@PoppetsMaster that muddy trail picture is awesome!! Looks like miserable fun! It makes me really want to find an ultra to sign up for. What water pack are you using? I need to find one that would fit a tall guy (I'm 6' 5")Another component of my training plan that I neglected was the fatigued long run. My plan had me running a shorter run, say 7 or 8 miles one day, then my long run the following day so my legs would be fatigued at the start. This would allow my body to adapt to the pounding of a 26 mile run without having to actually run 26 miles. Since I preferred to take Friday off and do my long runs on Saturday, I missed this key development.
I just got my training plan from my brother for the 100 miler in October... I'm looking at the scheduled back-to-backs as I am typing this... and he has rocks in his head.. lol... in July I see a 6 and 25, 6 and 20 and 10 and 12... which is manageable, but in August and September he has us doing 13 and 20, 10 and 25, 12 and 25, 16 and 31, 10 and 20 in consecutive weeks.
This will certainly get you ready for a distance race, but it's a huge time commitment and is not conducive to a happy relationship or family time. Unless you are married to ultrarunner who doesn't want kids. Then you are golden.

Tomorrow is supposed to be 30-45m of cross training...I'm really feeling no motivation for it. Don't have a bike right now, and no pool near by. Thinking about doing some HIIT cardio or ab killer for the time, but just not feeling it.....cut back weeks stink....but are so necessary.0

I am voting for @7lenny7 as the bad-*kitten* runner of the week. He did something that required a great deal of focus, determination and grit, to say nothing of substantial discomfort and physical distress. Yeah, his quads got sore, yeah, his achilles was nagging... mere child's play. But he somehow managed to do something I would never be able to do... he passed on the bathroom line and pinched it and held it and ran with it for FOUR DAMN HOURS!! I bow in total awe in the face of that toughness....10

Over the winter I met an ultra trail runner who's goal is to always be in ultramarathon condition. When I met him he was coming off an injury so he was *just* doing 20/20 on Sat/Sun, but he says he normally does 30/30 EVERY weekend.
Time...that's the one thing that keeps me on a leash. If i do anything more than a half the rest of this year I'll ahve to keep it on the down low or my wife will freak. She agreed to my time training for this past race because of my reasoning that training is before our busy summer and fall. I have to (and want to) be fair to my family and make sure I'm spending the right amount of time with them.
I think I can maintain a fitness level for running HM's at any time, but will need to be careful about scheduling anything longer.
That said, there's a 50K on July 2nd with an 8 hour time limit. I'm tempted to just to sign up and see what happens. For some reason I feel much more willing to take it easy on a trail race than I do on a road race.

Newbie here! Just found this and would like to join. I suck at running...but have always wanted to like it. I've tried in the past and there was about 2 weeks where I actually didn't hate it, and then I hurt my hip. Since we're half way through with May and I'm starting late I'm going to set a goal of 10 miles.

@Sunshine41784, welcome!! please don't be discouraged by our potty talk. We're a fun-loving, supportive group here. We all sucked at running at one point so you'll fit right in. Just take it slow and gradual! (And remember to hit the can before you go out the door)

I'm so lazy. My cross training is nonexistent. I usually call yard work cross training. It does involve hauling trees and such though. I'm too cheap to pay for a Y membership. I may reconsider after the remodel though.
Anything you do is better than holding the couch down.

Bikes? Pools? They actually have that stuff up where you live in BFE, Minnesota? I thought up there cross-training was stuff like roping elks, chunking ice, dodging bears and chopping down trees with hatchets.7 -

OMG this happened today and I have no ideea why or how
Everything just clicked today. I've been watching my cadence in the last months and managed to get from 160 to 170 on Sunday. But today I started running and I could trust my watch. I was there. 180. It didn't even feel hard like it did a few weeks ago. My heart rate was normal for the most part but nothing off the scale. And legs are feeling so fine. It could be those strides I made on Sunday, I noticed I reached 200 cadence there but damn it felt so easy today to keep it up.
Oh and I noticed I didn't put strides mileage into account. Did 6 today and managed to do almost a mile (1400m). I should add this to mileage right?

June 24 is 12 days after surgery - doubt I could make that, unless I bail on the sx. Edit duh, no. Surgery is July 12. I'm OK 6/24
I'm working 9/24, least until changes are made. But it looks like the rest I'll be available. But, if you and Pat can run together, I have no doubt that'll be a blast.
And honestly post surgery, I have no idea how much time it'll take to get back to running. But, I'm down for trails. My husband ain't so keen on 'em. But I'm working on him. @ceciliaslater may be interested too. And @greenolivetree ? It'd would surely be a MF Party!0 -
A god damn it I just couldn't stay put and messed with the a callus on my foot now it hurts when I walk. I hope a bandaid will do0

I managed to stay in pretty much perpetual shape to run a half in 2015, and ran 5 of them plus a full marathon. That was the year I came to understand the repeat marathon runners' attitude towards half marathons; they're races, you schedule them, but there isn't much of a taper or recovery period for a half when your major focus is a full marathon.
One thing I noticed was, stretching the long runs out to 16 miles or so really helped me be prepared for a half. After I'd done that, one long run a week of 10+ miles was sufficient to keep me in shape for the half distance.
Still working on figuring out how to stay in shape or at least manage the training cycle for the full marathon distance. It might take me a couple more full marathons to get to where I think I understand that.

Felt much less dead after the rest day yesterday and ran 11 miles with a few friends mid-day today. Love being back up north as too much running in Florida heat/humidity just saps me too much, even when I slow down.

@_nikkiwolf_ - I'm not a big fan of back to back races, but I think I tie up too much of my ego/identity in my race times to be comfortable racing at any less than 100%.3 -
@WhatMeRunning - You're getting into my old stomping grounds with that Pony Express Half. I grew up (and my parents still live) about 45 minutes from St. Joe.
Unfortunately, I'm holding off on race registrations until after I meet with the surgeon next week (Tuesday). I don't think I'll be able to run again until after a surgery happens--I've just got too much inflammation and limited mobility in my ankle to have a truly normal gait. And with moving next month, I'll likely have to put off surgery until sometime in July, pushing my 8 week recovery window into September. And THEN, I have to start working my way back to being fit enough to really run again.
I'm still keeping up my cardio (spin classes, mostly) and weightlifting so that I don't turn into a total blob. I dread surgery recovery and not even being able to do that much...
The new house that we've contracted on is only 6 miles south of the Kansas border, so maybe some of those Kansas races you've been running will be doable for me next year!2 -
Got to get back into training for the half in July. Only running 7-10km a week at the moment.. a lot happening but there shouldn't be any excuses! I have a 10km fun run this Sunday.. and a 14km fun run in 2 weeks so better start getting serious!3

I just plotted out my longest planned run yet. This will be my Long Run for next week, after this week's cut back week. Assignment is a FFLR of 1h45-2h15, so I plotted this.

Nice thing is, if I get to the point where I'm too tired to keep running, at Mile 11, I can turn and just walk home, rather than finishing the last 1.2 miles. Goal is to do whole run in under the 135 minute time limit for the run.3 -

How bad is the camber on those roads? Whenever I spend a significant portion of the run along a road I get concerned about the camber screwing up my hips or knees due to the constant uneven pavement. I'll often run in the middle of the oncoming lane when it's safe to do so on those roads.0 -
@7lenny7 I really enjoyed your race report. I’m hoping to learn from some of your lessons before my first marathon next April. I’m glad your achilles pain seems to be subsiding.

@_nikkiwolf_ Personally, I wouldn’t try to really race 2x10kms in one weekend, as when I really push for a PB it takes everything I have. However, you could definitely run both just for the experience and race bling, and try for a PB at the first one?
@Virkati I’m glad I’m not the only one counting down to my favourite race, even though it’s nearly a year away! Should probably start counting down to my marathon instead...

Went for what should have been a recovery run today, but seeing as all of last week was at recovery pace and I have had the worst day you can imagine, I needed to do a hard workout and opted to run some hills near me that I've always shied away from. Felt quite proud that I managed one in particular that I've never done in one go before, and it definitely cured the stinker of a day I had
