14/12 3 miles - there was a full moon tonight, it was lovely
16/12 3.25 miles
17/12 3 miles - very dark tonight and met 8 cars. I have to stop and step to the side as the road is quite narrow and the car lights put me off balance when passing.
Must go back a few pages and catch up on all the posts.

Went to REI to look at trail running packs. Sales person had a genius idea about my bounce issue... look in the cycling section! I looked at and tried on several packs. Settled with the Osprey Raptor 14. Going to swap out the hydration bladder for the Camelback I already have with an insulated tube / bite valve. I won't take it out tomorrow in -20 to -30 F wind chills, though.
In fact, I am falling behind goal too much due to the cold and darkness. I need to get and punch pass for my local fitness center so I can use it on days when I have the need to run, but don't want to deal with darkness or temps. I had better do that tomorrow and get some miles in.1 -
Just managed to pop out at 9:30pm in 50m visibility due to heavy fog which was interesting! Had my high vis cycling jacket on so I felt safe enough from cars etc - more worrying was at times I could hardly see my feet let alone the surface in front of me. Did a short loop around my local shops (i.e. the best lit place near my house!) which equated to 2.37km. Whilst I had given up on my streak earlier in the day, opportunity arose and whilst I was thinking about early night I knew it'd probably backfire as I'd lie in bed thinking that I should have gone for a run, so decided to go for it!
Good news is streak is still on and at moment have no reason why I can't at least get to Dec 30th, (when I have the same problem as I thought I'd have today in that my 3yo and I may be alone all day).

This morning a shorty 3km - 19 mins of hiding from the wind in the trees.
The ambient temp was a balmy -22C but with a nasty West wind 25km/h so the wind chill factor was -42C.
This afternoon -20C and wind has dropped to -15km/h so wind chill is a mild -29C.
Second run as planned for 9km to give me 11 km for the day.

@bmelb1 Awesome and insightful post about your cold weather running gear. I'm so selfish, it makes me very glad to live where I do.

Someone stop me. I've run 12 days in a row. I'm not supposed to be on a streak till December 25!
But today just felt like a long run day. I ran with a friend, on a route I hadn't run before, and it was a beautiful morning for it. It was awesome.

@louubelle - congratulations on your HM PB!! That is an awesome time!
I am at the hotel for my half tomorrow and it is going to be cold here (for us) at the start. Weather is saying low 30s and they were handing out gloves for free at the packet pickup. I know this can't compare to what so many of you are experiencing but for those of us not used to it, it will be cold! I am also hoping to meet up with @mom3over40 and her husband at the start!2 -
Good luck tomorrow @shanaber!!!1

12/17 – 6.40 warmup + Reindeer Run 5K
December total to date – 87.67
Nominal Challenge Goal – 150 miles
Real Goals: Finish transition to healthy running. Use Club Nationals as a learning experience on managing air travel to a race. Build a base toward Boston training. Avoid re-injury
Today's notes – Today I ran the Reindeer Run 5K, to benefit the Strong Museum of Play. I didn't run in temps as cold as some of the hardier members of this group. It was 19° F (-7° C) for my warmup and 21° F (-6° C) for the race, with wind not a major factor. That having been said, today had its running challenges.
It was a late decision to sign up for this one. I wanted to wait until after Club Nationals and see if I felt healthy enough to run a race on my fourth consecutive weekend (assuming Thanksgiving Day counts as the start of a long weekend). Went online to look Wednesday, and found that the price went up at midnight. And the forecast was for wintry weather. What the heck, this one is fun. I signed up.
There was snow overnight. Yesterday evening the radio was full of the "no unnecessary travel" message. Got up this morning to snow in the driveway, snow in the air, and roads that were not yet plowed. As I was driving into town for the race, I wondered what made me think it was a good idea to go out *driving* in this nonsense.
Weather concerns aside, I arrived safely and parked in a garage that the city leaves open to the public on weekends. I didn't want to have to scrape my car after the race. About time for the warmup, I found a friend who wanted a 2.5 mile warmup while I wanted to preview the course. So we previewed the course, though he omitted the last 600 meters or so.
There was snow. It was on the ground, it was in the air. Where roads were plowed, it was a light slippery cover. Where roads were plowed less recently, it was an inch or two. Good footing was rare. Got to the turn around, and found that the Riverway Trail was unplowed for the second half of the course. There were tire tracks to run in, apparently from the truck that hauled equipment for the water stop. Then there was a totally unplowed sidewalk with fences on both sides before we got back to the not recently enough plowed streets. It looked like a stretch of over a mile where it would not be possible to pass anyone.
The warmup was as hard as I've ever worked for an average pace of 8:21 per mile.
Got to time to line up. I lined up right at the front, because I wanted to be ahead of anyone foolishly wearing flat shoes. (I was wearing my trail shoes, which I use to run on snowy roads.) Of course, the young runners at the front took off faster than me; but I didn't see anyone slip or fall down, so I must have stayed ahead of who I wanted to be ahead of.
For an idea of the conditions, I found myself in two of the pictures posted online. The first one is not even a quarter mile from the start, and I'm kind of off to the side; but it shows the weather nicely:
The second one is on the Riverway Trail. I'm having some fun at that point:
I kind of sort of raced the first half of the course. The idea was to survive the second half. It turned out that the Riverway Trail got plowed before race time. Under the snow there was bumpy ice, from people walking on earlier snow. The footing was marginally better where the plow didn't scrape down to the ice, and much better for 6 or 8 steps at a time in a few places where the edge of the plow uncovered grass. Then came the unplowed sidewalk, then some snow-covered roads.
Near the end of the course, an access road to the museum was unplowed. But volunteers had shoveled a path for a finish line sprint. By that time, I wasn't really racing, just running. Ended up finishing the 5K in 23:27, my slowest 5K race ever. But most runners were 3 to 5 minutes slower than a normal 5K in these conditions, so that was good for 29th of 1105 overall finishers and 1st of 30 in the M 60-64 age group.
I was told before the race that over 1500 people registered for the 5K. I don't know how many were no-shows and how many just missed the timing cutoff in the poor footing.
Got a friend to take a mug shot, on the assumption that certain people wouldn't believe I ran in antlers without a picture. (This was before I knew I could find an action shot online the same day.)
A text message told me my finishing time. An email notification provided a link that let me know I'd won the age group. So I wandered over to the awards, to look at the trophies. I was pleased to see that this year, I recognized all the toys on the age group winner trophies:
The tradition is that the age group winner picks which trophy he/she wants. Some of the "more mature" runners had complained to the race director that the picking were slim by the time they were announced; so this year the age group results were announced from "maturest" to youngest. As a result, I had a tough choice between characters. I decided I was more of a Linus type of guy than a Charlie Brown. Oh, and there was nut butter:
This is the fourth consecutive year I've done Reindeer Run, with 3 age group wins and one age group second place. The trophies are getting to be a bit of a collection:
Came home, took a nap, fixed lunch, and got out to shovel the driveway at quarter till 3. Two weeks ago, I ran a 5K and felt the need for an additional half hour of running when I got home. Today, I am content with shoveling snow instead of adding another four miles of running.
I'd like to say I ran this race smart, and deliberately chose not to work all that hard. That was part of the plan; but the reality was simply that the weather mostly beat my competitive instincts out of me. Most of the last half of the course, I was just running to run and not particularly trying hard to finish as fast as possible, or even to run fast enough to not get passed. It was good enough for this race. The weather made up for the lack of winter weather for the Freezeroo 5K two weeks ago.
This is my last race of 2016. I'll take the next two weeks off, before running Freezeroo #2, the 7.5 mile Resolution Run on New Year's Day. During this period, I'll make a decision on going to Bend, OR for the 2017 USATF Cross Country Championship on February 4, 2017. There is some pressure from the club to go, but I need to be comfortable with the budget and the travel time. If I can make the numbers work, I'm inclined to commit to Bend.

Super excited, will also buy clothes on Friday, I don't think I can recycle running clothes right?
But.... It's been 11 years since my last ride! You think I'll still be able to cycle? My plan is to come home, lock in my garage and try it first without locking shoes, then try the locking mechanism, then go out and hope really hope I won't fall down in front of people
Looks nice! You can do it! The falling will happen when you first start out with the locking shoes. At least it has with everyone I know. It usually happens when you are stopping, starting or just standing waiting to go. That's because it is just hard to get used to unclipping them. After a few weeks, you don't even think about it. Hopefully you are in a bike-friendly city.
Enjoy!
@patrikc333 I be fallen several times on my bike. It's always in front of people. Just try to fall in the grass and not hurt your bike!
I think I'm going to die if I ride the road bike on grass!1 -
Miserable day, fog, 1C constantly, frozen ground, mobile dead at 10km from home, completely frozen hands (and I even wore cycling gloves that are supposed to go to - 15) and finally leg cramps. And still not received my new shoes after 2 weeks. What a nice day! I decided I'm not going to run tomorrow, need a break after today miserable awful crappy 17 mils (just realised I run 17 miles, my bad luck number, this explains everything)
On the other hand, Im still able to cycle! I had to lower the saddle, not ideal but even if i lost my dignity at the same time I must take it easy, it's incredible how our brain works and needs to be re train for doing stupid things. Or other option is that I'm a wuss
Tomorrow will try to cycle for 1 hour at least, with trainers. Will introduce clip shoes on tuesday1 -

Today was much nicer than yesterday. It went from 41F when I left at 7 am to 50F at 8 am, and it's not yet raining, so yay! Yesterday's snow is now wet pavement and/or slush which made for some challenging footing. My hip flexor was not at all a fan of the slick crap so I had to stop at 6 miles instead of running my planned 8. But a running group friend who moved to Ohio was back in town so it was really lovely to see her and get coffee afterwards!

Missed a lot staying off the internet yesterday!
I meant to do 10 miles this morning but it was the first real cold day here (39 when I left) and it was a shock to m asthmatic lungs. I got in 3.4 before I gave up. I used my Headsweats ultra band to cover my nose and mouth but the issue was my chest. The spot between the top of my sports bra and the neck of my t-shirt. I didn't wear my vest but I think that will help. I've been back for like an hour and my lungs are still burning a bit.
47.36/1000 -
@orphia - wow, beautiful pictures! Love that motorcycle Santa too. I had the same problem when I started my streak. I was supposed to start it on Thanksgiving, but there was perfect running weather for several days prior... so I just kept going.
@mobycarp - love all your pictures and the trophies!!! So cute! Charlie Brown!!! I am a Snoopy lover myself.
Yesterday I felt sore in so many places. Knee, lower back and on and on. Started thinking I guess I've overdone it (no, not me!) Then I woke up around 2am and felt a really bad sore throat -- like that kind you get the day before you get a cold. So when the alarm went off at 6:30 to get ready for bike ride, I thought I'd be telling my husband... can't do it. However, I got up and it was so weird. I was completely fine. Throat, back, knee, etc. On the bike ride and run I was fine. Both bike ride and run were very slow so maybe that helped. We were just chatting and having a great time.
Reading about you all running in negative temps... I guess I am lucky after all. Until May-October are here.
