Hi all, after a month of being sick, and being in rehab after my November half marathon, I was able to run 28km last week symptom free. I'm signing up for 160km for January!
Jan 1 - rest day (ran 10 km yesterday, now post-Christmas cleaning)
Upcoming races:
March 2017 Hamilton Around The Bay 30km

Resolution Run 2017! It's a run sponsored by the local track club and is not a timed race. The course is a surprise and is between 4-6 miles every year. This year it was 4.26 miles according to my Garmin, so right around there. The weather was great and I had some fun people to run with. There was one big hill and a champagne stop at about the halfway point. At the end, there was pasta and chili. A fun way to start the year.
Happy new year, runners!

It's a nice 56 degree day here. Doubt I'll run. Church followed by pizza buffet with the family. And I'll be out late tonight. Tomorrow is 80% chance of rain/thunderstorms but maybe I'll squeeze one in. I feel kinda lost right now like I need a plan but it's not a good time for a plan. Because I'll just get off track and feel bad1

1/1 - 4 miles
4 out of 100 miles
@ddmom0811 glad you are feeling better, taking the extra day is probably a very good idea.
Went to the gym with Skip and we were trying to see how fast she could run on the treadmill. She was too funny she was up to 12 mph for like 10 seconds. We were laughing (when she stopped) and she said "this is why I don't run a 5 min mile, holy crap". ha ha
my friend sent me this today

1/1: 5 miles
I met up with the local running club for their New Year's Day 8k. It was nice to meet up with a group, but boy it was cold standing around afterward waiting for the raffle to happen (and then I didn't even win anything!). I paced with the front group at 7:45-7:50 and chatted with some folks, and the 5 miles flew by. Flying back to NJ tomorrow!
I did my first "resolution" thing today and signed up for my first ever 50k! July 1, 2017. I'm coming for you!
Happy New Year!

January goal: 100 miles
1/1: 3.6 miles (m)
My Total/January: 3.6 miles
Mike's Total: 3.7 miles
Went out for a rare afternoon run today with Mike and Fergus. I was not happy about it. LOL. I don't like running midday at all; it is just not comfortable for me. As usual though, I am glad that I did it now that it is done and I am happy that I started off the new year with a run instead of a rest day.
I signed up for Run the Year 2017. I am planning to run at least 1200 miles and walk the remaining 817.
Have a fabulous rest of the day!

January Running Totals (miles)
1/1 – 10.39 warmup, 7.5 mile race, cool down
January total to date – 10.39
Nominal Challenge Goal – 225 miles
Real Goals: Train toward Boston, working 3 Freezeroo races plus Winter Warrior Half into the training plan. Avoid injury.
Today's notes – The 7.5 mile Resolution Run has become a New Year's Day tradition for me. 2017 is the third year I've run it, though this is the first year I've signed up for the entire Freezeroo series. Forecast for gun time was 33º F (less than one degree above zero C), with winds in the 10-15 mph range from the west and south. I got up this morning and saw no new snow on my driveway. Decided I'd wear my road shoes, but put the Peregrines in my car in case the shade in Mendon Ponds Park had preserved some snow cover on the roads.
Got to the site with plenty of time. Noted that the roads I drove to get there (including the first 1.5 miles or so of the race route) were totally clear. Went out to do a planned 2.5 mile warmup as an out and back of the last part of the course, with the idea of checking out road conditions and renewing my memory of what the last part of the course is like. At that time, there were still some patches of ice; but they were clearly visible and easily avoidable. The takeaway for race time was to line up on the left side of the road, because the ice was all on the right side as we start the race. I ran the warmup faster than a warmup should be, but it felt okay. I guess that it was cold enough that I was running faster to generate some heat. In any event, I took my pace on the warmup as an indication that I would have a good race.
Went off with the surge at the start. Early on, before the leaders pulled out of view, I counted 10 runners ahead of me. Through the course of the race, I incremented and decremented that number in my head as I was passed or passed other runners. Later in the race, I passed many of the people who took the early start, but I could tell they were early start because of how slow they were moving. Got to the last half mile, and that number was up to 13. It looked like I wasn't going to catch anyone, so the task was to run fast enough so that no one caught me. I don't have all that good a finish line surge, but I managed to hold position. Garmin showed my time as 50:44 when I crossed the line. My average pace was 6:44 per mile per Garmin (at Garmin measured 7.53 miles), or 6:46 per mile by official time and 7.50 mile distance. That's right around my T pace, which is what I wanted to run for this race. I'm happy with that average for 7.5 miles of rolling hills.
Hung around the finish a few minutes to congratulate other runners. My teammate Bill crossed at 54 minutes and change, and was happy with his result. He asked me if this was a PR for me. First reaction, I don't know because I don't keep track of 7.5 mile races. Second reaction, the only 7.5 mile race I do is this one, and the conditions were a lot harder the past two years, so it likely is a PR. Checked the records when I got home; my previous 7.5 mile PR was 53:07 (under harder conditions), and I have run one 12K race (about 7.45 miles) in 51:24. So yes, it was a PR. My official time today turned out to be 50:44.830; I don't know whether the fractional seconds will be retained for series calculations, so call it 50:45.
Bill wanted to run an easy mile for cool down, and he talked me into running with him. We started out southbound, into the wind. At this point, I'm feeling chilled from the wind on my sweat, and we're not running fast enough for me to warm to the effort. I called it quits at the entrance to the shelter, ended up running a mere 0.36 mile at about a 10 minute pace. Barely running at all, but I'll put it into the total distance for tracking marathon training miles. I ran enough fast miles today.
When the results were posted, they had me as 12th overall when I expected to be 14th. If I think back, my best guess is that a couple of runners I passed who I thought were the fastest of the early start people must have really been normal start runners who went out ahead of me and flamed out from going out too fast. Final standings are now online. I was 12th of 221 overall, and 1st of 15 in the M 60-64 age group. Bill was second in my age group.
Freezeroo points are based on the ratio of the overall gender winner's time to the individual runner's time. I got 92 and a fraction points from Freezeroo #1. The winner of today's race ran 45:48.437, so I got 90 and a fraction points for today. As expected, I'm leading my age group for the Freezeroo series after two races. Overall standings aren't meaningful right now, because the series is scored as best 4 results out of 6 races and many of the faster runners have only run one Freezeroo race so far. The same phenomenon could apply to age group results, but since I won the age group in both races so far I'm not concerned about that.

January 1, 2017 Freezeroo #2 (Resolution Run 7.5 mile) (Mendon, NY) Finished in 50:45
January 7, 2017 Winter Warrior Half Marathon (Gates, NY)

@orphia wow that is a great PR !!!1 -
Jan 1- 5.3 miles
Met up with the local run group for the annual New Year's day run and then breakfast. I was surprised to see about 50 people show up. It was a nice, moderate for January morning. Glad to get out there. Now I have my pork tenderloin cooking in the crockpot and watching football. I cleaned my house all day yesterday so that I can make this a lazy day! Have a good one everyone!
@Orphia- Bam! You nailed that!1 -
I was a slacker for most of 2016, but I'm feeling social enough to join you guys for 90 miles this month.
01/01/17 - 5 miles1 -
Well, this run thing must be contagious. Signed my wife up for thr KP Challenge in Duluth, MN. It's a 4k in March, a 5k in April and a 5 mile in July. I might be recovered enough from my marathon to run the 5 mile with her, but that's too far out to guess. Fighting thr urge to run today, since it's my only rest day.2

My local Park Run did a special today for the New Year. Temperature of 5C, with a windchill that took it down to -3C. I intended to take it slowly as it would have been the baseline this years 5k's........ I ran it within a minute of my PB. So much for taking it easy as I come back from injury!!
Jan: 45 miles running.
1st: 3.88 miles, Park Run - MTD 3.884 -
@MobyCarp congratulations on your race.
Kudos to everyone who started off the new year with a good run!
I'm going to set my goal as 75 km again this month but I may change that based on the training plan I get from the running clinic I signed up for which starts on Friday.
Good luck to you all in your goals for January and 2017!0 -
For anyone trying to figure out goals for the year, someone posted this in one of my running groups on FB and I thought it was pretty helpful

I'm bonkers. I think I need an antidepressant. Alex is leaving in 16 hours. DH is a pain. I'm feeling a little anxious? But, I'm using this to dig in to a running plan, even if it's hard. No violin practice. DH has been home. Maybe I'll fess up I have it an practice in the garage.

@kristinegift The 50K is a great goal, and I look forward to seeing your results.0 -
Oh yeah... I almost forgot to log my run!! Lol
1/1: 19 miles!! But my headphones died after 3.7 miles. Also did some runner's yoga, and I can walk without wincing again.
Now, hoping my Packers kick some Lion butt!3 -

Great run! My headphones died on a run 6 months ago and I've been running without them since them.1 -
Setting my goal of 40 miles for January. I'm sick right now but as soon as I'm better I'll be on the ball!2

So, decided to change my goal. Some context. I decided to stop having my Aunt coach me. She's nice and all, but only having 1 week of training at a time was driving me crazy, because I like to see the full arch of training and how things fit. Then I began looking at training plans.
This led me to making a "to hell with it" decision, and I'm actually BUYING a custom training plan. The plan will be 20 weeks, which means it will start the last week of this month/first week of next month. On the questionnaire I filled out, I used my 4 week average of 36 for the weekly mileage question. This is a little lower than I could do, but is still decent for me, using 12 miles as my long run distance.
Long story short, the rest of January, until the end, is less structured for me, so I'm going to try to maintain that 36mpw average for the next 4 weeks which will give me a total of 144 miles for the month, plus whatever I run on the last 2 days of the month, when I begin my plan.
New goal: Stay healthy (colds not counting) so I can begin "real" marathon training at the end of the month, with a nominal mileage goal of 140 miles.0 -

@Elise4270 Hugs. You've been through a long tough period just with your recovery from surgery, let alone your son now having the DUI accident.
I think an antidepressant is probably overdue. Make an appointment ASAP. And keep us updated. You're like our family.1 -
11km walk today, and 20 minutes of yoga.
Back to work tomorrow, feeling refreshed.2 -
@BeeerRunner @MNLittleFinn No headphones is the only way I can run these days; music would just distract me (as crazy as that sounds). And resisting the urge to stop running and start dancing instead sounds like more effort than the actual running itself, lol.
--
I think I'm going to be dialing back the running this month, and focus more on some glute and hamstring strength-work instead, as I'm starting to feel a little nagging pain creeping in deep under my left butt cheek; nothing too serious for now, but a warning sign that something is starting to become a little too strained and therefore needs to be remedied. Therefore this month I'll be taking it slow and easy for sure...I don't want an injury to prevent me from even getting to the start line of the Dallas Hot Chocolate 15K!
Soooo....

I have to confess being slightly amused that your cat knows about your violin but your DH doesn't. Aren't you afraid that your cat will let your secret out of the bag? By the way, I receive sheet music for my flute for Christmas....so exciting.2 -
Forgot to post my monthly challenge goal. After failing to meet my goal 2 months in a row, I am staying with the 50 mile goal for this month and at least one in outside per week.1

Haha! The cat is my ally. Well, she's MY baby. She's been good about staying out from under the bed. In fact, both of 'em have. One use to run under there just to have dh chase her. The violin might be in their way now.... he knows I wanted one. So it'll be no surprise when he finds out. I can just say "remember? I told you....." And he's defenseless because he can't remember anything (other than he's constantly angry about something).
I've been printing simple stuff of online. I'm hoping this week I'll have another 2-3 simple songs under my belt.1
