Morning ladies,
Very wet day here in TX. Some severe lightening occurred this morning while we were at the gym. Just a drizzle at this point.
Thanks for the afghan love being sent my way! I have been crocheting since high school. I have to pace myself as I suffer from "crochet elbow" if I do too much at a time. It is very relaxing for me.
This week is #7 on the Naturally Slim program. No weight loss this past week. I'm trying to be okay with that fact. It helps that the inches are coming off! This week concentrates on Emotional Eating. The title is How Do You Know If You Are Eating Your Feelings? I'll watch the video and let ya'll know!
We got a new dishwasher and refrigerator delivered yesterday. Such a blessing that the landlord went ahead and did this for us. They are no way near the quality of appliance we are used to and would have in our home however, it is making a world of difference here in this rental home. Larger fridge-CHECK! Larger dishwasher-CHECK! Since we are staying in the rental another year I got my husband on board to help with "cleaning up the joint" to my standards. He could just as much live in a hole for all he cares. Me - I have a bit higher expectation even in this rental home. We will tackle each room/area for a full clean down. We did the dining area this past weekend. Windows and screens inside and out. Blinds. Backdoor inside and out. Baseboards. Dog crate area. The tile flooring I will do (grout is disgusting) that when doing the kitchen. We switched around the layout of the living room. Much more space now. Will do the blinds/windows/screens this weekend. Then move on to next room/area. For the life of me I don't understand why this man I live with isn't bother by all the past renter's dirt!
Off to watch my videos and have a cup of coffee.
Have a good one!

Cherie ~ Please bring your energy to my house!1

Lisa: Great news on the thyroid results. Yay!
Cheri: I love the temperature afghan. My mom made afghans with squares like yours, but never thought to make one a temperature gradient. I love it! She once made me a skirt with squares in that pattern. I always wore it with a slip for modesty sake. Good memories.
Joyce: I've always called myself a saltaholic. I add it to most things. I have been using less since starting with MFP, mostly because of DH's health situation. He's had high BP for a long while. My BP is on the low side. Instead of cooking with salt, I tend to add it at the table.
mummoid: What is WOE? What a lovely note from your son!
Re in TX: March has been the soggiest month in recent history. I hope April showers have decided to go somewhere else. :grumble:
Heather: Food deliveries are unusual or non-existent in our area but my mom lived in near a grocery store in Salem that made deliveries. It was wonderful in her later years. She was blind in one eye and frail, so driving was not a safe thing to do. She did it anyway for too long. We moved her to an assisted living facility near us but didn't close up her home until after she passed away. We took her to visit, and discovered that the reason she wanted to go was a drawer full of packages of cigarettes. She died from emphysema.
Sarah, ON Canada: I love today's rant. Did you write it yourself or find it somewhere? :flowerforyou:
Rita: I always log my food on my phone and have never missed a day. When I'm out of our service area, things magically get posted for me. Color me happy about that. Most places we travel seem to have internet service so that explains a good deal about staying connected. I hope you're able to stay in touch while on the road. (((HUGS)))
Yoga today! Yay!!! I am considering calling the stable to see if today would be good to ride Arrow, but my own energy is on the low side so I'll decide about that later after I've been to yoga. I haven't got a riding lesson this week, and I'll get out there at least once, but more often is better for me and for him. I'm one of two or three people who are now riding him, and he is doing much better because of all the attention.

Happy Smoke and Mirrors Day!
Cheri - Your afghans are so colorful and pretty!
Janet - I drink green tea too but I don't log it because it does contain some caffeine. My rule of thumb is I don't log anything caffeinated. I'm like you, though, I don't have any problem getting in a full ration of plain old water.
Becca - How'd you like the black coffee? I used to sugar mine lightly, but when I realized I was putting less than half a teaspoon of sugar in each cup I decided to forgo it. I didn't miss it. Your son is a handsome guy!
Carol - I've never had a dog that wouldn't eat pumpkin! Plain yogurt might also help, though.
Lisa - Hurray for good thyroid results!
Ginger - The bingo task list is such a cute idea! What do you get if you fill your card?
Rita - Have you spent a test night or two in the RV? If not, between that and the rain you may want to pick a place close to home for a day or two, to give you time to settle in before you head out for the open road. You may find as you use it that you want to make minor tweaks to the way things are set up.
Lots of rain last night - I woke up around 2 a.m. to a spectacular thunderstorm. Good thing, too, because our bedroom window was open so I was able to close it before anything got wet.
Must get to work... my plate has been very full lately and I'm having to hustle to keep up.
Have a lovely day!

No. I hadn't heard of that one. I shall be looking up book 1 and giving the series a try. I enjoy mysteries and police procedural books.

Rita, sounds like your scammer was very sophisticated factoring in the "moving costs" as part of the scam. Wonder where he was from? DH was able to trace our scammer back into Canada via ISP "pings" on email addresses somehow. I'd imagine texting is harder to trace unless you're the FBI or NSA.
What's your planned itinerary? ..... have you decided what direction/destination is first on the list, you gypsy you?
Sarah, I forgot to mention how lovely that photo was of your red-headed daughter in that lavender field. WOW. Who took that photo? It could be on a calendar or advertisement, very nice.
Cheri, that afghan is just gorgeous. Where did you find the pattern? I have boxes of yarn I need to do something with - when I declutter, I'm not parting with that stash. Right now when I get the urge to crochet, I knock out a potholder in a day or two. Maybe if I get started on a big project the rain will stop and I'll be lured outside again!
Kate, I'm waiting for the grey sky/rain to take a break so I can get out and walk! As long as blue sky peeks through I don't mind but the constant spatter, avoid if I can help it. Barbie you are a trooper to get so many dog walks in during all sorts of weather.
Leigh - way to go on your 39.5 pound loss!
Mummoid - so glad your son is communicating better. That letter is a treasure!
To all of you gals stuck or backsliding a little - that is me too. Seems like when my PT job ended a few weeks ago, I had too much spare time/cabin fever and got out of my healthy routine. At least I've been walking and going to the gym more. Today I'm making a big batch of black bean/quinoa salad with lots of chopped celery/red & orange peppers and a bit of feta crumbled in - add dash of red wine vinegar and avocado oil. Lasts for days and is yummy. That and I'll make a couple low-carb muffins and just have them in the fridge in case I get hungry to thwart my trip to the goodie pantry.
My PT job might be coming back - one of the staff in the department where I worked is moving to another department and they might need a "fill-in" until a new FT person gets on-board. That is perfect. It's mostly sitting for long periods of time doing data entry which my arthritic hands don't like a lot, but I was able to break it up into 4 hour "days".
I am on an "anti-news" diet. Seems like every time I pick up the paper or see the news on TV, there's a story about government waste/ higher taxes/electric bills coming, animal abuse or a disaster somewhere that either makes me mad or sad. Same thing with Facebook - I don't want to hear about that stuff anymore so I just pop in to check a couple inspirational or cute animal websites and see if I have messages. Heck, I don't want to watch National Geo and see lions taking down gazelles. Don't want to be exposed to the stories and situations that used to be fascinating but now seem troubling.
I think the light came on last weekend when we lost the internet for 4 days and suddenly didn't have that "noise" anymore.
So this came into my FB feed yesterday - and I've been "chewing" it over: When we read a magazine, we consume. When we watch a television program, we consume. Whatever we consume affects our body and mind. If we consume toxic magazine articles, movies, or video games, they will feed our craving, our anger, and our fear.
- Thich Nhat Hanh
My decluttering has also ground to a slow crawl - the room that really needs it is one we don't heat and it's 58 back there right now. When we get sun it seems to warm quickly...so I'm going to wait it out. The electric rates rose last year and another gigantic one is coming. We have a heat pump we don't use much - we like the air conditioner in the summer tho - and rely on a little woodstove in the living room where we spend most of our time. We have to buy the firewood so not sure how much $$ we actually save, but DH gets some exercise and it keeps him busy during the winter bring in firewood, tending the stove, etc.
So as a result of our super cold winter, we are nearly out of firewood. I found "pressed" logs at Tractor Supply yesterday - bits of wood which were formed into logs under super compression. No additives. They seem to be burning fine once he gets a bed of coals going and we get a couple hours out of one. I'll pick up a dozen of them next time I go to town.
Well, the weathermap shows a break in the rain so I might as well suit up and jump some puddles!

Cheri - Love the afghans, they look so cuddly!
Becca - I like seeing what others are eating to stay on track. Much prefer your pics to TV fast food commercials that show calorie heavy, gooey sloppy food in an effort to try and get you to 'stop on by.'
Some of the food shown is repulsive rather than tempting to me, eating healthy has changed my mindset about what an appealing dish is.
Charleen in Colorado (Yup, I did eat that one asparagus popping up in the garden. It was delish!)1 -
Hi ladies, trying to stay positive, having a tough day but checking in with you all helps. I also plan on hitting the gym after work. Both are positive things I have control over and can give me a little push in the self care direction!
Lanette, I love the idea of decluttering and not consuming all the negativity on tv, internet, social media etc. Shutting it off helps me a lot, I do read the paper everyday, and that is how I want to be informed.

Charlene - Can you invite me when you have a asparagus party?
Lanette - I have got much more sensitive to news etc as I've got older. I rarely watch violent or troubling tv series either, unless it is really first class writing with a compassionate heart. We have given up quite a few things we used to watch because it all seems to be negative stuff with people being horrible to each other. Not interested any more. I prefer to watch more inspirational stuff.
My DDIL blogs and Instagrams on happiness every day. It's all the usual stuff, but great that she's doing it and building quite a profile for herself. One of her points is that it is the little choices we make daily that make a big difference. On Monday I decided to act as if I was in a much better mood and not be bad tempered with DH. It turned my and his feelings around and things are very pleasant around here again. That was a decision of mine that worked. He even asked if I wanted to go out somewhere on Friday.!!!!!!!!!
My DH 's walk was a bit wet for the last bit, but they made it to the pub. He is so lucky to have a male close friend who actively seeks out his company. That is quite unusual for men of his generation, I think.
Katla - Loads of people get food deliveries over here. All the big supermarkets do them. We really only needed the pastis, but added a few more bits. The 6 bottles were a source of great hilarity for the delivery man, who said, "I always wondered where you got your beautiful complexion." !!!! I must say it does look a bit bad, but it does last us a while!

Yvonne - I haven't decided what my prize would be for a Bingo. Probably just peace of mind and a good night's sleep. Maybe bragging rights. Certainly not food. And I don't need more stuff. I'm trying to get rid of "stuff" now. Started this a little late this month. But it is motivating. I could make myself a sticker... something like "look at me p... doing all the adulty stuff".
Ginger in TX1 -
For me the most important contributor to my happiness has been keeping my commitments to myself. I was always good at keeping my commitments to other people, but not to myself. I spent a lot of my life being rather disappointed with myself. I have always been "lazy" and lacking "willpower". Since I have been living a healthy life with much more exercise and less food I have discovered my self respect, which has meant that I have increasingly discovered the joy of self discipline. :noway: And I mean JOY. I am surprising myself nearly every day. And I love it. When I let myself down I know it severely affects my happiness, but it is possible now to turn that around quite quickly.
I remember vividly the day when I realised I'd changed. "I'm the kind of person who keeps my commitments to myself", I thought and I felt tears come to my eyes. I never thought I could say that about myself.
Amazing what "going on a diet" and doing some exercise can do for you!!!!!! The biggest NSV of all.

Heather - wow, go you. You made me tear up too. I know the feeling too, its earth shaking. Now I want to share it with my daughters and its not working. Its not something I can just "give" to them. They have to find it for themselves. Thank you so very much for sharing.

Well my ladies, its Wednesday already! I was kind of achy yesterday, so I took a bath. It helped! Dealt with a headache yesterday, but today its just a light ache, totally manageable. I had my cup of black coffee this morning, even drinking the whole thing! I think this lowering my sugar intake will definitely lower my caffeine intake as well!
So my weight is at 239.0. During Christmas time I averaged 247 to 250.0 lbs. So in the long run I am happy with my progress. It's empowering to realize that my losses are because of MY OWN choices and decision making. I ate food bought and made by me, not by any company deciding what I should eat. I am trying to eat cleaner, and when I look at restaurant commercials I know its working! Most of the commercials show overflowing greasy food on a platter. I look at it and dismantle it in my brain, noticing I could make about 4 separate meals from it. Its disgusting!
My sons are handsome aren't they! When I am out with them, I have a tendency to gush and state to whomever, "I BORE him". Heehee! They are good kids, and all have done whatever we ask of them. No baulking.
When my sons were 5, 9, and 14 years old, we had moved from a 1500 sq ft home to an 1100 sq ft home. It was a 3 bedroom but smaller rooms. The boys still wished for the sleeping room, where we crammed the single bed, and the bunk bed. The other room was the play room. No toys were in the sleeping room, so there was never a problem in having them pick up toys before they all went to bed at 9PM. Yep I all had them go to bed at the same time, unusual I know, but it worked for us. They had more room to play, and could keep stuff out longer, like Lego sets, and train tracks.
I also never gave them allowances. If the needed something for school we got it. If we were at the book store, and they found a book in a series they liked, we got it.
When we told them to tidy, they did it, because when I tidied up, the stuff I picked up went into a box and went into the garage. They hated it when I cleaned up! Also if you turn on the vacuum in front of set room you need tidied, it's amazing how quick kids can pick up Lego's or micro machines! Ah the look of terror on their innocent faces, priceless!
Well, helped husband at the laundromat today. Nothing else going on.
Hugs everyone!

Hello again! Got my main stress causer off to work this morning, spent some time outside in the dirt with the kiddos, and now they are all napping! They are getting very good at all napping at the same time! Even the seven month old is beginning to forgo the morning nap and make it until noon for a long afternoon nap! Yea!
Heather- Enjoy The Kindness Diaries! It is a quick read. It does give you something to think about, but for me it was pure joy to imagine his journey and for a bit of "fluff" reading, it made me want to sprout wings and fly away and do good deeds.
Ginger- laughing at you making a sticker about doing the "adulty stuff". I don't reward myself when I get all of my tasks done. Well, I reward myself with humming the Rocky Theme and throwing my boxer hands above my head and prancing around the kitchen like I just knocked out something bigger than "the list". Weird, but it gets me through.
Charleen- I hear you on being repulsed by some of the restaurant food commercials. I have to say that the latest fad of adding macaroni and cheese to burgers or deep frying balls of mac and cheese is quite possibly the most revolting thing I have ever seen. Ugh! My DYS, who is 23, loves those mac and cheese bites. Nauseating! There is a show on the food network, I can't remember the name, but it is something like The Biggest... and they showcase the biggest burgers, or pizzas, or omelettes, and people actually order and try to eat and get prizes for eating it all. REALLY disturbing! I am pretty sure other countries don't have such an unhealthy attitude toward food as we in America do.
Lanette- So this came into my FB feed yesterday - and I've been "chewing" it over: When we read a magazine, we consume. When we watch a television program, we consume. Whatever we consume affects our body and mind. If we consume toxic magazine articles, movies, or video games, they will feed our craving, our anger, and our fear.
- Thich Nhat Hanh How funny that you mention a quote by this man. I just began reading a book by him called Living Buddha, Living Christ. Kind of a comparative theology. Very interesting. I love his quote and it is very true; which really explains the detachment that kids of this generation seem to have from other people. So much time is spent on social media, video games, and movies. Places where violence, negativity, bullying, glorification of unhealthy choices reign supreme.
Yvonne, Re and others with no basements- It is only as an adult that I have come to realize that basements are perhaps a mostly midwestern thing?! Why don't you have basements? I only ask because my daughter is going through her first tornado watches and warnings in TX and she is a bit freaked out that she has no basement to run to. Freaks me out, too. Trying to figure out the reason for no basements, though. Is it snakes and bugs? ???
Cheri- Your remark about tile floor and grout reminded me; daughter has tile floor all through their new house. She is trying to figure out the best type of mop to clean it, that won't leave a lot of water in the grouted grooves. Any suggestions?
I told her that once Joaquin starts crawling she can attach little scrubby pads to his hands (mittens) and knees and he can do it for her!

Heather, great post. "I am the kind of person who keeps commitments to myself" - wow. What you said is so true - we have to retrain ourselves to make those commitments first. I think getting older has helped in that regard - everyone else got the best of us for a long time, now we are giving it to ourselves. YAY! Is your DDIL's blog public? I know you've posted things from her before.
Becca, your boys are gems. Good job! I was going to comment on your gorgeous "all over" tan - I am like a vampire and hide from the sun. I go from freckle to burn, I don't think there's any amount of suntan lotion that could change it. So enjoy it for me! I do like a few warm rays on my arms and legs when the sun comes out and I'm walking or working outside, but I always wear a wide-brimmed hat. Your lunch soup looks yummy and nutritious, perfect for a cool rainy day.
Kelly, I ran across Thich Nhat Hanh a few months ago and find his writing and thoughts very comforting. Coming "down" from the business of work to retirement is making me re-examine...well, me. So this was perfect timing.
There's a film coming out with Thich Nhat Hanh called "Walk with Me" - it's narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch. I can't wait to see it. Don't think I'm ready to rush off to a monastery right yet tho.
And your question about no basements...maybe it's cheaper to build houses without basements? Just a thought.
Another book suggestion: The Shipping News by Annie Proulx. I re-read it every couple years. Her writing style is a bit different in this one, fun to read aloud actually. Funny and sad and lots to ponder.

Becca … I love looking at photos of everything and anything!
Sarah … I just love that photo of your daughter in the lavender fields … I would love to do something like that …
Lisa … so glad the thyroid is under control!
Mummoid … a precious gift from your son ….
Kelly … I’ve had lengthy discussions with my son’s doctor regarding the “disconnect” that young people have today. He tells me that 6 out of every 10 patients in his practice are on anti-depressants or anxiety medications. He believes that people are so connected to devices, they not only don’t they know how to have real communication, they also see themselves as islands and where every event becomes self-centric. Then, when something goes wrong in their lives, they have no community or real supports to fall back on. Is the world more dangerous or scary? Well, that’s probably subjective. During WWII, certainly a dangerous and scary time in history, women got together and shared their concerns and worries in church groups, band aid rolling, victory garden, etc. … community encouraged a sense of “we’re all in this together.” Those struggling were lifted up. No one had to go it alone. While I’m not minimizing those who have mental health struggles … my older son has had his fair share of problems … it does make you wonder what we’ve done to our society with so much technology.

KJ - there are no basements here because the ground moves... a lot. The soil is clay-based and it expands and contracts with the changes in temperature - which are extreme from one season to the next - heck, from one hour to the next, sometimes. Can you imagine a basement - surrounded by ground that is continuously expanding and contracting - They just don't last long. I know there are some folks who have tornado shelters - they are small and built with lots of rebar - but basements just can't survive, here. The houses are all built on concrete slabs - which "float" on top of the ground when it moves. Even those require watching - and sometimes some expensive repairs.
Your daughter will be fine, Sugar. I have "watched" for a lot of tornados - never seen one, yet. They are actually fairly rare... at least in the Dallas area.
Hugs!!

Beth - I totally agree... our society has lost all sense of connection - in the true sense of connecting with other people in a real way. I think our thread actually gives us a little sense of "connection" to more than just a machine.

It has been at least 20 years since I've watched the news on TV or read the news in the paper on online by choice. I found out that it made me anxious and sad to hear about what was going on the world so I stopped finding out. I don't follow anyone on social media who shares about the news or about their opinion of what is going on. I walk away from conversations about the news and controversial topics. I have many strong feelings about right and wrong but don't need to hear about how wrong things are. I put my energy into things I can do something about.
The podcasts I listen to are "Happier" and "10% Happier".

Cheri, what is this organization you make the afghans for? They are lovely. Many years ago a dear friend made both my girls one ofr Christmas. Neither liked them and I enjoy them. One has some tears in the crochet and I carefully fold it so the tears don't show and no my cat loves it.
Mummoid, what a beautiful letter your son wrote you. Was it an assignment or just straight from the heart?
Well my oldest DD lost her job last fall, went job hunting, sent out her resume' out to many places and found an extremely interesting job. She is a personal assistant to a man who has a very interesting job. He consults for several bussiness's. He has taught her her a lot about all of these, especially the coal mining industry. She uses his car to do all his business and it is a nice lexus. Then he had knee surgery and when he got his driving privelege back he had to drive it so now she drives his Mercedes. Tough job. He pays her $20/hour, at least 20 hours/week but can work more. She frequently gets 40 hours a week. But it's no benefits. It has been her desire to make herself so indespensable that he gives her full time with benefits. But then out of the blue she gets an email from one of the places she sent a resume' to. Before the job she was laid off from, she was a property manager. She was usaully placed in low income apartment complexes. She learned a lot and loved the people but hated the complexes. So she interviewed for another property but this one is a middle income complex. Full benefits but hourly wage $12. So she has a lot of talking to hubbie, her present employer which was a friend before he hired her. He has known all along that she might be continuing to look for a full time job with benefits. But she was so happy working for this guy and soaking up so much info and learning.
I sure wish April the giraffe would have her calf! I need my life back. But she is getting closer and closer.

Well, Wonderful Women
Today is day 365 on MFP. Not only did I not make it to Onderland... but the scale hasn't budged in ages. *sigh*
However - I have changed my plan back to what was working before the knee incident - and I must say, knowing that I have approximately 800 calories a meal makes it a lot easier to stay on track. The whole "eating back the calories" thing meant my intake would vary according to my day - and it was so much harder for me with all that floating up and down.
I already feel better about the whole process just knowing that I get 1600 calories a day and I had better get my butt on the elliptical, or in the pool, or whatever, every day or I won't lose any weight.
So, upward and onward. I have, surprisingly, not had many "Veruca Salt" moments, lately... probably because I have been too busy to think about the future, much... LOL.
I just wanted to take a moment to say "Thank You" to each and every one of you. You guys are my lifeline... I appreciate all of your for your individuality, your unique viewpoints, and the true beauty that shines from each of you, regardless of size, or shape. I love seeing your skills, your pictures, a little slice of your lives.
Thank you for sharing the jouney - and the Love.

We had tile floors in our home in Florida for 11 years. Honestly, I dry Swiffer and wet Swiffer on a regular basis. For deep down periodic cleaning I get on my hands and knees (oy vey) and scrub the grout with a soft toothbrush and sponge scrub the tile. I do not like tile!!!!

Heather you have put into words what I have felt to be true of myself in the last several years. I made a commitment to put myself first and I have slowly but surely found contentment and happiness for the first time in too long. I realized in my late 40’s that I always put myself after everyone else. As a child in a family of 7, as a young adult making decisions that I should not have made, to my husband who was overbearing in our marriage and of course as a mother to our 2 children. Something snapped when we moved to Ohio so my husband could find employment. It was a move I did not want. I became physically ill for several months. It was at that point that I started to reconsider my decisions and start Project Cheri. It is a work in progress but I am sure to tell my husband that I am happy and blossoming and I love my life right now!
Lanette

Thank you Lanette. Here are the links for the pattern: http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/summer-garden-granny-square.html and to join http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/joining-asyougo-sqaures.html. This afghan was part of a yearlong project monitoring the daily hi and lo temperatures. The center of the square was the low of the day and the first colored round is the high of the day. Then I used Heather Grey to pull it all together.
Cherie ~ Please bring your energy to my house! Peach1949
I would love to however I must retain these energetic spurts for my needs. That’s me being “selfish” ha, ha! Honestly, I do not know where this energy comes from because I really do not like housework at all and would much rather be in my studio creating! I harness it when I can.
Cheri, what is this organization you make the afghans for? They are lovely. Many years ago a dear friend made both my girls one ofr Christmas. Neither liked them and I enjoy them. One has some tears in the crochet and I carefully fold it so the tears don't show and no my cat loves it. Joyce, Indiana
The organization is Project Linus. http://www.projectlinus.org/ It is a non-profit organization providing homemade blankets to children in need. Typically donated to hospitals. We have a monthly meeting where we share our creations and then the coordinator takes them off to area hospitals.

No basements ... I have also heard that places with higher water tables do not have basements. Here in the northeast we have clay soil, but full basements. French drains around the perimeter move a lot of water!2
