Thanks @Elise4270 and @BEERRUNNER ! Very helpful info. Dr Google is telling me it's tight quads. I have been stretching them, but my main focus has been on my hamstrings. I am going on vacation on Tuesday. I think I will continue to work on them and make an apt with a PT when I get back.3

@ddmom0811 so sorry about the people you know in the hospital. I hope they all recover well. What a scary stuff all around.
@RespectTheKitty What the what? We have a couple of guys in our running group who wear shorts all year round and it astounds me how they can bare their legs in the cold. But shirtless and barefoot? Maybe it was some personal challenge like those people who jump in an icy lake, but that sounds a little concerning mental-health wise. I'm sure it made for an interesting run.

@ddmom0811 @HonuNui The time doesn't really concern me, it's the stress of training. Coming off the injured list to HM in 11 weeks is potentially just dumb. I could just plan on a fall half. But a slow half may not be stupid.
Just wondering what anyone else thought. Off 7 months now with no cardiovascular training.
Doc appointment the 24th. I will take into I account how he feels about it.
I don't remember whether this will be your first half marathon. If you've never run a half before, I'd say don't do it. Take more time, and wait until there is no doubt that your body is ready for the distance. Maybe don't even register for a half until you feel ready to run that far.
If you've run one or more half marathons already, the picture changes. You will have some idea of how it feels to run that far in a race environment, and can make a more rational decision as to whether 11 weeks is enough to get to where you need to be.
Thanks @MobyCarp. I've run 3. My PR is 2:15.
ETA I was on the verge of that sub 2 HM. Best 5k was 24:44. I'd really like to be moving back to chasing those PR's1 -
It's 80F degrees here It was 20F Wed morning. Crazy! I walked 3.8 miles this morning because at this point my overall fitness needs improvement so I thought walk first run later because I'd never walk after running. So hoping after sundown to make it out for 3 miles.2
-
Got a trail run in today... really struggled with it, though. As I ramp up my mileage, I've increased calorie intake because I tend to be truly struggling with both hunger and running performance / speed.

@greenolivetree it was 87 here. I got tan lines today!2

Hi all, I'm new to this board + relatively new to the MFP community in general. I set a new year's resolution to run 2017 miles in 2017. Ambitious, as I'm not a "runner". My Feb goal is 60 miles. I'm starting low and ramping up to peak in summer. Miles so far are on the elliptical. Soon to convert to treadmill. Then outside as it's nicer. I'm in MN, so not outdoor friendly weather yet.
Here's my breakdown by date--daily miles--total monthly miles:
2/1 - 6.5 - 6.5
2/5 - 6.4 - 12.9
2/7 - 6.7 - 19.6
2/11 - part 1 (7.4 miles done) -- 28.0

@Elise4270 I probably should've worn sunscreen but I didn't seem to burn.
@aenglert_04 welcome! We have some other runners in the group from MN
@dpwellman how could you forget to check in with such awesome people like us?
I got my 3 miles ran. In the middle of a fight with the hub about......running. Bottom line and long story short, he claims he supports me and wants me to run and I expect him to start acting like it and prove it2 -

Welcome to MFP MRC! Now, what's this about MN not being outdoor friendly????? LOL, I'm a nut who has run in the -13 temps here on the Mesabi Iron range.
You'll find this is an amazing group that's very supportive, and you'll be amazed at the progress you can make running. My goal last march was the same as your goal for this month, and it was my first month really running. I ended 2016 with over 1200 miles and 2 half marathons.
You got this!
Oh, and the rule around here is you're a runner, unless you've found a dead body, then you're a jogger, becauseonly joggers seem to find dead bodies.2 -
Felt in good form, so I did a half marathon around the lake and creek. HM # 7.
Beat my personal best! 2:06:238 -
@MobyCarp thank you, that was very insightful! I can always rely on this group for such great info!
@RespectTheKitty I'm cold just thinking about that runner!0 -

In addition to running, I'm going to get plenty of exercise clearing the 1-2 ft. of snow we're supposed to get here in Maine! Good upper body workout!4 -
Goodness! I was all down on myself for not hitting my 13mi goal today and silently berrating myself for posting to the board. Swing back and see such warm, welcome messages. I love it! Thanks everyone!
@MNLittleFinn -13°? Hellllllll naw. I'm inside until it's in the 50's. And I have no plans on finding a dead body. But I have a degree in forensics, so I'd know what to do if I did

@aenglert_04 -13 that's not cold, that's a nice balmy day. Here are some pics my Niece took last weekend at our local Chilly Willy HM.
My Niece's AG 1st Place Medal.
I have a Men's AG 2nd place medal.
Yes that is a S**t Cicle hanging from the Nose of the medal, and yes the arms move up and down just like a runner.
Today was not a good day for our traditional Long Run Saturday.
Thursday -15C. Today 1C. All the hard packed snow has turned into polished ice. My news feed sums it up " burned 50 calories doing 10 minutes of Running (jogging), 6 mph (10 min mile)".
Met up with our local club members and broke up into mini sub groups based on distance -speed- energy-ambition etc. 5 of us took off for an easy 10-15 km. At the first cross road the footing changed from Okay to Runner down. All the vehicles spinning their tires going around the corner had it polished. 2 of us went down, I smacked hard on my left knee. Walked it off and took off again. Got to the next corner - we all dropped into the Runner Shuffle to crawl around the corner - the lady in front of me went down and accidentally pulled me down landing on my right hip. May have said ** Kitten ** and a few other ** words. Walked it off and took off again, now heading down Westbrook Hill with good footing, the road made a little turn and now faces straight South. The footing change into an all out super slider with runners going all over the place. We all went down, some on the road, some in the drainage ditch beside the road. We definitely said lots of ** Kitten ** words. With out discussion we all started walking back to our vehicles and the coffee shop.
Including the Walk back a grand Total of 3 km today. 1.5 km of running/falling.
Knees are a beautiful shade of purple and one cut on the left knee.
02/05 21.2 km –21.2km –118.8 km – YTD 141.3 – Chilly Willy HM ChipTime PB@ 2:12:36
02/06 3.0 km –24.2km –115.8 km – YTD 144.3 – 3 km Recovery run
02/11 3.0 km –27.2km –112.8 km – YTD 147.3 – 3 km Falling on the Ice
Tomorrow will be a Swim-Hot Tub day. No running for the bruised and battered.3 -
@greenolivetree it was 87 here. I got tan lines today!
Yes, I'm already getting my shoe tan lines. My feet will probably stay super white since there's no way I'm wearing flip flops right now with my black toe nails, blisters and callouses! Lol!4 -
@Orphia Way to go on your new HM PR!!!

As others have mentioned, the temperature has been so freakin' warm; I went out for a quick 5-miler at 11pm and it was still in the upper 70s.

RespectTheKitty wrote: »Addendum: My car is once again in the shop. Took it in last week Sunday when the check engine light came on while driving, and also the car felt like it was downshifting. They kept the car for three days, I had to get a rental, and they couldn't find the problem. They wound up just cleaning out the fuel system and hoping that fixed the problem. Well, it didn't. I was driving again last night and the same thing happened, the car felt like it downshifted for like 30 seconds and the check engine light came back on. Sooo... this time I took it to my parents' mechanic. He won't be able to get to it until Monday, but luckily this place has loaner cars, so for the weekend I am driving a Honda Odyssey minivan. LOL! This thing is huge compared to what I drive.
So, weekend #2 of car trouble. At the very least, it's been interesting having different cars to drive in the meantime.
@RespectTheKitty My car has been doing something similar since December. If you take it to an Autozone with the check engine light on, they can hook it up to the machine and see what codes it's throwing. They'll do that for free, so it's totally worthwhile. In my case, the code comes back as a bad Transmission Speed Sensor. When the engine goes ker-chunk and the engine light comes on, it's falling out of overdrive. I've been turning off the overdrive, because it's the ker-chunk from the engine that really gets to me. The mechanic down the street from my house doesn't really do transmission work, but he'll replace the part if I bring it to him, with the caveat that it might not fix the problem. I've been procrastinating for no real reason - I know that doing nothing will definitely not fix the problem. Replacing the $30 part MAY fix it. Meanwhile, every few days, the check engine light clears itself, and I forget to drive with the overdrive off, and it goes ker-chunk again. Today might be the day to order the part!

@juliet3455 I think you're the only person on here who can make me feel wimpy about staying indoors when it's -20F outside.....LOL.....but you're WAY farther north than I am.0
-
Ughhhhh, I really really really need to get some trail shoes, or running yaktrax, or make screw shoes, or something! It's precipitating today, started out as sleet, and is now a sleety, wet snow, so it looks like I'm gonna be doing 9 miles on the dreadmill. Blahhhh. I'd have zero problems running in the precipitation, and it's certainly warm enough, around 29F, but I am just so paranoid about slipping and getting an injury.0

Monthly goals:
Mileage goal: 150
Real Goal: Stay healthy enough to get into the swing of real marathon training.
Today's notes: Ugh. I never thought 3 miles could be so hard. 21mph head and/or cross winds for the whole run. Ran the first 2 with Mom, and then another mile on my own to complete the assignment for today. Legs still trashed from yesterday, and I have 3 more days of running coming up, as tomorrow starts my first string of 6 running day weeks.2 -
@MNLittleFinn Unless there is someone from Alaska in this group I think I win the Northern Exposure Award.
Nothing hurts this morning after yesterdays Fun, so I plan on getting out for a dash today - with no crash's - on a different route that some runners were on yesterday and they reported that it was good. +5C this morning. A mini-mid winter heat wave.
@BeeerRunner Just put some Black polish on your other toenails and then you can work on a Sandal Tan.
@RespectTheKitty I hope your parents mechanic can fix the car issue. Nothing worse than an un-reliable vehicle.
@Orphia HM around the lake sounds fantastic. I am guessing this was a personal run on an open road/trail.
Hoping to go to this Nova Scotia HM in June. Its on the opposite side of the country from me. I am in North Western Canada and this is on the Eastern Seaboard.
Then there is this one also out East ( next year ) - which is a Cross the Border HM. Not sure if it will survive the new Trump policies. Not sure if I will survive the Temperature and Humidity.3 -

I'm doing the Bay of Fundy HM this year! Already registered! My aunt and uncle actually live in the Whiting/Lubec area of Maine and own a couple small cottages that they rent, so I'm flying up there with my grandma and will stay in one of the little cottages. I'm really excited for this race, just seems like it has a really fun small-town, kooky vibe. Plus, it was pretty awesome signing up for a race where it needed my passport information! It's supposed to be a hilly course as well, so I need to make sure I do a lot of my training on hilly routes near me, lol. I'll let you know how it is!1 -
Hello!

lporter229 wrote: »Just finished my first 20 miler of the season. It was a bit of a struggle. I decided to listen to my body yesterday and took the day off from running. My hubby and I watched the movie "Captain Fantastic" (good flick) last night and I foam rolled and stretched through the whole thing. I was still worried about the leg this morning when we started off because it was already sore. At the start, I was pretty convinced that I would not make it through 20 miles. It started loosening up a bit in the middle of the run and I kept on going, but the last several miles were a bit rough.
I am still trying to figure out how to handle this thing. Obviously, it's not super serious situation because I was able to do the 20 mile run and still had negative splits (sped up a bit on the last 5 miles when I was solo, not intentionally, but because that was where it felt best to run). When I had the stress fracture in my foot, running was simply not possible, although I am trying not to compare the two. I am considering contacting a PT. For those of you that have, how do they actually determine what you have going on? I mean, if it's just based off of me saying it hurts, then well, what's the point?
In my experience, the PT finds things that I didn't know even hurt. They understand how each link of the chain works together, why it hurts and what is happening with it. I think pts are more valuable than my doc's.
So, it couldn't hurt to give it a shot and see what they can do for you.
How do they determine? Mostly feel around, Check tender points and range of motion, flexibility and strength too. When you do "A", it hurts and how it hurts can help them determine the cause. Good one can just touch an area and feel whats going on. I've had one or two that just didn't care if something hurt outside of what the doc sent me for. Good ones will address all of it. If they don't, might keep looking if you feel it also needs attention.
@lporter229 I found exactly what @elise4270 says here. Moving, touching and talking to you. At good PT is like gold!
I was supposed to run a 5K yesterday that Skip was volunteering at, I went out at 5:30 to run up the street and the pain was so bad I couldn't. The pain feels like it's in the bone where my legs goes into my hip.0 -
It's decided. Long run switched to tomorrow. Gonna enjoy a snow day today in my pj's.
And this is the main reason I'm switching today's 9 mile long run to tomorrow, when I can do it outside. Even with Netflix/Amazon Video/etc the dreadmill operates on something related to dog years: 1 hour of real time feels like 7 hours in dreadmill time
