Good morning all from a rather cloudy day in UK. Still in bed writing this, will get up and do 15 mins weight training and 30 mins cardio. Sunday DH and I go into town, few drinks, listen to a few singers in the bars then home for supper. Going to visit my DD and family on Tuesday to help with packing for house move. My DGD has been diagnosed with EDS, so sad as she is only 15 and spends a lot of time in pain. I feel really helpless and can only pray for her ( even though not sure anyone listens ) Anyway enough sad stuff have a great day everybody1

Morning lovely ladies-

Oh Beth. My DD leaves in about 20 days for college. DH is actually having a hard time as well, won't commit to a larger car rental for the long trek. She has her cello to bring which takes up a lot of room in a civic so DH wants to take 2 cars instead of renting a larger vehicle. Jeez I don't want to drive alone!!! I have to just take over and rent something I just don't want to be alone
For 6 hours after driving my one and only.....
And let's face it, it isn't really about what they bring or dont bring it is that they are going off on their own, ready or not, they are gonna face their mistakes by themselves, figure things out by themselves, yikes. This is gonna be hard we will have to support each other and keep good care of ourselves. Others have told me the first semester is the hardest after that they settle in and are happy.
I was thinking of writing some little notes for her to find among her things like little inspirational sayings, pictures or chocolates or $$$ so she can feel supported. Lately she has retreated to her room, not going out with friends
I think she is as nervous as I am!!! Just wants this new phase of her life to begin.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF BETH, you are not alone.

@spikeyhair which type of EDS?0
-
spikeyhair - I'm sorry about the diagnosis of EDS for your granddaughter. Look up Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, for those who are wondering. Thinking about you.
The iron genuinely is helping me, thanks to those who thought about it. I feel a lot better than I did just a week ago.
Did I mention my reporter and I have begun a cartoon as well? It's very locally focused--so for the one linked here, you would have to know that the town of Fort Stockton boasts what is billed as the "World's Largest Roadrunner," locally known as "Paisano Pete." This particular panel cartoon is just a riff on the Pokemon Go craze. He's the illustrator, and I feed him a concept once a week. The cartoon's titled "Texas Toast," and the two recurring characters are a boy and girl toast slices. We're shooting for gentle humor...
So, my results against my goals, I ended the month this morning with a weight of 177, three pounds down from my weight of 180 at the end of June... My goal is one pound per month, and I started at 186 in January, so at the end of July, would have been quite happy with 179. A couple more pounds than that is a happy bonus.
Since today's the last day of July, for our newbies, there will be new thread for the month of August, begun by our lovely and talented Barbie. She will link to it directly from this thread, and then we start all over again.
My goal for August will be the same: "Be lighter." Removing the focus from the intense concentration on the numbers has been of enormous benefit for me (thank you, Heather for mentioning that). Helps me make better choices, over and over again throughout the month. I'm figuring I have another three years or so before it changes to "Stay lighter."
Love y'all... happy Sunday to all.

MIchele, there are two reasons that I buy New Balance shoes, first because they are comfortable and second because they come in a wide width....which reminds me of another thing my mother said to me when I was a child..."If you keep going barefoot, your feet will get as wide as canal boats."....so now I never go barefoot and my feet are wide.
Lisa, thank you for the kind words....I'm so glad to hear that the iron is helping you feel better.
Alison, you time in NH sounds like the life you should have every day
spikeyhair, so sorry to hear of your granddaughters diagnosis
Barbie
Resolutions for July (with end of the month comments)
*get Jake and me home safely from the hospital in Seattle (successful)
*be a non-grumpy caregiver to Jake during his recovery (successful)
*increase daily meditation time by 5 seconds a day (yes, over 12 minutes now)
*continue sorting and discarding photos (slowed down a bit during hubby's recovery)
*weight training twice a week (did a few times, but stopped for awhile due to leg pain)

Good morning all! Happy Sunday! It has been kind of an overcast weekend, which has been good for me, because it has forced me to stay inside and get paperwork done. Not my favorite thing. I also have spent four hours online completing a driver's skills test. I don't know how it is in other states/countries, but in Michigan, if you get a ticket for a minor infraction (like speeding) you are allowed to take an online course refresher and keep the points off your insurance. I still had to pay the ticket ($120) and had to pay another $40 for the course, but it's worth it to keep my insurance down. But MAN! four hours on the computer taking a test! Like I said, I am glad the weather has been rainy, because I would be crying in my coffee if I was missing the sunshine! Skipped the Beach Boys Tribute Band last night so I could finish the test Oh well, did my crime, did my time.
Spikyhair-So sorry to hear about your DGD diagnosis! Good thoughts and prayers for comfort coming her way!
Heather- ALways love to see the pics of your kids/grands. Isn't it funny to watch even the "big kids" go after the Pokemon? Although Bea is stunning as usual, the pic of your OGD has captured my heart! On the swing with her hair flying...So sweet!
Beth- Oh, how I understand what you are going through right now! I remember those days. You have to do what you need to do to get through the next few days. Getting them off to college when the summer seems to race by at the speed of light...it is a task for a superwoman. Put your mind at ease. I am sure you know, deep down, that he will be fine. It is amazing how resourceful our kids can be when we are not around. Love and hugs to you, friend!
Barbie, Joyce, Becca and all others caring for loved ones this past month- You all are an inspiration to me with everything you are having to take care of and still sticking so closely to your monthly goals/resolutions! A big round of applause!
Charleen- Where are you friend? I hope you are okay! I miss your posts.
NYKaren- I think renting something big enough to get her things and the three of you there is a better idea. Six hour drive gives you more family time. I think the notes among her things is a great idea! When my daughter left for her year of study abroad in France, I made a calendar for her. I just bought a couple packages of those bright colored index cards and wrote the month and date at the top of each one, hole punched each corner and used a ribbon wrapped circular ring to keep them together. I asked her friends, coworkers, relatives to send me their favorite quotes, memories, wishes, song lyrics, etc. and I wrote one on each date, so that as she started each day, she could have a special something from people she loved. All of the collecting was done online and it all went together in just a week. My daughter still has the calendar and enjoys thumbing through it.
Allie- I am SO glad you are enjoying your time with your brother and dad! And lobster in New England sounds heavenly!
Well, I guess I better get busy and finish the rest of my paperwork, just in case the sun decides to come out and play later!

morning peeps -
well, TODAY IS THE LAST DAY OF THE CHALLENGE !!! YEAYYYY!!!, kirby and i are going out for his 1st training ride (his first actual long ride) so i suggested we go to my work and back so he could see what i've been riding and i get to take my stuff to work for the week (bananas, milk, etc..) i am going to take him on the harder ride to work (hilly), after today, i will be taking the train more going home, i may still ride to work if the weather is nice in the morning and not overcast. and no more spin on tues, thurs, sat and sun. i will get to see how much better kirby still is. ! he stretched in front of me a bit ago and i could see his head going back and forth slightly. sad to see. he thinks he's going to get worse as he gets older. :0(
oh and i got a $50 donation for my MS ride! yeayyy ! up to $320 now! i usually get $100 from mom so that's $420!2 -
Kim love your covers. We live near a park so I have to fence parts of the garden off too or keep it high to ward off rabbits.
Spikeyhair so sorry about DGD. Prayers!0 -
Good morning everyone!
Kim, thanks for the pictures of the garden and the row covers. It looks lovely. Amazing how different the soil looks from what I'm used to. Funny Dublin story! We get a frame of reference in our minds and it dominates how we approach something.
Joyce, (((HUGS)))
Cheri, nice to hear from you. I wish you well with all the packing and moving and with selling the house. You sound as if you're handling it well!
Michele, I hear you on the cravings. Yesterday was terrible for me. Went way over my calories (2nd time in a week). Woke up hungry and felt that way most of the day. Ugh. But today's a new day. I figure if I'm on a plateau this week I'll know why. I also figure that I'm eating too much fruit, so today I'll focus on savory, since I tend to manage cravings better if I do that. Plus protein and enough fat to keep me satiated. I've got a corn pudding in the oven for breakfast--eggs (lots of egg white), nonfat milk, full-fat cheddar dheese, masa (I didn't have corn meal--not sure how this will work), sauteed onions, orange pepper, small tomatoes, smoked paprika...it looks okay so far, but since I started out thinking I was going to make a fritatta and switched to corn pudding midstream, I forgot to check the recipe and forgot a crucial step.
Kettle bell swings yesterday:
4 x 15 x 15 lbs
Squats (no weight):
3 x 15
Bridges:
2 x 15, hold for 5 sec at top
Sideways walking w/ band:
2 x 5 steps each direction

Happy to find this thread. Looking forward to joining you for August.
I started July after three weeks of tracking at 170.2; ending at 165.8 even after spending two weeks in France - a food lover's paradise for a total drop of 12.7 since 7 June. Aiming for 147 by the end of 2016.
August has more travels, three major parties...challenges ahead (as always).
Sending good thoughts (and hydrangeas) to all.3 -
KJ, Margaret, DJ, and others who commented on the Pokemon pics. Yes, it's a weird, but amazing craze. I think my son is even keener on it than DGS. Those are his pics as I don't have it on my phone. I must say I was amazed when one turned up in the house! I think DS had earned some special points or something.
DJ - Bea doesn't get any slimmer, but she is incredibly happy and is beginning to be more active. All my son's children were enormous babies as my DDIL's mothering technique is lots of food and lots of sleep. The other two are now a perfect weight.
KJ - My DOGD is a real personality and no shrinking violet. She is afraid of nothing! This morning she nearly drowned herself and DH in the sea by just hurling herself at the water. When she took a gulp of seawater she said, "I like salt! ".
DDIL thinks she might make a good gymnast, as she was when she was a child.
I wore my new beach shoes on the pebbles and went in for a paddle. Lovely!
I managed to do a short kettlebell routine both days, went for walks and today I also did half an hour on the rowing machine when we got back to our house.
Tonight we are having Welsh lamb steaks for dinner, with chard from the garden and broad beans. No alcohol. We've had two days of evening drinks and I don't like the feeling. Trouble is bbqing and eating outside makes you feel that you are on holiday. :ohwell: So on the wagon tonight.
So sorry Spikeyhair to hear of your DGD's diagnosis. I had to Google it. You wish only the best for your grandchildren, don't you.
Now to pick the chard.

I wasn't thinking of just the location, but also the emotional setting--where you could live and work in respect and serenity, where the people in your world treated you with kindness and support1 -
KJ I like your idea about others contributing quotes and encouragement to DD. I think I may ask some folks to contribute some thoughts, sweet
I guess DH read my expression last nite and is looking once again for a rental car to fit a freshmen's teddy bear, her cello and her emotional parents!
Can't believe that July has flown by, I will gather thoughts for August recommitment to myself feeling AND being lighter.

Heather UK In 2000 my mom found out her breast cancer diagnosed in 1977 had recurred and metastasized. So I asked her what was on her bucket list that we might do, and she said she wanted to go to England and Wales. So off we went for 3 weeks. We rented a car (brave me) and headed south to headquarter ourselves in a cottage owned and donated for the duration by the CEO of my company in South Stoke near Arundel. One evening we drove to Brighton...we drove and railed all over England and Wales, saw the cliffs of Dover, went to the Cotswalds, saw Shakespeare until we were sated, lingered at Dylan Thomas' boathouse and explored Swansea, stood in the doorway of a store in Wales listening to the lovely language of the locals until sadly we were discovered and they switched to English. Went to the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff where we were amazed...we really did it to kill some time and were stunned by what was there...Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir...Visited Oxford. Stratford on Avon. All the usual sights in London. My mom wrote a funny poem for her Christmas letter that year about going to England to find the queen, complete with pictures of her in a red phone booth, interviewing a Beefeater, etc, and finally posing with the queen (at the wax museum)...it was a big hit, she got lots of great feedback from people...she was one of those people whose Christmas letters people actually looked forward to, because they were fun and entertaining and short. Unlike this post. I do miss my mom. She's been gone 15 years now.

KJ (Kelly) - I'm still here! I have been super busy getting my super king sized quilt ready for the county fair. I carry it in this coming Tuesday. Show quilts take a lot of time, far more than people realize to make them look so perfect.
Also needed to finish up 2 quilts for a friend who just had a baby. When it rain it pours, my Mariner's Compass quilt just came back from the long arm quilter and needs to be squared up, blocked and binding sewn on. This one is also destined to be entered into future quilt shows, so the hand work needs to be perfect and handwork is a challenge for me.
Here is a quick pic of my Mariner's Compass, a work still in progress.- My July goals were:
- Up my exercise mins to 150 minutes each day (Managed to exercise every day but not 150 each day)
- continue to log my food intake (1,300 calories) (Yay! Did it!)
- try to not eat my exercise calories (Was so much better about this than in June. Most of the calories were not eaten)
- continue to weigh myself once a week (I really hate to do this) (Have done this but still don't like it)
- keep the cat off the scales when I do weigh myself. What's another 13 lbs between friends, right? Done!
I started the month at 189.5 lbs and finished the month at 186 lbs. So I think 3.5 lbs loss makes July a success!
Charleen in Colorado (Keeping my fingers crossed for the quilt going to the fair - hope it's a winner)

final tally for the Great Cycle Challenge! so far (it can change as people ride today but if no one does then this will stick)
nationally i am 21st female nationally (miles ridden) 201st overall.
in this State (WA) 4th overall, 1st place female!
total miles ridden, 1255.7miles there's this one girl, all she has to do is one long ride and she'll beat me.
total rides, including spin classes = 1994 -
Charleen, that quilt is gorgeous!!!

Charleen, that is an amazing quilt - Mariner's Compass is one of my favorite patterns and I have been collecting fabric to to a smaller simpler one of my own... WOW1

Karen V - How lovely to hear of your visit to our island. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. The route we take to Hove/Brighton takes us through some of the most beautiful countryside of the south. Did you get to Petworth House? So sorry to hear that you miss your mum so much. She sounds an amazing woman.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx0 -
KIRBY taking a lil nap after coming home. I took him on my old route to and from work (the harder hillier ones) just so we could see how he did. When we were coming back home going up this one long hill, he passed me (of course). The further he got ahead of me, the bigger I smiled. I was smiling so much I started to tear up. Sometimes I look at him and he looks so frail. He said he never took it off of the harder gear (show off). He hasn't worn the shoulder brace in a long time but by the time we got to Starbucks he was saying how stiff his shoulder was and will need to put it on when we got home. That was only 24 miles. We won't b doing the 80mile ride on day 1 but plan on doing the 60mi instead. I am in awe of his ability after all he has been thru, he is one good example of a true athlete is.6 -
Hello to all. I am hoping for support from this group as I live in the middle of no where in Mississippi and have no one to talk to about my body image issues! I am in menopause and at the same time I developed hypothyroidism. Yay. I have always been very fit and active and never had any weight issues. Boy did that change with menopause. Nothing I did helped either. Finally in the last 6 months I have lost 16 lbs. I am almost back to my pre-menopause weight and wanted to share what has helped me more than anything I have tried. Obviously I needed my thyroid under control, so I finally think that is straight. Then I realized I needed to control my appetite (calorie intake) and I did not want to take any kind of a pill for that. I guess no matter how active you are, age slows the metabolism. I am very much into a healthy, mostly organic and mostly plant based diet. So, I started reading about psyllium husks and how they did lots of positive things including helping with a feeling of satiety. I also began taking Great Lakes Collagen Hydrolysate (I know not plant based, but supposed to support thyroid). Both of these items really help control my appetite, and I mean a LOT! There also do not seem to be any negative side effects of either of these foods according to all I have read on this. I only have 5 more pounds to go. I hope this will work for other people here and wanted to share my story.2
