September (2016) Running Challenge

I can't believe it's almost the end of September! Mind you I noticed the drop in temperature today, it seemed to time itself quite nicely with the Autumnal Equinox (who would have thought it?) Anyway, colder weather shouldn't be an excuse, I had a change in scenery and ran a 5K around the velodrome in the Olympic Park. Great conditions and a nice turnout where I somehow managed to beat my PB by over a minute! A nice medal and an additional core workout (still feeling it) concluded a productive week, looking forward to the October challenge already!

@skippygirlsmom So sorry to hear about your loss.MNLittleFinn wrote: »My students' attitudes and behaviors today are making me want to run really bad, but between my quads and my cold, that's just not going to happen.
This is exactly me right now. My day was a battle and I desperately want to run but I have a cold too so I'm forcing myself not to. Horrible, germy children!
@dowelahmed I'm running the velodrome race, but the HM option, in December. Is it any good?
Congrats @Ohhim, @KatieJane83 and @TattooedDolphinGirl78 for some awesome racing this weekend! Smashing it2 -
@dowelahmed I've been looking at the velopark races - thinking about doing either Nov or Dec. Would you recommend it?
Edit: @louubelle16 - didn't see your post. May see you there in December! I'll probably only do 10mile - not sure I'd be HM ready by then although it is tempting!1 -

Trying to catch up, but so far behind I am just going to read about this past weekend. Sorry,
@Orphia - Wanted to do the actual Beat the Blerch! I love "The Oatmeal"! Also, great runniversary pic!
@ceciliaslater - Be careful...protesters can change in an instant.
@Azercord - "Embrace the suck" is on my RunID! Love it!
@HonuNui - Puppies and rainbows! The perfect life!
@MobyCarp - 177 laps?!?!?! Wow! I thought I was going to die doing 50 on a 1/10th mile indoor track.
@ariceroni - Sorry no running yet. You've been kick *kitten* on the bike, though!
@jodilynnsanders5104 - Great time! Way to crush those goals!!
@MNLittleFinn - Congrats on the HM! I have never done a full, so no advice from here on whether you should register for one. You have come really far in a very short amount of time! Also...I think everyone looks older than their age in post-race photos.
@KatieJane83 - Awesome HM! Way to kick *kitten*!
@Ohhim - Wow! That is crazy awesome! I can't imagine doing even one of those things in Augusta, let alone all three!
@skippygirlsmom - Sorry to hear about your Mom. Will pray for you and Skip.

9/01 ..... 3.2
9/02 ........... Rest
9/03 ..... 3.3
9/04 ........... Rest
9/05 ........... Hiked 6 miles
9/06 ........... Walked 6 miles with a friend
9/07 ..... 2.3 Easy run then walked, DOMS was a little much to ignore
9/08 ........... Rest
9/09 ........... Rest
9/10 ..... 3.2 With DD. She walked a little more than last time but I am still happy with what she put in.
9/11 ..... 5.0 With DH. I was a little surprised with the pace: felt easy at ~10:30 min/mile, it was usually 11-12 for me
9/12 ........... Rest
9/13 ..... 3.1 With DH again. It was later at night and we wanted to get it done. We ended up running more like a tempo speed. I threw in a fast (for me) finish thinking, I probably wouldn't be able to run fast for next few weeks after the blood donation...
9/14 ........... Rest - donated blood today. Will focus on having more iron rich food and hope the run tomorrow would not be too much of a suffering...
9/15 ..... 3.1 Ran too fast in the beginning. I need to work on slowing down again...
9/16 ........... Rest from running. Did some bodyweight strength training again, finally
9/17 ..... 3.3 Family/Group run
9/18 ..... 2.4 Wanted to run 5~6 miles but my legs (mostly left leg) felt really tight which I assumed was from the strength training on Friday and possibly a lot of standing the day before. Half way through, DH wanted to stop and I gladly agreed...
9/19 ........... Rest
9/20 ........... Walked 5 miles
9/21 ........... Rest
9/22 ..... 3.2
9/23 ........... Rest
9/24 ..... 3.3 Family/Group Run
9/25 ........... Too Hot
9/26 ......5.0
Total Miles: 40.3
Originally planned to run 6 miles on Sunday. But I did not know that Santa Ana wind was going to visit us and it was too hot (for a spoiled San Diegan) to run so I decided to switch the run for a Monday morning 5-mile run. At 5:30 am, it was 75F, felt hot and uncomfortable. At about 1.5 mile, I was wondering if I should turn west for the 5-mile route as planned, or turn east for the 3-mile route and cut my run short. I turned west. As it turned out, there was a section of cool temperature on the west side. What a treat
@_nikkiwolf_ Thank you. We do hope that this Family/Group run thing could sustain.
@skippygirlsmom So sorry for your loss.2 -
@skippygirlsmom I'm so sorry to hear your mom died, but also very happy that you were able to spend time with her recently....2
-
Aww @RespectTheKitty . I do hope you get in some stress relief running. My work is structured where I can take a moment and just walk around the building. Fresh air, the blue sky and greenery helps click on the good brain chemicals.
Edit haha, I've been off work for 14 weeks... even at home I'll go sit out front and visit my cats or birds or bugs..2 -
It was rest day today but I really want that Strava Berlin Marathon Badge so 4k.
Also public announcement
Strava is giving free shoes for anyone running a negative split in a marathon (US)

80/20 is a very good read - so was Racing Weight - both by Matt Fitzgerald
I found myself just a little intimidated by the 10k plan in 80/20 and ended up using a Hal Higdon plan for the upcoming Fall races. With a better base under me, I may go back and revisit 80/20 for my half training for the Indy Mini in 2017...0 -

If I get it soon enough, I'm hoping to try use it to plan my base running over the winter and build up for racing in the summer.0 -
@ereck44 sorry to hear about your mom. Perhaps your next race you can run in her honour.
@skippysmom I didn't see your post1 -
@skippysmom I didn't see your post but I've seen a lot of notes about your mom. Thoughts are out to you too1

9/26 2.47 miles - slowly, but a little better than yesterday
Still moving slowly. Trying to keep the hips and hamstrings stretched out. I am going to try to go to yoga tonight if I don't fall asleep before getting out of the house.
I need to dial back the eating! I can't stop being hungry.

Between work, traveling for work and traveling for fun I am 20+ pages behind. I am not going to get caight up but have read some of the posts. I won't make my goal for the month but I had a great time running Beat the Blerch with my daughter and having a couple of hilly, recovery runs in Seattle before we headed to Victoria BC for a few days of relaxing. In the 3 days we were there we walked everywhere and ended up at well over 20 miles but I am not counting that in my running total. I took running clothes but didn't make it out for a run while we were there.
Pictures below from the race, being chased by the Blerch, a sign about the couches along the course (yes you could sit down and relax with a Blerch) and some of the the swag. It was fun and crazy with donut eating contests and give aways, cake and nutella sandwiches on the course and beer afterwards. I was sure there would be lots of sick runners but we didn't see too many. The course was muddy from the previous day's rain but we lucked out in the weather department as we had partly cloudy and cool weather. The only issue I had was with the gravel and 2-3in river rocks that made up quite a bit of the trail we ran. The rocks made my feet feel bruised but the alternative, where there was any, was mud. Also I am so used to running at my pace that running at my daughter's much slower pace was SO difficult, it was quite exhausting in its own way. We had a blast though and will likely sign up to run it again. I am hoping between then and now she will develop more speed - maybe she will even have to slow down to run with me
Also we got to meet Matthew Inman (aka The Oatmeal) at packet pickup and running on the course!

Day 8 of no running. The test this morning hurt a different part of the calf, and the test this afternoon made my shin hurt, of all places. Tomorrow I'll ask the PT what the hurt moving around means.
I've noticed this isn't as hard emotionally as previous week+ long stretches of No Running have been. What's different? Oh, yeah. I'm retired. When I was working, No Running was very hard because it took away my coping mechanism for stress at work. Now, no stress at work. It's an improvement.
Still, I'd rather be running. I'll get there; for the past two days, at least I've been able to walk enough to get my 12K steps in.5 -
Yes, I did have my emergency stress run this evening. And I killed just about every PR I have. I was consistently under 12 minutes per mile for the first time. Ran 5k in 35:50 and four miles in 47:09, which is way under my previous best. I guess a bit of stress is good for something.
Edit: OMG my hamstrings are sore. I definitely need to take a rest day tomorrow.

@Orphia will you be my personal trainer? Lol! I'll just eat and do what you do the previous day by your diary. Oh wait, I'm still mastering the distance to the coffee maker....
Seriously, thanks for sharing your progress. Very motivating.
@Elise4270 Hahahaha! Thanks. I love having an open diary. I get to shock people.
I'm sure some of the "sugar addiction" proponents would also freak out if they had a look.
I just eat what I feel like, within my calorie limit. This includes making room for alcohol and dessert. I get to eat lots of everything! I don't pay much attention to the numbers, I just try to stay around the limit.
I did notice I'd eaten 11,000 kj (2600 calories) the other day and was still under.
