WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR MARCH 2017

Chance, April, welcome! Tell us a little about yourself, and don't forget to sign your posts with your name and general location. For some of us, including me, your place becomes sort of your last name. Or first, in the case of NYKAREN. Barbie will post a link in this thread tomorrow for the April thread, and we'll all be posting how we did for March and a clean set of goals/resolutions for April to begin the new month.
On my husband's side, the news was not what we had hoped in regard to Corey's broken wrist. The edges of the radius break are just beginning to knit together. Eight more weeks of "light duty." And since there is no such thing as "light duty" for a welder/fabricator/mechanic, that means eight more weeks off. The doc will see him mid-May for his next X-ray, and might send him back to work in June. Maybe. Said if he breaks it again, repairs will be almost impossible. Trying to keep his spirits up, but it was a blow to him. We had both hoped for a little magic, I think.
I'm trying to flip this, as someone said earlier in the month, and take it as more time to spend with a man that I adore. And a preview of retirement.
On the brighter side, we had a good pair of buyers wander up to the warehouse Wednesday. Corey showed them through, I sicced our real estate agent on them yesterday, and they're very interested. They run a roustabout crew working on the same ranch where we lived for three years before we moved into town here. Which means the RV hookups, fenced half acre and warehouse are all of great interest to them for housing people and equipment. Fingers crossed and a good thought or two for that one would be quite welcome. Hopefully, they're a good financial risk for a bank or other lender.
And, brighter yet, the non-profit agency that I interviewed with Monday has been calling all my references, including my current boss. That tells me me they're very serious about hiring me--and I can work from my home, which would make me very happy. My boss immediately text-messaged me and told me that if I did not get the job, she would be completely shocked. I have such amazing people in my life, and need to keep remembering that I am very blessed in that respect. Including all you lot. Supposed to find out Monday whether they will be hiring me. A few more of those good thoughts would be welcome there, too. Not so much for me to get the job, as for things to work out as they're supposed to--whether that means I get the job or not.
My last press day for the newspaper (my current job, for those new to the thread, is as managing editor for a weekly paper) will be April 19, and that paper will hit newsstands April 20. I start training my replacement this week. She's young, has enormous energy, and will, I think, grow into a great editor. She'll be hired as a reporter, and much of my editing/page-building duties will be part of her job. I like her, and I like training, so it should be quite fun getting her up to speed the next couple weeks. Three more papers, the 6th, 13th and 20th, and I'm out of this grind--and finally done with community journalism. Hopefully, I have sense enough in future to remember that, if you're not the owner of the paper, you're just treading water.
Now, for why we're here on this thread, I'm having to flip things again. I was beating up on myself yesterday because I'm only five pounds lighter than I was at the beginning of the month, and my ambition was to lose ten. How stupid is that? A lot of people would be pretty darned happy to lose five pounds. I'm such a goober. So my April goal, because hopefully I DO learn something along the way, will be to lose five pounds. Again.
Wrote more than I planned, but so glad to have y'all to share with this with. You are all precious to me.
Love y'all,
Lisa in West Texas5 -
Had dance class tonight, just got home to the dogs delight. Picked out my first pair of dancing shoes, This will be first time of wearing heels in 15 years. 18000 steps today6
-
Thank you for all the encouragement.....New thread tonight...1
-
Pam, first, congrats on your 18,000 steps! WOW! I feel like I've conquered the world when I hit 10,000. You and Barbie are going to walk to the moon and back this year with those types of stats. Are your dancing shoes like "tap" shoes? Those look comfy. 6" stiletto pole dancing shoes - I'd pass and head for the snack cupboard for sure.
Lisa, what super news about the possible warehouse buyer, the job, the new reporter/editor you are training. "Things work out like they are supposed to" - a very grounding concept, and true. Sorry Corey isn't healing as quickly was hoped, and that he isn't going too stir-crazy and finding things to keep himself occupied that don't involve that wrist. I have a friend who raises the herb comfrey - it's called "knit-bone" in some circles and theoretically helps broken bones heal. I have no idea if it does or not or how the plant would be prepared for that. I'd likely delve into it more if I had a broken bone. Good news about your thyroid test!!
Kim, you are the best auntie ever. Your nephew sounds like a trooper sleeping on that teensy bed for such a long time.
Sue, thanks for the firewood offer. An idea- some churches and charities such as Love Inc might come pick up that wood in your barn for distribution to the poor.
DH trimmed up some fir trees at the back of our property last year and has several brush piles - he was going to burn them but doesn't have the energy to drag that stuff over to the burn site. Our next door neighbor did the same thing last year and hired a lawn service to haul the branches away. I called him yesterday and asked how much that cost -- $300 per load and he had several loads. DH gulped - we'll find a different way to dispose of it. I'm all for letting it break down under the trees as they are good places for bumblebee nests.
Barbie, sorry you had to make the trip to town. In my mind, I'm done for the day at 2:00 pm - running to town after that had better be a dire emergency as the stores are too crowded, folks grumpy and hungry from just getting off work, etc. Hope Jake gets over this crud fast. Maybe the sunny days will help.
Pip, hope the new Director at the Y pulls head out. You guys have done a lot for that place, it was a fitting gesture for them to have let you have locker in return - why would they want to tick off a donor?? Someone's got some 'splainin to do.
Chris, bummer about your water heater. Hopefully the new one will be much more energy efficient and you'll save back what you spent on it in a few years.
Heather - sorry about DH's sudden dizziness, hope the Epley does the trick for him and you can take your trip to Selbourne soon.
OK, I know I've skipped a few pages - will go back and re-read when I get some down time. Love learning more about this group and what makes us all tick. Lots of Vitamin F.
Oh, and welcome newbies! Keep coming back, join in when you feel like it or just sit in the corner and listen to us chat. We're good at celebrating victories and giving hugs when needed.
I found a thought for today:
OK, better get going - and work on my goals for April. March, I kind of schlepped along. Tomorrow is a new day. Thanks Barbie for getting our new thread up and running!

Good morning all! Slept in until 6am this morning, due to the fact that I have no kids and am spending the day getting ready to hit the road tomorrow morning! DH is being a pill. I found out part of his pessimism about this trip is stemming from the fact that he is changing his RA meds. He has finished weaning himself off one med and, according to the doc needs to spend a week having daily blood tests done to see if his body is handling it well. That is supposed to be this week. I told him he needs to call his doc and get enough of the med to last for one more week and to postpone the blood tests to the week after we have returned. I am not sure why he spends so much time worrying. I am sure his doc will cooperate after knowing why he is asking for a postponement. But, for now, he is in pain and CRABBY as all get out. This trip will definitely be a test of patience for me. I am so glad these little tests are not "heaven or hell" exams. I am a patient person; but I could probably go either way. On a lighter note: DH upgraded his phone yesterday (from a flip phone to a smart phone) and DYS and I were showing him how to use it, navigate the functions, etc. I guess I was grating on his nerves a bit because when my son was showing him how to use Google speak "Google where is the nearest restaurant?" etc. , DH was getting frustrated because his commands weren't going through and I was trying to give him advice like "speak clearer" "louder" "don't mumble" which was causing him to glare at me and growl a bit; so I asked, "Google: where is the best place to dump my wife's body?" We all laughed. Mood lifted!
Chance, April- Welcome! Great group of women here! Lots of support and chit-chat! Please tell us about your selves and remember that today is the last day of March, we will be continuing our group into the month of April. Just look for Barbie's post tonight for the link to April and remember to bookmark the page!
Lisa- You are flippin' awesome! Enjoy your time with Corey, and give him my best wishes for complete and rapid healing! Good luck with the potential buyers, and I am sure the young newswoman will appreciate learning from you. And who wouldn't want to work with you?! Good luck with your potential position!
Pip- Yes, right the letter to the director. He is being a fool! And I agree with (was it Kim?) write to the board. I can't imagine any business feeling so cocksure of themselves that they can ignore a good sized donation and happy clients. Stat: A happy client will tell on average five people about a business; a disgruntled client will tell on average twenty people about your business.
Chris- So sorry to hear about your water heater! These little (big) home problems are the PITS! thinking of you! Find your happy place and hopefully it is outside and not in a box of vanilla wafers!
DJ- I have found myself in a "coasting" mode the past couple of months. Dealing with death and life. I try to make the best choices for me; but one of the best things I can do for myself is come on here and read or visit with my friends. I have to get my head and heart right to stay on the right path. I agree with your words on what this group means to you! I feel the same! Much love my friend!
Well, gotta get busy! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)4 -
Well just got home after cataract surgery, wasn't too bad but I definitely didn't like it still it's done now. Bummer that I can't go to the gym but will try to get more walking in. The weather is getting better.
Did fine yesterday exercise wise and eating until evening when carbs were calling and only stopped snacking when I went to be, putting it down to stress about op.
HEATHER _ my DD had that dizzy problem a couple of years ago, she saw a specialist and it was those danged crystals. We'd never heard of it before then and apparently the exercise moves them.
LISA - good news about warehouse and the job (fingers and toes crossed) Sorry about DH
BARBIE- thanks for new thread

Wow. Now I remember why I left this thread. It is so prolific. I will never be able to keep up. Thanks for remembering me Barbie. I remember quite a few of those still on this thread. But I will just pop in from time to time to see how you all are doing. Bodi and Ritter are still the boys of my life and DH is DH. Bodi is 7.5 years old. When I joined this thread he was just a puppy. My granddaughters are now 5 and 3.5 years old. Time flies. See you all next month.1

I had a nasty round of acid reflux last night and wound up sleeping in the recliner downs stairs, until DH came down and turned on a bunch of lights. He didn't realize I was there. I haven't had acid reflux in ages. I looked back over yesterday's eating and the meal at he fish house is my candidate for causing it. Everything else was normal for me. I'm not going to order a salmon burger there again. :noway:3

Sue How IS that feisty Arabian these days? Still picking up his water and dumping it? My horse hero. I really love horses. Haven't ridden for a million years, used to ride Western as a girl. My last horse was named Buddy Knapp. The color listed on his papers was "brown". Not sorrel or bay or chestnut. Brown. Which I think is a dark bay, but I am no expert. I loved my Buddy. I live vicariously through you and Katla and others who have and ride horses.
Lisa Awesome the way things are going for you! Hope the warehouse sells and you get the new job and your husband heals soon.
Kelly Great Google question! Maybe your husband will find his sense of humor and ease up a bit. Crabby spouses are energy consuming. My partner is still having shoulder pain after her last surgery and I swear it's wearing me down almost as much as it is her. Thank goodness we have an appointment with her surgeon today. Maybe he will order an MRI to see what the problem is. She did not have this kind of pain after the other shoulder was repaired so I think something is wrong. She did catch herself from falling, tweaking the shoulder, shortly after surgery, so I am wondering if it damaged the surgery site.
Olivia is up to 8 lbs now. Her birth weight was 7lbs 9oz. She is 7 1/2 weeks old now and thriving. Time will tell if she has any long term problems, but everything is hunky-dory right now:

KarenVA- Olivia is adorable! So happy that she is doing so well

Karen in VA: I agree with Mary. I love the photos of Olivia and am happy for the whole family that she is doing so well.
I saw a river otter again this morning. It seems to be hanging out near our neighbor's house. I wonder whether it is staying under their deck. I love otters but hope it doesn't move under our deck. The raccoons were more than enough wildlife within our foundation and we still have the repair work on the calendar ahead of us.
Katla in "beautifully moist" NW Oregon. :laugh:5 -
Karen in VA , Olivia looks like such a wise little soul.

Karen: Olivia is beautiful!
Lisa: Will send positive thoughts for the job!
Sarah: Congratulations on meeting your March weight loss goal!
I had a girl's night out with three of my friends last night. I was able to check the menu ahead of time and pick some things that were MFP friendly. I even ordered dessert; I ate half and then gave the rest to my friends, so I managed to stay within my calorie objective.
My hairdresser asked me today if I had lost weight. She is one of the first to notice. It was a really great NSV moment.

Did some memoir this pm.
Well my Vitamin F friends, I had a brainstorm this afternoon!!!!! Some of you may remember I was moaning away earlier this week about DH being at cricket for the whole four days of the Easter holiday, plus four days over the following weekend. Yikes! I have arranged with my Portsmouth friend to go and see her for one day at Easter (trains permitting) and I may be going to London to sit with my chemo friend the following Friday, if they schedule her chemo that day.
But I've been playing with the idea of taking myself off for a French fix. I won't go to Lyon, because DH wants to go there with me, but there are lots of other places I can fly to from Southampton airport.
My yoga friend recently jaunted off to La Rochelle, on the west coat of France for a few nights and posted some gorgeous photos on FB. So I had a look at fares and it was not expensive. I then dropped it on DH who was a bit nonplussed, but he couldn't say much! He is deserting me after all! So, my friends, I booked it! And then I booked a hotel. Just for Sunday and Monday nights.
Phew!
The only problem with France on a Sunday and Monday night is that most of the best restaurants are shut. :grumble: but I did find a seafood bar that looks good.
I'm getting excited now. Haven't been away all by myself for many years, but it'll be an adventure and who can resist a fishing port with marina and castle towers? !?!
The airport is near the town so that's easy.
Opened a bottle of wine to celebrate . Not French alas!

Whew, caught up at last. The 6 hours in the yard picking up sticks and 5 hours playing golf just wore me out. But I have things to do and places to go.

Karen - Olivia is beautiful. My DDIL is an ortho. Surgeon and she says the shoulder surgery is the most psi ful of all.
I agree with all the comments about our little community of friends on this thread. I'm not sure how I will b e able to read or post on my trip, Which starts Monday but I will carry you all day in my heart as we travel in SE Asia.
