.6 @ 13:39 with the slow poke pup. We ran about 3 miles in the 12:00 neighborhood and walked the rest. Well, I walked. He sniffed and did...doggy stuff.
4/11...3.0 @ 12:00 ish on the basement beheamoth. The kiddos were home sick from school so I was grounded, too.
4/12...2.25 @ 12:00 on the treadmill and strength training
Upcoming Races:
4/23 Healthy Steps Community 10K, Burke, VA
5/22 Run and Ride Kings Dominion 5K or 10K, Doswell, VA (maybe...depends on if I'm recovered from 5/13 surgery or not)
11/6 Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon, Orlando, FL

Fast Jeff, Young Jeff, and me.
@MobyCarp I think this is a universal way of tagging people in what ever event you / we are doing. In my local group we have Biker Steve ( $10,000.00 Carbon Fiber Tri-Bike & kit and a $5,000.00 Car ), Old Steve ( he's 18 ), Young Steve ( he's 55 ) and Steve.2 -
Thought I would do a quick check in and post my miles but I am 130+++ posts behind and it is already after 11pm. I am going to bed and will check in and post in the morning! This thread has gotten crazy busy!!0

Actually, it's just a way to describe them on semi-anonymous message boards without using their surnames. They're both named Jeff, so I need to distinguish them. Fast Jeff is 5 years younger than me, and faster than Young Jeff who is 10 years younger than me. But we're all close enough to the same speed to do our long runs together.0 -

Today was my first Wednesday run, sandwiched between my normal Tuesday and Thursday runs. It was a good run, kept my HR in the zone I wanted, but my right arch started to ache a little during the run. Shoes were ones I've only worn for like 8 miles, could that be the cause?3 -
@MNLittleFinn - Yes, that could be the shoes. You can tell for sure by rotating through different shoes and seeing if the arch ache happens with one pair but not with another. With enough running experience, you'll be able to tell just by how the shoe feels different from what you're used to.0
-
The route I took today went a tiny bit longer than the planned 8 miles, but that's fine by me because my planned 14 mile long run last weekend at the half marathon was only 13.13 miles. Granted, I recorded that on my list below as 13.1 miles, so considering I ran 8.28 miles today I will record it as 8.3 miles to make up the difference.
4/1 - Rest
4/2 - 14 miles

@WhatMeRunning - wow, so you did the 3am alarm!
@mobycarb - great picture! In my biking group we have an "Alabama Jeff", "Irish Jeff" and Jeff.
I've got a group bike ride planned after work. Afraid it will rain. If it does, then I will just run. Although I suppose I should be planning a rest day at some point.0
