Started with parenting boards 16ish years ago. They are the most heavily moderated forums I have ever been on. I guess when it comes to raising kids people are extremely defensive and personal.
Some people on MFP are not very nice but the board as a whole has a fairly good atmosphere.0 -

I was on a scrapbook message board that was all sorts of crazy. Between arguing politics, engaging in competitive parenting, and picking apart each other's religions they still had the energy to critique scrapbooking and photography techniques. If they were really on a roll, you could get all in one thread.
I recall a crock pot thread that was an pile on of epic proportions.1 -
Kiwi Farms is The Worst. But also super entertaining. So much of my anti-late-night-snacking inspiration comes from their boards.1

The peeps at MFP are actual care bears. When I was a teenager I joined a writing forum and I think I'm still traumatized from that experience. The forum called itself "cutthroat" but tbh, actually having my throat cut would have been less painful than the condescending vitriol disguised as "constructive criticism" I endured before wising up and leaving.
Also, most fandoms are brutal. And certain sub-Reddits can be pretty damn nasty, as well.
And then there's tumblr.0 -

I loved tumblr a few years ago but there was a point at which things got out of hand. I still log in but I do not comment on things much anymore. I decided kitten pics and shitposts were the safest route there.0 -

I found the nicest, kindest, most supportive wedding forum on the Internet while I was planning my wedding (unfortunately, it's not around anymore). Any time I'd venture over to the mainstream ones, I'd walk in and walk right back out. Stressed out brides can be seriously nasty people.
I accidentally followed links to an MRA forum once. THAT was terrifying. That takes a flying leap from "mean people" to "scum of the earth."0 -
