Can Men and Women be JUST Friends?

Discuss. And in what context?
Both my husband and I have GOOD friends of the opposite gender, and we're not friends with their spouses (or just sort of generally know their spouses). I've had several people tell me this is a recipe for disaster.
So what do you think? Can men and women be just friends, or is there always something UNDERLYING?

I would have to say Yes. I work with all men where many are my friends and I wouldnt cross that line.
I think as long as you are respectful of yoru spouse and dont give them any reason to worry then you should be fine.0 -
I have 2 guy friends that I have known for 20 and 28 years respectively. Best friends, never anything else. We have spent a lot of time together and on occasion, seen one another naked (granted before any of us were married) . Never been a problem. They both are now married and I know their wives well. The wives are comfortable with our friendships and if they weren't I would respect them enough to back away.
I can go to them at any time and on a few occasions one or the other has been my shoulder to cry on and vice versa.
I obviously think it can work out.0 -

I'm bisexual. Does that mean I can't have any friends and I have to bang them all?
Forever alone and a slut.0 -

Lol, I love all these responses.
This is the third time in the past 2 months that someone has asked this question.
I'm married. I've been with my husband for 15 years. We each have male and female friends. Yes, they can be friends.0 -

No, we can't! We're all sluts who have to do stuff to each other all the time. It's impossible to be friends. Finger friends? Sure. Just friends? No way.0 -

Of course they can, but circumstances and personalities can make it easier or harder. I've known my two best guy friends for about the same amount of time. With guy #1, it's always been platonic. He's a really great friend, always listens when I need to talk, always ready to go out and have a good time, always just easy to be around... But he's a people pleaser, and I'm not afraid to offend. He's significantly less emotional and impulsive than I am. I'm a lot more touchy-feely than he is. We have strongly different opinions on the big stuff like politics and religion. All of those things combined have prevented attraction or impulsive sexuality from ever coming up.
With guy #2, it's a little different... We have extremely similar views, so I feel like he really "gets" me. He loves hugs even more than I do. Our personalities just click a little better. On top of that, circumstances have on occasion led to us feeling very alone and in need of someone at the same time. We've had to "break up" once, when we realized we were behaving too couple-y for people who are supposed to be friends and don't want a relationship with one another. It's gotten a lot easier to be just friends now that we realize we can fall into that trap, and while I'm not worried about things going places we don't intend them to go, I also know we need to make a conscious effort to keep it that way and not follow impulsive emotions when one of us is upset.
ETA: While typing my long serious reply, banging and slutting it up happened. I want in!0 -
This is cracking me up!0
