NON WW & WW NEWBIES, OUR NEW LIFE, THE START OF SOMETHING WONDERFUL

So I’m going really well with food and exercise this week (and I better have a somewhat decent loss this or I’m going to have a right tantrum😂). But also wanted to note a change I’ve seen this last couple of days. I’ve found myself back in the numbers game. Which is mostly a good thing - I’m aware of what things “cost” and “earn”. But the downside is a trap I also fell into with WW - that it comes to evening and I have cals left to “spend” so there is a part of my brain that really really wants to just cause I CAN. It’s like, instead of just stopping eating, I go “ooh I can have cake or chocolate or whatever I fancy”. Then those voices are actually really hard to ignore. Maybe it’s cause I’m tired and worn down my evening, maybe it’s just cause I gave such a sweet tooth and I really do enjoy those foods. But that trend is annoying me. The numbers game is both motivating and dangerous for me. I tell myself that so long as I stay under budget I’ll be fine - that is a WW hangover that I want to drop - I don’t want to see it that way. I need to switch to seeing those leftover numbers as reward numbers or something else - something other than surplus left ro be “spent”.
@trooworld I just picked up the second book - but a busy evening so won’t get into it till 8:30, then likely as not I’ll be asleep by the end of the first chapter 🙄

@Tamevv Could you put an actual sign on the refrigerator (or cupboards) that says "KITCHEN IS CLOSED" as a reminder not to eat? I know some people find that kind of thing helpful. I'm partway through the second book. I hope we like it!
Hi all. Not much to report here. I had another bout of depression yesterday so it's not gone yet. I meditated for 12 minutes after work, that felt good to do. I didn't track yesterday. I will go back and track after this.
Water yesterday: 50 oz
My phrase for the year: "Something needs to change…so I will take no crap and eat no crap!"0 -
@trooworld Yeah, I’ve don’t that kind of thing before, mixed success but I’ll do it again and see if it helps. Sometimes the physical visual reminder can be enough to jolt me back to my senses.
As I type I’m sitting with coffee, heat pack and a slice of cake (okay two - but they are the super thin ones from that cake i portioned out a while ago - and I’ll track them both I promise). Needless to say, not a great morning. My sons had a fight and one actually punched the other. First time I’ve had to deal with this and it’s made me sad 😢. They are 11 and 13 and as kids they’ve got physical of course but this is the first real violence in anger. Also I’m fragile anyway because i think I’m a bit PMS-ey and DH was insensitive this morning, and one of my students is really struggling and I know I’m on emotional support duty today but knowing what she is going through on top of everything else I don’t know if I can keep it together and not burst into tears myself! I totally have to go to work with game-face on and very firm boundaries to my own emotions today. I’m no use to her if I fall apart myself.
So I’m sitting here taking a moment. On the positives I got up and did my exercise although only 15mins this morning. Still did it tho. Water is going good and for the most part eating well.0 -
Thank you all! So I was going to start next week but the tuition reimbursement program with my employer is not going to be approved in time so I have to defer starting until the spring. Oh well gives me time to save more.0
-
@trooworld Looks like you got in some water. That's good. Plus you did some meditating to help with the depression. Did you go back and track your food?
@Tamevv Start talking back to those voices in your head... Yes, I could have cake and still be under my calorie goal but I'm not going to because cake isn't healthy for me right now. So how about you make a game with yourself. Think of things you would like to buy. They cost X number of left over calories. You can either buy a bunch of small things or save them for a larger more expensive item.
Look at all the positives you had on a "bad" day. If the anger continues, do you have access to an anger management specialist? I had to take my son to one when he was about 15.
@gemwolf110 Booo on the setback but I always think when things happen like this it's usually for some good reason. Now you have a whole semester where instead of focusing on your studies, you can focus on yourself and lose some extra weight you want to get rid of. That way when school starts in the spring you will be a more energetic, thinner version of yourself.
I got 2/3 towards my green dot today. Blasted water! Have any of you seen the app called Daily Dozen? I think it's a good way to set some mini goals towards eating more healthily. It's things to add to your day. I think I want to start with the cruciferous veggies daily as a goal and learn to be consistent with that and then I'll pick something else to work towards. I might even post my # of checkboxes that I got for the day. I just counted them up and I got 14/251 -
Hi @theslightedgeforever. Thanks, I like the idea of doing direct comparisons of what I could save up for instead. I do a bit of this already during the day - weigh up what I could “afford” instead and it works well during the days. Re: anger management I don’t think we are there yet, he felt so terrible after. Lots of tears all round this morning. The rest of my day was okay though, support included kitchen time and given the circumstances I didn’t want to say I wasn’t going to eat her food, so lunch was hijacked and then small saga with other kids this afternoon led to a bakery trip and here we are. Maybe there was something in the air here today cause all the teenagers around me seemed to have a doozy. Tomorrow is my day off so planning a quiet one to recover.0 -
@gemwolf It’s good they will keep the place for you now you’ve been officially accepted. Will also give you opportunity to get a head start on readings and set up study space or stationary etc if you need to. I like planning time 😊.
Yes I’m very happy that they will do that. And I like planning time too. Gives me time to pick out the right laptop.

Yes it does. A few other things popped up so it is better that it was delayed. Everything happens for a reason.0 -
@Tamevv I hope it helps. Oh gosh, I wouldn't know what to do if that happened with my kids. I don't have kids, so I wouldn't know what to do if anything happened, really, but that would be tough. I'm glad you are taking a moment for yourself. Good job with the exercise, water, and eating well!
@gemwolf110 That's great that your employer does tuition reimbursement!
@theslightedgeforever Some days. Not yesterday, not the day before. That's great you got most of a day of green dot! Yay for water! I think I've seen that app. I don't know, I'll have to look at it. 14 out of 25 is pretty good for not trying. Okay I just looked it up, it's not the one I was thinking of. This one you have is based on a book called "How Not to Die" and "How Not to Diet". I have read part of "How Not to Diet". I'm going to download it and try it. I got 12 out of 24 for yesterday.
Hi all. Yesterday was extremely hard. The day went by so slowly because of my depression. It was also hard because I had to put on a fake smile and act like nothing was wrong. I really wanted to go home the whole day. Today will be much the same as I am still depressed. I tried listening to music and an audiobook while I was working but neither of them helped much.

Morning all, Well reading the post, really makes me stop and think about Life. I too have been fighting depression this week, anxiety...it's been a week. I haven't had another seizure, trying to learn ways to keep calm, bp down, etc...I blame some of this we all go through on our world itself. Seems we all as humans worry a lot more, or are more hateful, etc. I am looking for that "peace" that passes all understanding.. .
@trooworld I will be keeping you in prayer, depression is nothing to take lightly...It really is a life sucker and I am here to tell you I want to be living not existing...how about you....we work together?
@tamevv So sorry to hear about the boys...seems like it's in the air...you have a good head on your shoulders and I know you are using them...I have to say I play the numbers game too..LOL
@gemwolf110 So happy to hear you get tuition reimbursed.. that's great...yes please take this time to get other things in your life ready for all the studying you'll be doing..LOL. I am so excited for you.
@theslightedgeforever you like your little boxes...want to do some of mine? I would NEVER have chosen the cruciferous veggies as my first choice. I was looking at those and wasn't a whole lot I am interested in....you know me and my veggies..LOL

I fell asleep in front of the telly last night and then slept in this morning, must’ve been tired. still got myself up and managed 30 minutes of exercise before getting started for the day. Step rate was a bit slow this morning and heart rate and down but I know I’m doing a proper workout later so this was just a bonus. I’ve also adjusted my breakfast - my usual is a slice of fancy seeded bread loaf (expensive but I buy just for me cause I love it - no one else eats it so it lives in the freezer and I just use one slice per day. Feels like a special treat - kinda sad actually when a slice of bread is your highlight 😂). Anyway I have it with my favourite sauce and two eggs. The last few days I’ve been having just one egg, and today I’m going to do without the sauce. I’m undecided if I’ll stick to that because I really enjoy breakfast, but for today at least I’m looking forward to just salt and pepper.0
-
@Tamevv I have always had a hard time coming up with "rewards" if I meet a goal or something. I might have to play that game I suggested myself.
@gemwolf110 Spring seems so far off but it will be here before we know it. I love springtime and all the flowers blooming.
@trooworld I had once read depression is anger turned inward. Is there anything that you are really angry about? Or maybe write in your journal, I'm really depressed because and then just see what comes out. It's not a matter of finding solutions right now but just feeling the feelings and getting them out of your head.1 -
@trooworld. So sorry to hear you’re struggling 😔. Seems like you are trying a few different things which is great, hopefully something will make today a bit easier. I’m home today so will look up that numbers book you two are talking about as well - each new idea or perspective has the potential to motivate me or “click” in a new way 😊.
I’ve been really tempted already this morning but haven’t caved yet and got a few things done. Feeling hungry though. And I need to meal plan which is sometimes a trigger. The sun is shining and weeds outside are calling to me but I’m not sure if that is just a distraction or not, so I’m going to do the step workout first then see if I still feel up for the weeds later on. Will delay meal planning till I feel stronger willed.
PS did do half an hour of weeding but my legs were sore!0 -
@cbabie I'm so sorry you had another seizure, cbabie. When do you go to the neurologist? Looking for peace that passes as understanding sounds like something we all should do. Thank you re: my depression. I hope yours lifts, too. Yes, we work together on this.
@Tamevv Great job with the exercise! I like seedy bread, too. I hope you enjoyed your breaky. Thanks re: my depression. I'm glad you resisted the food and got a few things done. Weeding sounds like good exercise.
@theslightedgeforever I've heard that, too. I think in some cases, that is true but not in this case. I have a biological cause for my depression, I have a chemical imbalance, and I take medication for my depression. Unfortunately, I still get bouts of it despite taking meds for it. I think I just have to ride out the storm, so to speak.
Hello all. The depression is still there but I feel like it has lessened slightly. It's very hard to get motivated to do anything when depressed. I am going to try to work out this morning, we'll see if it happens. I've got a lot to do at work. I am working from home today and tomorrow, as usual.

Morning all. Early start for me today but I’m up and drank water and did 5 mins on the elliptical - not much but enough to keep me in routine.0
-
@cbabie I totally agree - the stuff kids worry about and deal with these days are so different from what I went through. I know every generation has its struggles, but I think the biggest difference now is the lack of human interaction - in person. Support networks are different now and my kids can keep telling me how online groups make them feel connected and so on, but nothing beats actually sitting beside someone and sharing space.0

@cbabie You know why I chose the cruciferous veggies first? "While eating fresh fruits, beans, vegetables, seeds, and nuts have been all been shown in scientific studies to reduce the occurrence of cancer, cruciferous vegetables are different. Instead of a one-to-one relationship against cancer, they have a one-to-two relationship with a wide variety of human cancers. In other words, as plant food intake goes up 20 percent in a population, cancer rates typically drop 20 percent. But as cruciferous vegetable intake goes up 20 percent, cancer rates typically drop 40 percent.
Fuhrman, Joel. The End of Diabetes: The Eat to Live Plan to Prevent and Reverse Diabetes (pp. 127-128). HarperOne. Kindle Edition.
@trooworld I'm glad to see the depression is lessening.
@Tamevv If you are hungry, could you eat a piece of fruit or veggie? Good job on your consistency with water and movement.
Guess what I got today. 🟢 Plus I got 15/24 on my Daily Dozen.
My f\v: butternut squash, cauliflower, corn, cherries
I lost 1.6 lbs this week0 -
@Tamevv Consistency is the key and you are doing it!
@theslightedgeforever Thank you. Yay for a green dot and 15/24!!! Congrats on the loss!
Hi all. Still depressed here but a little less so. I'm not tracking right now, I haven't tracked since about Monday or Tuesday. I will start again tomorrow I guess. It's hard to get motivated to do anything right now. I did not work out yesterday and probably won't today but I am scheduled to go for a hike on Sunday with a friend.

@trooworld I am sorry that you have been feeling lonely because your DH needs to spend time with his brother. It’s hard when our person isn’t around or in my case, my person isn’t the same person anymore. I agree that finding things to keep us busy is a good idea. This is why I’m happy my sister moved in and we spend many afternoons and early evenings talking and working on a puzzle. Hopefully getting out in the fresh air with your friend on Sunday will help improve your mood. Hang in there!
@theslightedgeforever I did OK at the potluck but my mom made my favorite peach coconut cake and there was half a pan left over that came home. I told her that we are not taking any more desserts to these potlucks and if we do they aren’t coming home. Very interesting about the cruciferous veggies. We eat quite a bit of them now but I think I will try to increase them a bit more in our meal plans.
@cbabie you are in my prayers!
Hi everyone! Sorry that I haven’t been around. Work and life have been busy lately. Joe got his results from his CT scan and no cancer was found. Yayyy!! However, the oncologist is very concerned as to why he is still so anemic and has ordered a bone marrow biopsy for next week. I sure hope the doctor can get to the bottom of this problem. I think the anemia is why Joe is always so exhausted. I gained this week and really need to get my act together! Trooworld started a fall challenge in our MFP group and I’ve already challenged myself to give it a 100% by fasting clean, working out, and NOT getting a gain on my scale. I just need to focus...and keep food out of my mouth!

Checking in. Didn’t eat great today but exercised this morning. Hope everyone has a good day. 👋0
-
@TeresaW1020 Yes, it is. I'm sorry if you felt lonely too. I think the hike will be just what I need! No cancer, that's awesome!!! I'm so glad to hear this! I also need to get my act together. I also gained this week: +3.4 lbs. Not ideal. I'm glad the F2F challenge will help you focus!
@Tamevv Yay for the exercise! Have a great day!
Hi all. Well, as I told @TeresaW1020 above, I gained 3.4 lbs this week and I'm not surprised. Yesterday, I binged on chips and dip. Why did I have this in the house? I didn't. Before work, I stopped for some groceries and they jumped in my cart. Before I knew it, half the bag was gone. I really need to get my act together as well. I'm going to my WW meeting this morning, maybe that will inspire me.

While on the elliptical this morning I did some reflection about yesterdays food. I’m not feeling too bad about it, just disappointed about how it will effect my scale on Friday. I had the tiniest stupid loss last week but I’m surprisingly okay - it was my first “good” week in a while so am telling myself if I keep at it the numbers will cooperate eventually. And I DO feel better and stronger and healthier for it so for now that is keeping me going. I guess if I can keep it up most of the time and when I really crave stuff then I can splurge a little. That said though, I’ve decided that I will try to remember to at the very least have a glass of water before any “treat” type food - that will make me pause and decide consciously rather try an just reacting to the urge. This is not a new strategy, but I’ve been lax in doing it so really trying to keep it in mind this week. Problem is when the urges hit I lose that connection to conscious mind…. but I’m going to make that my goal this week.
And I want to do my measurements. I’ve been promising myself I would all week, but just never make time. I want to tho, so will try to make myself do it.
@ trooworld Sounds like you have a great day planned with meeting then hike. I really hope it does wonders to refresh you for the week.
@teresaw1020 Yay for the clear CT!! That’s awesome news 😁. Can i ask what the challenge is? I haven’t ventured around MFP very much, and when I try it all gets a bit confusing and rabbit-hole-ish.0 -
@trooworld Did you start tracking? Even if you can't remember everything just track what you can and start from there. I'm going hiking with the family tomorrow at a state park. Back to the basics that you know work. I do alot better eating chips and dip if I have them as a part of a meal instead of as a snack. Because then the other food fills me up but I still get to eat something I really like. I can count out 11 and 2T of dip and be just fine. I found out I can't buy those Ritz Toasted Sour Cream and Onion crackers. I'll just eat the whole bag within 2 days.
@teresaw1020 I think it would be so hard that the person you love isn't the same person you once knew. Woohoo on cancer free. You can be successful on your challenge. Just one day at a time.
@tamevv Yaaay on the exercise. You said, "I did some reflection about yesterdays food. I’m not feeling too bad about it, just disappointed about how it will effect my scale" What if you did this "how it will effect my scale and insert the word health. "just disappointed about how it will affect my health. Any forward progress is progress. All of the good habits you are making is worth way more than any number on the scale. Just keep trying to connect with your conscious mind. It will eventually be an ingrained habit.
Yesterday I went to the gym and started my hill/sprint program. I'm committing to it 2 days a week. I'm hoping to expand my lung capacity and fitness so I can go up hills next year when dd and I make our annual vacation somewhere. (without breathing hard thinking I'm going to die)
Yesterday: no green dot 10/24 onions, applesauce, blueberries, green peppers, mushrooms
Today: no green dot 6/24 cherries, onions, green peppers, mushrooms, blueberries

@Tamevv Feeling stronger and healthier are great NSVs. That's a good idea to have a glass of water before a treat food. Great thinking! Thank you. Yesterday was just the WW meeting, today is the hike, but it should be good!
@theslightedgeforever I started yesterday. Seems like today is a great day to hike for everyone! I hope you enjoy it. That's a good idea to have chips and dip as part of a meal. I don't think I would ever do that though because when I let go enough to have chips and dip, I know I'm about to binge. Oh those crackers are good, I have had those too. Yay for going to the gym! That's a great goal.
Hi all. I stayed up too late playing a card game with my husband. Now, I'm tired but determined to give this hike my all. We've never been to this hiking place so hopefully we don't get lost.

Hello all. My friend and I hiked for an hour yesterday. It was nice to be out in nature and nice to talk to my friend. When I got back from the hike, my knee was bothering me. It got worse and worse and I put ice on it several times yesterday. It feels a bit better today but not 100%. I tracked everything yesterday. I'm still depressed but it's getting a bit better.

@trooworld. Fantastic effort !!!!! Sucks about your knee - I’m really conscious of mine now cause if I do an injury I know it’ll take a while to heal - getting old and all 🙄. Really proud of your effort yesterday tho.0
-
@trooworld Your hiking place looks good. We didn't go on the hike. It had been raining for almost 3 days and had quit in the morning but I was afraid the trails would be muddy. So we decided that we would go for a walk around the neighborhood instead. Dd didn't want to go until 7, hubby said he would only go at 5, both didn't go so I went by myself about 7:30 and did 40 minutes. I was glad I kept to my word. How's the knee today?
@tamevv I struggle with a knee problem too. It's swollen today but I just deal with it. I need to find some more stretches. I've been building up the muscles around the knee. That was part of my physical therapy so I'm continuing that. How was your habits today?
Yesterday: 11/24 Applesauce, lettuce, tomato, onion
Today: 15/24, cherries, peach, apple/kiwi juice, edamame0 -
@theslightedgeforever 👍👍. Good on you! Also setting a great example for them about self-care and commitment. Great effort 👏
Things are going well here - I’m really proud of myself for getting up every morning and doing half an hour workout. Some mornings I have to fight off the voices in my head, but am setting out clothes the night before and once I get going I know I can do it and I know how good I’ll feel after so I push through. It’s been …. Maybe two full weeks now… will have to check. Physically feeling really good for it. Food is not perfect, actually it’s only snacks - meals are going great and I’m eating salads and veggies. Cant get away from my sweet tooth though, but feel like it’s okay for now. Ramble ramble - the short story is I’m feeling good 😊.0 -
@trooworld I meant to ask what card game you play with your husband? We play a lot of games (DH is more into it than me) and I do like card games. Not a lot of interesting ones for 2 players tho, so suggestions welcome 😊0
