One thing to keep in mind is that the elevation in Strava/others is not really all that accurate. But...it probably will be hilly if it shows a lot of elevation gain!
Training with hills is one of the best things you can do. What I would do is start mapping out hilly routes for your short and medium runs too. Then you could definitely tackle your longest run on a hilly route and be ready for anything. Hills are the best way to build up running power and speed. Well, I'm not positive about it being the BEST, but it's the best thing I do.1 -

This route is about 3x the elevation (according to strava when I mapped it) than my last long run. I crunched some numbers. and found out that to make the 135 minute time limit for the run, I'd have to average 11:50/mile for the run. My average, for my last 4 long runs (Mileage: 8.2,7, 8.4, 10) was 10:38. I'm also open to the run taking longer than the time limit from my plan, since the mileage would still be under 35% of that week's total. This would be next week, week 5/10 of the training plan I'm on.
The run itself looks like it's in a really nice area, on the Mesabi Trail, through the woods in northern, MN, and goes past Giant's Ridge ski resort, so I know I'll enjoy the views, and that's a big part of why I want to try it.
So, the question is, Do I tempt fate on a much more vertical run for my longest long run in the cycle?
That looks like an awesome route, @MNLittleFinn, I'd go for it!
I love making my long runs what I call "destination runs", if I have the time. I'll carefully choose a route which is interesting and scenic.
If there's any doubt about my ability to finish the run, particularly on the winter runs when walking while sweaty could be dangerous, rather than start at the end of an out & back, I'll start about 25% to 50% into it, run to the far end, come back past my truck to the other end, then back to my truck again. One particular advantage do doing this is that rather than carry everything I need for the full run, I can stop at my truck and reload on water & fuel. The lot at 1.3 or 1.7 would be ideal.2 -
I've also seen one of these. I would not want to run with this strapped to my face, but the concept is great. I could see this being beneficial for sure.

They make rather bold claims: "Training Mask will make your workout so efficient, you can actually cut the amount of time spent in training by as much as two-thirds. Simply strap it on and begin your normal work out. Within days, you'll see the difference!"
I've become ok with running in public with my form fitting running tights, my day-glo yellow shirts, and my pink GPS, but I don't think I could get to where I could run in public with that mask.

I've seen crazy folks with these.
@MNLittleFinn I'd do the hills! Where's @ROBOTFOOD he does some elevation.1 -
Thanks @WhatMeRunning , @7lenny7 and @Elise4270 ! think I'm going to go for it.
@WhatMeRunning all my runs have hills, This one just has a heck of a lot more, being in the hill country. I feel pretty ready for it, I think.....
@7lenny7 The lot at 1.3 was where i was originally thinking of starting my route, but wanted to get to 11 miles. I really like the idea of starting there though, so if I want to cut it short, I can, but I can always loop around to get the full mileage.0 -

Well, at least we know that "piss" and "tits" are acceptable. By the way, when you quote the post, it's definitely not censored. You did, in fact, post all seven of George Carlin's Seven Dirty Words.
LOL - yes you know we all have to try it now.0 -

OK so maybe I'm not as productive as I should be at work. But, GF options for pasta. If you live in a larger area you may already know about these. I'm just learning. Even if your not GF- they have protein!1 -

behind logging again. It was actually more then a mile but I am only logging the full miles. Dropped the car off for an oil change and Neeko and I ran home from the garage.
I have my 5k tomorrow at work and I am actually a little nervous. I haven't been in a race environment since December and I hate crowds. I am treating it like a training session and doing intervals depending on the weather since it is at noon and last year I had a serious issue with the heat. Oh well, it is just for fun... I think.
4 -
Another 5k. It was kinda bad since it was so much hotter that yesterday so even though heart rate was the same, pace was slower and it felt harder to run in so much heat. I need to try this "get up before the sun" thing.
Also a 5 year old ran into me with his tricycle. Since I'm pretty big he fell and started crying. His mother started screaming at me and I said sorry and ran away from the scene. Not my fault he decided to cross the jogging lane at maximum speed behind a bush. I'm sure he was ok though kids need to fall to develop an immunity to bigger falls
On the sad part my knee acted up today. Took some vitamin I (ibuprofen) and I guess tomorrow is rest day. Also I think I'll skip my long run on Sunday depending how I feel. I want to advance to 6 runs a week soon but we'll see

I just realized that that nasty hilly run I made has the nastiest hill right about the same distance in as my HM has the one big hill.....Good reason to do the run?2

Interesting concept. I'm skeptical for a couple of reasons.
1. I train with a club that has some pretty high level athletes. One of our members went to the Olympic marathon trials. Even though he didn't come close to making the US team, he trained like an Olympian. I've never heard of anyone using something like this.
2. The marketing claims make my BS meter go into the red and sound a siren: "Training Mask will make your workout so efficient, you can actually cut the amount of time spent in training by as much as two-thirds. Simply strap it on and begin your normal work out. Within days, you'll see the difference!"
The claim that you'll see a difference in days is not unusual, but the claim that you can cut your training time is a huge red flag. That's an argument used to market stuff to people who don't really want to exercise. If they were marketing to people who really want to train, the claim would be that it makes your limited time available for training more efficient.

I honestly think I first heard about those masks from something on Runner's World, but don't have a link. I did find this which tries to get to any sort of truth behind any so-called benefits of using suck a mask though. Looks like a mixed bag of results, with some upside, but it is definitely misleading to say you get altitude training from it since the adaptations being made are in your diaphragm strength simply making you able to breathe harder, as opposed to your lungs ability to deliver oxygen to your blood (two different things).

LOL I suppose it's not a hit and run if the victim is the one running away.
I had a kid last week watching me coming down the street and when I got up to his house he started racing me. I always have funny encounters with kids on this one particular street

It's pouring now so won't get a bike ride in but I might run if it stops lightening.
In other news... A lot of mornings my husband takes a picture of our daughter’s dog and then later in the day texts it to her and I in a group text with a funny message. She lives in NYC and misses her dog (and us, I presume). Yesterday she replies “why is mom topless in that picture?” I was like …. WHAT?!
I look…. sure enough... the dog was front and center but there in the background is me … getting ready without anything on top. I texted back: EVERYONE MUST DELETE THAT PICTURE IMMEDIATELY!!! My husband replies “oh shoot, I submitted that earlier to dogoftheday.com”. I told my friends at work and they all said "LET ME SEE!" Um, NO!
And I was such a good mom, warning my kids about sexting ... now there is me in a picture out in the cloud.9 -
@ddmom0811 - oh my! LOL.
Hi everyone, Joining in here for the first time. I started running in September having never run before. I joined a Walk to Run group at my YMCA and have been loving it. So far I've run three 5K races and just this past weekend did an 8k. I finished in 56:16, which I was fairly pleased with, but was hoping to have improved speed a bit. My running buddies were a at about 51 minutes - need to catch them
I don't think I'm really a speed runner but I think I have a pretty consistent pace and can build endurance. I've never been in shape before and I'm so excited to try to push myself a little and see what I can do. I've lost almost 50 lbs. this past year and feel so much better mentally and physically.
My current goals are to beat my previous highest monthly total of 62 miles run, and get up to about 20 miles/week.
Right now I'm well on my way with 45 miles for May so far. This week I've done about 9 miles so far. I'm planning to run a 10K in July and start training for a half marathon.
Upcoming races:
6/4: Butterfly Run - 5K (fun run team thing, will not be a race pace)
6/7: JP Morgan Corporate Challenge - 3.5 miles
7/30: Save the River 10K (tentative)
8/20: Sarcoma Foundation 5k
9/18: Fall Classic 5k (Boston, tentative but I'll be in Boston that weekend so hoping)
October - half marathon - maybe Niagara Falls International?6 -

Although I have to admit, I found my personal limit today! I wanted to try out a new trail, one that heads straight up the mountains, rather than the road winding up back and forth in gentler slopes. It turned out to be too steep for me After it became clear hat I would have to talk the entire thing, I turned around and returned to running up the road instead, until I got to the forest trail that would lead me back down...
Looking back, the "evil" bit that forced me to walk had an average slope of 22%. Which actually sounds pretty impressive to me, so now I don't feel so bad about walking anymore. Still, I guess that means I'm not quite ready for the fun race that @WhatMeRunning linked ^^
By the way, if you want to see the course map for a really scary trail run, take a look at the Ultra Trail Mont Blanc or one of the associated races, the PTL - like, seriously? There's trail running, and there is plain madness, and I know in which category that one falls!1 -
