June (2016) Running Challenge

Hi everyone! I am late to the game here, but I just got sucked into reading all 11 previous pages of posts in this challenge, and it looks like a very fun and motivating group! I'd love to join you all if it's not too late...
I am trying to get back into running after several years. I've never been much of a runner, but did track & field in high school, and I've always loved to be active & exercise . Anyway, inspired by a 60 year old runner friend I started jogging in maybe 2008 (?) & ran in a few 5K races a each year for a while. It was a blast! While I never ran fast or far, it was fun to work on improving my times & endurance. But then I was sidelined for a bit with some knee issues, had to do PT for months, and was just getting back into jogging when I got another knee injury. Bleah. Between the knee problems & having asthma I kinda figured that maybe running just isn't my sport, and have been doing other sports/ fitness activities instead. But I want to give running another try! I miss the fun of doing 5ks, and I have a 3 year old cattle dog-mix who is the world's best running partner and would LOVE if we made it a regular habit.
So here goes! I am going to try 20 miles of walk/ jogging (hopefully mostly jogging ) for the month of June. I've done a bit of walk/ jogging every day in June so far, but was keeping track of time rather than distance, so I honestly don't know how many miles (or bits of miles) I've done. So I'll start from right now with 0 done and 20 to go. Cheers!8 -
@cljoe7. Welcome!!!

Okay, 3 miles done. I set out to do 4. First 2 miles my legs were dead then my stomach got very unhappy. But 3 is better than none.
Carried my new water bottle to try out on a short run. Half mile in my right shoulder was cramping so I ended up switching hands constantly. Maybe I'll adjust to it and not feel so stiff.
We got up to 78 briefly and the sun brought the humidity down to 60% so I actually felt cooler than last night.
Welcome to the group @cljoe74 -

@AdrianChr92 and @WhatMeRunning and @katharmonic , loved your race reports!
@JaneKnoll1 and @cljoe7 Welcome! Lovely to have people join us who are getting into running.2 -
1 June – 10 km
3 June – 10 km
4 June – 5 km parkrun
5 June – 18 km – furthest distance yet
Goal: 150 km (93 miles)
Total: 43 km (26.7 miles)
Today I ran 18 km (11.2 miles)! My furthest distance yet!
Was aiming for 17 km, but was feeling fantastic so I kept going another km. Loved this run. Realised I should be going a bit easier half way through and slowed down, so maybe that's why I had more in me at the end.

@AdrianChr92 and @WhatMeRunning and @katharmonic, great race reports and congrats on the great runs!
@Orphia, congrats on the distance PR! Looks like you had a beautiful run. Any running shoes in that tree?
After last nights midnight run I spent the night in the boat, did some work on it this morning, and then headed back. The rain hit just as I got him my truck and was coming down hard. I planned a trail run on the way back and was excited about the prospect of running it in the rain.
It let up as I got to the trail head and the sun came out. 3 miles in, it came back, hard, and this time it carried a lot of lightning. I love running in the rain but lightning...not so much, particularly when I was running a ridge line to get back to my truck. A wrong turn made the 3 miles back turn into 3.5, for a total of 6.5.
The trail was divine! It was either very sandy or very muddy for 3/4th of the run. My trail shoes, socks and legs were superbly dirty at the end!!
Between the run the night before, not near enough sleep, the tough running of the mud and sand, and then the lightning, I cut a planned 10 miler. That makes 19 miles in less than 48 hours, with NO Achilles pain or swelling, so I'm declaring myself healed, and I'm also taking a rest day tomorrow which will make my wife happy since it's my son's graduation.
06/01 rest
06/02 6.5
06/03 6.1
06/04 6.5
Total - 19.1/100

I keep saying I don't normally run two days in a row or twice in one day but it does seem to becoming the norm at the moment! Both my daughters have taken up running and working through a C25K program which they want support from me. I have a 10km race later this month and a HM hence I need longer runs too! The overall distance each day is what I am aiming for so not too bad really.
On the plus side my daughters are enjoying running and entered their first 5km race at ages 25 and 22!
Up coming races:
Mersey Tunnel 10km 19th June
Race For Life 5km 26th June
Hospice Colour Run 5km 3rd July

Realized I am way behind logging my runs. Took care of that so now I can say I accomplished something at work today. Yesterdays run was good since it was a little cooler but still humid. I tried something different and set my watch for intervals of 5 minutes and 1 minute and it worked much better. I think I will use it for my 5K on 6/11 if it is hot or humid. I had a choice to make when I left the house, I could either take Neeko since it was cooler or my water bottle. I chose Neeko, bad decision. I called DH on our way out the door to see where he was and he was on his way home from working out. I told him were I was going and asked him to do a drive by if it started raining. He did it anyway without the rain and it was a good thing. Neeko had just almost yanked me off my feet to go after 2 squirrels chasing each other and I ended up sending him home with DH. About a quarter mile later I REALLY wanted that water bottle. I think I need to get a harness for Neeko so he can be my water dog next time and carry my water bottle for me.

I was supposed to do 8 miles yesterday, but I took my sleeping aid too late on Friday night and was too groggy to do anything but lay in bed and doze until almost 10 am. Oops. Instead of running later when it was hot and humid, I dcided to get a jump start on packing/rearranging for my move at the end of June.
Today I was supposed to run 14 miles, but my calves are ridiculously tight. Could I have run 14 miles anyway without any problems? Probably, but I don't want to risk it since I'm just getting back into training mode. Going to do some massage and foam rolling today, and then I'm 100% back in the saddle tomorrow with a 6 am, 6 mile group run! I SWEAR!
Upcoming Races:
6/11: Pacers Princeton Halfway Half (Princeton, NJ)
7/4: A 4th of July race somewhere!
9/11: Lehigh Valley Via Marathon (Allentown, PA)

After yesterday's killer race pace 12 mile run, Today's unscheduled rest day feels like a good idea.....sleeping in until 0730 felt great. Rest day tomorrow too, then just runs on Tuesday and Thursday for this coming cutback week, and my 10k race on Saturday.4

Took yesterday off from running for some hiking, biking, and swimming and just did my usual Sunday 7AM run today. Pace was dragging a bit with the crew due to some humidity and middling temperatures (low 70s), and we paused mid-route to cheer on a local 5K, so I opted to jump off early at the 10.5 mile mark as I had done a longer run on Friday. My stomach wasn't too happy as I also went nuts on Indian food at a wedding last night.
6/1 - 4 miles
6/2 - 8 miles
6/3 - 13.5 miles
6/5 - 10.5 miles
Total: 36 miles
Goal: 200 miles
Remaining: 164 miles
Upcoming Races:
Ironman 70.3 Augusta - Sep
Chicago Marathon - Oct
Ironman Florida - Nov
@adrianChr92 - Epic race report and accompanying meme pics. I love crushing the souls of the 12-14 year olds who start out way too fast in 5Ks and pass them around mile 2. I definitely understand the wasteland thing when you are in the 19-22 minute finish time range, but on the plus side, once you clear the crowds in the first mile, you'll rarely need to fight or dodge folks to run the shortest/most efficient path.6 -
6/1 - 3 miles
6/2 - zip
6/3 - 5 miles
6/4 - 5 miles (I did 2 miles of intervals with my friend then walked 2 miles with her) after that I ran 3 miles with Skip so I'm going to count 5 miles
6/5 - 5 miles
18 of 100 miles
