Does cardio eat away muscle? Is it diet? Is it cardio? Is it GENES?

And I am continuing to lose weight when I stay between 1500 and 2000 calories!
Then your genetics are totally different than Mine, we don't digest food and absorb nutrients the same way, if I stepped it up to 2000 kcal daily I will look like a marshmallow, soft and that's uncomfortable for me. My metabolism is really slow trust me.
Also there is a thing called adaptive thermogenisis. Look it up and maybe you'll understand.

Oooo wow very interesting for an ACE certified trainer comparing and average Joe training and nutrition to a Olympic athelete.....

Plenty. They make it fit their macros.
I'm sorry but if you are trying to get a ripped shredded look you won't be able to do that by fitting in a 400-600 calorie slice of pizza
Currently doing it. Couple of weeks ago I ate a whole pizza to myself. Followed by dessert. Tonight was hamburger and chips. With dessert.
Prepped in to bodybuilding shows using IIFYM, including "treats" in my diet. I'm definitely not special, or unusual.
When I see it I'll believe it[/quote]
I see it and i do believe it, with my son. He's 6" around 176lbs and the amount of food he puts away makes me all warm and fuzzy. There is not an ounce of pinchable fat on that boy, he is a solid wall of muscle. He eats a lot because he trains a lot, he needs that fuel (food) to sustain his training and physique.
I'm 5'8, female age 45 and wont go below 1600 calories to lose weight.4 -

Umm LOTS. Like, most of them.
To answer your original question, to me it seems quite obvious that you are eating too little. Why are you eating so little???
It's March right now, coming into spring I will be cutting my cal to 1200-1000kcal daily I eat little because I weight 153lbs at 5'9 32yrsold belive me I ate 2500 -3000kcal daily exercising in my younger years I looked like a water buffalo. I eat clean foods no more powdered supps none of that crap
Just for a comparison. I am 4'11, weight 105 pounds and am a female. My TDEE for an inactive lifestyle is around 1400. You are male and considerably larger. There is no way you should be eating that little a day.4 -

So what are you trying to achieve OP? Based on several questions that you have asked, there have been a lot of good advice pointing you in the right direction, which you do not seem to be willing to take. At this point, I'd almost suggest that you try to understand what your actual goals are, and listen to the advice of those who are more successful and have a greater understanding of this than you. But starving yourself is going to increase adaptive thermogenesis and lead to muscle loss, which is why you look like a crack head. So from what I can gather, your diet and your exercise program is highly ineffective and not supporting your goals, which is why you are in this predicament.13

I think he's pretty special. Working in a fitness center I'm in close proximity with a few trainers who, frankly, are turds. This random guy on the internet is the one I'm most inclined to take advice from.5 -

I would be hangry and would start a binge(I dont have an eating disorder, never have) if I ate only 1000 calories. hell I eat more than that when Im sick. 1000 calories is way to low for a male. you need to see a specialist because OP you have disordered thinking when it comes to calories. I dont even see how you have any energy to even workout eating so little. if your BMR is actually that low,its because you eating so little calories caused it to be that low.I have a metabolic disorder and eat more than you as still lose weight, although its slower.
oh and as for genetics both my parents were average weight(not overweight),and I was normal weight all my life. I used to be able to eat whatever I wanted. its when I became less active and eating more that I became overweight/obese.
I was thin almost all my life up until then. I was told genetics would determine if you are going to be fat or not,by teachers, peers, etc.
well that was a lie, because I did get fat(I was never taught you had to watch your calories and be active).., in fact all my sisters gained weight,we were all thin as kids and young adults.mom was never overweight(even before she became an alcoholic) and we were taught healthy eating habits as children.
so no I dont believe genetics play a part if you are going to be obese or not unless its a health issue causing it,but then again you can still lose weight even with health issue.5 -

Not for the reasons you think, though.1 -
No kidding. My 82 yr old 5' 2" uncle who probably weighs somewhere around 145 lbs eats more, though admittedly he's less into pizza and more into Hungry Man frozen dinners, all-you-can-eat Chinese buffets and cheeseburgers. Oh, and Mrs. Smith's frozen pumpkin pies.
Now, he's still decently muscular and very active for a guy his age. Very wiry, gets his resistance training lifting car parts as a hobbyist mechanic and does 45min of NordicTrak skiing at the highest resistance every day. But still.
OP, you really need to rethink your diet.13 -

BS.
Many "ripped" individuals will eat foods like pizza, especially on a bulk and even on a cut. It's all about calories.3 -

Yes, you can. I know competitive bodybuilders who eat this way.1 -

You've had it tested in a lab, then?
My metabolism was slow too, when I purged by exercise. Dude, eat more. I had to let myself get overweight before I got healthy enough to lose to a normal weight. I am 48, 5'7" and 160 ish pounds depending on the day. You look underweight because you are.1 -
This is the best thread on the board!
I know right!!
OP is asking why his muscles are eaten away each summer to the point of looking like a drug addict. His possible suggested answers...
a) Cardio
b) Diet
c) Genes
Everyone answers b) Diet, not eating enough food to maintain muscle mass. He flips out and argues for several pages.
But, you have to admit, a 1,000-1,200 calories per day diet while working out is not an easy feat. That takes a ton of willpower.5 -

Well - except the workouts probably suck big time to what they could be if fueling for them properly and for good recovery.
So they probably really aren't that good and burning a lot.
The body has ways to adapt.6 -

Id look to re-evaluate a few things in your training and nutrition. Possibly swapping out fats or carbs for a few more grams of protein. Depending on what your aim in the gym is your caloric intake can be as much as over 3000 calories.
In terms of the cardio, i believe a steady pace run (jog) for example doesn't help with muscle growth. You either need to look at high intensity interval training or slow stair master (examples)
Also, patience is a massive thing here. Please dont forget that.1
