    10/7 2.85
    10/8 9.00
    Total 23.9

9 miles felt like a million. I am still suffering from fatigue. My legs were heavy and my brain was not communicating with my legs or feet. I am resting now with legs up & took some advil. I need to run 45 minutes tomorrow to make up for my missed run on Monday.

After much review I realized that the last 2 Calf Strains came in my Blue Mizuno's after passing 7 km. They only have 312km and I usually get 450 before starting to feel any ankle/shin discomfort so the calf was un-expected. On runs of 5km or less they never gave me any discomfort of any type. Have placed them in semi-retirement / Yard shoes while changing over to my Grey Mizuno's as my daily shoe. If the calf injury does not come back My Blues will be Officially retired.

I did 3 short runs 1-2 km while seeing how my calf felt. Today was a good day - 6km - 38 minutes. Felt the slightest twinge on the last hill at about km 5 and noticed that where the road /trail camber was extreme I could feel it a little bit. That's when I made the right turn into the cutoff trail and called it a day. Tightened up a little bit but feeling much better than any day this month. And yes I am counting my little short test runs in my Mthly Km's. Any km is a good km o:)

    10/01 – 0.0 km – 0.0 - 140 km – YTD 954.5 km
    10/01 – 6.0 km – 6.0 - 134 km – Strained calf cut it short
    10/02 – 1.0 km – 7.0 - 133 km – Gimpy Calf Said Noooo
    10/04 – 2.0 km – 9.0 - 131 km – Gimpy Calf Said Noooo
    10/06 – 2.0 km – 11.0 - 129 km – Gimpy Calf Said Noooo
    10/08 – 6.0 km – 17.0 - 123 km – YTD 971.5 km

Glad to hear that most of the MFP Runners seem to have missed the brunt of the Hurricane.
Woke up this morning to fresh snow and a power outage.

@johnnylloyd0618 - What a classic Runner's statement - arguing with yourself! We all do that at some time whether in a race or just a little easy run. I did that today to eliminate one hill but then ran a steeper hill later to make up the Km's. Makes perfectly logical sense to a runner at the moment - hind sight not so.

How do you run in the snow? What shoes do you wear? I just have my new balance sneakers. How do you keep your feet from getting wet?

@vs_shine Running in snow and keeping your feet dry really depends on the snow/air temperature and then on your shoes/socks. Most of my winter runs are done in my " everyday shoe ". The only time I get wet feet is Early Fall - Late Spring when we get wet snow. The rest of the year it is cold enough that the snow is dry and doesn't usually melt so the feet stay dry and happy. It has also been mentioned to cover the top of your shoe with Duct tape to make it more moisture proof. I also use a light weight polypropylene inner sock and a Knee high smart wool ( commonly sold as Ski Socks ) over it. The poly wicks moisture from the skin and the smart wool seems to transports it out of the shoe up onto the leg where it evaporates/dissipates leaving a dry foot. It was actually snowing today ( WoHo :p ) and sticking to every thing but my feet were dry and happy.

Seriously considering running tomorrow, just something like an easy 3 miles. Feeling really good after my 7 miler this morning. Only problem is that'll be 7 days in a row.....

I'd like to get back to running consistently, we all know how hard it is to get back to it when you have a long streak of not running and it's a real bummer. I don't want to set a mileage this month just try to run at least three times a week to get back into the swing of things.

Good goal. You get lots of support here

@louubelle16 Been there, done that, didn't enjoy it very much... Hope you had a great Friday night leading up to that hangover ;)

All this talk about snow has got me thinking about crosstraining in winter - I'm already freezing on the short way to work in the mornings now when I take the bike, so don't think long rides are a valid option. I still have a membership at the local gym (the usual story - after four month of struggling, I admitted those weight machines are not my thing at all and stopped going, but the membership is for a year...), so I decided to visit it today and give the rowing machines a try. Turns out using them is hard work!
I did three sets of 5min, with 1min break in between. The first set was the hardest; after that I finally realised I could use dial down the tension(?) from the max setting to some medium number. After the third set I noticed big fat blisters forming on my hands and decided 15min of rowing are enough for a start.
Since today is actually a running day and not a crosstraining day, I went out for a 10km run afterwards. Much nicer! Also, much less likely to give me blisters on my hands. That's why I love running B)

    Daily check in:

This morning I was able to jog my hallway long enough for the eggs to cook. That's good news, though it's still clear I'm not ready for real running yet. I think I'm about in the same place I was in a week ago, before setting myself back last Sunday.

I think I'm seeing progress in the pattern of where the pain shows up, and I'm definitely able to walk farther in one stretch than I could a couple days ago. I'm hopeful that I might be able to run an easy 2 miles along about next Tuesday.

Other than that, I'm kind of monitoring the live feed from the World Iron Man Championship in Kona. I listen the the chatter about the elites, and from time to time check my friend Jim's splits. Last split to show up had Jim 5:11:15 into the race at 59.3 miles into the cycling portion. I won't be able to stay up late enough to see when Jim finishes in real time, but I can probably last long enough to see the first elites cross the finish line.

Ran on the treadmill at the gym yesterday because it was too hot to get outside after work. I wanted to get iin 5 miles and the run felt really pretty good until about 4.5 and then my heel/Achilles started hurting. I stretched it a bit and then pushed to get in my 5 miles plus a cool down. I really should have just stopped. By the time I got home I could barely walk. So no run for me today. My foot was so sore last night even after icing, stretching and rolling that I just turned off my alarm. Heel/Achilles is still very sore but better with more stretching and rolling this morning. It was just dumb of me to push to get past 5 miles when I should have just stopped especially since it had finally been feeling better.

@MobyCarp - sounds like my injury is similar to yours. I am just being stubborn about mine, thinking I can manage it myself. Clearly after yesterday's treadmill run fiasco I am not doing well in that regard. I will be calling my sports doc on Monday morning. Also - I don't know if you have an REI near you but they sometimes have good sales on SmartWool and DarnTough socks and a great return policy so you don't have to mail them anywhere. The socks also show up once in a while on ActiveGearup. I find myself buying them onsale to the point I now have a drawer full of 'spares' and have to hold back from buying any more :)

@shanaber - One of the hardest things I had to learn was to seek medical attention early. I can't claim to have mastered this skill, but I did okay this time around.

No REI near me, but I doubt that any retailer would take back socks I bought 4 years ago for warranty. Fleet Feet takes them back within 30 or 90 days (I didn't listen very close), but after that the purchaser has to mail them to Darn Tough himself. No problem; if it weren't for the lifetime warranty, I would have retired these socks after a few more runs and felt I'd got my money's worth out of them. But it is nice to get replacements.

By the way, I noticed a few people here have Premium on Strava. What do you use it for?

I found an offer for a free 60 day trial and signed up for that a few days ago, but so far, I haven't come across anything that I couldn't live without. Creating a heatmap of all my runs was amusing for a few minutes, the extra analysis graphs are rather similar to what I already head using StravistiX (Chrome browser addon), and I'm not obsessed enough with segments that I care about the option to filter the leaderboards by age etc... Any cool Premium features I am missing, that I should try out while I have the chance?

Ju I Mainly Have It because I like to support thr sites I use. I also use the HR and pace data on it. For me it's just interesting to compare from run to run and compare thr data to what Garmin tells me

@MNLittleFinn I'm so not going to tell you off. I'm a heaping hypocrite!

After telling you you were pushing too hard as a newbie like me, I went and averaged 5 runs a week for a month, and have run 6 times in the past 7 days.

I'm sure you are quite capable of listening to your conscience without my interfering. Sorry.

@Orphia my bed was way too comfortable this morning with 37f Temps and cloudy, I kind of slept in. I'll probably get close to 6 miles if walking in pushing my little man in his stroller instead

@Ohhim Good luck on running your marathon today. Whew! A Marathon....you have worked hard...I am sure you will be successful!

@lporter229 I can totally relate to a husband who thinks that running is more important than he is. I actually had to sneak my runs in after I got off work. It's better now...I just work harder at being at home more in the evenings. So I take a quick nap after getting off work and then a quick run. My husband is more understanding now...but it will come up again, I am sure. He did congratulate me after running my half...I know that he is proud of me. Good luck on running your half. I am sure that you will do well.

@kristinegift We visited the Czech and Slovak museum in Cedar Rapids last June. Really fascinating how the community came together and virtually moved that whole structure to higher ground after the flood. (There is a movie.) My Iowa connection....my sister lives in Coralville, Ia....she is a professor of classical languages at the University of Iowa.

@ereck44 That's so cool! Yeah, the whole community in that part of CR has really come together in the last 8 years and how they saved the museum is really amazing. And it's an even better museum and a more integral part of the community now than it was before the flood.
