I'm thinking about swapping next week with the following week,so I have my cutback after my 10k Race in a week. Also, Next week I'm off, and the following week I Start teaching summer school, so if I swapped, I'd have my longer runs while I'm off, and shorter runs for the first week of summer school. How does that sound?
@MNLittleFinn If you're going to race that 10k, I'd the cutback the week before the race, as planned. Then you'll be fresher for the 10k!1 -
@MichPainter 50 miles of walk/run intervals sounds great
It's raining. Still planning to run. Right now I'm fighting off a nap.2 -
Yes, it's very small and immature to like this, and tho I know that my schedule is off from most of these folks (they'll catch up, TRUST me!), it still tickles me to see my name above the SERIOUS RUNNERS on this....1 -
PoppetsMaster wrote: »WhatMeRunning wrote: »How long before the 5k at 7pm tonight is it still OK to drink an IPA?
I would have already started. It's only 3 miles.
ETA: Wait... you said "an" IPA? As in singular? Geez... maybe I got you wrong...2 -
Back in the northeast and out of the ugly humidity (although it was a much less humid and dare I say comfortable 80 degrees out), so I ended up joining a friend for her long run this afternoon through a local (relatively shaded) park. Still, I made the mistake of running to her house first, then back after, turning her 12 mile run into 13.65 miles for me. I'll probably cut back tomorrow, but do my usual Sunday AM long run with friends.
6/1 - 4 miles
6/2 - 8 miles
6/3 - 13.5 miles
Total: 25.5 miles
Goal: 200 miles
Remaining: 174.5 miles
Upcoming Races:
Ironman 70.3 Augusta - Sep
Chicago Marathon - Oct
Ironman Florida - Nov
@ddmom0811 - Enjoy victoria/portland/alberta! Was lucky enough to live in Victoria for a year, and loved the pacific northwest. Climates should be a bit more mild along the pacific coast (at least in Portland & Vic), and running in each city should be a great way to explore each!
@9voice9 - just added you (and a few other folks) on garmin connect. It sometimes takes a day or two to clean up any biking mileage (as I occasionally record it with my forerunner 225 and it is classified as a run by default), but happy to provide some motivation Given I split time between the northeast and Florida, I'll either be near the top or the bottom of your list depending on if I'm taking advantage of the cooler weather or not.2 -

Cutback and reverse taper from my Monday race this week. I even took a complete rest day this morning cause I needed it. I have a long run in the morning to close the week out then hopefully to my usual insane mileage next week.

I haven't had time to get caught up but I saw this from a friend (a runner who was diagnosed with Lymes) and wanted to share it as a reminder to all of you trail runners. The article is a couple of years old but is still relevant.

I just got tested for Lyme today! Hopefully have results by next week... It's hard to explain to people who don't lift or run when your soreness and aches are way worse than they should be. "Well of course you're tired, that would make anyone tired!" well no, not exactly....
I have taken lots of time off, even gained some weight back thinking maybe it was something training related. Hopefully have some answers soon.3 -
My Garmin died. First time. I've had it 6 months. So I'm now charging and running about 6:30 or 7. I'm also currently buzzed with a high heart rate due to albuterol. Hopefully this feeling passes before my run.3
-
I don't have a mile goal. I just want to do a run/jog internal training program I have every other day- so 15 times this month.5
-
6/1 2 miles
6/2 Rest
6/3 3.5 miles
34.5 miles left for the month
(I think I made my goal a little short of my expectations)3 -

Hypothetical question. You go to the doctor for a routine infusion of some medication. They monitor your vitals and you have a low grade fever and really low blood pressure. But you feel fine. You were really looking forward to a short and easy evening run after work. But it is pretty hot outside. Do you still do the run or error on the side of caution and skip it? I am asking for a friend
Hypothetical question back at you: Does this doctor have a history on your friend, specifically? And does the doctor know your friend is a serious runner?
My normal, healthy temperature runs a bit below the standard 98.6. When my temperature is at 98.6, I can feel a low grade fever. I presume that the standard is an average and there are people whose normal, healthy temperatures run a bit above. Does your friend know where his/her normal, healthy temperature hangs out?
Of course, we all know that serious distance runners tend to have low blood pressure and low resting heart rate. Every time I go in to donate blood, they ask if I exercise. One time, the nurse said, "Are you a runner or a swimmer?" As in, with that heart rate I had to be one or the other.
Anyway, if it's a real fever, running is risky. If it's simply a normal temperature higher than the standard, no big deal.0 -

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS! Even if I have only run 13.1 (at a single "sitting") once. "Today is NOT that day."
Dayum. Making me wanna go out for a couple miles tonight (since it's not hellish now). But I guess I'll save that motivation for tomorrow. Think I'm gonna get up close to my regular 4:30 so I can have some mostly-dark miles tomorrow morning....3 -

Almost an hour of pilates this afternoon then 10k run this evening. I left about 6:45 and it was still 75 with 80% humidity so plenty of sweat involved. Also chose a hilly route. Average pace was 9:48. My best 10k pace in cool weather was 9:16 so not bad. Average HR 177 of course. So far with cloudy days I've not had any real stress in the heat. None of the dizzy spells, chills, etc. I hope I can keep tolerating it as it gets hotter.4

It's supposed to be really hot this weekend in the PNW. Very different than usual! I would have done a 5k tomorrow in my town but we are going to the ZOO, so I won't be getting any miles in tomorrow. And it's supposed to be blazing hot also. Yay for 103* at the Zoo. lol. Lots of steps, but no running. Still keeping up with my pace around 11 mins. I ran my mile tonight at 11:11. Slowly but surely, I will get faster!
6/1: 2 miles
6/2: Rest
6/3: 1 mile.
Upcoming Races:
6/25: The DIRTY DASH!

6.1 miles in the rain, along the Mississippi River, at midnight. The gentle rain, the whistle of the trains, the glow of the lights across the river, the steady strobe of the lighthouse and even a little fox running across my path. Yeah, this run kicked *kitten*!
Tomorrow (later today actually) I'll be spending a few hours working on the boat, then a stop to run the trails on the way home.4 -
@skippygirlsmom and @louubelle16 thanks for sharing those stories. Hopefully my situation isn't so serious! I get that she's getting on my case out of love but I get a sense that she and my wife are conspiring and are unwilling to listen to what I'm saying. I'm the healthiest person in the house!

Race information
What? Race for the Cure
When? June 4, 2016
How far? 5k
Goals
Goal Description.....Completed?
A......21:40.............No
B......Under 22:00...Yes
C......Under 22:05...Yes
Training
So this comes after 2 months of no speed work and all base-building. Wanted to see if I lost anything.
Race strategy
Negative splits. Oh yea baby I was so gonna do this and I was so ready. Splits were supposed to be 4:30/4:25:/4:20/4:15/4:10. Nothing fancy just a little faster each km. Checked the weather and
Revised strategy was "we'll see"
Actual strategy was "hold for dear life"
Pre-Race
So I made my warm-up, ran 2k, did some drills, and some strides to tune in to the speed of the race and went for start. I don't know how people act in other countries but here everybody wanted to be first in line (this wasn't even a timed race). Now I wanted to be first in line cause I knew I was fast enough for that. So I made my last stand against this lady that kept hitting me with her backpack and wouldn't let anyone steal her place. Anyway 3..2..1.Go
Kilometers [0] to [2]
A lot of people went fast past me luckily I had a clear vector near them and had to tune into my pace. Worked a lot on cadence and form these slow months (had to work on something). First km goes by fast, 4:27. Almost on point. People that went past me got burned out at this point. Most of them. Second one goes a little too fast 4:17 and I wonder why. It didn't feel like I speed up. I realized why soon
Kilometers [2] to [4]
2 and 3 were downhill. This explains it. Guess it ain't so bad. At this moment I am in what I call the "5k wasteland". In these casual races it happens when you race a 22-20 min 5k. Looked behind me and there was no one for at least 400 meters. There were 3 people in front of me and this little kid. This kid had me in his sights. We'll his back-sights at least. He ran in front almost all the race. As soon as I almost caught up with him he speed up. He really didn't want me to pass him. He was like 10. Kid is going places if he trains. Anyway at around 3 km we hit the turn
I look forward.. and noticed this hill that ended up for 2 km. It was constant climb. Not big but just enough so you feel it hard. First thing to go was cadence. That goes away when I'm tired. It still held up to 170+ so all that training worked well I'd say. I still need to work a lot on form while fatigued once I add speed work. The 3 people and the kid before started to feel it hard. 2 of them dropped behind. Kid and one guy in front of me. The pack of 3, alone in the wasteland. Kid started to struggle but the hill just wouldn't let me pass him. I didn't look at my watch around this time but I was at around 4:50 at some point. Feet were heavy, arms were spaghetti. Longest 2k ever. Finally we reach the park again (which contained another 300 m of hill). To my surprise splits were 4:26 and 4:29. Not bad I guess. There is still hope
Kilometers [4] to [5]
Tragedy happens. Kid slows down I pull up near him. He breathes hard. Really hard. Ask him if he is ok and he just stops. Kid gave everything on that hill to stay in front of me. He burnt out. Only me and one guy remain. No one in front, no one behind. Last stretch and people start to cheer. Ok arms is time to do what you were born to do. Swing got damn it. Swing. Watch indicates 21:00 and only 400 meters to go. Swing swing swing. Head feels like blowing up. Sweat doesn't evaporate. Too humid. Guy in front of me can't sprint so I take him. I can't really recall much except I paused my watch at the finish line and someone threw a medal on me. Last split 4:17
Post-race
Fells like I'm blow up so I start running. Need to cool-down fast so I threw a water bottle on my head. Well the water, not the bottle. I swear I heard steam escaping. Kept running a little. Heart hit 195 during that last stretch. Remember to check time. 21:57. "Great" success. I still kept my time during these times with the injury and no speed work. Remember about the kid but couldn't find him. Hope he finished in the end. He had a great time but tried to race me when he should have raced himself.
For me, 5ks are harder than longer events. They start fast and they end fast and the pain seems to last forever. Every time I attempt to break my PR it's like the 5k takes a little of my soul in return. People underestimate the 5k a lot. It feels like a short race but is long enough that it drains you if you start too fast. Inexperienced people have poor notion of how long a km feels and they probably think it will go fast and they will finish until they get tired.
In the end everything went fine. Next race I run I run it slow so I can run with normal people and cheer on them. Kinda hate to see 5-10 people in a race with more than 400.
Also overheard drivers getting upset that we blocked their roads. I make a smug face every time I hear that

Notes on Today's run: 12.25 miles at an average of 10:06
I pushed it way too hard today. I chopped 2 seconds off my average pace from last week, and this was not a FFLR, just a regular LR. Which begs the question, can a LR also be a tempo run? My average HR was in the Tempo range (average HR 166). Mile 1 was 10:18, and after that, my slowest mile was 10:10 mile 4, and that's the mile that gives me a 104 foot elevation gain over 0.3 miles, a decent practice for the 1.5 mile 115 foot gain hill in the HM I'm running, and at just about the same distance in.
I know I pushed too hard, and the data bears that out. However, I will say that I am happy to see that I can maintain a fast (for me) pace over the course of 12.25 miles without feeling totally dead afterward. Once again, I could have gone the next 0.85 miles to get 13.1, but my self imposed limit for training is to keep it under HM distance.
Just under an hour later now, I feel surprisingly good. Not ready to run again, but like I could do another short run later today, if I needed to....that need will NOT arise.
All in all, things are looking good for me to meet my goals for my HM that's....just realized....exactly a month away!5 -
6.5 miles alongside the Atlantic Ocean this morning. Will have to update my ticker Sunday night. Hot and sunny ... as it should be!6
-
I am not sure If this is the right place but I am a new runner having taught myself since January on C25K and I ran my first event on May 28 at the 5K Ottawa Race Weekend!!! It was blazing hot and run was at 4pm (38C with the humidity) but in my age category I placed 47/120 women (age 60-64) and was ecstatic with that. I was pretty sick with heat stroke after but I am ok now. I did all the things I was supposed to but we didn't have much time between sub zero and 38c!! Lol maybe a month at best. I am going to run the army run in September as my next goal!! I wasn't supposed to run this week...just recover so this upcoming one I am going to get back st it!! Happy running everyone!!!!!!11
-
@AdrianChr92 - Love the race report. Yeah, it feels different running near the front of a small race, when you know there would be lots of people in front of you in a big race. Do I understand this, you won a 5K outright with a time of 21:57?3

@MobyCarp Oh no. People that won them are under 18 min. I'm in the wasteland. Just far enough the top men so I can't see them and just fast enough from the rest of the runners so I can't see them. With that time in a "casual race" like this I usually come in top 30 or so. Best I got was 10th place.3
