Reached goal and didn't notice!
@juliet3455 Thanks. It was the anniversary of the first time I'd run voluntarily.
A year ago, when I was 48, I was walking round the lake and felt an irresistible urge to go faster. I ran 500 metres, and was absolutely knackered, but was totally hooked.
In the past year, I've run 41 parkruns, lots of middle distances, and three half marathons.
I celebrated my runniversary by running with my friend Narelle. We ran 1 km for each of these 12 months. It made me very happy.
Since we're posting pics of ourselves running, this is me on my runniversary on Thursday:

It was a very busy day in the forumn. Multiple edits of @kristinegift Photo, all great for inspiration.
@RespectTheKitty I am from Northern Alberta ( Crazy Canuck ) and we run all winter, Trail Shoes, Polypropylene liner socks and Smart Wool Socks. The Poly socks wick the moisture away to the Smart Wool and the Smart Wool wicks it away. The heat from your body helps in wicking the moisture away. As for Traction Aids I found some Slip on's that have Tungsten Carbide Spikes. They dig into the ice like crazy but are small enough that when you hit a hard surface ( pavement-concrete ) they seem to push up into the Sole of the shoe as I don't notice any pressure points/discomfort from them. Just never try to walk - run on any area with decorative Ceramic Tiles ( inside/outside ) - instant Skating = crash and burn. I will see if I can find a model / version and post them.
@7lenny7 Can't offer any comment on GoreTex Uppers-Slush guards as we go from Fall to Winter with no real - Slush Season.
@ariceroni Hang in there - you have very little time left before you will be able to lace em back up. After my torn calf this spring I did a lot of short exploration/test runs. 1/2 km walk - 1/2 run - 1/2 walk so as not to push to fast/hard and risk re-injury.

10km Roots and Ruts Trail Race. On some Deliciously Insane - Muddy - Swampy - Narrow Single Track.
Yea I had Fun - even though I did not have a spectacular run.
This is some of the Sweetest-Gnarliest trails I have Ever ran on. It makes @kristinegift photo look like a paved 6 lane Track. That's saying a lot since I did a Run this summer on the Emperors Challenge HM the week before the official race. Emperors Challege pdf map.

Excuse my self-indulgence, please!!
Comparison between my first parkrun, 50 weeks ago, and my one year running anniversary on 22 Sept 2016:
You can see how much of an effort it was at the start, but newbies, it gets easier. And I managed a 10K PB on Thursday! Running never ceases to amaze yourself.
Apologies for my introspection.
To make amends, I send my heartfelt best wishes and encouragement to @MNLittleFinn and @KatieJane83 for their Half Marathons today your time. So excited for you! Please give us a recap when you're done. Love race recaps!

@Orphia You have made so much progress! It's been really fun to see your mileage steadily climb and watch as you join the Crazy For Running club1

Will catch up on posts when I'm on the train later, just a quick update. It's looking ominously like I might actually meet my goal for the first time in 3 months!

07/09 3 miles, I'm going to call it a recovery run as that's what it was for me!
08/09 3 miles Its was really windy so when the wind was behind me it was like running on air but when it was against me it was like someone was pulling me backwards. Still better than too hot! I can feel my ankle improving.

@Orphia - fantastic progress pics. Awesome job in one year. You must feel incredible.
You and I have very similar stories (and ages!) and I just passed my 1st runniversary (mid August, don't know the exact date). I thought I'd never willingly run ANYWHERE let alone actually train for a half marathon. Crazy. Running is an amazing thing.
It's dark and 42 degrees F out and I'm getting ready to go on my last long run before taper time. I'm so excited the cooler weather is here! It's supposed to be an absolutely gorgeous fall day here. I need it - work has been a stressful pain in the *kitten* the last couple of weeks and I'm barely keeping my head above water. Bring on a lovely fall weekend and maybe I can face another week.2 -

Bad news: little man kept waking me up throughout the night and decided o550 was wake up call
Good news: there's a shuttle from the hotel, either to the high school where the busses leave for the starting line, or to the starting line. I don't have to walk through drizzle which means I can just wear my shorts and shirt.3 -
@MNLittleFinn Good luck today, not that you need it. I reckon you've got a sub-2 coming your way!
@KatieJane83 Good luck on your HM too.
@Orphia Those progress pics are awesome, you've done amazingly!
@kristinegift I wish I looked that majestic when I run, that's an awesome photo. I've never managed that sort of photo for Instagram, I stick with photos of my feet and blurry mid-run selfies. #millenialproblems
@7lenny7 Great pics, rainbows are my favourite thing ever. My grandma believes that when she sees a rainbow it is my late grandad watching over us. She'll be annoyed he was watching you run and not me1 -

@juliet3455 Sounds like your race was crazy and a challenge. Awesome job!1 -
@emmab0902 I can't even begin to imagine how hard/strong you were kicking to do that while swimming. I use swimming as my exercise/recovery when I strain something running/curling/biking. Had been feeling this week like I've been a slacker this week (not running as much as I should), so I decided to make the long run really long - wasn't sure HOW long, but I was also trying my darndest to keep it SLOW, so when I got to 10ish and was feeling good, I decided I could make it a full half. Not my fastest (13.27 at 11:43 avg pace), but I did it. Kinda proud of myself right now.5

That was quite the run! Started at 5:30 with 4 other ladies in my running group and we set out on the tow path in the dark, headlamps aglow! We kept the pace nice and easy, with some walk breaks as needed, and we were chatting basically the entire time. Two people had stashed water/Gatorade along the route at the 6 (and 12; thanks loop!) mile spot and at about 8.5 miles and that was a life saver. It was really humid, so the Gatorade was amazing. I drank about 12-16 oz of that and then about 16 oz of plain water and took 1 gel and I was totally fine energy-wise. My ankles are a little sore from some rough rocky terrain on the tow path, and my lower back hurts from a mile of steep downhill, but other than that I feel good! Much better than my long run last week which was a total struggle physically and mentally. And this will be a new weekly mileage PR for me, so I'm surprised - but pleased! - that my legs are holding up!
Plus I managed about 4.5-5 hours of sleep last night desptie my housemates' party, so I'm not nearly as run down as I anticipated feeling. Still going to take a long, hard nap this morning though. Followed by a pizza party for 1. Or a giant cheese burger. I can't decide which sounds better.

9/24 11.0 miles
Last long run of the training for my goal half marathon done! Today's run felt SO much better than last week's "trial" half marathon race that I know believe again that I can do this. The weather was pretty perfect. I ran with my good friend who will be doing the half with me and we chatted the whole time which made it much more enjoyable. I started out feeling rather stiff but after warming up felt good. Unfortunately my friend started having some knee/leg pain and had to walk for some of it. I went out ahead and then circled back for her and she was running again. She had been feeling pretty optimistic about the half, and now she is a bit disillusioned I think. I hope she'll feel better and be able to run the race comfortably. Neither of us in trying to be fast, but I would like to do better than my trial race, and it should be doable based on how I felt today.
And the taper is officially on! Only easy base runs on the schedule for this next week. I'm really looking forward to cutting back. I think my body and spirits could use the rest so I can be fresh in two weeks. I got tickets for a food/beer festival that happens 4 days before my race - carb loading!!!!
Sending out good vibes to our racers today! Good luck @MNLittleFinn and @KatieJane83 and anyone I missed who is racing today or tomorrow.
Great runs @9voice9 and @kristinegift - way to go!!! I vote for both cheeseburger and pizza.2 -
@ MNLittleFinn and KatieJane83 I know you will run great today:-) Good luck and more importantly, have fun!!!!1

I just started running the beginning of August so this is all new to me. I've been running about four days a week. As a newbie I haven't been running far so set my initial monthly mileage goal at 40k for the month. I had to up the goal to 80k, and have already surpassed that.
Ran my first 10k race (actually my first chip time race ever, at any distance) this morning. I had 3 goals:
1. Run up the big hill near the end without stopping (big hill, for me, in the last km)
2. Run the whole 10k without having to walk
3. Run negative split, because I usually start faster than I should and run out of steam.
I accomplished all 3 goals, and ran the race in 1:05:23. I get to count this as a PB since it was my first race.
Here's me with my victory pose, and all the race bling that was part of the race kit. Oh, and I have officially registered for a HM in my area in early November. Oh god it feels real now!!!

Good luck @KatieJane83 and @MNLittleFinn .

@kristinegift being that you're in NJ, my vote is for pizza, as long as it is real NJ pizza.2 -

Today's notes: Ran the Boundary Waters Bank HM in Ely, MN today
Official time was 2:01:09, gun only, no chip reader at the start. That said, According to my Garmin, I only ran 12.8 miles. I have an Email and a Facebook message sent to the Organizers to get some confirmation before get slightly depressed or do a happy dance, depending on their response.
The race started well, I stuck with the 2:00 pacer, but 6 of the first 7 miles, we were faster than 2:00 pace, with three of the splits under 9:00/mile. At about 10 miles in, according to Garmin, we made a turn to the ENE, and I just got slammed by the 10-14 mph wind that was hitting me straight in the face. I ended up taking quite a few walking breaks (again!!!) because I was pretty fried by the headwind. Good news though, it was just tiredness, not my HR going crazy and pounding in my chest. Speaking of HR. My monitor kept slipping down so I ended up taking it off and shoving it in my pocket for the last few miles.
Thoughts on the run: I'm slightly disappointed, though only slightly, with my performance. My little man kept us up until close to 2300, and decided that 0545 was a great wake up time. This on top of the mild head cold I have, made for a tired run. I also was ravenous after the run, so better fueling, and possibly having more caffeine than the little bit in my NUUN would have helped.
The walk breaks, and possibly short course, put me in something of a bind. I was hoping to use this race to help me decide whether to sign up for the Full, or HM on my anniversary next June 17. I told myself that If I could run it in under 2:05, without walk breaks, I'd sign up for the full.
The distance discrepancy has me questioning my time, and, of course, I took some walk breaks. My geeky side plugged in my Strava 10 mile and 20K (Both PR's according to Strava) times into the McMillan calculator, for estimated HM times, based on the assumption that it was a short course. Both of the estimated times were under 2:05.
Part of me really wants to still sign up for the full, having a June 17 Full would be great motivation to keep running over the LOOOONNNGGG Northern Minnesota winter, but (according to my watch, and my walk breaks) I didn't meet the goals.
Looking for some advice on what the Marathoners think. I would NOT be running for a specific time if I did the full. It would be an "I ran a marathon" kind of thing. What ya'all think? Just go for the full for the experience, or stick with the half? I really am torn on this.......5 -
9/01 ..... 3.2
9/02 ........... Rest
9/03 ..... 3.3
9/04 ........... Rest
9/05 ........... Hiked 6 miles
9/06 ........... Walked 6 miles with a friend
9/07 ..... 2.3 Easy run then walked, DOMS was a little much to ignore
9/08 ........... Rest
9/09 ........... Rest
9/10 ..... 3.2 With DD. She walked a little more than last time but I am still happy with what she put in.
9/11 ..... 5.0 With DH. I was a little surprised with the pace: felt easy at ~10:30 min/mile, it was usually 11-12 for me
9/12 ........... Rest
9/13 ..... 3.1 With DH again. It was later at night and we wanted to get it done. We ended up running more like a tempo speed. I threw in a fast (for me) finish thinking, I probably wouldn't be able to run fast for next few weeks after the blood donation...
9/14 ........... Rest - donated blood today. Will focus on having more iron rich food and hope the run tomorrow would not be too much of a suffering...
9/15 ..... 3.1 Ran too fast in the beginning. I need to work on slowing down again...
9/16 ........... Rest from running. Did some bodyweight strength training again, finally
9/17 ..... 3.3 Family/Group run
9/18 ..... 2.4 Wanted to run 5~6 miles but my legs (mostly left leg) felt really tight which I assumed was from the strength training on Friday and possibly a lot of standing the day before. Half way through, DH wanted to stop and I gladly agreed...
9/19 ........... Rest
9/20 ........... Walked 5 miles
9/21 ........... Rest
9/22 ..... 3.2
9/23 ........... Rest
9/24 ..... 3.3 Family/Group Run
Total Miles: 35.3
A small group today. One of the new-to-our-group friend said she had to stop running for months earlier this year due to hip pain. Her PT said it was due to her weak core. Made me think that I really should focus on strength train more and be patience with increasing mileage. Having said that, I think the 6-mile "long run" tomorrow should still be okay
Another note, I start to really enjoy running with my 7-year-old. It used to feel like a drag, even during the time she actually ran... because 1. she was so slow (not blaming her, she was even smaller then and she definitely put a lot more effort than us for the same distance) 2. she is such a chatty box. I thought 1. I could have run faster without her and really trained at my speed and 2. she could have run much faster if only she would stop talking. But now that I am on here much more and learned the benefits of slow running, I start to appreciate the slow running and the conversations. It is also comforting to know that her natural preference to carry a conversation while running is actually good for her.
