Maintenance Check January 2017

Cold, snowy weather can be a real downer for exercise, especially if you live in a place that does not regularly get that crummy weather. I walk around the inside of my house when it gets nasty out. There are lots of exercise videos on youtube as well. Since most of us are on maintenance, I guess we know most of our alternatives to perfect weather4

It's cold, but thankfully not snowing where I live. YES. I am always grateful for YouTube.0 -

My goal was to thoroughly enjoy the heck out of the holidays while maintaining. Looks like I achieved at least one goal! I think I put on a pound or two. I haven't been weighing daily so it might take a couple days to see through the water fluctuations and get an average CW.
Last week my scale weight dropped 3.5lb in 3 days, appreciably greater fluctuation than normal for me. 7-day average was 115.4 but low weight was 114.0. I'm still not sure what starting weight to ascribe (to calculate TDEE ongoing). I tend to put more stock on 10-day low weight, since dehydration isn't a normal risk for me. Lots of factors can contribute to water retention and inflate the scale number, but there isn't anything analogous that artificially depresses the scale number. How do you all establish an accurate starting weight for the year?0 -
Name: Vicky
Total Weight lost: 85-90 lbs (depending on where in my maintenance range I am!)
Time it took to lose: About 1 year
How long in maintenance: Since April of 2016
Maintenance weight range: 123-127. Mid 120s feels good to me.
I've been a bit on the high end since coming back from vacation. I was 126 on 1/2/17 after my vacation, and now I'm sitting at about 127.
My biggest struggle the past 10 days has been I've been fighting some sort of illness. Chest congestion, sinus congestion, aches and pains, a fever on and off. I've tried to work out 3 times in the past 10 days and each time left me feeling way worse so I have been trying to listen to my body and not push it. My calorie intake has been fine, and I probably should decrease it a little bit since I'm not exercising but my body also feels like it needs food. So I just need to get through this sickness and then January should be ok!

Name: Em
Total Weight lost: 70 lbs
Time it took to lose: 2+ years... but only about a year once I actually got serious about it.
How long in maintenance: 2.5 years
Maintenance weight range: 125 to 135 (wide range, I know, but it works for me... usually)
Weigh in..
28DEC16: 139 lbs
04JAN: 137 lbs
11JAN: 137 lbs again - I'm pretty sore from lifting/running/shoveling 7 inches of snow... It'll shift back down to normal, I just know it, damn it.
Success/struggles of the week: This week not only have I been training for a half marathon, helping some friends of mine with C25K and lifting, but we got 7.5 inches of snow over the weekend that turned into ice on my eighth of a mile long driveway. I spent much of the weekend shoveling snow and ALL of Tuesday chipping away at the ice so that I could move my car. I'm so sore I can barely move. Super-success, though. Even though weight hasn't shifted since last week, I put on a pair of size 6 pants that had gotten a bit tight on me and the fit is back to normal (so the lifting is working even if the scale isn't moving). I'm good with it, as long as my clothes are fitting normally again. I suppose I'm not technically in maintenance anymore, since I let my weight shift about 5 lbs outside of my range, but I'm claiming it anyway. This is the first time in more than 2.5 years I've allowed my weight to do that.

Success/struggles of the week: Holiday water weight is likely gone now. Glad to see things going in right direction. Back to cardio and slowly getting on a better food rhythm. Still adjusting to lower calorie intake (was running over maintenance for a few wks) . Another week and I should be on a good pattern to drive down towards the midrange of maintenance weight in a few more weeks. Continuing to do light lifting almost daily so recomp will be happening a bit while running a slight deficit.

Thanks for the reply. Very logical. I'm kind of a data geek and track my TDEE. Body weight is the least accurate part of that equation.0 -

Major Victory, I did not gain any weight over the holidays! I did stick to my eating plan for the most part and did not feel deprived. I would try one bite of desserts if I felt like it, but only did that twice. For the past 10 years I would always gain 10-15 pounds every winter/holiday and then try to lose the weight spring and summer. Getting older I started having a hard time losing my winter weight. I am just now building confidence that I can maintain my weight during winter. P.S. I don't work out, would like to but it just doesn't happen6 -

- Stayed within desired maintenance range (185 +/- 2 pounds).
- Made it to the gym each day for one hour of strength training, one hour of cardio, and a half-hour of stretching (with exception of Sunday, when I substitute a 2.5 hour walk).6 -

Hi Everyone,
My name is Natalie and I hope it is not to late to join the group. I have been in maintenance for about 6 months. I lost 70ish pounds and give myself a 5 lb buffer. I do struggle with anxiety that I will gain weight back and feel a little obsessive at times when the scale goes up a couple of pounds. I know this is not healthy thoughts for me and working hard to work through this and learn to trust myself with living a healthy lifestyle.

Success/struggles of the week: Really pleased that the water weight from the hols seems to have finally dropped (TOM explains why it was so disappointingly slow last week). Back within my maintenance range now, so confident that I'll be able to make the lower end of it in the next few weeks. Getting back into the normal workout routine this week was harder than I thought it would be though - it doesn't take long to get 'un-used' (if that's a word!) to it, does it?! ☺4 -

How long in maintenance: I declared it at 140 last January, but that was too high for a petite lady. So not really in maintenance quite yet.
Maintenance weight range: Would like to stay under 125 at morning weigh-in. Was down to 126.4 after a month of pre-Holiday dieting, but am back up to 127.3 on TrendWeight today.

Success/struggles of the week: Total panic bingeing over the holidays. I still need to learn to trust my body cues, be content with eating just enough, and stop asking food to be more than just fuel.
Same struggles. Life after work is just filled with getting steps and eating food. Really need to make peace with having fewer cals to work with. Contentment and an attitude of gratitude (and maybe a hobby) are the order of the day.

Week 2 update: 119lb
So far I've lost about 23 pounds. I've been in maintenance since just before Christmas. My range is 118-122. I stopped trying to lose at 120, but lost another pound this week. I'm still working on finding the right number of calories to properly maintain. I think I'll increase another hundred and see if that helps.4 -
Maintenance Check-in.
January 6: 136
January 14: 134
I am actually trying to lose as I had gained a good 4 lbs since reaching my goal. I would like to be 128-132, but have found it difficult to maintain there. I struggled when I started adding back, so I'm hoping I can do better this time.
Successes: changed my breakfast two days due to rushing out the door and actually felt more satisfied all day. Working my calories up from a large deficit slowly and still losing. Gave in and got the rest I needed after two nights of working until midnight.
Struggle: didn't get as many steps in as I would have liked. Need to drink more water..

This was actually my only New Year's resolution this year - to get more sleep! I figured that it could go without saying that I would keep on top of everything else, like the exercise, healthy eating, weight maintenance (nothing like a bit of positive thinking, eh?!) - but I definitely need to get to bed earlier!3 -

Yup, it trended up! However, I know it's temporary. Thursday I had my kids' over for soup night. Sodium PACKED plus a crazy number of carbs = water retention. Saturday morning I stepped on the scale and it was 154.1 pounds! Sure don't like seeing the number climb north, lol. Anyway, the number is going down and hope to have it back to 150 by next Monday. The late night snacking I struggled with the previous week is under control. I ensured I had sufficient calories left for a healthy bedtime snack.

It actually worked ok since the weather was terrible all weekend and I wouldn't have been able to get out anyway. I did get some yoga on Sunday and then I am back to it today and feeling much better.
