I forgot I was in this challenge...labor day weekenditus? I did get one recumbent ride in over the weekend.

    9/1 = 24.5
    9/2 = 13.3, 37.8 total
    9/5 = 18.8 on recumbent exercise bike, 56.6
    9/6 = 13.3, 69.9
    9/7 = 16.2, 86.1 <- very hot day, 90 degrees plus.

    Good Luck All!

Think I'm a bit behind for the month, I made up a few miles today going longer than usual which I don't like to do after my weights workout but it worked out okay. I'm two weeks in to my new schedule with work at our store, and I'm not adjusting well. Big difference between 4 days a week 10 hr days and 6 days a week. It's making it difficult to get enough sleep and get up in time for working out and preparing food for my day. No matter what though, I'm determined to keep moving forward and so I shall!

    9/1 - 6.51
    9/3 - 7.06

    Getting dark so much earlier...

@SingingSingleTracker - is riding dirt different than the mtb you did last month? I really want to try some off road riding but haven't had the opportunity.

@JBliss1108 - I have a son and a 50ish hour per week job. I also struggle to have time for my bike, especially now that its getting dark so early... my husband is super awesome and gives me an hour or so on 2-3 evenings per week to ride. Is there anyone in your neighborhood or family that could handle bedtime or baths for you twice a week or so?

@tristramtrent I feel your pain... no advice but to keep pedaling and keep pushing yourself... when I started riding a few years ago, 2 or 3 miles at 7-8mph left me gasping. Now I can go 25-30 and average out in the (v. Low) teens, but I get passed ALL THE TIME. I just smile and set my next goal....

Survived the first day of the GAP/C&O ride a bit tired and sore (as it involved a long slow 100 mile climb), but loved day 2 as it involved a fun well earned 20 mile descent past the eastern continental divide down to Cumberland MD, before hopping onto the bumpier C&O canal towpath. Felt good enough at the end of today's 107 miles to get in a short run (as my ironman is fast approaching), and I'm hoping tonight's rain doesn't flood out too much of the trail for tomorrow as I have another 125 miles to DC, and a karaoke party to get to.

    9/3 - 19 miles
    9/4 - 12 miles
    9/5 - 14 miles
    9/6 - 30 miles (expresso + baseball commute)
    9/7 - 28 miles (errands + baseball commute)
    9/8 - 100 miles (Pittsburgh - Rockwood on GAP trail @ 14mph)
    9/9 - 107 miles (Rockwood-Hancock on GAP/C&O trail @ 15.5mph)

    Total: 311 miles
    Goal: 621 miles
    Remaining: 310 miles

You are all very inspiring. The old saying goes "Its like riding a bike - you never forget". I have just taken cycling up again and its been about 45 years since I did any seriously, and probably 10 years since I did any riding at all. Im not ashamed to say my spangly new bike is a peddle assist bike but there are a lot of hills around me and I would never manage it without. That said it is still a great workout. I am only managing around 7 to 10 km per day....we all have to start somewhere and my challenging part is cornering because Ive done a lot of skiing and learning to lean in to the turns and not out is difficult. Courage.

Sometimes we overlook the simple things. First with a manual powered bike and if you live where it's hilly, you can put the bike in the car and drive it to a flatter area. Cornering? Unless you are in the Time Trial for the Tour de France, you really do not have to lean in or out. Also remember to enjoy the ride

    First ride for September.
45.5 miles @ 16.1mph. Mostly quite a relaxed ride but did try a bit harder than usual on the hills (my weak point). Which is why I got 20 Strava PRs with a slow overall average speed.

Usually I ride solo but did this ride with a really good hill climber, hence trying harder on the hills.
I'm 168lbs and she's a petite 126lbs and I got a great lesson on the importance of power to weight ratio.
(In other words she made me look right a right old plodder!)

Sunday - 4.1 miles to the gym.
Weds - 43.9 miles taking in 3 big climbs.
Friday - 22 virtual miles on WattbikePro power meter trainer.
Sunday - 58.7 miles, same big three climbs but with a different beginning and end route.

Month to date = 174.2 miles.

Weds ride - Three of the big Surrey hill climbs and got one PR and two second bests on them, 43.9 miles and 2500' of elevation on a perfect sunny afternoon. This short hill is plain nasty and hits over 18% grade - highlighted climb on the graph.

Doing your best is all anyone can do!

Inadequate doesn't come into it, we all started somewhere just like you - how many people are you passing sitting at home on the couch watching the "idiot's lantern"? (My Dad's phrase for the TV!)

To avoid having to do too much rushing to get to DC in time for a friend's birthday party, I dug up a shortcut on Google maps for my final day of riding, and found a good trail bypass in MD that took me by Antietam - cutting my last day ride down to a more manageable 112 miles.

Still, the first 15 on the C&O canal towpath were a bit muddy due to overnight thunderstorms, but the warmer temperatures dried out the trail, and I arrived in DC covered in a sandy layer of mud, which was much easier to dust off. Still, by the end my chain was bone dry, and after being passed 80 miles in, I ended up riding for an hour at 16 - 18 mph along the trail to re-pass then totally drop the other rider which left my legs super sore for my hot (90+ degree) final 15 miles into DC.

I definitely felt infinitely better upon my arrival than the prior time I did the Pittsburgh-dc ride in 3 days, as better gear, Chamois butter, and earlier starts to each day helped, as well as my improved level of fitness.

    9/3 - 19 miles
    9/4 - 12 miles

I'm back from Iceland and boy did I miss my bike. I have however crossed "bike around iceland" off my wish list - holy heck I do NOT want to bike around Iceland. Windy, intermittent rain, super narrow roads with 0 shoulder, tons o hills and mountains, lots of gravel stretches even on the main ring road. Saw a few dozen brave souls biking and my heart just hurt. It seems like it would be very stressful.

So I'm back home and trying to get back into the bike and fitness swing of things. No real bike goals this month. Going to try to run 3-4 days a week to prepare for my first 10k in October. And I want to sign up for a weight lifting class. 3 years of cardio only have been pretty good for weight loss, but no bueno for how I look in spandex.

9/10: 19 miles - took the really long way to the farmer's market, and then followed it up with a run
9/12: 28 miles - normal bike commute, although I'm feeling really really sluggish

    Month to date: 47 miles
    Year to date: 2799 miles

So far, I'm really behind on my biking goal this month!
Last week I was travelling for work, and yesterday I skipped my "Monday crosstraining ride", which is usually my longest ride of the week, because I wanted to recover a bit after Sunday's half marathon. I took some detours on the way to work & back today to make up for that a little.

    12.09.2016 13.9 km commute
