Why so much despise for bodybuilders
Replies
-
I have a number of body builder friends, so I go on record saying I do not despise bodybuilders as a whole.
That said, I have seen /experienced a lot of aggression and rudeness coming from those who are heavily involved in the sport.
Case in point... On this two page thread, a number of varying body types replied, and it was the self-professed bodybuilders who were calling names (cardio monkey) and judging body types (fat, skinny, noshape, beanpoles, etc)
Though... Once the name calling started, many jumped in.
That aggressive attitude and disrespectful behavior is what bodybuilders are stereotyped with... And that's what a lot of people don't like. So... Maybe trying not to feed that stereotype would help you avoid any exposure to "despisal"

I'm trying to think how many bodybuilders I was aware of or saw either in real life or on the TV as a kid. My perception may be skewed as I spent 5 days a week gymnastics training so wasn't really watching much telly. Apart from Gladiators which was essential viewing. And I think those were the only ones I actually knew but they were actually mostly former athletes.
I don't think I saw any in real life in the weights room we'd sometimes do some conditioning in (gym training was in a local sports centre, well, two sports centres).
Oh and of course doormen/bouncers were quite often pretty built. So I do think the number of builders is more prevalent now but I would think that would make them less noticeable or head turning, as it's more normal to see?0 -

The big gym I used to go to had tons of body builders and the staff kept complaining about needles in the bathroom and locker rooms so I'm guessing most body builders use HGH or steroids...
I personally believe that if you have to use steroids to win competitions then you don't deserve the win and you're belittling and showing disrespect to the hard working people who play by the rules and do it naturally. Also, if you need the steroids, you're not being healthy or into fitness.. you're doing drugs and are no different then drug addicts.
Im natural, and will always be. I'd rather compete in an untested fed against those who are open about what they do, rather than a natural fed with cheaters. People who use still have to work damn hard for their physiques.1 -

I wouldn't call anything about the physiques of today's top bodybuilders "normal".
p.s. here's what i mean in my original comment. I don't think anyone would be shocked or head turning seeing the first guy. tell me what you think about the second.

I should have said normalised, which is what I meant, more than what the average Joe can achieve naturally.0 -

I called no one a name, nor have I judged physiques.
Nor did I accuse you of doing so. I didn't state that every BB name called, but the OP and another fellow BBer did.
I have significant respect for people who devote the time to their craft and working on their bodies. I enjoy doing the same. Where the stereotypes for BBers come into play relate to areas of aggression and tendencies to narcissism. If those are supported by some, then it degrades the entire sport.
It's like saying all pitbulls are bad because some have attacked. It's not truth, but the more attacks there are, the more it starts sounding truthful.1 -

@IVMay - its quite amusing how you spout off about bodybuilders traps and delts and their lack of this and that - judging by the look of you, you are a crossfitter or cardio monkey, thats fine, being muscular is not everyones fitness goal, some just life to stay lean and fit and healthy, thats absolutely fine, everyone is different, but i dont think you show any class or earn any right to criticise people that do spend their life dedicated to building a better body.

I agree - although know a lot of people (mainly my female friends) who aren't a fan of bodybuilders or that look, as they feel it goes outside the realms of 'normality' (each to their own view) or that it's extreme vanity.
My personal opinion is I don't really care what someone chooses to do as long as they don't start bashing other people or assuming that their way is 'the only way'. Unfortunately fitness is becoming a bit of a strange fad at the moment and instagram is littered with memes and phrases like 'do you even lift' or jokes about your boyfriend really being a girl because he 'needs' a pad to squat and various other put down things about how size matters (and for once, it's not on about down below... unless you mean LEGS) or how if you don't lift over a certain amount, it does count. This isn't to say all bodybuilders do this...hell, some of the people who post these type of pics aren't bodybuilders per se, but caught up in the culture of being big/hench/wedge/in "Beast mode" and it seems they have to put everyone down in the process. Unfortunately, like idiots who abuse pit bulls or bull type breeds, stigma grows and people remember the negative, not the positive (e.g say the word skinhead, many think neo nazi, although it originated in the UK with working class white youths adopting a love of black culture and listening to reggae and ska). Many I know attach muscular size with arrogance, vanity, aggression, in your face machismo, steroid abuse, bully type behaviour and a pack animal mentality. Perhaps it's about recognising that stereotypes exist...it happens! There are many out there. Doesn't mean everyone believes in them but if it does affect you, there is also taking the route of breaking down the stereotype by simply educating others (sometimes if people don't know, they assume) or NOT being an example of what people stigmatise you/a group you belong too as.

I'll just leave this here:
Nothing wrong with bodybuilding although some people do take it a little too far. But hey that's up to them. The only ones I lack respect for are those 'carpet carriers' who walk around as if their latissimus dorsai need their own postcode; when their 'v-taper' (or lack thereof) is not in proportion to biceps and pectorials which seems to be a monday-sunday type exercise.
One other thing with 'bodybuilders' is lack of rear deltoid development. So I think there's a perception that the whole narcissistic focus on 'guns n chest' takes priority over achieving an actual proportioned look which gives an illusion of size. To me a lot of so called 'bodybuilders' are just juiceheads without any knowledge what the hell they're doing. I have the utmost respect for those who treat it like a science and art project to actually 'sculpt' their body to the fullest and leanest extent but some of these people are just.... plain - strange.
Respect for those who do it for self improvement and development to help their lives.

I think the poster who specifically mentioned tren was using it in a light hearted, joking manner. Something tells me that going into a discussion about specifics of names.... Not to mention the probability they used it in an ironic way to mock the fact that the body doesn't naturally produce tren. That's what I read from that, anyway.2 -

To be fair judging by that user's responses and knowledge of certain memes - I'd say they definitely know what it is. Put it this way: they're aware. It's blatantly obvious they're a member of places like bb misc/fitmisc/getbig/uk-muscle/gen iron forums or the like. Either that or at minimum they read or are connected to people who do.
I'd hazard a guess as to them being more clued up on it than you think. The fact they're not being specific about it is probably a good thing. Self preservation is important

Yeah you're right actually - I shouldn't have put a doubt in the situation regarding the pictures - I believe it stemmed from something you posted the other day that others have done that recently and give me some credit I've not been sleeping too well due to recent events so am not 100% even down to skipping/missing comments. You are right that's not encouraging at all.
Either way - Awesome pics. Great size. Look thick. Solid. Tight. Keep us all posted on your continued progress with any new progress pics or vid clips. Show us what you got man. Thanks for the motivation.

Why the despise for people who want to bodybuild? Shoot there is even a gym (PLANET FITNESS) that pretty much says bodybuilders are NOT welcome in their facilities. Even though there slogan is "NO JUDGMENT ZONE" is that hypocrisy?
meh. Look around you. Out of shape people is a WAY bigger pool to milk for money than bodybuilders - hence their business model to aim for those folks and make them comfortable.2 -
People don't despise bodybuilders. At least, not for the most part. People do tend to despise a-holes.
BTW - I probably shouldn't mention this, but this was on the front page of MFP. I "knew" who posted it, before opening. That might clue you in on something, if you're willing to take a step back and contemplate your own actions/words.5 -

Some small minded people, when they see you have muscle, immediately assume you do steroids, those people are the ones that dont realise it takes years if hard work in the gym and eating right, purely because they dont do it themselves.
Does his body naturally produce tren? Let's be real y'all.
Absolute gold!
Why Are you guys keep saying tren???? Y'all even know what tren does? Or are you going to Google it right now to find out. The fact that you keep saying that someone is on tren of their body produces tren leads me to believe you have no idea what you're talking about. It doesn't even leave me to believe that, I know you don't know what you're talking about LOL
I think the poster who specifically mentioned tren was using it in a light hearted, joking manner. Something tells me that going into a discussion about specifics of names.... Not to mention the probability they used it in an ironic way to mock the fact that the body doesn't naturally produce tren. That's what I read from that, anyway.
^ exactly my point.
How would you know the body doesn't naturally produce it if you don't even know what it is. You make zero sense. But y'all can go Google it and find out so you can have a quick and intelligent response to this.
Anyhoo relax nobody has got it in for you - most people on here have been supportive. Myself included. I think you can do whatever you want - don't think people think less of you or whatever. If that's you in the pics you have made good progress and are achieving your goals for yourself and not going out hurting people so chill
Supportive??? LOL. Have you been reading the posts LOL and the replies LOL. I simply posted a very simple question at the top of this thread. It was a simple question nothing more. Turn into a hate fast and bash on me. People constantly questioning if that's me in the pictures LOL. Everyone says how support of this community is revealed above post to my behalf LOL. I appreciate your support and your comments thanks

To be fair, they don't like power lifters there either2 -
I'm sure they don't. They like people or just want to use the cardio machines it seems. Just because you have a passion for powerlifting doesn't mean you shouldn't be welcomed at a gym LOL as long as your abiding by there Rules I don't see the problem0 -
Can somebody explain the anti-cardio memes? I'm old enough to be someone's mom, so I need a well-rounded program that includes weights, cardio and lots of stretches and flexibility training - but I keep seeing a lot of memes about how lifting is the only thing that matters, blah blah blah.4
