One of the most debated topics: Starvation Mode

Does it exist? Is it only for those truly starving or do you think more research needs to be done?
Do you think weight stalls and the body can stop losing weight after only a few weeks of eating less than necessary or exercising too hard?
I really am not sure how I feel about this. I have experienced a time where I was stalled, raised my calories for a day or two, lowered them and then my weight dropped at the normal rate again... Also, zig-zagging my calories seemed to help a lot. It could have just been water weight and a coincidence, so I am open minded on this topic. Share your thoughts. Including anything on how this relates to ketoacidosis.

This should more than adequately answer that question for you: http://www.aworkoutroutine.com/starvation-mode/
If you want to dive a little deeper and more scientific: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/fat-loss/another-look-at-metabolic-damage.html/
tl;dr - There's no debate to it. "Starvation mode" is not a thing in the way people on MFP think it is.19 -
Sigh.
NO.
Starvation is a thing. Visit a country where it's happening. Anorexia is a thing. A long term anorexic is just skin and bones. THAT is what happens when you don't eat enough. Maybe watch a few episodes of Naked and Afraid and watch these people lose 30 or more pounds in 3 weeks...because they aren't eating enough.

There is debate though. I personally don't have an opinion but I see a lot of people who think it's a real thing.0

I know people who believe in chemtrails, and there are people who believe the moon landing never happened. It's pretty hard to debate derp.
There was just a long thread about homeopathic medicine in another subforum, which is some of the derpiest derp that ever did derp. But you can't debate with a True Believer because their mind is already made up and they'll just ignore the volumes of established science which say otherwise.46 -

On your last thread you did not appear to understand water weight fluctuation- that it's perfectly normal and doesn't have anything to do with weight loss. That's OK- not everyone does- but now you want to debate this? You might want to look in the stickies or do a search for previous threads on your topics of interest.13

Just go and ask all the obese starving people in Third World Countries................. Oh wait.11

First of all I do understand water fluctuation. I was asking how to combat it (get the water to fall off quicker)0 -

What a weird article. Why did they insist on the derpy "starvation mode is real" line instead of the more scientifically accurate "metabolic adaptation" they were describing?
Oh, I know. Because it's clickbaity Authority Nutrition.
So once again, the waters are muddied. In the name of bs. Do note it said this under the red headline STARVATION MODE IS REAL:It can make weight loss slow down over time, but it won’t cause someone to gain weight despite restricting calories.
It’s also not an “on and off” phenomenon, like some people seem to think. It’s an entire spectrum of the body adapting to either increased or decreased calorie intake.
Starvation mode is actually a terribly inaccurate term. Something like “metabolic adaptation” or “metabolic slowdown” would be much more appropriate.
Authority Nutrition, proving over and over what a horrible source they are.
Pass the popcorn, you two!

From what I have read and interpret it does exist but your body fat has to drop below like 5 percent for it to kick in. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/81391 read about it yourself. There was a study done by the US army after WW2. look it up and come to your own conclusions. I think most ppl can agree It wont occur in two or three weeks it takes a extreme calorie restriction and a long time period. like less than 600 a day.
For instance my daughter had bariatic surgery and she could only eat 300-600 calories per day for several months but her BF ratio was probably close to 40 percent so the "starvation mode" wont kick until her BF ratio dropped to a certain point. Like others have said "Starvation mode" is not the correct term. So if you have over 20 percent body fat I would not worry. Start getting below 10 then you might want to think about it. Again to your own research from reputable resources. There is plenty of Bro Science.2 -
Metabolic adaptation and adaptive thermogenesis are things. Starvation mode is not.
Not seeing a loss on the scale for a few weeks isn't a plateau or a stall (assuming accuracy of CICO).
There is nothing to debate other than the persistent misunderstanding of how human physiology works.

Yes, this.
Some call metabolic adaptation "starve mode" or "starvation mode," which would be fine except there's this irritating misunderstanding that "starvation mode" means that if you eat too little you can't lose and will even put on extra fat, which makes no sense. It means people worry that they have to eat within some narrow range to be able to lose and that they might not be losing because eating too little.
And yes, of course adding in new exercise can lead to a temporary gain of water weight, but that has nothing to do with starvation mode. I ran a half marathon on Sunday and then flew--darn right I was up because of water weight early this week, but that's not because I was exercising too hard or am in any kind of mode. It's normal.5 -
To believe in starvation mode you have to have no understanding of biology. I use the word "believe" as there is nothing more to this. You can certainly choose to believe in starvation mode, but you would still be wrong.
There is an increasing sector of the population that has no idea how to properly source information and don't understand scientific method enough to understand what information is provable/reproducible and what is not. Most cannot look outside themselves to even entertain the notion that they could be wrong. The process never moves beyond - I skipped McDonalds this week and I gained weight - so starvation mode is real!

Authority Nutrition is a joke. Clickbait woo site which is about equal with Dr. Oz as a reliable information source.
How about this one instead, which discusses it in terms of actual science and biology and stuff? http://www.aworkoutroutine.com/starvation-mode/6 -
No one will ever be able to convince me that someone who is 50-100-200lbs overweight is starving or their body has gone into starvation mode  Their bodies have a lot of fat to live off before they are skin and bone and actually in any danger...6
