Thanks for the response! It's interesting since my plan says, "generally performed after a general aerobic run." It could very well be one of those, 'do what works for you', different for everyone types of things, lol1 -
Date Miles Total 10/01 3.1 3.1 + strength 10/02 6.4 9.5 10/03 Rest 10/04 Strength 10/05 4.0 13.5 10/06 3.2 15.7
Got up early to run. About 1 mile into the run, I realized that I had my shirt inside out I thought, at least it was still dark outside and no one would be paying attention. But I did make an attempt to get back home sooner (before sunrise ) by trying out one of the "Speed for beginners without actually doing speedwork" that Stan posted last month. I thought I would try "burst" but I forgot how long we were supposed to hold the speed for. So, I guess what I did at the end was more like fartlek...
BTW, @KatieJane83 you may be able to find your answer from "Speed for beginners without actually doing speedwork" too.
@skippygirlsmom I hope my girl will like running as much as your Skip would one day, right now, if she gets the spiderweb, I am sure she won't run with me next time3 -
@skippygirlsmom - oh my gosh I started crying when I read that skip said she just wanted you to be proud of her. Then cracking up at the stripper comment. I feel bi-polar at the moment. I LOVE Skip!!! Believe me the stress of being an athlete in college is huge. And no matter what the coaches say ( "academics come first!")... it isn't so. As hard as it was getting my daughter through school without any athletic scholarship, knowing so many of her club teammates were not paying a penny, it was worth it for her happiness.
Skip has an amazing head on her shoulders! She will do great!
Had to cancel strength training yesterday because all computers had to be covered up in my classroom to prepare for Hurricane Matthew. Not sure how much good it will do if something flies through the windows ... but since I teach in a computer lab, I had to cover 30 computers, 3D printer, color printer, and the HTC Vive! Then came home and sort of prepared here. Luckily my husband is great at this kind of thing so I didn't have to do too much. I think he bought enough water for everyone on our street!
I was able to run this morning in a light drizzle which was great. I was thinking I'd run tomorrow morning but there is a curfew from 5am Friday - through 7am Saturday. Although, not sure if that is just for driving. It's storming really bad now and we will probably lose power for a day or so (hopefully not more!) but we are ready. We had to cut down all the trees in backyard earlier this year but our neighbor still has a lot of trees so hoping they all stay up. They closed all the theme parks -- that NEVER happens!
Hubby and I decided to have our own little hurricane party and I had way too much wine without eating much. So I should sleep well through the storm. Hopefully all this makes sense...

I wasn't going to run today since I got up at 2:30 am for a 1 hour drive to the airport, a 2 hour flight, and a 4.5 hour drive from Chicago to home... but it was so nice out and after a quick nap I wanted to stretch my legs. So I did an easy jog around the neighborhood to see how bad the flooding was from a week and a half ago (not bad, but still muddy in the park by the river) and how the houses turned out that were being built when I was home at Christmas. And now my parents are going to take me out for dinner to celebrate my completion of my Masters!

Stay safe @ddmom0811 and anyone else in the hurricane's path!
@MNLittleFinn Nooooooo! I refuse to believe winter could happen already!

Today - easy base run, last one before Sunday's HM. My legs felt better than they have in long time so I feel good about being rested up. Tomorrow is rest day, and just a 15 minute shakeout run on Saturday and then it's showtime. Sounds like it will be good running conditions - 48 to 55 degrees F during race time. I was surprised how sweaty I got this morning at 48 degrees though.
And, big news is that I have a potential new running partner! Please meet my new edition, as yet unnamed. She just came home with me today, so we are getting to know each other:
We took a good walk and I think she has promise for doing some running once she learns better leash skills. She's a bit of puller but not horrible for day 1. I'm so excited. I missed having a dog so much.

Assuming it does snow...Trail shoes ya think?1 -
@RespectTheKitty I think I will start with 10 min/mile and over group. I'm running the Schaumburg HM 2 days later so I don't want my legs too tired. However, it would be kinda awesome to run a sub 30 min 5K.2

Trail shoes if it sticks. If all you get is flakes that melt when they hit the pavement, trail shoes won't be needed.
I'm assuming weather forecasts where you are work like they do here, where they forecast 12 out of every 7 winter storms we get.5 -
At 14 miles this afternoon.3

Yeah. There's a winter weather advisory sayingb1-3 inches, but the hourly shows Temps above freezing so we'll see1 -

@MNLittleFinn Have fun in the snow! I sure miss it! I just don't miss the sub zero cold that goes along with living in the midwest.
We're having a "cold front" come through as well!! The high for DFW, Texas will be a chilly 72 tomorrow!!1 -

I never wore anything other than road shoes all winter long last year, unless I was running on a trail.
The first snow usually melts upon landing anyway.
@MobyCarp yes the weather guessers here love to tell us the sky is falling.1 -
Got in 4.1 miles on the treadmill tonight. I'm thinking I want to go back to running in the morning. Waiting all day to run is not something I like very well. I just have to really suck it up and get my patoot out of bed.

@KatieJane83 Your strides sound good to me.
I'm so ready to run tomorrow. May be a wet one.1 -
I'm in for 80. I've got 11.6 down so far, so I might be a bit behind, but I'll pick it up on the weekend.3

mmteixeira wrote: »@juliet3455 @BeeerRunner What trail shoes do you run in? I have done a couple of demo trail runs with the local Fleet Feet to sample different shoes - we have run in the Altra Lone Peaks and Saucony peregrine 6's. I much preferred the Saucony Peregrines of those two
@mmteixeira I think that Trail Shoes are even more of a Speciality than normal running shoes. Like all shoes it will be a very individual thing so my experience may be completely different than yours and - other athletes.
My every day running shoes are Saucony Ride, Saucony Guide and the Mizuno Wave Inspire's.
My Trail Shoes - Ironically are the Saucony Peregine 4 - an older version of the Saucony Peregines 6's that you did a Demo Run in. Love the Tread Pattern and Foot bed - great Traction Uphill or Downhill. They grab the dirt and hang on. Some shoes seem to have a very Directional Tread pattern that are great on Uphills but leave you slip/sliding on downhills. I have tried other shoes but have Duck Feet ( wide at the Toes ) so need the extra room of the Saucony or Mizuno. All my shoes are the Wide version.
I love the Tread Pattern/Foot Bed on the Salmon Shoes but they are just to narrow .
I got a steal of a deal on the Peregine 4 - $50.00 since they were from a previous model year and the next Model Year was being released so they wanted them off the shelf and out the door. I was just in my closet and realize that I need to go shoe shopping - there are only 2 pairs left. Good thing I am going to be out of Town on Training next week
Unlike my Southern Friends I no longer have to worry about Spiders as we have already had 10 days below freezing so they are all in hibernation or Egg cases waiting for spring.
Today when I was near the Alberta-Northwest Territories Border for work I had a Canada Lynx come out of the trees and stop on the road in front of me. Of course my Good Camera was in the back of the Truck and my Cell phone just does not have the lens needed to get a good picture. It made a long tiring travel/work day much better. Generic Photo from the InterWeb thingy.
To all those who might be affected by Hurricane Matthew - Stay Safe - get away inland if you can.
@MNLittleFinn You are late to the party we had 6" last week, its pretty much melted/sublimated except for the North Side of Trees and buildings. Love early season ( winter ) trail running with a little snow to knock down the grass and fill in holes.
@katharmonic Not sure who has the bigger smile in that picture you or the Happy Hound. Garmin should pay you a fee for the Watch Advertising. What's snow?10 -
I haven't had a chance to post for a few days so a quick update on that... Work is crazy (I give up... seems to be a regular/standard occurance these days... sigh). I am running (and showering ) when I can before my day starts, between meetings or at the end of the day if it isn't too warm... most of you know I am a morning runner and this is Killin' me! Also my trainer is off on a ride this week so no training tonight which just makes me even more fidgety!
@ddmom0811 - I hope you are all safe along with anyone else in the Hurricanes path!!
@katharmonic - awesom puppy and new running partner!
@MNLittleFinn - seriously - snow!? in early October!? WOW! Just so you know it will be in the 90s here through the weekend! ugh.....
I will catch up on everyone else over the weekend!

MNLittleFinn wrote: »Anyone have the new Garmin HR Run? My Garmin soft strap HRM is annoying the heck out of me, and I'm thinking about switching to a different HRM.
yes, it works well but in the last couple of months I keep having a small bruise on my chest where the "washing" label is - not sure though is compatible with all the watches
I had to replace the battery after 8 months and it still works pretty well
the only thing that I don't like is the fact that it seems to measure sometimes some spikes at the beginning of a run, especially when it is (I am) cold - my fitbit doens't record that, so not sure if it's me or the strap
I also noticed that sometimes the calorie prediction is completely random (comparing same efforts, same distance, same pace etc), but that's quite rare
the "old" garmin HRM straps normally last for 1 year - I kept having spikes after about 11 months, so I bought a new one, and researching a bit on the web I found that is very common for that type of strap to last for about 1 year - and they are really uncomfortable to wear - I never had any bruises, but it kept falling down the chest, so annoying!0 -
Planned to do 2 x 3.8km session today but just didn't have it - no energy, no motivation, stiff legs and felt like I might do some damage if I continued so did my warm up then about 3/4 of the first interval totalling 3.2k. I have done *lots* of pace walking this week so probably a bit overtired! Have my daughter this weekend so no running and will get back to it Monday.

@BeeerRunner @juliet3455 Thanks for your thoughts
I need to try on the Brooks Cascadia 11. I did not like last year's Brooks shoes with the weave in the tops of the shoes - I found the Ghost 8 very uncomfortable but love my 9's so it may be worth looking at the Cascadia 11.
I will probably stay away from the Salomon because I understand they are narrow (many reviews mentioned the same thing @juliet3455 said above) and the durability of the outside lugs is questionable on the Speedcross 3's (the 4's may be better). I just really liked the under $80 price on the Speedcross 3's...
Ultimately, I won't run another trail until Spring so I will probably wait and try to get the Peregrine 6's when the price drops in the Spring (hopefully ) - from all the reviews I read, they seem like an excellent multi-purpose trail shoe that can handle easy and technical trails, and I like the way they felt when running in them.1 -
10/1- 4.04 miles
10/2- Rest/Travel day
10/3- 3.47
10/4- 5.03
10/5- 3.0
10/6- 5.0
Total: 25.05/60
Today's notes: Another no HRM or Garmin Run, so another z3 run (by how I felt, slowing down is hard without my visual reminders).
And, I tell ya, the snow was a disappointment. Sure it's falling, but none is sticking....it was like running through thick rain rather than snow, and the snowflakes 6 inches in front of my face, combined with the light from my headlamp, made for some dizzy moments.
Oh well. at 21 miles for the week, so I don't even need a long run to keep me in the 25-30 mile range I want for this "off" season.2 -
October goal: 50 miles
10/1: 1.75 miles
10/2: 3.15 miles
10/3: 2.25 miles
10/4: 2 miles
10/5: 2 miles
10/6: Rest Day
Today: 2 miles
Total/October: 13.15 miles1
