I've been getting back on the tennis courts more, which has been aggravating my hip, so I haven't been meeting my goals. Still loving the positivity and information in this thread though.6 -
Non-running (or, more accurately, pre-running) check-in.
My first 5k is in the morning, and I'm all jittery and talkative and wide awake like a child on Christmas Eve. It really is quite ridiculous.
Ok, that is all. Catch you on the flip side.13 -

Kicked off week 2 of "back to running" with a 3 mile hilly route. I planned out a nice short run nearby on some hilly cross streets I had never run before. They were a lot steeper than I thought, but I made it with nothing worse than just muscle fatigue.
The snow is gently falling, no accumulation yet. It smells like rain, not snow outside.

@HRKinchen Looking forward to an update on how you enjoyed your first 5k. Hope it was fab.
I did a few 5k's in my early 40's. I'd love to do some in my 50's. My first one was a huge disappointment. I was unprepared for the throng of slower runners I found myself in. I crazily zig zagged around everyone in the beginning, wasting a ton of energy, and maybe even annoying others. I felt caged in and stressed out for the first kilometer. I had expected that with all that adrenaline that it would be easy to better my best time, but I finished slower than any recent practice run. Wish I had access to all the wonderful info and advice on MFP back then, instead of figuring it out the hard way.6 -

Goal 2 Finish under 30 minutes - done
Stretch goal Finish around 26 minutes - done
Did the race to check out running downtown and see what it is like. I learned there is more concrete then I thought and that parking is ridiculous. I will plan on someone dropping me off either downtown and picking me up or at least getting me to and from the rapid (train) station. A lot more wind then I anticipated also which caused an asthma attack, so in addition to fuel for the race I will need my inhaler.
Race itself was good, legs felt fresh and relaxed. I picked a comfortable pace and tried to keep it. According to Strava I managed negative splits and a PB for 2 miles of 25:36 which was faster then I thought as I was aiming for around 27 minutes. Felt like the race was just starting when I was crossing the bridge to the finish and it was really nice to have a good race after the last couple horrible ones.
March 11- St Malachi 2 miler (partial course preview for Cleveland Half) - DONE 25:36
April 9 - Cleveland Towpath 5 miler (maybe)
May 21 - Cleveland Marathon Half
June 10 - Run and Ride Cedar Point 5k

So Thursday evening I had one of those Zen runs, the ones we all agree are what we run for, where the world is great and the body is fine. There were peregrine's screeching in the gorge I run in, and it just felt great. This morning however? Not a good run. My calves were aching from the start. I need to get in ten miles, and considered a shoot run and trying again tomorrow. My heart rate was to high, my legs ached, but once I got over the hills it got better. I messed up my distance measurements so had to take a detour to get the miles in but I continued on and did the run. Not a good run, but bearable.
And so this afternoon I thought I'd go and pick up some new running shoes to rotate in with the sketchers as my feet end up wet each time I run at the moment (too many puddles). There was sheer terror on the face of the salesman in the running store, when he agreed me gait analysis, and I asked him whether overpronating is necessarily a bad thing. I stopped short of telling him to watch videos of Haile Gebrselassie as he in his fear handed me over to someone else. I felt bad for arguing but I couldn't help myself. Left with a pair of Kinvara 8's (after trying them on for comfort and running up and down the street) so we'll see how I get on with them.6 -

Started marathon training this week. I'm now realizing I've been running too quickly which has been hurting my training and races. On 3/8 I ran 3mi at a 10:11 pace only to slow down to 12:10 on the way back. Today I programmed Runkeeper to tell me my average and current pace every mi and aimed for a slow and steady 11:30 for my first official long run. It went loads better. If I had run my previous HMs like that I would have done so much better. It was still a bit harder to keep pace than looking at a watch. If anyone has any inexpensive watch recommendations let me know!
Planned races
5/17 - 12k
7/17 - Marathon3 -
Ok, so now I'm hooked.
My first 5k was a blast, and I set a new PR, to boot, running 3.22M in 44:45! (according to Runtastic. I haven't seen official race stats yet, but I definitely crossed the finish line with less than 45:00 on the race clock, which was my stretch goal for this race.)
It was a beautiful morning: ~60*F, partly cloudy, 6mph winds, and no rain despite predictions. The race began and ended beneath some of the prettiest moss-covered live oaks on campus at one of my alma maters. The route was well marked and dotted with volunteers who cheered us along and humored my request for "fives" as I passed.
My husband and 3yo son also came out and cheered for me. The start/finish line was about two blocks from the midway point on the loop, so they were able to see me off, then cheer me on at the midway point, and make it back to the finish line to greet me there. (One benefit of running slow as a turtle! Lol)
I did the same intervals I had practiced - walking warmup for one song (my way of ensuring I didn't start too fast due to excitement), then 3 songs running + 1 song walking, on repeat. Set a PR on Mile 1 of 13:03, followed by 13:52 and 14:40 on miles 2 & 3. That's pretty fast for me, so I'm definitely pleased. Max speed 8.9 mph, average pace 13:54, also a PR for this distance. I did so much better than I could've imagined when I started running with C25K on Jan. 1!
Overall, I'm pretty stoked and looking forward to the next one! By year's end, I'd like to run one straight through, without walk breaks. Hoping to get at least two more 5Ks under my belt before the summer heat arrives.

As predicted, I decided to pass on the long run this morning but I replaced it with a hot power yoga class at a new studio that just opened, then a warm treadmill run, then a freezing cold dog walk. I should have done the opposite order on all of that because now I'm still trying to warm up and get my fingers back to normal color. It's bitter out there and now the snow is really coming down too. C'mon March, let's pull it together.
Going to try to do a long run indoors tomorrow if I can find a track open.
And now it's time for my favorite part of the week, curling up on the couch - tired human and tired dog relaxing and napping.7 -
Finished 10.3 slushy miles. My knee is sore. Hopefully this pizza will help. . .7

Congrats @HRKinchen! Sounds like a great event and great performance. You'll probably be running one all the way through before you know it!2

@lporter229 That sounds promising that your PT lets you run 8 miles on Monday!
@jessicalferrara Welcome to the challenge!
@7lenny7 Great elevation so far! Do you have a target for this year?autumnblade75 wrote: »And You can set Zombies, Run! to play missions back-to-back! A handy hack for running a set number of missions before starting Radio Mode is to only download as many missions as you want to run back-to-back.
I bought a phone with a memory card specifically to have storage for all 5 seasons of missions, so I could stop deleting them to make more room... Not a strategy I employ.MNLittleFinn wrote: »My 230 also has distance alert options for the alerts setting, so I'm assuming that, in addition to the alert every mile, with the split time, it could be set for a custom range.....though I'm not sure what reason there would be for that.midwesterner85 wrote: »Question for the group: Would it be crazy or a bad idea to add a 10K 'trail run' (on mixed surfaces) only 1 week before the more challenging 12K trail race?
@iofred I ran the solar system today too. That makes this the first time I ran with somebody from this group! Although you finished faster than me. Great time!
@garygse LOL on the cobweb picture! I don't mind the webs as such, but the ones that still have spiders sitting in them are another story...
@kimlight2 Great race, congratulations on finishing under your stretch goal, awesome!
@girlinahat Enjoy your new Kinvara's! I have the previous model (7) and like them, I hope you'll be happy with your's too.
@chichidachimp I don't have any particular watch recommendations - apart from maybe look for a used one if you want to save money. And check out online reviews on battery live and such. I had a moment few days panic last year when I thought the battery of mine wouldn't last for a full marathon (luckily it did, once I turned it to "airplane mode" to stop it from looking for external sensors or phones all the time).
Which training plan are you following for your marathon?
@HRKinchen Congratulations on your first 5k race! And you just started C25K in January? Wow, that's really impressive how far you've come in such a short time!

Wednesday's run really sucked, but I'm happy with my runs Thursday and today.
Thursday was a prime example of all the things that don't happen on a treadmill, the good and then bad.
The bad came first: I had planned to run some repeats on a nearby hill, but recently people with two dogs moved into the house next to it. They are sometimes at the fence and bark at me when I run by; but as of a few days ago, there's a hole in the fence One of the dogs got out and started growling and running after me; fortunately he stopped when I turned towards him, waved my arms and yelled. I walked until I felt I was a safe distance away; hoping the owners would hear the noise and come out to catch him. Instead, when I turned around to look back, the second dog had gotten out as well. That ended my plans to run repeats there - I had pepper spray with me, but that doesn't mean I'm going to provoke an incident by running past that house five more times when I already know the dogs are loose...
Instead, I just ran some rolling hills, enjoying the mild evening. It's like spring arrived two days ago. The best moment was when I suddenly realised I was smelling blossoms. I stopped and looked around, and true enough, the hedges next to me were covered in pink blossoms. They smelled wonderful, and looked really pretty against the night sky. I think I was smiling for the entire rest of the run
Today I ran the "Run the Solar System" virtual race. My 10k PR from last year is 58:27. I didn't expect to beat that (not running on my own, without race day adrenaline), but I was still pusing it, hoping to finish in one hour or less. According to the race app I ran the 10km in 58:47.
I'm really happy with that. Especially since my route was net uphill (82m/270ft elevation gain). I didn't really thing it through, so all the uphill roads and flat-but-muddy fields were in those 10km. I still had ~2km to run to get home after that; all of the resulting downhills on paved roads, so my "cooldown" run ended up being the exact same pace as the race12 -
