Good Morning All This seems like a supportive lively group! I am going to jump right in!
I'm back on .. attemping to make my health a priority once again. I have high blood pressure and know if I don't start eating healthier and exercising regularly its gonna cause problems in the future, that I don't want. I am a few years from 60, married , with two adult childen. We just bought a Breville juicer, if anyone has a favorite recipie to share, that would be great. I see many of you use kettle bells , I am looking into those, as I only have dumbells. I have around 18 stubborn pounds to lose that has yo-yo back and forth for years. Also I am trying IF, my eating window 8 hrs.
My screen picture is not me , I just loved the jean and lace combo!!
Happy Friday!

DJ love the shoes and pediicure.

(((Mary))) I love dogs but my DH so opposed he said he would leave me if I got one. Given his attitude I would not bring a dog into our home. Not good for the dog.

Di, Iron is hard to absorb from pills. Often it will just pass right through. It is better to try to get it from food sources- clams, liver, sunflower seeds, nuts, beef, lamb, beans, whole grains, dark leafy greens (spinach), dark chocolate, and tofu. Another way to get iron is to use your cast iron cookware, especially if you make something with tomatoes (the acidity releases the iron from the pot in to the sauce). Weight watchers in the 70s required eating liver once a week so people following their plan would not become anemic.2
-
@Miriamwithcats thank you for the hints. I try to eat the meat and some days I do well. I do like liver but it is hard to find GOOD liver. You seem knowledgeable about this. Thanks again.
Did about 45 minutes of pulling weeds. That's my day's work--45 min of Silver Sneakers and 45 min of pulling weeds. Time for a break. Doc, our black lab, wants his "snack".
Mary, and Margaretturk--love my dog and all the dogs before. Retired dog trainer/dog behavior specialist. also worked with Service Dogs. Now I am down to just Doc. Great companion.

Glo so sorry to hear of your loss. Prayers for you and your family. My paternal grandmother lived to 100 years old and I guess I fully expect my father to live that long. Be kind to yourself during your time of mourning.

Chris in MA: I'm so sorry for your broken relationship. I hope that it can miraculously be healed. You did a good thing by letting the President fo your company know what is going on with your work hours. I hope good things happen because of it. :flowerforyou:
KarenE: I sympathize and have a similar situation. I have a sports bra that I wear for yoga. If I try to put it on right after a shower when my skin is still damp, there is h*ll to pay. It sticks to my damp skin and I often need DH's help to get it on. If I'm dry I don't have any problems at all.
Kylia in OH: I knew a woman long ago who spent Sundays cooking. She packaged meals for herself that would last through her workweek. She was fit and seemed happy. At the time I was in my twenties and she was much older--somewhere in her fifties I'd guess.
Rori: Thanks for the Reiki link.
Yoga today. Yay! I'll do a kettlebell workout while I'm at the gym. Wednesday I did 2 sets, 10 reps, at 20 lbs. I find that my frozen shoulder is improving. I realize I'm doing lighter weight and fewer reps than many of you, but this seems right for my body.
Have a great day!

We made it to Friday friends!
The period of rain we are having here has definitely cooled the temps down from the 100s to the mid to high 80s. However the humidity is a killer. Mostly staying indoors at this point. God bless air conditioning.
We joined the local Planet Fitness and met with a trainer who set up a workout schedule for us. We will be going this evening for our first workout. I really like the atmosphere at this gym. We have been members of several others so not new to this type of working out. Hopefully we will go Fri, Sat and Sun together. I plan on going during the rest of the week during the day for a couple of more workouts if only just to get in my cardio.
We went to a BBQ at the local Honda dealership last night to be introduced to the dealership and what it offers in terms of maintenance etc. The hubs loves his new Civic Sedan. We are life long Honda owners and this is the first time a dealership has offered this type of event. A small dealership that is "family" oriented. Nice.
I went to the library and got my card. Checked out some books. Love that this library is much bigger than the one I left in Ohio. Have emailed the book club coordinator and am set to attend the next club meeting at the library. Already know how to get to the library, Kroger, Super WalMart and Planet Fitness without the Garmin!
Have an event or two coming up with the hubs through Texas A&M which we will attend. I like that feeling of belongingness (?) working at a University brings. We are homebodies to the max and this is a nice way to be social on occasion.
Watching synchronized swimming on the Olympics. How do they hold their breath for so long?! Need to put my laundry in the dryer. Unpacking my craft supplies today and getting back in the business of creating artful things!
Happy Friday pals!

Hello all!
Di - Could you train yourself like you train a dog? Sounds like you should have some good insights into motivation, habits etc! :flowerforyou:
Our first day of rain for quite a while. It has been steady all day. The garden REALLY needed it.
Karen in V - and DJ - YEAH, I did some memoir today! Yippee! I was writing about how I was scared once by the full moon appearing in the kitchen window when I came down by myself for a drink of water. That stayed with me for years.
Then I printed out various bookings etc that have been queuing up to be done. Even in these email days I prefer to have a bit of paper with me.
Last night I corresponded with my DDIL about possible birthday presents for DGD. Decided on a beautiful flowery fluffy lined anorak and a new saucepan set for her toy stove. It's got a saucepan, a wok, a griddle and some tongs, plus some heat mitts. I don't see that as sexist because her dad is the cook in the family and the stove was her brother's to start with. I decided to opt out of a fancy dress outfit, because my politically correct conscience was having trouble with the options available. I'll let her mum make those decisions. :ohwell:
We're giving ourselves a rare treat tonight of fillet steak. I'm going to make a bit of garlic butter as steak just doesn't taste the same without it. That's my excuse, anyway. Having it with cavalry Nero and broccoli. Should be full of iron after that lot. Of course, it needs red wine to drink with it.
Re - The apple and blackcurrant was a dessert. DH makes stewed fruit for us to have every day. Different kinds. He is the fruit monitor in the house. Every day he also makes a gorgeous fruit salad for me to have on my muesli for breakfast. He buys it as well and keeps track of what fruit there is in the fridge. He's a keeper.
Used my heavier weights for my strength training today. 9kgs each dumbell. So I am doing bicep curls with 40 lbs. Nice.
Chris - Sorry to hear about the demise of your relationship. That is always so hard. Sending you hugs. I ended up going for grief conselling when one important relationship came to an end after 10 months. That particular therapist was the best one I ever had and I have had quite a few.
My BFF is off to Paris on Sunday to see her granddaughter, over from Hong Kong. I am feeling pangs of nostalgia for Paris. Ooooooow it hurts! Looking forward to London and DH's daughter on Monday and we are also meeting up with an old friend of DH''s and his wife, who is developing Alzheimers. Haven't seen them since DH's 70th last year.
I have tentatively arranged to see my cancer friend in London on the 30th, but she is inclined to cancel at the last moment.
I am pining for the DGC. In fact, I'm generally having one of my "restless" periods, as DH puts it.

Glo- so sorry to hear about your dad!(((hugs)))
Chris- I sympathize with you about your long working hours and how it affects your relationship. My DH is living to work not working to live. I keep telling him he has to make our life a priority. Talking to your boss was the right thing to do. I hope everything turns out for you. Sorry to hear about your relationship. Possibly things could turn around if you want.
KarenVA- thanks! It would be nice to get together and have a cup of tea! It is so nice that we could talk here and get motivation and support from so many great people.
Have a great day everyone!
Mary from Minnesota2 -
Heather- Great job on the increase in your weights! You are doing an amazing job with your exercise!
Mary from Minnesota1 -
Hi to everyone. New to this board. Don't usually post on these things but it's getting a little rough out there alone trying to lose any weight at all. Just when I think I've lost a pound the next day it's back and I only had a cup of tea and water!
Son got me a fitbit tracker and so I've got no excuses not to use it.
Have problems with the knees and also feet so losing the excess weight can only be a good thing.
I am retired so have the time to go to the Y and like to go to yoga and Zumba, although that has been difficult lately because of my knees also walking when it's not too hot. Looking for a walking buddy if they live near me in RI.2 -
@marion431 I see this is your very first post. You stumbled onto the most supportive thread on MFP. Be sure to click on the pale star at the top right corner of the post at the top of this page, just above the little magnifying glass symbol to bookmark this thread so you can find it again. We are chatty and supportive. Welcome, Marion from RI!

@cityjaneLondon You have a good point... Never thought about it. But now that you mention it, i think it is a great idea--only thing is, I won't use food as my motivator LOL Could use some clothes tho and a size down would sure be great!!!!
welcome marion431. I just really got started, but this seems like a good group. ((((((hugs)))))) for the journey

Di from PA Ummmmmm, maybe you could share some of your dog training wisdom with the rest of us? As long as we don't all become Pavlov's salivating dogs, LOL!
Karen in VIrginia1 -
Karen---Have to adapt all the motivation and reward to humans....good behavior hmmm--can chase a ball for fun after doing sit and stay----get a bone for heeling---I will work on motivation for us ladies--perhaps after a weight loss we can get a manicure or pedi? but a new outfit or sit and relax with a good book and glass of unsweet iced tea or have coffee with a friend...2 of my favorite things to do.....
Di2 -
My DDIL used to use gold stars on a chart and nice excursions as motivators, or something else the kids really wanted. Worked for a while. I think Becca has tried something like motivating phrases pinned up etc. You could try going through magazines and cutting out some lovely clothes and pinning them up somewhere. Before I lost weight I really had lost all interest in fashion and had no idea any more what would suit me. I just used to cover myself in baggy black. I had to re-educate myself in what was out there. It was quite a shock to realise I didn't have to wear dark wrap dresses any more, but I could wear a bright sheath dress! Wow! Going to the pub this week in a sleeveless top, heels and a pencil skirt was quite a milestone!
Love Heather UK
By the way Di, in case you were wondering, I am going to be 67 in October.4 -
Chris in MA – What kind of job do you have that takes up so much of your time? What’s more important to you, money or a relationship that might survive if you did not have to spend so much time there? I sure hope you are getting paid for anything over 40 hours a week. My DDnL#1 was putting in a lot of extra hours and it was a ‘full-time’ job. After her boss said, ‘everybody is being ‘bitchy’ today’ she asked if she could take her ‘lunch hour’ then (she was about to ‘lose it’. He told her ‘no’; then she asked again and threatened to take it anyway. So she walked out; and he told her ‘if you leave; don’t come back’. She did BOTH! It hasn’t been easy for her to find a job that will pay her enough to afford ‘health insurance’. Or try to find a job that will offer it, or pay for a portion of it. She took a job at the RYDC (a state job); but, not happy about the pay; but, ‘if’ she has gotten a foot in the door; maybe she’ll get a raise once she proves her ability to do the job. She only has a HS degree; and, most that have been posted at the Labor Dept., require ‘some college’. If they give her a ‘timed test’ … she freezes up. She even called and asked for my ‘input’. She said, ‘I guess you never thought that I would EVER ask for YOUR opinion about anything. That’s true; she told me about the job and the pay; and, I told her that anytime you apply for job; it is probably going to pay you anything over ‘minimum wage’; but, a ‘bird in the hand is better than 2 in the bush’. That doesn’t mean that you have to stop looking for a job that pays better and has the necessary benefits y’all are looking for.
The job she walked out on, did not pay her over-time. She worked for a ‘salary’. I had told her once before that she should make sure she turned up at ‘opening time’ and not let the door hit her but at 5:00pm; even if she still had work to do … it’d be there anyway. They only paid for one week of vacation, and she had worked for them for 12 years. No benefits; and, if she took off for being ‘sick’ or one of the girls being ‘sick’ or going to a ‘school function’ she got ‘docked’ for it. I don’t think she has had a ‘bad migraine’ since she left the job. Now, they are having to figure all of it out, even how to ‘work the phones’. Several of their clients she had called and asked why there could never get a call through. She told them she did not work there any longer. She refused to sign a ‘no compete clause’ because she was not leaving the job for one like it. But, she has referred some of her clients to anther business.
IF they are NOT paying you for ‘over-time’ (which is the ‘law’ in GA); they have to do so; you are only expected to work 2080 hours a year. They are supposed to pay you over-time anytime you work over 40 hours during a week. In GA if you work on a Saturday or Sunday (when your week doesn't change from working M-F); they are supposed to pay you time-and-a-half; working holidays - twice the hourly rate. Regardless, even 'if' you work Thursday through Sunday they are supposed to pay you overtime if you work over 40 hours during that time. Some people work 10 hours; but, only 4 days during that time; for their 40. Some people 'share' their days with another - working just 1/2 days. Again, if they work over 40; they are supposed to be paid over-time. IF they do anything … such as firing you; and, even ‘if’ not; still don't pay you overtime … you can prove it to your local Labor Department … you might lose your job; but, the chances of getting 'back pay' is possible. The Labor Department does NOT look 'highly' on employers basically running a 'sweat shop'. But, you could probably get all of your overtime if you took them before the Labor Department and tell them how many hours you have worked overtime. I hope you made a copy of what you showed to your boss, too! If you are ‘working’ for a salary … that might be different; but, like I told my DDnL#1; the door would not be hitting my fanny at closing time. That would be something you’d need to ask the Labor Department or an attorney (most of them will allow you a “free consultation’. It seems like you have already gotten the ‘documentation’ to prove it, too. I don’t know what the ‘law’ is in MA. Here it is ‘taking advantage of a worker’. The same thing as running a ‘sweat job’.
KarenE – I have a two-piece that has the long top; and, I ‘step’ into mine; for me it is easier that trying to pull it over my head; then I pull the bottom over the top. It is a tight-fitting bathing suit; has a underwire bra; but, at least it covers everything like I want it to. I still have a bit of a ‘belly’ and I am ‘trying’ to ‘hold it in’ when I am exercising in the pool. Yesterday, for some reason, I have no idea how it happened, the bra got turned around (or should I say one side did). I got my husband to help me, try to figure out what I did. Got it back like it was supposed to be. I have a ‘long torso’ one piece; but even it won’t cover my boobs and I have to keep pulling the neck up.
Kymarai – One thing I would like someone to tell me how to do it; is posting pictures. I ‘finally’ got a picture of “Cracker” laying on her back. She’s been so funny this last couple of days playing with her toys; and, running back and forth through the house. Throwing them up and catching them.
Kylia – Good on the loss! It’s better to lose it slowly. Men are just men … they have ‘no clue’ about things we just want them to ‘get done’. Their brains just don’t work like ours. Most of the time, it is ‘not’ that important to them. I am ‘still’ waiting for the freaking door that a carpenter friend of his says he will put in and not charge us. I keep asking about it; now to the point of ‘nagging’ him about it. He keeps telling me that the guy is ‘swamped’ with work. So, then offer to pay him! Tell the guy that I am ‘on you @$$; and, then maybe he will understand that I want to be able to use the room’. It’s nice out there in the morning; but, can’t keep the door open to the MBR in the afternoon because of the heat. Need to insulate and put up some sort of finished wall and figure out what we want to do to the flooring. At this point I am willing to ‘just paint it’; but, that will mean a good bit of caulking and sanding. GGrrrrr!!!!! Find a friend that has knowledge about how to ‘fix it’ and then do it and rub it in his face. Maybe, then, he will get out there and help y’all.
Frankiesgirl21 – We laugh that our property must have been used to film “Moses”. We can sit out on our porch and see clouds coming our way; then they part and go south towards Dawson and north towards Americus. It can be sunshiny here and rain ‘cats and dogs’ in Lee or Dougherty county. The other night DH and I were sitting on the swing and we watched the rain coming towards us; the wind was blowing sideways the trees were swaying really hard; but, it was fun to sit out there and watch it. Did not thunder … which was strange; because we had been having some really HOT and humid weather during the day.
SugarDarlin – I worked in a ‘deli’ when I was going to ‘art school’ and the first couple of weeks I think I tried EVERYTHING … after that it lost its appeal; but, some nights I take home a sandwich and a couple of sides anyway. Really like the ‘carrot salad’; but, had to pick out the raisins. I don’t like raisins at all. However, I love grapes!
Keiki – Sounds like when you are being ‘prayed over’ … hands up and pointing to the sky (Heave). Sometimes one will actually touch your forehead during it. It’s done at our “Women’s Retreat”. Thanks for answering the question.
To the lady who posted that her ‘wedding set’ is in a safe; I 'd have to agree … seems to ‘defeat the purpose’ of getting it. It was given to you as a ‘token of love’ … be proud of it. If it is an heirloom; then take a close-up picture of it … and if it is stolen or lost; then you would be able to show a jeweler what it looked like; and take the 'insurance settlement' to have a ring (or set) designed the same or something more contemporary if that is one of the reasons you put it up. I had a ring from an old boyfriend; that, I lost and I really wish and hope that it is in some box we did not open when we moved here. It was a beautiful ring and very different. I have also had my “Chinese Warrior” also go missing. I’m sure when I find one, I will find the other. If someone was to tell you to ‘take it off and give it to them’; stay as calm as you can be and laugh and tell them ‘that it isn’t really a diamond or whatever kind of stone it is … it’s a ‘FAKE’.” Or better yet; when someone approaches you for any reason, turn it around so it doesn’t show. I do that whenever I go somewhere and fly. I’d suggest getting it appraised and added to your homeowner’s insurance. The appraisal will cost more than the minimum amount it will cost to insure it. I think I paid about $100 to have mine appraised. I had mine appraised; and, was very shocked at how much it is worth; and it only costs me $8 a month to insure it. I have a 3-diamond ring that is an ‘heirloom’ and I wear it on my pinky finger; I have a NSV with it, because it is just a little too big; and, before I had to use lotion to get it off. But, so far, it still sits in a groove on my finger from being overweight. I might end up having to have it sized; but, I will need to have my DDnL#2 try it on, because I have ‘promised’ it to her.
But, if it was given to you by another husband or 'significant' other ... I would have it re-set or made into a necklace.
This morning I was watching ‘synchronized swimming’ and remembering doing it when I was younger and we had swimming, diving, and other things to do in front of crowds from around my home town and a few other towns in the area. I swam and dove competitively and once during practice; trying to do a Gainer-and-a-half off the high dive; which is when you ‘jump out and do a complete back flip back toward the diving board and dive into the water’. In competition, the closer you got to the board got you extra points. I hit the board during practice one day and it knocked me out. My boyfriend was in the water as soon as I hit the water. I took a couple of days off; then he made me ‘go back up and do it again’ … like falling off anything (bike, horse, skates), if you DON'T get back up on it and do it, at least, once … you’ll never do it again. I did it; but, I was not happy with him!!! I almost ‘tossed my cookies’ climbing up the ladder.

Lenora I don't know if this will work the same for you as it does for me, but there is an icon above my posting box that looks like a piece of paper with a corner turned down. When I click on it, it gives me the option of dropping an image or file, choosing a file, or entering a URL. I will post a picture here using the "choose a file" option (two of my little doggies - these two happen to be full sisters but 3 years apart in age): Mabel & Molly

We are in Fargo North Dakota for a couple of days because of my DH's awards dinner tonight. He is in meetings all day today. With his long hours and hard work he does earn a lot of awards. That is the only perk for the extra time that he puts in. Tonight will be a time to dress up and have a lot of fun with the other people that he works with. Prime rib is on the menu for tonight. Of course I brought my kettle bell along so that I can get my exercise in! I would never go anywhere without it!

Just wanted to tell you my experience. I'm sure it doesn't work for everyone.
My spouse said the same thing about dogs.
I told him leave if you want then. I love dogs and will not have a life without them.
This is my life too.
I got 1 big dog and then the next year another med sized dog. When the first one died he cried just as much as I did. I then got a third dog this time a small one which he really didn't want a small dog. He now calls the small dog his dog and he walks both the dogs every day. After the first one died he really changed his tune and loves the dogs. He sits with the small dog under his arm a lot.

Hi I'm Diane new to the group. I'm having a hard time lately with losing weight due to socializing & vacation time.
I'm 50 and find it hard seeing all these young people working out constantly when I'm exhausted after work and just want a nap. I don't have that energy. I'm not a morning person so getting up at 5am in not what I want to do to work out. Tried it and it just didn't work. I have lost 22 pounds but that took me a year to do. Now I'm losing motivation. I gained back some weight over the month of July. I signed up for a learn to run clinic in Sept. I hope that can get me back on track. I've never run in my whole life. This will be weird starting at this age.3 -

A myfitnesspal friend named Susanna posted the link below today. I followed her link and then checked Webmed for confirmation. As a result I've decided to make a change in my daily supplements. I'm not taking Citracal again. As I understand it the calcium & D3 are not the culprits but other substances used to make the tablet are. I'm not medically trained, so you should read and reach your own conclusions. Here is what she posted:

My fillet steak was ............. FABULOSO! Di - You can reward yourself with food if you choose the right food. I have learnt how to cook it perfectly from watching cookery programmes. QUE RICO!
Don't forget to deprive yourself of things you enjoy if you don't keep to plan. No coffee or sitting or chatting unless you've earned it. :noway:
