Maybe the town officials didn't agree with the original course that was submitted, or maybe after they got an official certification, they had to enhance it for whatever reason. I'm purely guessing.
Yeah, I know the route has been changed a few times over the years. Problem for me is that I did a little tailoring to my training to account for the course as it was (not too much though) So I want to see what it's like now to see if I need to change anything. Probably not, but who knows. I'll be interested to see what it looks like now.0 -

It would be difficult to do #4, if you forgot #2.
(Although @7lenny7 actually ran far and he forgot #2 ).4 -
Does mfp actually censor you that way? I thought people purposely wrote that in. let me try... *kitten*
The cool thing is you can quote people to find out what they really said. It doesn't show up in what you post, but you can see it in the editor. Like here I can see you just said *kitten*.
Oh you really said *kitten*. Damn they need to censor the quotes now we can't all say *kitten* every time and get a way with it

If the leg does start feeling totally normal by evening, maybe I'll go run some on a track. More likely, today will be a rest day. I'd rather come back permanently than come back too quickly and set myself back.
For now, I'm content with the result. It's not a triumphant return, but it is progress.
This is why I think @MobyCarp might actually be the most bad-*kitten* runner... he and I are essentially the same age and both picked up running "late in life" but we are on opposite ends of the running spectrum. Where I am a slow, grinding trail runner, @MobyCarp is an amazingly fast road runner. I am a simple, "put-one-foot-in-front-of- the-other" runner with a limited base of experiential knowledge, Moby is a very intelligent, sophisticated runner using the best scientific knowledge available to shave seconds off his times.
I freely admit that it is hard for me to understand his style of running (along with @Ohhim, @Stoshew71, @7lenny7, @WhatMeRunning), but it is what he wrote in the quoted section above that makes me admire and respect him as a fellow runner, and why I think he might be toughest runner here. It is so incredibly difficult to sit back and work through an injury. Most of us lack the patience and discipline to do it right, but not only is he doing it (and I can't imagine how crazy he must be going), but he is still here documenting it, logging it, owning it. As runners, we tend to have sensitive, competitive egos. We want to explain why our miles dropped off, why our speeds look slow, why a race didn't turn out as well as we expected... we want to rush through injuries to get to our monthly goals. It is tough to sit on the sidelines. And I have seen several runners here who would put up big miles and when they hit an injury or other set-back, they couldn't cope with it and bailed.
But not @MobyCarp... he is here everyday... letting us know what is going on with him, good, bad and ugly... but always positive, focused and exceedingly disciplined. And still taking time to offer wise advice and encouragement to all of us. I am really glad he is here.
A little motivational tip: When I know what I need to do, but it's easy to talk myself out of it, I find it very helpful to write something about it. Since I'm not very good at writing just for myself, that usually translates to writing on a public or semi-public message board. With respect to running, this one has the best audience for the types of things I need to write to remind myself to do what I need to do.
Conversation with someone who understands helps as well, but sometimes it's hard to find that expertise face to face. It's more challenging if I need to *not* be out there running with other runners. Talking to other runners at the club helps. Talking to the coach helps. And talking to the PT helps:
Me: I'm a runner. I only have 2 modes for dealing with injury.
PT: Anger, and . . . ?
Me: Denial and hypochondria.
PT: {chuckle}
So anyway, that's why I'm here with the good, the bad, and the ugly. It's to help myself. If it happens to help someone else, that's a bonus.5 -
I wonder if there is a limit to the number of *kittens* that can be posted in a single thread in an hour before the alarms go off at the MFP mod headquarters?1
-
And what if I say kittenass? Or kitten-*kitten*?
Gah! I need to get a life.2 -
I really should get some work done... lol2

@kristinegift already did a pretty good job talking me out of running the full this year. I'll plan on running a full next year, and plan my racing season around that. Get 2 halfs under my belt this year, see how I feel after them, and take it from there.
My only real concession will be that I'm thinking I'll just keep making my long runs longer this year, with a nominal goal of getting out to like 15-16 miles on my long runs so that when the winter hits, I'll be in good shape to do a smallish cutback to account for weather, and keep in shape for a full next year in the spring.
That make sense? So many things do, in my head, but not to other people.
I had to read this far to see where you were. As of now, you've settled on a sensible plan. Stretching the long runs to 16 miles won't hurt you for a half, and will probably help. But a full marathon is a different animal. Taking more time to get there, and developing your ability to run longer distances more gradually, is likely to make your first marathon a better experience.
When I was training for my first half, the experienced marathon runners told me the game changes between a half and a full marathon. I had already noticed that the game changed between a 10K and a half, and said so. They told me the game changed again between a half and a full, and I was inclined to believe them. Having run two full marathons now, I see that they were right. It's a bigger difference than I appreciated even after my first full marathon.
A full marathon beats you up a lot more than a half does. It takes longer to build up enough of a base so that you can tolerate how much 26.2 miles beats on you. Maybe it's easier if you can run those 26.2 miles easy, but . . . it's really, really hard to run easy in a race environment.
The other thing that you really need to experience first hand is pacing yourself for a race that's too long to run at lactic threshold. My first experience with needing to pace myself that way was a 15K a month before my first half. I felt like a failure in the last 3 miles, because I was slowing way down and I was whipped. (Part of that was the distance, and part was the course.)
So it turns out that pacing myself for a half is tricky. The only halfs I've run close to even splits have been halfs where I was deliberately running slower than I could for injury recovery or marathon recovery; and that last one, I didn't run slow enough. (Probably shouldn't have run it at all, but that's hindsight.) Every half I've tried to complete fast, I've had to slow down late. It's very different than long slow training runs.
A marathon is like that, only even more so. Train to 20 miles, and after mile 20 or 22 of the marathon you hurt. You can run the race, but the last few miles might not be pretty. Or maybe you can run the last few miles in good shape if you run the first 20 miles slow enough; but the issues of determining how slow is slow enough and getting yourself to run that slow are not trivial.
If you were an established half marathon runner with the experience of running and recovering from a few half marathons, planning on that fall marathon might make sense. For someone who has yet to complete his first half marathon, it's pretty aggressive. Aggressive has a high risk of injury. Injury is no fun at all. Running two halfs this year and then planning on a marathon next year sounds like a much better plan.
Bottom line is, my advice is not to plan on a full marathon at all this year, and not to set even a tentative date until after you've been through the cycle of running and recovering from a half to the point where you're pretty sure you could run another half as a race. We train as well as we know how, but there is no substitute for an actual race experience to learn what racing a long distance is like.8 -
@MobyCarp thanks for that detailed explanation! Longer is always my goal, but since I'm still new I'm trying me to find some perspective. You gave it to me in a great way.1

Perfect running weather this afternoon, and my usual running trail/park smelled like spring after a nice morning rainfall, so I ended up knocking out 10 more miles mid-day. My primary northern running partner is on the DL for a week or so, but I definitely enjoyed the woods and solitude of the run. Finally crossed the mid-point of my monthly mileage goal, but no concerns that I'll knock out the remaining 87 miles in the 13 days left, as most are up north.

I'll take a look at those fulls too. I kind of want to try one this year.....but maybe I should wait.....ugh...Too much motivation, not enough common sense......Reason I'm looking at TC is i have family within a 45 minute drive of the starting point. I also just Emailed to see if there's a way to switch my second half to a full....Then I wouldn't have to recover or any of that, just use my Training for my July half as part of training for my full.
@mnlittlefinn - What you are describing is how I ended up doing my first full marathon. At the time I raced it, I had been running for about 18 months it was roughly a year after my first 10 miler. Like you, I had signed up for just the half, and swapped to a full registration right after I had comfortably raced a half marathon 12 weeks prior. I had initially just worked through the hal higdon novice 2 half marathon plan, then just swapped into his full marathon novice 1 plan mid-way and it worked out pretty well.
Still, the training definitely puts a toll on your body, but I enjoyed the challenge, did the race as a fundraiser (for a friend who had lived around mile 20 and passed away a few months prior), had a buddy pace me for the race, and despite it taking about 50% more time than that same course took me this year, it was definitely a great experience.
If I were in your shoes, I'd just gauge your half, see how it feels, then do the swap if you come out of it wanting more and feeling up for the distance/challenge. If you finish the half hating life, then no reason to commit to both the race itself, and the requisite half dozen 16-20 mile training runs.1 -
