Is it even possible for ANYONE to be a size 0/1?

The only clothes that come in a size 0 here in Aus are babies clothes.
How anyone can be a size nothing totally confounds me! I would love to know why and who came up with ridiculous concept..

@Christine_72 - I might be mistaken, but I think our size 0 is the equivalent of Aus size 4. Measurement wise I think it's like a 24" waist. Our sizes are pretty messed up here, but they added it because of vanity sizing. We even have a 00.

Our sizes here don't go below a size 6, not that I've seen in any stores anyway. So i "think" an American size 0 would maybe be an Aus size 6. My 5'2 skinny as a rail daughter never fit into a size 6, she was a size 8 as a teenager. So yeah, i think the measurements are different, it's most confusing!!

I agree. My daughter is petite and wears size 6 or 8. Many ranges don't go lower than 8 and we have never seen lower than 6. Any ladies smaller than that ( they would be very small) would have to go to children's clothing.

I have seen size 4 here (Australia) in fancy fashion shops and in stores that cater for petite (not just short) people. I always hold them up in amazement that an adult's bone structure could be so small but some people are. I think I could probably be that size if I was literally just my skeleton without muscles or skin!

I will never be a size 0 and I'm okay with that. Right now I'm 5'6" 156 lbs and in a size 9 and I could probably squeeze into an 8 but I haven't bothered to buy new jeans until the 9's get too loose. My hips are too wide to probably be able to fit into anything smaller than a 6.

I wear smaller than a 000 which is smaller than I was a teen. My waist size is several inches smaller (was 25, now 22), so yes it's possible to be a size 0 or 1. I haven't found any companies that make waist sizes smaller than 23". 0 and 00s aren't that small anymore, I think most people could fit into a 0 if they really wanted to at most major stores due to vanity sizing.

Absolutely. My good friend's daughter is 5' 8", weighs about 120, and wears a size 0 - 2. Two of my grown-women friends are tiny, tiny women -- their figures are very narrow, straight, and flat. They wear size 2.

I really wish they would 'regulate' women's clothing sizes in the US. I've got jeans that span two and a half decades and I can pull out four different sized pairs that fit me almost identically since they keep changing what measurement equals which size. I'd love to go by measurements and be able to order online. A made up number doesn't change my physical size. I hate vanity sizing.

Yeah, I would never buy clothes online. Who the hell knows what size you'll end up with. Even dhoe sizes differ from company to company.

My daughter wears a US women's size 0. She is a very slim 16 year old who is as tall as an adult woman but otherwise could wear child sizes. I don't expect that in a few years she will be wearing that size as her body is still growing.
Clothing sizes are just random numbers that vary by brand anyway. Don't get stuck on what size clothing you wear and just buy clothes that fit.

I actually do order dresses and tops online with a good amount of success , with the slacks I have to just know a certain brand - LEE Jeans for example , will fit.

It is fine to order online if the physical store is nearby and accepts returns, this works with Old Navy, Macy's , Penney's and they arrive at my house in about two days.

My present size is likely a 4 and yes, I was happy at size 0 - getting there again, anyone's guess.

Last year when I was measured for a bridesmaid dress that came in US sizing I was a size 0 on my top half and I'm not particularly small, but I have small boobs.

ETA: I am 5ft5 and was about 132lbs at the time

No way! My frame is too wide. At 125lbs and just below 5'7 my trousers are around US size 8-10.

This is a genuine question, is size 0 even healthy?

I'm 5' tall and ~113 pounds and a size 0 is just about right for me - I've got pretty narrow hips.

Also, a size 0 now isn't the same as a size 0 from a while back. I have a pair of shorts my aunt gave me (these shorts are probably 20+ years old now) and they're labeled as a size 8, but are about as snug as the 0's I've picked up at Target recently.

A size 0 isn't possible for everyone, but there's plenty of folks that can fit into that size and be a healthy weight also.

    ~Lyssa

Exactly. I'm 5'3" and 109 pounds. I'm not a size 0 at Target anymore, I'm a 00. The vanity sizing in the US, especially at Target, is out of control. In equivalent sizing I'd be between a UK 4 and 6.

Vanity sizing is INSANE! I'm a size 0 in some brands but others are way to big for me in general. I'm 5'4.5 and 130. I do have very narrow hips and broad shoulders but still!

If it gets worse, they'll have to make 000 and 0000. I wouldn't be surprised if a 000 existed!

See, now that kind of shows the fact that for some women they just can't fit into a US size 0. I'm 5ft 4.5in and even at a weight of 125 couldn't fit into a size 0....or a size 1 for that matter! I was pretty skinny but my bone structure just wouldnt allow it.

I do agree with this. I have a few friends who are very thin and my height. They can wear size 4-6s. They just have a larger bone structure than me.

Moral of the story, some women can fit into a size 0 and be healthy. However, other women cannot due to wide hips etc.

I think focusing on a number (whether it be weight or size) and comparing it to others does no one any good.

definitely don't aim for a clothing size. They arent consistent and mean absolutely nothing.

I wear a size 0 at some stores, a double 00 at stores like american eagle or hollister, a size 3 are new york and company,a size 4 at h&m, a size 00 at the gap, a size 24 at forever 21.... need i go on?

Not to mention that you are now an adult. find the best weight for your height/build and go from there.

p.s. i just want to mention to the comment someone made before... i've actually been in stores where they have heavy vanity sizing and i HAVE had to wear a child's size 14. i am a grown *kitten* woman. I also can't shop at victoria's secret and am always subjected to "pink"s childish bras.

Yes. A couple of years ago I accidentally lost too much weight from and antisiezure medication (Topamax) and quickly dropped down to 100 - 105 lbs - was a size 0. I was in my late 30's and have never had kids. I think as long as you haven't had kids it's possible to achieve that size when you're older. I would just make certain exercise is a part of your plan for getting there to maintain muscle. If you do it too quickly and lose muscle you're in for a rude awakening and it's difficult to build muscle back as I'm finding :/. I'm now at 113lbs and I have so much more fat at this weight than when I was younger that I feel obligated to get back down to 105lbs to start recomp. Make certain you lose it the right way ;)

    How old are you?

Women's bodies continue to change as they get older.

    18 according to profile.

So you are correct in thinking that you may not be capable of getting back to the size you were when you were 14 years old. Your body has almost definitely changed since then.

Yep. My daughter was a 0--sometimes even a 00--until her late teens. Now she's 19 (almost 20) and is a size 2, sometimes a 4 if things run small. She's fine with it and isn't striving to get down to a 0. She knows that her body has changed and is curvier now. She likes it.

ETA: She's also 4'10" so she watches what she eats because she knows that she shouldn't get much bigger, due to her height.

I'm in Canada, am much older and quite short, and was a size 0-1 for a couple of years until an injury in my 30s. It's doable, but looking back on the pictures, I don't think I'd ever want to be that skinny again! Right now I'm happy (and much healthier) at size 4ish. :)

Correct. I recently bought a dress made by Hobbs (a UK company) which has both UK and US sizes on it. And the US size is two down from the UK size.

I bought some capris in a store that fit, bought another pair online from the same company in a slightly different style of capri but the same size, and had to lose 30 pounds before they fit!

Repeat - same size, same brand, slightly different design, 30 pounds difference.

My 5'4 visually slim 11 year old is a size 0 now. She would have to stop growing and developing right now to stay size 0. Don't worry so much about what dress size you end up OP. Create a small deficit and get into a healthy weight range and do some strength training. My bet is you will then be happy with your body no matter what clothing size you end up.

Several places will give the specific measurements for items. I have no choice but to buy trousers online because nobody local carries the cut that I like, or petite size samples in store (they have to be ordered). The places I shop online give the dimensions and the inseam and waist in inches so there aren't surprises. Same for dresses and tops (i.e. Arm length, shoulder width, etc). I have yet to have to return anything. Anthropolgie and Brooke's Brothers are very good for this, and if you buy the sale items they come out to department store prices. Another perk is if a measurement is off they will alter the garment for you before sending it out if you know what length, width you need.

I absolutely loath playing the sizing game with US sizes and refuse to deal with stores that won't give dimensions in either metric or imperial measurements. The generic US sizes are literally meaningless for the reason kshama2001 outlined. I refuse to have items hanging in my closet taking up space because they are not immediately useable - there is no guarantee that I will either lose or gain the appropriate amount of weight to accommodate the garment.

While I'm venting, the US sizes are totally body's anyway. I am literally the same size I was in high school 20 years ago...back then I worse a size 5/6...now I wear a size 2/3 - how silly. If I purchase US cloths from the 1950's or 60's I am a solid 8. The way this is going in 20 years I'll be wearing a negative numbered size.

Try having a torso, that's 3 different sizes! My hips're a US 14, my waist is a US 12 & my chest is a US 10. If we all just wore togas, this thread; wouldn't exist!

This might be a stupid question but is it possible to every person to get down to a very low size such as 0 or 1? (Obviously not counting those with medical conditions or anything like that).
Last time I was a size 1 was 4 years ago when I was only 12 pounds lighter. Right now I'm a size 6 (same height). I'm starting to feel like there's no way I'm even capable of getting back into a size 1 because of my bone structure changing as I've gotten older. Is that possible?
Unless you're still growing, your bone structure hasn't changed. What has changed would be likely be fat deposit. You're less active and likely eat more now. And if you're 18, you're DEFINITELY different than from being 14.

Depends what country an American size 0 is a UK size 4 so a UK size 0 is an American size -4. I don't generally like the 'size 0' look.
