BTW, I forgot to stop my Garmin until about 15 minutes after I finished the race. Is there a way in Garmin Connect and/or Strava to edit the end time for a run? I know that I can manually enter it, but I would like to maintain the rest of the data if possible.0
-
@lporter229 you should be able to edit the run in Strava. If you click the wrench, I think you can use the crop option to cut off the part after you finished.1
-
@lporter229 rookie mistake
You can in garmin connect as well. There is a little pencil looking thing in the top right corner.2 -
So many excellent race reports and results and PRs this weekend!! Awesome awesome awesome, you guys!1

Congrats to everyone that ran well today - some even set PR's I see - nice work everyone...
@katharmonic nice work this morning - it was a cold but lovely morning to run in Syracuse ...
I finished my first 10k this morning - the MS Monster Scramble 10K - 1:01:24 - as my first 10k, my main goal was to keep a consistent 10:00min pace.
The 5k and 10k started at the same time so I expected some of the field would go out fast. I was passed by half the field but I actually resisted the flow and held my 10:00min pace right from the start. I quickly found that the course was anything but flat and at the bottom of the first hill I could see the next large hill right in front of me. There were two others on the route, and the 10k was two laps of the same route, so in the end I had 6 large hills to climb. First four miles all stayed just under or just over 10:00m - but the 5th mile included 2 of the three big hills - that mile hurt . Once I got to the top of the last hill the second time, the final 3/4 of a mile was mostly downhill - boy did that feel good - actually almost sprinted across the finish line - very happy with the whole run - held my pace and 1:01:24 was excellent with all the hills...
Actually was very glad I had my Forerunner 235 on, because I checked the actual results and found I wasn't listed anywhere - must be it didn't read my tag somewhere - I emailed the timing company to correct it - but not sure I care as I have the medal and the data from the run...
3 more weeks to get ready for hopefully a flatter 10k - the Burn Run...
Looking back on this season as a whole, I started in January on a Couch-to-5k plan very overweight and with no running experience - very happy with the progress I have made and now very addicted to running...

So far, so good on running 10-ish miles on Saturdays. Looks like next Saturday is the monthly HM day. Although - Saturday wore on me a bit more than the week before - not sure if it was the beltline part (which is all concrete, as opposed to the asphalt/blacktop I'm usually running on my long runs), or the trail part (thru Freedom Park, which was rather hill-ish) or what. My right knee got really stiff, and it was rather sore to bend it, and there was some nagging ache-ish-ness at the back of the knee the rest of the day - today it was fine. Also - I was a bit more chafed in the groin area afterwards than I'm used to - not sure why.
Not a great run yesterday in Atlanta - at least on my side of the equation. We went to see Kansas (the band) Friday evening, and I got up and headed out while SWMBO slept (that's how we deal with the question @lporter229 raised - I run while she sleeps, both on weekends and thru the week). I think she was a tad bit aggravated that it took me longer than I'd planned (aggravated me a little too), 'cause it took me longer (on public transportation) to get to and from the place, and then I didn't maintain the kind of pace I'm expecting of myself, and got a little lost-ish and wound up with 11.2 miles, instead of 10-ish miles. But then we went to see a movie ("Sully" - it's good!) and then dinner and The Opera (Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio" - if you've seen the movie adaptation of Amadeus, then it's the one that Christine Lahti sang, and the Emperor said the "too many notes" line).
If you're in Atlanta, check out the Beltline Trail - it's pretty cool (http://www.traillink.com/trail/eastside-trail-(atlanta-beltline).aspx). Might have to arrange to run some of the other Beltlines too.

I was texting with a group of cycling friends first thing this morning when the wind was gusting maybe 40 mph. And one of them said "oh my gosh a runner just went by" and everyone was replying "what a nut!" This was while I was thinking "it seems safe to run this morning".3

@ereck44 @lporter229 @ohhim @katharmonic and @5512bf Congratulations on the races! So jealous!
@9voice9 Way to go, navigating Atlanta? Did I read/remember that right? We lived in Marietta for a few years, 91-93. Loved it. Was my favorite place that I've lived. But we came from Delaware, so anything was an improvement (sorry northerners- y'all eat some wierd stuff and are *ahem* not full of southern hospitality). Texas before Delaware- so I missed the south. I knew you were southerner. Strava stalker Guess you're quiet sneaking out? SWMBO never wakes asking where your sneaking off to? Haha! HWMNBO? Can I do that? Always asks then wants to see my run, but not really. So I just babble on and on about the minutia of my morning.
Way to be runners. I'm bushed. *High five*
I walked/gimped a few hours at the fair today... Didn't track the distance so I'll make something up later.1 -

Had a friend from our local running club at the Kelowna Marathon ( Supposedly a BQ event )
https://www.sportstats.ca/display-results.xhtml?raceid=40891&status=results&category=Women&lastname=giffin
Looks like she has about a 3 minute cushion based on the Info I was able to look up about BQ times.
Our little club ( 180 members 10-20 consistently active ) was cheering loudly when we saw the result.
The funny part for some of us is that 2 of the local ladies that were cheering with us are actually measurably faster than the lady who made the trip for the run. So now they are planning to ramp up their training and looking for a BQ event close to us. Western Canada/North West USA.
She is originally from Eastern Canada but came out west for a job and stumbled onto our little club when out for a run ( we had our reg Wednesday Night run ) and joined into us. The rest as they say is History.0 -
@Ohhim Amazing race! So insightful reading how you run a marathon.

Goal Description
What I never told anyone - 1:30:00
What I told everyone - 1:33:00
What I told myself just in case - 1:40:00
What I told my parents - I won't die
Result below
Background
First some background. I started running in late December so I run for about 9 months now. I did my first 5k in 32 minutes. My first official 5k was 23 min something with a 10k at 48:28 in April. At this point I got injured from toomuchtoosoonitis and was forced into 3 weeks of no running. My first half was supposed to be in May so that fell of the books and I decided to train for this one from almost scratch. I started basebuilding from 0 in June and got 40 mpw in August while running 6 days a week. I respond much better to frequency than intensity it seems and I felt better than before.
Initial goal for this half was 1:45, that was back in June. I did a 5k in July and got 21:00 so that changed a bit to under 1:40. I did a nother 5k in September in 19:57 so now I was hoping for 1:33. Recently my threshold pace started to feel easier so I started having secret dreams of clocks pointing at 1:30. Maybe an 1:29:59. It helped a ton that I lost a huge amount of weight, like 7 kg
Also I never did a long run longer than 20k. I wanted my first half to be special
Training
I formulated my training from Jack Daniels book and followed his paces and advice. I liked his way to increase mileage a lot as it allowed me to adjust to volume rather than increasing it little by little each week. I also took a week easier every once in a while. Followed his half plan almost to the letter (phase I to III are quite similar for all his plans), even did the back-to-back vo2max/tempo workouts. For 40 mpw, the workouts were challenging but nothing too hard. Hell my friend that ran like 35 mpw did longer interval sessions. I always felt good during the training, excepting the last phases but those paid up tons after. Phase III was 4 weeks long and I did 4 sessions of 1000 m repeats (I did like 4-5 repeats at max) and the usual tempo run (either 20 min nonstop or 30 min broken in mile repeats or 6x5minutes, 3x10 min etc). Phase IV introduced a long mid week workout that rivaled my long run but at much harder intensity (60 min easy, 20 min tempo, 5 min easy, 10 min tempo). Marathon pace long runs helped a lot also.
Pre Race
I decided to bring all my tricks to this one that I have learned over the ear. Start was at 9:30. Woke up at 5:30 and first thing was a shakeout run, 10 minutes long, then a shower and breakfast which included bananas, bread, some meat, and lastly, chocolate (around 700 cals total). Temperatures were litteraly ideal. 6 C (42 F). Perfect racing conditions, humidity at 70%. At 8:00 I was at the race start and warmed up with around 2 miles of jogging and some strides
Race Strategy
The race itself was a little scary. There was a big hill at the start which wasn't a problem now, but the course would loop back at km 18 on the same hill. The whole race had 200 m elevation in total. I secretly aimed at 1:30 so the plan was to go conservatively uphill and recover time going downhill and keep an even pace for most of the race.
First 5k - 21:34
I set my watch to give me 5k splits so I don't obsess about it every km and I can just focus on running. I took a gel with me to eat at halfpoint and didn't eat anything before because of reasons I'll point at the end. I was in second sector because I registred with a time of 1:45 (what I thought then) so it took me 1 minute to pass the start. First 5 km went by smoothly. The plan was to feel good until the last 5k. I catched up with friends on the course and went uphill slow and downhill fast. Breathing was relaxed, no 2-2 paterns and everyone around me seemed so slow because I started a little back in the pack. 5k mark in 21:34, succes I just did my 5k pr from July, now let's do it 4 times
Second 5k - 21:18
Catched up with a friend of mine that also wanted 1:30 and we decided to stick together. This part included a street that went uphill then downhill. There was a rockband playing metal and we saw the Kenyans marathoners cruising at 3:09 min/km (5:04 min/mile) damn they looked so fast. There was a 10k relay guy with them but he seemed to be in trouble. Second 5k went by pretty comfy too and on pace. I hit the 10k mark and watch beeped 42:52. A 10k PR. Yeeeaaaaaa
Third 5k - 21:24
My running buddy drops back saying it's too hard for him and he needs to slow down so I'm left alone. I'm feeling surprisingly good. People start to slow down, it's obviously starting to get hard. It makes me wonder when it will hit me. Pretty soon I found out. I hit 15k mark and bam, this is the pain patrol, here's pain. Breathing starts to get heavy. Luckily they had a water station so I take a bottle and pour most of it on my head. At 42 F you feel the cold and that gave me a boost until a little later. A little grandma on the edge yelled at me that I'll get a cold
Fourth 5k - 21:31
Oh boy it's hard. I can't focus on anything right now, can't even smile at people that cheer me. I pass km 17 just at the start line and go into the last lap. I'm less that 500 m from that big hill at the start and suddenly...I get a side stitch. I can't believe this. I drop from 4:20 min/km to 4:40 and start doing yoga breathing techniques to get rid of it. It goes away just before the hill and start to climb it slowly. I kept hearing around me "oh god not this *kitten* again". At the middle point what do you know. Remember that friend of mine that dropped me at 15k? Well the sly fox passes me and off he goes with a grin on his face. I can't keep up on the uphill so I just focus on my pace and try to follow him on the huge downhill that follows but I lose sight of him.
Last stretch (1.1 km)
I don't know what happened here. I just thought at the finish line and to move my legs. I actually managed to up my pace a bit. Crossed the finish line in a marvelous time of 1:31:53. Last 5k was done in under 21 minutes. I stop and I can't really control my legs. I also want to barf but luckily there is nothing to barf because I didn't eat before the race. Take that bodily functions
Post race
I didn't achieved my 1:30 goal but I would have on a flat course. I'm super happy of my time that I engraved it on the medal.
My friend lost it because he kicked way too soon but he still was ahead of my but I closed the gap to just 7 seconds. 7 seconds that he kept blabbering about every 10 seconds. Obviously he has better genetics.
This marks the first time I run 21.1 km.
I broke my 10k unofficial PR by 3 minutes and set half time that is a few seconds off my predicted VDOT time (but with hilly course).
Not sure if I like it yet. I'm still beat up and my quads scream from all those downhills. It's a different kind of suffering than in 5 and 10k. I wasn't out of breath like you are in those (except for the last 2k) but my legs are much more beat. I'm really happy with my pacing. I was pretty constant at 7 min/miles and never really went too slow or too hard. Considering I didn't get over the half distance in a long run I'd say that's pretty good. Official ranking puts me at 107/2761 in the open
What's next
Rest is next. I'll take 1 week off running because I just finished a huge training block, then a reverse taper and a basebuilding over the winter to 50 mpw at least. The next key race will be somewhere in April or May.

@ereck44 Congratulasions
@5512bf Saw your run on Strava. Nice pacing there you even finished fast in the last 10k. That's how you do a marathon
@katharmonic Good job. You look great after the race. I was a mess
@Ohhim Good pacing you did there. Exactly on point and you never slowed down. Congrats
@_nikkiwolf_ I had a runny nose the whole race.0 -
Did my long run for the week this morning - aimed for 12k at 7min pace and was pretty much spot on overall but pace was a bit all over the place today. Now I'm trying to do runs at particular paces I really need to sort out my music playlists as my speed definitely changes with each song, and at the moment I just have one generic "running" playlist.
Anyway, today's run means I'm still on target for the month:

Today's notes: Today felt really good. There were some twitchy winds, so I ended up hitting headwinds at random points where I thought I should have cross or tailwinds, but nothing too bad. It was a great morning for a run with temps right near 50F. Ran my 5.22 miles in 53:20 for an average pace of 10:14 and only the first mile was above 10:20 pace. Average HR was 147, and I never left z2, though I did top out when I had a coughing fir while nearing the peak of a small rise.
I'm really starting to like the slower running again, I can feel my leg strength, and I didn't feel wasted after the run like I did the first few times I ran these slower z2 runs. This run really got me looking forward to stretching out the distances with the slower pace, it takes longer, but I feel so much stronger. I wish I would have convinced myself before, that's it's OK to slow down, because I can FEEL how these runs help me now.2 -
@mmteixeira great job on the Monster Scramble. Sounds like a tough course - that area is really hilly. But it really was a beautiful day for running. I'm still debating the Burn Run. Right now I kind of never want to run again. We'll see in a week
Great race report @AdrianChr92! Congrats on a great race.
Feeling tired and sore today. I'm making it a work from home day and I plan to head to the Y to use the hot tub later and maybe take a gentle swim. But definitely mostly soaking.2 -

I finally had some free time this morning to check out all the race results and reports...........so inspiring!
@ereck44 @5512bf @Ohhim @katharmonic and @AdrianChr92 thank you all so much for the detailed race reports. I really love reading about your goals and accomplishments with all the trials and tribulations you all go through getting there.
Right now I'm only striving for a 10K next month and my times are very slow, this 66 year old body is still getting used to the demands I'm putting on it and so I'm taking my time getting to even that distance. If I'm honest with myself though I really want to try for a HM next year. I may come in dead last but I'd like to at least cross the finish line.
I'm learning so much from all of you!
I'm beginning to hate rest days!2 -
@adrianchr92 - Awesome race report. Loved what you told your parents. Hopefully they didn't worry too much. What a pace! That medal... did they print those for you at the end? So cool.
@ohhim - awesome report and time! Sorry about your friend!
@5512bf - I’d count the whole Garmin time too! Way to go!
@katharmonic - congrats! Nice picture!
@ereck44 - Sounds like a tough run with those winds. That is so funny that they passed out kleenex. I needed those when I ran in Daytona last winter.
@MNLittleFinn - I love the slower speeds as well. I find I get in a rut of just doing those and then when I finally think "oh yeah, better do some speed work" I love that as well. So it's all good. I guess we should just mix it up!
@Orphia - a kangaroo! That's so cool. Beautiful pix!
Sorry if I missed anyone's race! Good job!
I saw a coyote on my run this morning. At first glance I thought it was a dog, but as it turned to run away I could tell it wasn't a dog. I turned around at that point and decided to not do that particular cul-de-sac.2 -

So, I was checking the results of the TCM TwinCities Marathon for this year, because I knew a bunch of people who ran it. On the website, they already have the days set for Marathon weekend for next year. IF I decide to try for a full next year, that would be the one I run, TCM is amazing for supporting their races.
There's 15 weeks between my target HM, and the marathon. 2 questions, is that enough time to train for a first marathon? and/or, should I treat my whole 25-30 week training cycle as a long Marathon training cycle train for the full, but make the decision to register after the HM?0 -

10/10: Oh my god finally a rest day
Holy crap, I am so tired and so happy I don't have to run until tomorrow -- and even at that, probably in the evening rather than the morning. I woke up at 4:30 central time yesterday (thanks, time zones) and didn't get to bed until 12:30 central/1:30 eastern last night because I am dumb and thought an 8:40 flight (landing in Philly at 11:40) was a good idea two months ago. I emailed my boss when I got home and was like, "I'm going to be in late tomorrow. Like 10-11 am. I'll work late." Slept in until 8:00 when I got up to pee, then slept another hour, and now I feel more human again. And now it's off to Panera to pick up breakfast, then off to work!

Wanted to go fro a run this morning but my alarm didn't go off when it was supposed to and I missed my window before work. Sigh. I guess I should take a rest day anyway after my long run yesterday. But I hate rest days.1
